I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with star Jaeden Martell and director John Lee Hancock and pick their brain a bit about Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. I was able to see the film myself (Check out the review here) and I absolutely loved it. As a big fan of coming-of-age films, this was a great watch and made me very excited to talk to these two.
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone synopsis:
When Craig, a young boy living in a small town (Jaeden Martell) befriends Mr. Harrigan, an older, reclusive billionaire (Donald Sutherland), the two begin to form an unlikely bond over their love of books and reading. But when Mr. Harrigan sadly passes away, Craig discovers that not everything is dead and gone and strangely finds himself able to communicate with his friend from the grave through the iPhone in this supernatural coming-of-age story that shows that certain connections are never lost.

The Stephen King adaptation renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down, in large part thanks to Netflix, which has recently brought three of the author's short stories to our screens. Joining the streamer's library alongside Mike Flanagan's "Gerald's Game," Zak Hilditch's "1922," and Vincenzo Natali's "In The Tall Grass," Netflix has finally released a trailer for the upcoming film, "Mr. Harrigan's Phone," another movie based on a chilling story from the famed horror writer. This time around, the supernatural is clashing with one of the scariest concepts of all: growing up. The film comes from writer-director John Lee Hancock and stars Jaeden Martell and Donald Sutherland in the lead roles.
Coming-of-age drama takes center stage in this story about Craig (Martell), a teenage boy befriending a reclusive billionaire (Sutherland as the titular Mr. Harrigan). They form a bond so strong that not even death can split them...

"My Grandma always used to say: a person shouldn't call out unless they want an answer." Netflix has revealed the first trailer for Mr. Harrigan's Phone, another creepy, mysterious Stephen King adaptation from the streamer. Remember how good Gerald's Game was? Sounds like just the right treat for this year's Halloween season. A boy and an aging billionaire bond over books — and their first iPhones. When the man passes, their mysterious connection refuses to die as the two continue to communicate through the iPhone. From Ryan Murphy, Blumhouse Film and Stephen King comes a supernatural coming-of-age story, starring Donald Sutherland and Jaeden Martell. The supporting cast also includes Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Colin O’Brien, Cyrus Arnold, Thomas Francis Murphy, & Peggy J. Scott. This looks dang good!! I dig the use of the phone vibration sound as part of the score in the trailer - nice work, Netflix. ›››

The official trailer for Netflix’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone warns that some connections never die and that you shouldn’t call out unless you want an answer. The trailer reveals that the bond between a bullied teenager and an elderly gentleman doesn’t end once the old man passes away. As for the warning not to call out…well, the old guy apparently wasn’t the nicest man in town before he died.
The cast is led by Jaeden Martell as Craig and Donald Sutherland (The Undoing) as the titular character. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Colin O’Brien, Cyrus Arnold, Thomas Francis Murphy, and Peggy J. Scott also star.
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is based on a short story by Stephen King. John Lee Hancock adapted King’s work and directed the 2022 horror film. Ryan Murphy, Jason Blum, and Carla Hacken serve as producers.
Netflix has set a Wednesday, October 5, 2022 premiere date.

Netflix has released the first photos from Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a 2022 film based on a short story by Stephen King. Adapted and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars Donald Sutherland as Harrigan and Jaeden Martell as a young man who befriends the elderly Hannigan.
While most, but definitely not all, of Stephen King’s work scares the hell out of readers, Hancock describes this particular story as more of a cautionary fairy tale.
“More than anything, it’s about an odd relationship between a billionaire in his 80s and a [young man] and the bonds of friendship, and how far will you go for a friend?” writer/director Hancock said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Do you like Shawshank Redemption, do you like Stand By Me,...

McIntosh reprises the role here, but her film has both a different focus and a different sensibility, skilfully blending coming-of-age and horror tropes to entertaining effect.
The film begins with the still-feral, nature-dwelling Woman (McIntosh) bringing an equally feral young woman – Darlin’, played by Lauren Canny and so named for the bracelet around her wrist – to the door of a hospital and leaving her there, for reasons that will eventually become clear. When I first heard about Darlin’ I was immediately interested in seeing it. Why? Well… Pollyanna McIntosh is an actress I’ve been a fan of since her incredible performance in the Lucky McKee film The Woman back in 2011. Since then I’ve enjoyed her in numerous roles, from White Settlers to to Let Us Prey, and even her role as Jadis in The Walking Dead before I threw in the towel on that show. Seeing McIntosh go behind the camera for the first time here was something that intrigued me greatly.

