As the special-effects makeup chief for “Saturday Night Live,” Louie Zakarian often has interesting demands put on his time. He once transformed Kate McKinnon into an offbeat mermaid. And he worked with Kyle Mooney to create the Baby Yoda character who made frequent appearances on “Weekend Update.”
These days, Zakarian gets even more outlandish asks, thanks to Sarah Sherman, the “SNL” cast member who might, during one week, ask him to devise a fake seagull that can be impaled in her torso while moving its legs, and, in another, order up a costume so she can dress as the oddball Six Flags mascot, but still get back to normal for a subsequent sketch 10 minutes later.
“I’ve been at the show for 29 years now,” says Zakarian. “I get some pretty crazy requests, but some of Sarah’s are really out there.”

Some innovators try to devise a gadget that changes the world. Others hope to solve a global social ill. Sarah Sherman is eager to bring fake vomit on “Saturday Night Live” into the modern age.
The comic has gained notice on the long-running NBC late-night series for bizarre humor that blends gross-out jokes with a taste for the absurd. She’s been working with colleagues for months on new technology that would make the act of pretending to throw up onstage a lot easier — and more comfortable. For years, “SNL” cast members have relied on a tube tucked alongside their arm and usually inside a jacket sleeve that spews out liquid approximating vomit or blood. At just the right moment, the actor holds an arm close to the mouth, and the “vomit rig” does the rest. Dan Aykroyd used such a get-up in 1978 when playing Julia Child, who cut her hand open,...

When you look at Adam Sandler’s filmography, you might either think outrageous comedy or some seriously impressive dramatic turns in movies like Punch Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and Hustle. But for his latest Netflix flick, he is taking a back seat on camera by basically playing the beleaguered dad to his real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler, all in fictionalized roles but nevertheless all still in the family. Sandler’s real influence in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is as a producer, and in this instance he has brought forward the right creative elements to make this adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s YA book a complete delight.
It doesn’t break any rules of the teen genre, of the kind of coming-of-age movie that the late great John Hughes pioneered so successfully in the 1980s and ’90s, but it works in a modernized way that...

The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show have both secured Emmy writing noms for the first time – noticeably helping to improve the diversity of the category.
The Peacock series and the HBO show will compete in Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series against HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s SNL.
A somewhat curious note of this category is that Ashley Nicole Black will compete against herself, having been involved in writing on both The Amber Ruffin Show and A Black Lady Sketch Show.
It marks The Amber Ruffin Show’s first Emmy nomination since the weekly show launched last year. However, it is not Ruffin herself’s first nom, having been nominated in this category for her work, alongside her head writer Jenny Hagel, on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Rapper and We Are Who We Are actor Kid Cudi, who served as musical guest, treated Saturday Night Live viewers with a musical sketch, that also featured another surprise guest.
Following Marcus Mumford’s cameo during host Carey Mulligan’s opening monologue, Timothée Chalamet crashed the latest episode of Saturday Night Live to join Kid Cudi, Pete Davidson and Chris Redd. In the musical number, the evening’s musical guest joined the cast members to boast their affinity for flutes.
The rap number saw the men poke fun at the flute elements on a number of hit trap and rap numbers including “Sure Shot” and “Mask Off.”
“That weird little flute/ I love that weird little flute,” they sing.
The crew continue to rap about how they care for their “weird little flute,” from clearing out their saliva from the various chambers, to carrying it around in a sticker-adorned case.

The cast of one of the most memorable shows in television history, HBO’s The Sopranos, reunited tonight for a special table read to benefit actor and former fireman Steve Buscemi’s favorite charity, Friends of Firefighters.
Highlighting the gathering was a cast read of a brand-new sketch cowritten by series creator David Chase and longtime writer/executive producer Terence Winter.
Titled “Bada Bing, Bada Zoom,” the sketch had cast members reuniting for an online group therapy session with Dr. Jennifer Melfi, the therapist who coaxed Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini) through many difficult moments on the series.
The entire webcast, along with the sketch, is available online here.
The 2.5-hour reunion raised more than $100,000 for Friends of Firefighters, slightly more than its goal. There will be a follow-up gathering chaired by Buscemi later this month with some different celebrity friends (see below for details) for the same charity.

“Saturday Night Live” has won the Emmy for Best Music and Lyrics three times, more than any other series. This year it could win again, and it actually has multiple chances to do so. There are five songs from the late night sketch comedy series on the ballot. Which do you think most deserves the title? Scroll down to watch all five tunes, and then vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
“SNL” has become a perennial favorite in the songwriting category. In addition to its three wins, it has nine other nominations, bringing its total to 12, which is also the most of any series in Emmy history. But it didn’t get its first nomination until 2007, when the viral “Dick in a Box” claimed the award. That launched an era of nominated comedy songs from the series, which won again in 2011 (“Justin Timberlake Monologue”) and 2018 (“Come...

Adam Sandler is putting his appreciation for health care workers during the pandemic into song.
On Thursday, the Uncut Gems actor, 53, spoke with Jimmy Fallon for an at-home edition of The Tonight Show, debuting a new tune about the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. Sandler, who created the humorous song with frequent collaborator Dan Bulla, sang while playing a guitar and social distancing at home.
For the first two verses, the comedian recalls ways doctors and nurses impacted people’s lives before the pandemic, offering lollipops and “hitting your knee with a hammer” — all while they “wear Crocs and they tell you the truth.

Sandy Wexler is the latest Netflix original film from comedian/actor Adam Sandler – part of his four picture deal with the streaming service – and tells the story of the titular character: a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s who diligently represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single-minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
If there’s one thing I can count on from my fellow movie bloggers, it’s their intense disdain for the films of Adam Sandler; in particular those made as part of Sandler’s Netflix deal.

Following up on The Ridiculous Six and wildly over-the-top actioner The Do-Over, Adam Sandler is all set to execute stage three of his four-picture deal with Netflix in the form of Sandy Wexler.
It’ll premiere on April 14th, and in order to generate some semblance of excitement, the online streamer has today rolled out the really rather bizarre first trailer. Unlike The Ridiculous Six (Western) and The Do-Over (action/comedy), Sandy Wexler doesn’t quite know which genre it belongs to. Opening with a shot of Sandler as the bumbling talent manager, the footage above ranges from hammy melodrama to oddball comedy all in the space of two minutes, with cameos from the likes of Chris Rock to Conan O’Brien thrown in for good measure. Can it find an audience in two months’ time? It’s worth remembering that The Do-Over found its way into Netflix’s top...

In 2014, Netflix signed a deal with Adam Sandler to star in and produce four films for the streaming service. The first movie in the pact was “The Ridiculous 6,” which was torn to pieces by critics, though Netflix later stated it was the most-watched movie on the platform in its first 30 days of availability. Then came “The Do-Over,” again panned by critics, and now we have the first teaser trailer for his third offering, “Sandy Wexler.”
This time around Sander stars as the titular character, a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the ‘90s who represents a group of eccentric clients in show biz. His devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), an incredible singer who he discovers at an amusement park.
The first teaser introduces audiences to Wexler crashing a movie scene and being ushered out.
