"American Sniper," a dramatized look at the life of the late Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle (whose real-life actions have been called into question), was a huge hit. In fact, it's the biggest hit of Clint Eastwood's directing career, hauling in $547 million worldwide, a feat that made it the 13th highest-grossing film of 2014, and the highest-grossing wide-release film that opened in the month of January. it also received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
And now, it's coming to 4K for the first time.
Bradley Cooper stars as Kyle, and the film follows him throughout his life and military career as he becomes a deadly sniper and then struggles to maintain any semblance of a normal life at home. For some, this is a controversial film due to the actions surrounding the real Kyle, who was killed shortly before the movie opened. Some would even say the film is...

Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for its tenth birthday: more on the release here.
It’s been nearly ten years since the release of Clint Eastwood’s biggest film at the US box office, the Bradley Cooper-headlined American Sniper. Based on the true story of Chris Kyle, played by Cooper in the film, the movie grossed a staggering $350m at the American box office, and earned Oscar nominations too, including one for Best Picture.
That particular year in fact, the entirely neutral folks at Fox News ran the headline when Birdman took home Best Picture at the Oscars something along the lines that ‘American Sniper loses Best Picture’.
Wherever you stand on the film, and it’s got a lot of qualities, it’s also the movie where Clint Eastwood got fed up waiting for a realistic baby, and just used a doll instead.

Hollywood heartthrob Bradley Cooper is currently dating Gigi Hadid. Despite being linked to many women, 2011’s People magazine‘s Sexiest Man Alive insists he’s far from being a ladies’ man. The actor first got married to actress Jennifer Esposito in 2006. But their romance didn’t last long and they divorced four months later.
Cooper then went on to date Renée Zellweger, his co-star Zoe Saldaña, model-actress Suki Waterhouse, and Russian supermodel Irina Shayk, with whom he has a daughter named Lea de Seine.
Since parting ways with Shayk in 2019, the Maestro star has reportedly been seeing Huma Abedin. While Cooper has been often linked to high-profile celebrities, he’s especially grateful for the daughter he shares with one of his previous partners.

Eagle Pass, Texas — The video is 13 seconds long. In the foreground is an orderly green lawn, lit and safe. In the background, there are the lights of Mexico, Coahuila state. In the middle is the river. It’s a void, darker than the night sky.
Amid crickets, a woman’s voice echoes from the void, or maybe a child’s. Then a man’s. They’re crying out for help.
The lawn belongs to former state Rep. Poncho Nevárez (D), who represented Eagle Pass in the Texas Legislature for eight years.

Amid tributes from Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival itself, “Maestro” director, co-writer, and star Bradley Cooper fit in his own send-ups to a few famous names he’s gotten to work with.
On Thursday evening, the multi-hyphenate was on hand to accept the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the current Oscar nominee reflected on his career in conversation with Deadline’s Pete Hammond, including the period in which he was a student asking questions at tapings of “Inside the Actors Studio,” hosted by James Lipton.
Recalling when he got to query his future “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Robert De Niro about whether an acting choice he made in the 1990 film “Awakenings” was inspired by someone he knew, or was organic, Cooper said, “I thought maybe he would laugh. You think all these weird things, that he was going to laugh at you.

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Like many of Taylor Sheridan’s shows, the cast of his flagship creation Yellowstone is a major part of its draw. The cast is an intriguing mix of absolute icons, seasoned veterans, character actors, international artists and, at the time, up-and-comers. While their notoriety has certainly evolved to the point where they are inseparable from Yellowstone, this amazing group of performers has an equally amazing body of work behind them.
While these may not be the roles the cast are known for, or even remembered for, there are several stops along the way to the fictional Montana that are worth mentioning. With Yellowstone currently on hiatus, now is the perfect time to revisit these films and shows, and see how well rounded the cast truly is.

"When I die, God is going to hold me accountable for everything I've done on earth. He may hold me back until last and run everybody else through the line, because it will take so long to go over all my sins." Those are the words of Chris Kyle, the man who holds the distinction of being the most lethal sniper in the history of the U.S. Military. Kyle penned a book about his four tours in Iraq titled "American Sniper," and it would go on to inspire a movie that shattered decades-long beliefs about what a movie could do at the box office in January. Bradley Cooper teamed up with Clint Eastwood for the autobiographical drama American Sniper. And although Cooper enjoyed his time on set with the veteran, there was one sequence he couldn’t believe he had to do.
Bradley Cooper had to hold a fake baby for Clint Eastwood’s ‘American Sniper’ Bradley Cooper | Larry French/Getty Images
Cooper and Eastwood were both praised for their efforts in the movie American Sniper. The pair even got near Oscar glory thanks to the film. Eastwood was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Meanwhile, Cooper was nominated for Best Oscar. But the highly praised feature also faced a couple of criticisms. In particular, the film was targeted for a laughable scene that showed Cooper cradling a baby he had to pretend was his child.
But Cooper didn’t mind the criticisms. Even he couldn’t get over the bizarre sequence, believing it was nuts.