The debut feature from actor-turned-writer-director Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead), Darlin’ is a stand-alone sequel to Lucky McKee’s visceral 2011 horror The Woman, in which McIntosh starred as an imprisoned feral woman wreaking hell on her captors.
Darlin’ can’t speak and behaves like a wild animal,...

Though his books were seldom issued by major publishing houses, recently deceased author Jack Ketchum has become one of the big screen’s more frequently adapted U.S. novelists. “Darlin’” isn’t based on a Ketchum tome, per se, but it does have a through line to his work: It’s a sequel to Lucky McKee’s 2011 “The Woman,” which followed Andrew van den Houten’s 2009 “Offspring,” whose print source was a sequel to Ketcham’s 1980 debut novel “Off Season.” Ketchum earned writing credits on both films, and “Off Season” was the start of a series about a cannibalistic clan in the woods of rural Maine. At the end of “The Woman,” the titular feral captive of a “civilized” family kills her keepers and returns to the wilderness, the family’s children in tow.

Low budget police drama meets camp biblical nonsense – demons and the horsemen of the apocalypse. To me The Demonologist sounds like a lot of fun (albeit the title sounds like a failed course from a failing university).
I have a soft spot for under paid, over worked (fictional) professional monster hunters. Be they John Constantine (in the comics), Giles from Buffy or Harry Dresden (in the books). I love these grumpy, surly individuals that ultimately end up doing the right thing when the stakes are stacked high enough against them.
Which takes us nicely into talking about The Demonologist. This is very much an origin story. Our “Demonologist” starts out as just another cliched,...

MGM is re-launching Orion Classics and has named Mike P. Nelson’s thriller The Domestics starring Kate Bosworth and Tyler Hoechlin (Everybody Wants Some!!) as its first release as the studio says it will focus on multiplatform and specialized releases and acquisitions. The label that is rising from the ashes will release eight to 10 films per year across genres, with The Domestics hitting theaters June 28 and then going to VOD and digital the following day.
The move follows last year’s resurrection of the Orion label and naming of John Hegeman as its president. Orion Classics will be run day to day by Sam Wollman, MGM’s Svp Acquisitions; he will work in conjunction with Hegeman and MGM President of Worldwide Television and Acquisitions Chris Ottinger. Orion Pictures’ first film, Every Day, was released into theaters in February and grossed $6.1M.

It’s been interesting watching Matthew McConaughey make project decisions after winning his Academy Award. He has gone big with epics like Interstellar and gone small with the still unreleased Sea of Trees, but this week he’s trying something new. Basically, he’s attempting to bring back the Civil War film with Free State of Jones. This type of movie is rarely done right and usually is super dry, so it’s a tall order, but starring one of our most exciting actors right now, there’s a chance, right? Well, this turns out to be a total bore, plodding and sometimes strangely tone deaf to the racial dynamics on display. The saving grace is McConaughey though, even if you can’t quite see what he saw in this material. There’s moments of entertainment and righteous indignation, but too often it’s just a poorly thought out history lesson.

One week after it premiered its first full web series, New Form Digital has returned with a second. The young studio co-founded by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Communications has brought The Parallax Theory, a sci-fi thriller helmed by YouTube star Sawyer Hartman, to the creator-friendly Vimeo On Demand selling platform.
While it was born out of the same batch of pilots that begat Oscar’s Hotel, The Parallax Theory is very different from New Form’s other new series. While Oscar’s Hotel is a whimsical romp through the colorful halls of its titular establishment, The Parallax Theory is a moody sci-fi thriller centered on a scientist who must warn the world of impending calamity. The first episode is now available for purchase on Vimeo On Demand, where interested viewers can also watch the show’s trailer:
