Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something simultaneously exciting and horrifying about discovering the worst entry of the Amityville “franchise” more than 35 films in. And yet, Amityville Hex truly is *that* bad.
The first of writer /director Tony Newton’s two entries, 2021’s Amityville Hex is a disaster in nearly every way. From amateur acting to a repetitive script to an egregiously long (and unearned) runtime, the film embodies all of the negative qualities that have earned “Amityville” films derision and mockery.
Modeled on the screenlife model popularized by Host and, to a lesser extent Unfriended and Searching, Newton’s film focuses on vloggers who participate in “the Amityville Hex”, which involves reading a chant on camera, then documenting the aftermath.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

Murdercise, the latest film from Paul Ragsdale and Angelica De Alba who previously gave us Streets of Vengeance and Slashlorette Party looks at an 80s fad that’s been surprisingly underutilized in retro films, the aerobic workout video craze.
For those unfamiliar with it, it involved several models in skin-tight leotards or skimpy bathing suits bouncing around doing various fat-burning and body-toning moves with the viewer following along at home breaking a sweat and getting into shape. More commonly it was bought by desperately horny guys who couldn’t get their hands on Playboy videos and were sweating for an entirely different reason.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Pool Party Massacre
Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.
The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

But trouble arises when the two pals and a group of friends take a detour on their way to a rock concert, finding an old abandoned barn and awakening the evil inside. So, if a movie opens with a cut throat, followed by an 8-bit video game style opening beneath the screams of punk rock… erm… count me in!
The 80s inspirations of Pool Party Massacre are evident from the outset. It never takes itself too seriously. It’s part comedy and part schlocky horror, and it’s a pile of fun. I’ve heard people mention it being like an 1980s slasher meshed with a Mean Girls type high school flick, and I can see why. It has funny and ridiculous dialogue, practical and over-the-top gore and a plot that doesn’t do anything new yet is paced well and hits the spot. I think many...

Floating Eye Films have released the first trailer and poster, by the always awesome SadistArt Designs, for the old school splatterfest Pool Party Massacre – the debut feature from horror fanatic Drew Marvick, who – if you aren’t aware – is essentially a one-man horror empire, dipping his toe in numerous genre projects in the Las Vegas area (though I’m still upset that his Nerd Caves TV-show concept never came to full fruition). With his debut feature Marvick has crafted a loving homage to the body count of 80s B-movies.
Blair Winthorpe, a high-maintenance young socialite, is having a pool party while her parents are out of town. What should have been a relaxing summer day spent tanning for the girls quickly becomes a blood soaked nightmare when an unknown guest crashes the party. He finds a garage full of dangerous toys and gets to work stalking and dismembering them one by one.