The Writers Guild of America East is offering an explanation for why it hasn’t made a statement about Hamas’ attack on Israel, while also emphasizing that it stands against antisemitism and Islamophobia, amid criticism of the WGA’s silence.
In a message sent to members on Monday, union officers noted that a recent restructuring of the guild had led to a change in policy on public statements. The organization pointed out this referendum was spurred by the fact that journalists now make up 40 percent of its membership.

Cullen, who is running unopposed in the guild’s upcoming elections, will be its third female president and the first person of color to hold the post, starting next month. She currently serves as VP of the guild’s Film/TV/Streaming sector.

Ryan Murphy, in a letter from his attorney to the leadership of the Writers Guild of America, threatened litigation against Warren Leight, an East Coast strike captain and Strike Rules Compliance Committee member who has subsequently forfeited those positions.
The flap started June 21, when Leight, a former Law & Order: Svu showrunner and playwright, alleged in a tweet that crewmembers on Murphy’s American Horror Story had told him that “they’ll be blackballed in Murphy-land” if they don’t cross the Writers Guild’s picket lines. At the time, a spokesperson for Murphy called Leight’s tweet “absolute nonsense” and “categorically false.”
After Murphy’s attorney Craig Emanuel sent the letter to the WGA, union leadership met with Leight, who deleted the tweet and issued an apology and retraction in which he called his initial tweet “unsubstantiated” and “completely false and inaccurate.” Reps for Murphy declined further comment on...

Hollywood action films set in the Middle East cover a considerable portion of the present action genre. America’s thirst for glory has no bounds, and the way it uses such movies as a tool of hegemony is rather lucid if one is looking for it. Some of you might be wondering where I’m headed with this, but all I’m saying is that in all these movies, America becomes a beacon of hope, valor, sacrifice, and “worth” (pun intended if you remember how Captain America lifted Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Endgame). Anyway, coming back to the topic, here are five movies like Kandahar that you can watch. Although there are many, the list I’ve made is based on the first few names that came to mind that I’ve seen and liked. To make the list shorter, all these movies are based in the Middle East...

Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" chronicled the military career of eagle-eyed military sharpshooter Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) who was killed along with friend, Chad Littlefield, by Eddie Ray Routh at a shooting range in 2013. Set against the backdrop of the Iraq war, the day-to-day hardships and operational life of a soldier was shown with a great attention to detail in order to tell the story with the right level of respect and authenticity. Aside from Cooper, a myriad of other actors are featured in smaller roles to help show the subtle differences between the company men who, on first glance, may seem to all be on the same page in their allegiance to the flag. Performers like the underrated Kyle Gallner, Keir O'Donnell, and a very young Luke Grimes, star of "Yellowstone," all give effective performances that helped Eastwood's war film find a grittier, more realistic foundation.

WGA East members have voted overwhelmingly to approve changes to the guild’s constitution that are designed to ensure a more “balanced representation” of members by bridging the divide between those who work in film, TV and broadcasting, and those employed in digital newsrooms.
The referendum, which was approved by a vote of 1,567-40 (98-2), includes the creation of three work-sector vice presidents covering members who work in Film/TV/Streaming, Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News, and Online Media.
“I’m proud of the union and the way in which our officers and council representatives have worked together, facing what often seemed to be intractable issues, yet reaching consensus,” guild president Michael Winship said Thursday. “We now stand united and determined just as we confront the big fights ahead, from next year’s Mba negotiations with the studios and networks to building and enforcing strong contracts for our new shops.”

The WGA East, whose leaders last year talked openly about spinning off their digital news members into a separate union, is now fully embracing them by proposing changes to the guild’s constitution that would ensure “balanced representation” on its governing body for members from its different work sectors.
The guild said that to ensure that all members are represented on its governing body, its Council is unanimously recommending that members approve changes to the constitution that include creating three work sector vice presidents covering members who work in Film/TV/Streaming, Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News, and Online Media.
The constitutional changes will be put to a vote of the members later this spring. In the meantime, the guild says it will be kicking off a campaign, called #NextChapter, to encourage members to approve the changes. The guild also will be holding virtual town hall discussions in April to share...

