After Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s M3GAN took audiences (and TikTok) by storm, plans to expand the artificial intelligence-centric horror property are in full swing with the M3GAN spin-off, SOULM8TE, on the way. According to Deadline, Evil Dead Rise actress Lily Sullivan will play the lead in SOULM8TE, a beautiful companion bot trying to help a grieving man cope with the loss of his wife.
In SOULM8TE, Sullivan’s artificial intelligence love bot becomes more when a man inadvertently turns the harmless droid into a deadly soulmate. While SOULM8TE is considered a part of the M3GAN universe, sources close to the project clarify that SOULM8TE is a more mature and risqué horror thriller. The project resembles ’90s domestic thrillers, such as Sleeping with the Enemy, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and Dangerous Intentions. M3GAN is getting a cousin, or something.
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster officially merged earlier this year, and we're starting to get more information on their planned collaborative horror projects.
First, they announced a new Lee Cronin's (Evil Dead Rise) horror movie, and now Variety reports that they will release a techno-thriller titled Soulm8te to be set in the M3GAN universe. M3GAN will also get a direct sequel, M3GAN 2.0, which will be released on June 27, 2025.
Said to be in the style of the classic 1990s erotic/domestic thrillers, Soulm8te is about a grieving widower who acquires an android to take the place of his late wife. “In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.” Sounds kind of like Fatal Attraction meets Her.

The M3GAN universe is expanding as Blumhouse is planning a new entry into the franchise with Soulm8te.
M3GAN was one of 2023’s biggest hits. After the trailer went viral, expectations were high for the creepy robot doll movie and the film more than delivered on the promise of campy horror with a side of thoughtful exploration of AI.
We already knew that a M3GAN sequel was on the way, but Blumhosue and Atomic Monster are also working on another film set in the same universe. Titled Soulm8te, the film is set for release in 2026.
Variety reports that the film will follow a man who “acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife.” That seems like a great idea. We hope nothing goes wrong!

Looking for some exciting MCU news to liven up your Friday morning? Look no further! Yes, the MCU — that's the M3GAN Cinematic Universe, of course — is branching out. With M3GAN 2.0 already under construction, Deadline are reporting that Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are hard at work on SOULM8TE, a 90s style erotic thriller spin-off film to be directed by You Are Not My Mother's Kate Dolan.
James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan have devised the story for SOULM8TE, with Dolan rewriting the film's latest draft. Per Deadline's reporting, the plot for this one will follow a man who gets an AI android to help cope with his wife's death, only for the bot to turn deadly. It's an intriguing premise that calls to mind Black Mirror's brilliant Hayley Atwell and Domhnall Gleeson episode 'Be Right Back' (only more murderous). And given the emotional rawness...

James Wan built the Conjuring Universe out of his 2013 film The Conjuring, producing sequels, spin-offs, a Universe-adjacent film (The Curse of La Llorona), and now there’s a TV series in the works. While the sequel M3GAN 2.0 is in the works and aiming for a June 27, 2025 theatrical release, Deadline reports that the recently merged companies Atomic Monster (headed up by Wan) and Blumhouse Productions (headed up by Jason Blum) are developing SOULM8TE, “a new movie in the M3GAN universe.” Universal Pictures has already picked out a release date for the film: January 2, 2026.

The "M3GAN" universe is expanding beyond the pint-sized killer bestie for children, and giving something wild as hell for adult viewers who need something a little stronger than a cartwheel and a creepy rendition of David Guetta and Sia's "Titanium" to give them a good scare. As was announced today, Blumhouse Productions and James Wan's Atomic Monster are currently developing "SOULM8TE," a 1990s-style erotic thriller "with a new technological twist." We have been in a drought of good erotic thrillers for years, so this announcement is exciting, overdue, and exactly the type of project Blumhouse needs to get audiences hyped after this lackluster 2024. Here's the film's very intriguing synopsis:
In "SOULM8TE," a man acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.

If you liked seeing the “M3GAN” robot dancing, the cinematic universe is about to get a lot kinkier.

We’re thinking “Cruel Intentions,” “Wild Things,” “Basic Instinct,” “Sliver,” or earlier ’80s movies like “Body Heat” or “Fatal Attraction,” but with a killer robot.

