Viggo Mortensen made his directorial debut in 2020 with Falling, a drama about a fractious relationship between a father and son. He wrote the script and also starred alongside Lance Henriksen and Laura Linney.
Mortensen may be better known for intense performances in films like A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method (all made with director David Cronenberg) and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but in recent years he’s built up a career behind the camera.
He’s now set to direct his second film, a western called The Dead Don’t Hurt. The synopsis reads as follows:

The Dead Don’t Hurt: Viggo Mortensen is out for vengeance in trailer for Western he wrote & directed
Shout! Studios have released the first trailer for The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western starring Viggo Mortensen, who also wrote, directed, produced, and composed the music for the film.
As a big Western fan, I’m always eager to check out a new entry in the genre, and it looks like I’ll have to check out The Dead Don’t Hurt, as the trailer paints a dark, gritty story with some powerful performances. The film follows Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman who starts a relationship with Holgen Olsen (Mortenson), a Danish immigrant. They start a life together, but when Olsen leaves to fight in the Civil War, Vivenne is left to fend for herself.
This marks Mortenson’s second time behind the camera, as he made his feature directorial debut with Falling, a 2020 drama which followed a middle-aged gay man who moves his homophobic father (Lance Henriksen...

Viggo Mortensen loves him a good Western. The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

With Ari Aster now in production on Eddington and Kevin Costner soon debuting 50% of his four-part Horizon, it looks like the western is back in style just as the superhero craze finally fades out. Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Jim Sheridan has dispelled rumors around a possible return to acting by Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the Irish director’s drama My Left Foot and also starred in his subsequent films In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer.
Rumors have been rife that Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, might be contemplating a return to the big screen after he was photographed by paparazzi coming out of a New York restaurant with Sheridan and Steven Spielberg in early January.
Sheridan said the trio had been holding a meeting about a possible reboot of his long-gestating project about the Kennedy family, focused on its social climber-patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor,” said Sheridan.

Upscale crossover sales agent Latido Films has acquired international sales rights to “Re-creation,” directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan, whose “In the Name of the Father” won a Berlin Golden Bear in 1994.
Starring Vicky Krieps, a Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner for “Corsage,” the docu-drama is co-written and co-directed by Irish artist and filmmaker David Merriman (“Rock Against Homelessness”). It will be unveiled to buyers at the European Film Market.
Like Sheridan’s prior five-hour documentary, SkyCrime’s “Murder at the Cottage,” “Re-creation” turns on what the earlier title calls Ireland’s most shocking unresolved crime whose victim, French TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was battered to death at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland, in 1996.
A fiction/reality hybrid feature, “Re-creation” introduces a fictional jury, inspired by Sidney Lumet’s “12 Angry Men,” which sifts through the facts, lies and convenient truths behind the murder, Sheridan told Variety.

With production underway, we slotted Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother fairly high on our list of the 100 most-anticipated films of 2024 with the hopes it’ll arrive by year’s end. As filming wrapped in New Jersey, it’s moved to Dublin where a new cast member has been unveiled thanks to set photos.
Joining Cate Blanchett, who last worked with Jim Jarmusch a decade ago playing dual roles (including herself) in the 2003 anthology Coffee & Cigarettes, is Vicky Krieps. As one can see in the set photos via Daily Mail, Blanchett’s character is sporting a bookish look while Krieps is in all-pink.
While no specific plot details have been unveiled, Jarmusch first revealed the project last year where he called it “a funny and sad film.” Check out the set photos below as we await more info.

The eagerly awaited second part of French director Martin Bourboulon’s rollicking Three Musketeers adaptation, following on from Part One (D’Artagnan), released earlier this year. In the process he uncovers a sinister plot to overthrow King Louis Xiii (Louis Garrel) and discovers that Constance’s life is in danger because she witnessed the secret identity of the mastermind behind the scheme.

All for one and … two for all?
In a bold move, French film studio Pathé bet nearly $80 million on an all-star, double-barreled adaptation of “The Three Musketeers,” gambling that interest would be high enough that director Martin Bourboulon could split Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling epic over two films, spaced half a year apart, and audiences would show up for both halves. The gamble paid off, as the first part — “The Three Musketeers – Part One: D’Artagnan,” released last April — was a huge hit, and appetites remain strong for the sequel, which opens in France on Dec. 13.
In the States, however, where “Kill Bill,” “The Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning” have paved the way for two-part blockbusters, that strategy seems less certain. A series of disappointing screen versions has tarnished the legend. It would be easy to eventize a double bill, marketed to fanboys and action-movie enthusiasts, in which all four...