Atx Television Festival has set June 2-5 as its 2022 dates, planning to return to in-person events but still provide a virtual attendee option.
Additionally, the festival announced that submissions for its annual pitch competition are now open and will be through Jan. 30, 2022.
This will be the festival’s 11th year overall, but its first in-person one since 2019. Programming information, as well as details on how to attend, is expected to be announced in January 2022.
The pitch competition gives undiscovered writers a chance to pitch their script ideas to top decision-makers in television (both on the creative side and executives). First, applicants must submit a 90-second video pitch and a 10-page writing sample for a scripted TV show. The top candidates are narrowed down by a panel composed of network and studio executives, showrunners and other writers and producers, as well as The Black List, Sundance Episodic Labs and Inevitable Foundation,...

The story of Chris Kyle as portrayed by Bradley Cooper in American Sniper has drawn criticism as well as praise over the years since everything from the actual life of the man to the technical details of the movie have been looked over repeatedly. Quite a few people have praised Cooper for portraying Kyle in this manner but others have said that it wasn’t nearly as accurate as people appear to think. That’s kind of an odd statement unless it’s coming from someone that knew Chris and understood what he was like. Given what the man accomplished in his life

Michael Winship, running unopposed, has been elected president of the WGA East, the guild said Tuesday, but his running mates for seats on the guild’s council took a drubbing. Seven candidates on the opposition’s Solidarity slate were elected to the council, compared to only four on Winship’s Inclusion & Experience slate.
Winship, an award-winning news and documentary writer, led the guild during the tumultuous 2007-08 writers strike, serving as president for five consecutive two-year terms – starting just before the strike and ending in 2017. His running mates this time were Lisa Takeuchi Cullen, who was elected vice president, and Chris Kyle, who was elected secretary-treasurer. They too ran unopposed.
Their slate, however, came out on the losing end of what amounted to a referendum on the future of the guild. They supported a pause in the guild’s five-year-long campaign to organize digital newsrooms, arguing that so many digital...

David Simon, creator of The Wire and The Plot Against America, has weighed in on an issue that threatens to tear the WGA East apart: what to do about the guild’s rapidly growing contingent of digital news writers?
Over the past five years, the 6,400-member guild has conducted organizing drives at dozens of digital news rooms – including Salon, Slate and HuffPost and Vice – and taking in some 1,700 digital media members, with another 1,000 more in the pipeline. Guild leaders say that at the current pace, film and scripted television writers will be in the minority in a year or two.
Simon, who’s running for re-election to the guild’s Council, is part of the soon-to-be ruling party’s Inclusion & Experience slate that sees the digital media organizing campaign – which has now been put on hold – as an “existential threat” to the guild’s survival. His slate includes the WGA...

Exclusive: The WGA East is facing a digital divide that its future officers say poses “an existential threat to the guild” that could lead to it “collapsing.”
Only a few years ago, the vast majority of Wgae members were film and scripted television writers. But over the past five years, an aggressive campaign to organize dozens of digital news outlets including Salon, Slate and HuffPost has changed its demographics dramatically, with its news sectors — broadcast and digital — now approaching 50% of the guild’s total membership.
That digital news organizing campaign has now been put on hold while the guild weighs its options, which includes the possibility of spinning off its digital news members into a completely separate union.

In honor of its 80th anniversary, the United Service Organization (Uso) has named country singer and actress Kellie Pickler, and producer, actor and activist Wilmer Valderrama as Uso Global Ambassadors. Uso tour veterans Pickler and Valderrama will help lead the effort for Americans, united in spirit and action, to give more than thanks to the military community.
“We are honored to have these two longtime advocates come on board as Uso Global Ambassadors,” said J.D. Crouch II, Uso CEO and president. “Kellie and Wilmer have seen firsthand the importance of the Uso mission and the impact it can have when we express the nation’s gratitude to our Armed Forces. We hope their continued support will invite more Americans to join them in honoring service members and their families.”

A little more than halfway through “Father Soldier Son,” a documentary that follows a military family over the course of a tumultuous decade, former serviceman Brian Eisch takes his sons out for a family night at the movies. And given that this is taking place in the mid 2010s, it’s no surprise that the movie in question in “American Sniper,” Clint Eastwood’s rousing but problematic portrait of the late U.S. Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle.
That is clearly Eisch’s kind of movie – and in an odd way, it’s not hard to find similarities between “American Sniper” and “Father Soldier Son,” both of them about gung-ho soldiers not prone to introspection and not entirely cognizant of the toll their service takes on those around them.

