Covid seems to be making a return engagement on Broadway, even if in a limited capacity compared to the post-shutdown era of 2021 and 2022. Both Josh Groban and, now, Annaleigh Ashford, the two lead performers in the massive hit Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, have tested positive for Covid and missed performances.
Groban missed performances last weekend and early this week after posting an Instagram video explaining that he began to feel ill during last Wednesday’s show and by Thursday was testing positive for Covid. He missed the weekend performances and will remain out tonight.(In Groban’s absence, Sweeney is being played by understudy Nicholas Christopher, described by Groban as “absolutely extraordinary in the role.”)
Then just yesterday, Ashford, who plays Mrs. Lovett, the duplicitous pie-baking partner in crime to Groban’s murderous barber Sweeney Todd, posted an Instagram message saying she too had come down with the illness.

Drew Barrymore criticised the Razzies for nominating 12-year-old Firestarter actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the Worst Actress category.
The parody awards group, which famously recognises films and performances they feel are the worst of the year, issued a public apology to Armstrong and confirmed her removal from the “final ballot” after her nomination drew intense backlash.
Barrymore was a child actor herself and even starred in the 1984 iteration of Firestarter when she was nine years old.
“I don’t like it,” Barrymore said of the nomination on CBS’s Talk of the Table on Thursday (26 January).
“Because she is younger and it is bullying,” she told host Gayle King. “I’m glad to see people didn’t jump on the ‘let’s make fun of her’ wave and instead said, ‘This isn’t right.’”
Barrymore spoke further about the controversy on her eponymous talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show.

The Razzies have taken an additional step in bettering their parody awards show after they received backlash for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The group famous for recognising films and performances they feel are the worst of the year – formally known as The Golden Raspberry Awards – were met with serious criticism for including the Firestarter star in the Worst Actress category.
In a recent statement (via Variety), Razzies founder John Wilson issued a public apology to Armstrong, confirming her removal from the “final ballot”.
He additionally noted: “Having learned from this lesson, we would also like to announce that, from this point forward, we are adopting a Voting Guideline precluding any performer or film-maker under 18 years of age from being considered for our awards.
“We have never intended to bury anyone’s career. It is why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, very much us included,” Wilson said.

In "The Crown" season five, released on Netflix on Nov. 9, Elizabeth Debicki takes on the role of Princess Diana. She's the fourth person to portray "The People's Princess" in recent years, after Kristen Stewart in 2021's "Spencer," Jeanna de Waal in Broadway's "Diana" musical, and Emma Corrin in the fourth season of "The Crown," released in 2020. Debicki's turn as Diana comes months after the 25th anniversary of the princess's death.
Debicki worked hard to master Diana's mannerisms and voice. The show's costume department re-created some of her most iconic looks for season five and even remixed clothes she was photographed in, also imagining outfits she might have worn during private moments.
The first episode of the season starts in 1991, with Diana, Prince Charles (Dominic West), Prince William (Senan West), and Prince Harry (Will Powell) going on a vacation in Italy, marketed to the press as a "second honeymoon." But Diana and Charles don't get along,...

The year’s achievements in film will have to wait one more day for the Academy Awards, but the medium’s lows were dishonored on Saturday morning at the 42nd Golden Raspberry awards.
Netflix’s “Diana the Musical,” a filmed performance of the much-derided new Broadway musical based on the life of Princess Diana, had a clean sweep across all of its four nominations, winning in the categories of worst picture, worst director for Christopher Ashley, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal and worst supporting actress for Judy Kaye.
Warner Bros.’ “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was the runner-up, earning three wins in worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel; worst screen combo; and worst actor for LeBron James. Jared Leto, once in the awards season conversation for his performance in “House of Gucci,” took home the worst supporting actor prize for his performance in the Ridley Scott-directed crime epic.

Diana the Musical, the much-mocked telling of the life story of Diana, Princess of Wales, has swept the board at this year’s Razzie Awards.
Complete winners list below.
The stage show, of which a filmed version was shown on Netflix, won five awards at this year’s Golden Raspberries, including worst picture, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal in the title role, worst director, worst supporting actress and worst screenplay. It had been nominated in nine categories altogether.
Netlix streamed a filmed version of the stage show before it debuted on Broadway, without a live audience due to theaters being closed at a time of coronavirus restrictions. When the theatrical show eventually opened, it lasted for only 33 performances on Broadway before the curtain fell for the final time.

Results for the 42nd Razzie Awards are in — and if you had anything to do with “Diana: The Musical,” you might want to go back to bed.
The big, fat Broadway bomb about the Princess of Wales beamed into your living room courtesy of Netflix was this year’s big Razzie “winner,” taking home five of what the group calls its “un-coveted … tacky, gold-spray-painted statuettes.”
The streaming version of the stage musical bagged Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Jeanna de Waal), Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director (Christopher Ashley) and Worst Screenplay. The group pointed out how richly the “Diana” script deserved the honor for “featuring some of the year’s most ridiculed dialogue and lyrics — Including rhyming ‘Camilla’ with both ‘Manila’ and ‘Godzilla.'”

The Razzie Awards nominations recognizing the worst “crap streaming, beaming and steaming from our various screens and devices” of 2021 — as the group put it — have been announced, with LeBron James, “Diana: The Musical,” Amy Adams and Bruce Willis topping the heap.

