ListicleHeadlined by stars like Rajinikanth, Ram Charan, Mammootty, and Fahadh Faasil, these films challenge how Dalit and Adivasi lives have so far been represented in cinema from the southern states.Cinema from the southern states have seen a wave of anti-caste films that challenge how caste is represented on our screens. Kollywood in particular has seen many such movies in recent years, with several helmed by Dalit directors such as Pa Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj among others. The success of these films in both box office takings and wide-spread popularity among audiences and critics alike have certainly created a trend of anti-caste movies. These films have banked on some of the biggest stars in their respective industries like Rajinikanth, Ram Charan, Mammootty, and Fahadh Faasil to draw in movie-goers, while simultaneously challenging how Dalit and Adivasi lives have been represented so far. Here’s a list of films in Telugu,...

ReviewThough Raavana Kottam has an interesting plotline and fitting background score that maintains tension, there is little to redeem the no-nuance script. The film falls into a trap of cliches while trying hard to give a hot take on caste discrimination. YouTube ScreengrabIn one of the opening shots of Raavana Kottam, you see Bose (played by Prabhu) at the door of his house with nine other faux heads. The heads are actually photos hung in Bose’s house and belong to various leaders like Dr Br Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar, late Ltte chief Prabhakaran, Periyar, and Subhash Chandra Bose, among others. This clever camera trick featuring an ideologically varied medley of leaders sets the tone for the confusing politics employed in the film. Written and directed by Vikram Sugumaran, Raavana Kottam features Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Anandhi, and Prabhu in lead roles. The movie is set in the ‘caste-free’ utopian village of Enathi in the Ramnad district.

ReviewAV Mohan’s film has an oversimplistic plot with unidimensional characters. But the performances and the music by Sricharan Palaka hold the film together.Balakrishna GaneshanIt is a reality that even after 75 years of Independence, many tribal hamlets on the fringes of forests do not have access to basic needs like health, infrastructure, and education. They are an excluded – or intentionally unheard – group in our society whose problems sadly do not feature in the mainstream conversation. They appear in the news only when some shocking clip of a pregnant woman being carried to a faroff hospital on a makeshift stretcher due to lack of proper roads goes viral. This is the premise on which filmmaker Av Mohan has written and directed Itlu Maredumilli Prajaneekam. The film stars Naresh, Anandhi, Vennela Kishore, and others. Itlu Maredumilli Prajaneekam is inspired by the Hindi film Newton, where a self-righteous government employee is hell-bent...

The unit of director A R Mohan’s ‘Itlu Maredumilli Prajaneekam’, featuring Telugu actor Allari Naresh in the lead, has released the theatrical trailer of the film. Interestingly, the entire unit of the film, including actor Allari Naresh, chose to release the trailer at Maredumilli, a scenic village in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh.
‘Itlu Maredumulli Prajaneekam’ will be a remarkably different film in the career of Allari Naresh, who plays a government officer visiting the tribal area as an election officer.
The trailer shows a government official, along with his team reaching Maredumilli, which is in a remote place in the hills, to conduct elections there.
The entire state is awaiting the elections. Under these circumstances, the government officer gets to know the actual problems of the people over there.

Film CommentaryFor Kollywood, it’s become par for the course to mock Yogi Babu for his looks with slurs like “panni munji vaaya” (pig-face). Such pejoratives have their roots in the casteist dehumanising of dark-skinned, wiry-haired people.Bharathy SingaravelCourtesy/SonyMusicSouthVEVOMainstream Tamil cinema has in the last few years, particularly since the films of Pa Ranjith, witnessed a significant shift in how Dalit, Adivasi or Bahujan people are represented on screen. A generation of younger filmmakers, many supported by Ranjith’s Neelam Productions, have registered a strong, anti-caste, Ambedkarite stance coupled with compelling storytelling. While the industry at large seems to have recognised the ‘marketability’ of such films, it still has a long way to go in exorcising casteism from within its own ranks of scriptwriting, lyrics and characterization. Take the recently released Mahaan. The lacklustre plotline aside, Vikram’s sort-of-intro song brazenly equates a self-absorbed, irresponsible con-man, roaming the city...

But Anandhi is not interested in the suitors he tries to arrange, and when a photographer, Kavita (Anusha Prabhu), arrives to teach photography to the children as part of a vocational training programme, Anandhi befriends her – a friendship that blossoms into something more, eventually turning the lives of Anandhi and Singaram upside down.

Until quite recently, the subjects related to the queer identity hadn’t been a part of Indian Cinema. Even if some efforts were being taken in the form of the films like “Fire” (1996) or the anthology films like “I Am” (2010) or “Bombay Talkies” (2013), they either faced severe controversies or catered only a core art-house film-enthusiast. With the change in the country’s legal affairs related to same-gender couples, there’s a rise in such topics and their voices are being heard. Swarnavel Eswaran’s “Kattumaram” falls in the same vein. It talks about the same-sex relationship in the context of Indian traditions. Moreover, it speaks on how that affects the people from a lower part of the social paradigm.

KollywoodThe 2018 film directed by Mari Selvaraj has been winning one accolade after another.Tnm StaffDirector Mari Selvaraj's critically acclaimed film Pariyerum Perumal has picked up more accolades, this time in France. The 2018 film, produced by Kaala director Pa Ranjith, has won the Independent Film Critic Award, Jury Award and Audience Award at the Toulouse Indian Film Fest. Pariyerum Perumal, starring Kathir and Anandhi in the lead, was about how Pariyan, a young man from the Dalit community, faces relentless discrimination from the people around him, including at the law college where he studies. When he falls in love with a classmate from the upper caste, he is humiliated and assaulted for it. The young man's dog, Karuppi, becomes a metaphor for how caste operates in society. While the film received rave reviews, it was also criticised by a section of the Dalit community for depicting their plight without providing an adequate fight back.

CinemaThis year saw impressive debut films, experimental cinema that broke the rules, and quite a few films with women in the lead.Sowmya RajendranThe Tamil film industry in 2018 had quite a few films that made us sit up and take notice. There were impressive debut films, experimental cinema that broke the rules set by the mainstream, films that subverted the usual stereotypes, and ones that took on politicians in the state and the Centre. And then, of course, there were films that tried out new things but didn't quite pull it off. It has also been a year when the audience embraced good storylines and performances, proving yet again that the mere presence of a star cannot rescue a lazy film at the box-office. Movie Review Director Balaji Mohan burdens our once 'evil' protagonist with unending attachments and emotions, giving him no space to actually be himself.Priyanka ThirumurthyIn 2015, when Maari first hit screens, Balaji Mohan brought to life a character encompassing several shades of grey. An actor like Dhanush, typically seen in the hero mould, was refreshing to watch as a thug who took extreme joy in torturing and extorting money from innocents, and scorning any form of attachment. Even the masses in the film hated him with passion. Maari's antics were thoroughly entertaining and it was this detached anti-hero that made a mark in what was otherwise an average movie. In the sequel, however, the director burdens our once unfeeling protagonist with unending attachments and emotions, giving him no space to actually be himself. Maari 2 picks up after the death of Velu, the gangster whom Maari was associated with in the...