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis was treated like royalty on the set of his last film Phantom Thread. But this rubbed one of his co-stars the wrong way behind the scenes.
Why Daniel Day-Lewis’ ‘Phantom Threads’ co-star had an unpleasant time on set of the film Daniel Day-Lewis | Lars Niki/Corbis via Getty Images
Day-Lewis found himself co-starring alongside the much younger Vicky Krieps in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Krieps ended up playing more than a love interest, and became a formidable romantic foil for Day-Lewis’ character. She didn’t do any extensive research on Day-Lewis before being cast in the film. This meant she knew very little about her co-star and his famous method acting.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Krieps remembered being put off by everyone accommodating the actor’s preferences. She also mocked the cast and crew’s seemingly unwarranted reaction to the actor.

When it comes to the post-summer box office blues, Taylor Swift: Eras Tour has helped shake it off. The film’s phenomenal success — it’s already the top-grossing concert film of all time in North America, not adjusted for inflation — as well as its unique rollout, in which Swift teamed up directly teaming directly with AMC Theaters, bypassing traditional studio distribution, is a bright light in an independent movie market sorely in need of some good news.
Sadly, there is only one Taylor Swift. The rest of the independent film world, representatives of which will be gathering in Santa Monica for the American Film Market Oct. 31-Nov. 5, sees few reasons to dance in the aisles.

There have been many attempts to adapt Alexandre Dumas’ beloved swash-buckling story to the big screen. From Disney’s The Three Musketeers to Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers to the D’Artagnan solo story, The Musketeer, Alexandre Dumas’ tale has been told again and again. However, Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé are attempting to tell the story with a faithful adaptation that will take two movies to convey. The new trailer for the French historical epic, The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan, has now been unveiled.
The official synopsis from Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé reads,
“In the first entry, D’Artagnan, a spirited young Gascon, is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. When he arrives in Paris, he tries to find his attackers. He is unaware that his quest will lead him to the heart of a real war where the future of France is at stake.

"We're killers, D'Artagnan, like it or not." Pathe has revealed the first official trailer for the epic sequel The Three Musketeers 2: Milady, arriving in theaters in Europe this December. A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

When the Body Speaks: Krieps & Ulliel Fight for the Right Balance in Atef’s Final Voyage Drama
A too young to die portrait that sees a neutralized Vicky Krieps travel northwards to find her pathway…inwards, Emily Atef’s latest is a non-postcard, straight-forward account of reconnecting with self — not at the most opportune moment, but when it matters most. Made more noteworthy due to it being Gaspard Ulliel’s final screen performance – he fastens his supportive boyfriend character with various degrees of cerebral rage displaying a splintered soul being asked to let go in more ways than one. A melodrama without deep chills, Plus que jamais (More Than Ever) sees Atef make some bolder narrative moves in the film’s second half, ultimately once the film steps foot in Scandi-territory we get some unexpected turns, punches, nips, tucks and forward momentum that makes this a worthy essay on a...

Hélène Mouchet (Vicky Krieps) is probably dying. She has been diagnosed with an idiopathic fibrosis of the lungs, meaning none of her doctors really has much idea of how to treat her condition. They do know that it will eventually result in suffocation, unless she is able to undergo a lung transplant — which is far from certain to work. In “More Than Ever,” a thoughtful, well-acted drama from writer-director Emily Atef (changing the pace from her work on TV’s “Killing Eve”), this setup is the basis for an exploration, through the lens of one woman’s experience, of how serious disease might be faced, both medically and socially. Strand Releasing is bringing the film to U.S. audiences more than a year after its Un Certain Regard premiere in Cannes.
Hélène finds the awkward response of her social circle unendurable; people mean well, but are terrified of saying the wrong thing.

Vicky Krieps is no ordinary actress. Paul Thomas Anderson knew that when he hired her to stand up to Daniel Day-Lewis in 2017’s “Phantom Thread.” After that breakout role, the Luxembourg-born actress was inundated with Hollywood offers. She chose to keep herself grounded with her German husband and two children (now 8 and 12) in Berlin, turning down the studio films — and a lot of potential paydays — that came her way. She never took on a Hollywood agent. Casting agents got the message, and she has been sent more quality fare ever since.
“I remember people saying I was stupid,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview, sitting on the lobby stairs in a quiet corner of the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Her indie Western, directed by and co-starring Viggo Mortensen, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” was on offer at the annual festival.

Aporia (Jared Moshé)
What would your life be like if you didn’t go to work the day an accident would otherwise change everything? How much of your future might shift if you decide to simply alter your schedules to better accommodate picking up your child from school? One question seems bigger than the other, yet the second may actually impact what occurs next more. Because you can’t know for certain. And there aren’t any do-overs. Perhaps it’s better that way, to accept and move on rather than risk an even worse fate. Or is it? That’s what writer-director Jared Moshé seeks to contemplate with his grounded science fiction drama Aporia. – Jared M. (full review)
