Ones of the things I liked about Shallow Grave was that its main
focus was on the characters' interaction with one another,
rather than simply being about the mystery of the dead body. In
the first five minutes we are introduced to Alex, Juliet, and
David and discover that they are three equally intelligent,
successful, and cruel young people. They are perfect to live
with one another, and have a hard time finding a fourth flatmate
with as callous a personality as theirs. It's interesting to
see the idiosyncracies of the three flatmates' daily lives, such
as the phone calls that Juliet receives constantly from a
pathetic admirer. Juliet never answers the phone, and Alex and
David know to tell the caller that Juliet is never home. When
Juliet is interviewing a prospective roommate, she has him
answer the phone for her to tell the caller that she is not
home. She then gauges his response as a sort of test to see
whether or not the guy could be let into their 'secret club'.
The three flatmates spend a lot of time together, most of which
is spent throwing insults and outwitting each other. At this
point you know that when the suitcase full of money comes
around, it won't be a question of WILL they betray one another,
but HOW. It all builds up perfectly to an appropriately fun