Throughout his nearly six-decade career as an actor and director, Clint Eastwood has persistently examined the complexities of cinematic heroism. While it’s true the filmmaker’s well-known conservative political leanings have influenced many of these on-screen depictions, he’s rarely shied from confronting the violent and emotionally destructive consequences that come with mythologizing American valor.
This has especially been true during the last decade. Eastwood has released an astonishing eight feature films, many of which are based on real-life figures whose heroic achievements have been placed under varying degrees of scrutiny. American Sniper grapples with the lethal lore of Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), whose entire legend was founded on the brutal statistics of war over an extended period.
Conversely, Sully constructs a fragmented narrative to portray the life-saving, split-second actions taken by pilot Chesley Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) in the fabled Miracle on the Hudson incident. It...

Southern rock and country artist Tim Montana has released a new video for his single “American Thread.” The Butte, Montana, native returned to his hometown to film the clip, which underscores the workingman vibe of the song, a mix of Zz Top crunch and Kid Rock-like bravado.
There are scenes of horsemen, construction workers, welders and cooks, all toiling in pursuit of their version of the American dream. The video also features a cameo by extreme-sports star Travis Pastrana, a nod to another famous Butte resident, the daredevil Evel Knievel.

When audiences think about actorly transformations, their first thoughts are often of weight lost or gained, hair grown or sheared, and mannerisms shed or adopted. But even if their silhouette doesn’t quite match a level of physical deterioration commensurate with their character’s malady, or their demeanor isn’t quite befitting of, say, an 18th century courtesan, an actor’s voice can be tremendously persuasive in convincing viewers that they are believably inhabiting a specific time or place.
“It all starts with the voice,” says Bradley Cooper, whose gruff delivery as Jackson Maine in “A Star Is Born” has earned him multiple lead actor nominations from critics groups across the globe. “That’s your way in because you can hear yourself as you’re talking, and it’s the best way to believe an imaginary circumstance.”

Bradley Cooper had a shot some years ago to play the tortured country rock singer, Jack, in A Star Is Born. Clint Eastwood was then attached to direct.
But being a young actor, Cooper said, “I knew, deep down, I hadn’t lived enough and wouldn’t play that character.” But then he did – he played hardened Navy S.E.A.L. sniper Chris Kyle in Eastwood’s American Sniper. Both Eastwood and Cooper were watching Annie Lennox perform I Put a Spell on You on TV, and Cooper was blown away by how fierce her performance was, singing with her veins throbbing in her neck.
He suggested to Eastwood that they consider A Star Is Born again. He wasn’t into it, so Cooper, who already had the beginning of the film and how it would look in his head, pitched to then-Warner Bros. production boss Greg Silverman.

The art of being a movie star includes good timing. Take the American Cinematheque Tribute to Bradley Cooper on Thursday night. These events usually burnish star luster, as in the case of recent recipients Amy Adams, Matt Damon, or Matthew McConaughey. But when such a tribute unfolds at the height of an Oscar campaign, it can move the needle. “A Star Is Born” scored Best Director and Actress at the National Board of Review this week, which reflects the movie’s current status as the frontrunner for Best Picture, Actress, and Actor at awards site Gold Derby.
These events are carefully curated. Warner Bros. put this event in motion two years ago, with the fall 2018 release date of “A Star Is Born” in mind. And while Cooper self-deprecatingly mocked the huge posters and program covers all around the Beverly Hilton ballroom — in George-Clooney style — when I greeted him at his table,...

Bradley Cooper took extreme measures to become Jackson Maine for his directorial debut, “A Star Is Born,” setting up a musical bootcamp in his home for six whole months.
In an interview with W Magazine, the actor said that he had learned to play the bass as a child, but still had to learn to play the guitar and the piano for the role.
“We mapped out my entire schedule, day by day,” Cooper said. “I’d wake up and work out, followed by two hours of guitar practice and two hours of piano lessons. Lunch. Then Lukas Nelson [Willie’s son], my collaborator, would come over, and we’d write music for one and a half hours. I’d write the screenplay for the rest of the day. Irina [Shayk, Cooper’s girlfriend] was pregnant, so it was kind of perfect. Lea was born a week before we started shooting.”

While much of the shocked reaction to the Academy’s changes to the Oscars focused on the possibility of awards being presented during commercial breaks and the introduction of a Best Popular Film category, there was another big announcement that may change the complexion of the box office: an earlier Oscars airdate.
Starting in 2020, the Academy is planning to move Oscar Sunday out of its late February/early March airdate to the weekend following the Super Bowl on Feb. 9. The Oscar nominations announcement and voting periods will also be moved up into late December and early January, meaning that the period between nomination announcements and the night Best Picture is awarded will now take place in a movie theater landscape that will likely be dominated by popular holiday releases.
And that spells trouble for indie titles looking for an Oscar-buzz boost at the box office.