With Oscar nominations coming out on Tuesday morning, the Academy Award’s snarky counterpart, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies) followed suit as they do every year at this time acknowledging the superior work – or, actually, the inferior work – coming out of the entertainment industry.

The sextet of queens of Six and each of the three Lehman Brothers – or rather the performers in the Broadway roles – may compete in the Tony Awards’ lead acting categories this year, Tony administrators announced today.
The decision to consider the individual members of those ensemble casts was among the first set of eligibility rulings made for the 2021-2022 season. The Tony Awards Administration Committee met yesterday in the first of the several eligibility meetings the group will have before the end of the season next spring.
This round of decisions mostly addresses acting category decisions, determining whether various cast members of often large ensembles fall into the lead slots.
A decision was also made on Trouble in Mind, the Alice Childress play originally staged Off Broadway in 1955 that had never been produced on Broadway until this season. As it did several seasons ago with Mart Crowley’s 1968 play The Boys in the Band,...

Diana, Princess of Wales has been portrayed in no shortage of high profile works of fiction this past year, from her introduction on the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” to Pablo Larraín’s new film “Spencer,” and now a new Broadway musical. Diana, The Musical begins its Act II with the shirtless, well-toned actor portraying the princess’ studly consort James Hewitt doing his best Urban Cowboy riding-the-bull impression, much to the dirty-dancing delight of the smitten royal.
Finally, you think, Diana has fully embraced itself, director Christopher Ashley has rediscovered the campy aesthetic that served him so well from Jeffrey to The Rocky Horror Show and hope may not be entirely lost. But then the pink-bedecked romance novelist Barbara Cartland (don’t ask) stops the action to announce that she just made up that steamy bit, and the ripped stable boy covers up his abs and Diana sinks back to its high-decibel mediocrity.
By now you’ve probably read, heard or seen for yourself, via Netflix, just how deliciously bad Diana is, but the truth isn’t quite so much fun. Diana, opening tonight on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre, is not a so-bad-it’s-good disaster.

‘Caroline, or Change’ reviews: ‘Thrilling’ revival showcases Sharon D Clarke’s ‘titanic’ performance
Seventeen years after its Broadway debut, musical “Caroline, or Change” has returned in what critics describe as an “electrifying” production. The show is set in 1960s Louisiana and centers on its title character Caroline Thibodeaux (Sharon D Clarke), who works for a Jewish family and cares for their son Noah, who inadvertently changes the course of her life with pocket change. This Roundabout Theatre Company production opened at Studio 54 on Oct. 27.
The musical boasts a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (“Angels in America”) and music by Tony-winner Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”). The original production starred Tony-winner Tonya Pinkins (“Jelly’s Last Jam”) in the title role and featured direction by Tony-winner George C. Wolfe. This revival is directed by Michael Longhurst, who previously directed the play “Constellations” on Broadway.

Nearly a quarter-century ago, Princess Diana died trying to out-race a swarm of paparazzi. Though many blamed the media for that tragedy, the tabloidification of her life story continues to this day, this time with that most bloated form of homage: the Broadway musical.
Filmed in an empty theater last fall but bursting with the kind of broad, feel-good energy that typically packs the house with tourists in non-covid times, “Diana: The Musical” brings “the people’s princess” directly to the people, in their homes, all but canonizing Diana as a feminist icon and saint in the process. With music by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics co-written by Bryan and book writer Joe Dipietro (the duo behind 2010 Tony winner “Memphis”), the project rides a fresh wave of Diana-mania: a kitsch stage tribute to balance the more critical/cynical takes still popping like so many flashbulbs around the late icon.

Of course, the Princess Diana storyline on Season 4 of The Crown largely was responsible for the roaring success of 11 Emmy wins a couple of weeks ago, and Pablo Larrain’s new and surreal take on Diana’s royal woes took Venice by storm and immediately started Oscar buzz for star Kristen Stewart in Spencer. Broadway performances all over the New York theater district are starting back up again after a year and a half of Covid-19 pandemic closures. There are currently six musical productions set to open this fall. Could we see any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Let’s take a look at the plot of each musical as well as some of the awards history of their creators, actors, and creative teams, plus the opening and closing dates (where applicable).
SEETony Awards history: Black winners from pioneer Juanita Hall to record-breaker Audra McDonald
“Six” (previews begin September 17; opens October 3)
This original musical by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss tells the stories of the six wives of King Henry VIII presented as a pop concert. Each ex-wife gets to sing and tell her story to determine who suffered the most from marrying Henry and should therefore become the group’s lead singer.

We’ve spent the last few months reporting on the many headaches that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused the film and TV industry. But while having almost every big blockbuster delayed is a huge setback, it pales in comparison to the nightmare Broadway is going through. Live shows with packed audiences simply aren’t going to happen for the foreseeable future and that (in combination with the already pretty thin profit margins) is causing a lot of misery in the industry.
All of that’s why the much-hyped Diana: A New Musical, which was due to open on Broadway days after the Covid-19 shutdowns began, is going to make its debut on Netflix rather than on the stage. According to a report from Decider, the show will now open on Broadway on May 25th, 2021, but will be shown on Netflix before then.