M3GAN, the hit horror movie from James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, is getting a spinoff.
The two companies known for their horror output, are in active development on SOULM8TE, a thriller that expands the M3GAN universe, according to Wan and Blum, who are producing the project.
SOULM8TE is on the fast-track: the project is already dated for a Jan. 2, 2026 release via Universal. That’s a similar berth as M3GAN, which opened Jan. 6, 2023 before going on to dance its way to a $181 million worldwide.
Kate Dolan, who helmed the 2021 thriller You Are Not My Mother, is on board to direct the feature. She also rewrote the script, which was originally written by Rafael Jordan (Salvage Marines). The story is by Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Jordan.

Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are developing “Soulm8te”, an erotic thriller with a technological twist that expands the “M3GAN” universe.
“Soulm8te” centers on a man who “acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife,” the film’s synopsis explains. “In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.” The film is described as being in the tradition of “’90s domestic thrillers but with a modern, technological twist.”

Six decades or so ago, television was dominated by "wholesome" American family sitcoms, with shows like "Leave It to Beaver," "The Andy Griffith Show," and "Father Knows Best" serving as not only entertainment but as a model guide for viewers to emulate their own "perfect family." Assimilation was the key to an idyllic existence, but that doesn't make for an exciting TV lineup. Each network had its standard American family show, but in an attempt to motivate viewers not to touch that dial, they started diversifying what a family looked like.
No, that diversity did not come in the form of families of non-white races ("Good Times" wouldn't launch until 1974), but it did come with magical beings like "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched," or monstrously weird like "The Addams Family" and "The Munsters." Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer has a whole lot of projects in the works at Paramount, from a new version of Sleepy Hollow to a film inspired by the American Girl toy brand – but that isn’t stopping her from teaming up with Universal Content Productions and genre regular James Wan (as well as his wife Ingrid Bisu) to develop a TV series called 1313, which is described as being a darker reimagining of the 1964 classic sitcom The Munsters. If 1313 gets a series order, Anderson Beer will be serving as the showrunner.
According to Deadline, 1313 will be “a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse,” which makes sense, since the Munsters family included vampires, a little werewolf, and a version of Frankenstein’s Monster. As for the title of this new project, it comes from the fact that the Munsters lived in a house with the address 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

We're returning to 1313 Mockingbird Lane yet again for a new television version of The Munsters, this time planned as a "darker reimagining" of the series.
Horror icon James Wan is producing a new series for Universal Studio Group (Usg) alongside showrunner Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) and Ingrid Bisu. Wan's company, Atomic Monster, will produce this latest iteration alongside Lab Brew. The original 1964 sitcom initially aired on CBS for 70 episodes from 1964 to 1966.
According to Variety, the logline for this new version of The Munsters describes it as a horror show that "lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse." Between this, the recent success of Abigail (which was based on Dracula's Daughter), and the upcoming Wolf Man from Leigh Whannell, it seems like Universal is intent on making their "Dark Universe" work, even if it doesn't end up being interconnected like the MCU.

In the wake of Rob Zombie’s direct-to-video movie The Munsters back in 2022, Universal has now announced “1313,” a brand new small screen reboot of the iconic television series.
Developed and produced by James Wan’s company Atomic Monster, the new Universal horror series is said to be “a reimagining of the 1964 classic sitcom The Munsters that lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse.”
Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) will serve as the showrunner for “1313.” The title is of course a reference to the Munster family’s address, 1313 Mockingbird Lane.
Deadline notes in their report, “The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer, and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.”
Executive producers are Lindsey Anderson Beer and James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Ingrid Bisu is a co-exec producer on the upcoming series.

Think The Munsters, but way more grim.
UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.
Lindsey Anderson Beer is set to showrun the drama. The project is being developed by James Wan, Beer and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and Lab Brew are the production companies.
Executive producers are Beer and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu is a co-exec producer.
The last time someone tried to dust off The Munsters for the small screen was in 2017, when NBC opted to reboot the comedy with Odd Mom Out creator Jill Kargman and Seth Meyers. The half-hour single-camera version was going to follow members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.

We didn’t catch word of this when it happened, but it has been revealed that short filmmaker Adam Cosco recently filed a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit against Malignant director James Wan and his wife Ingrid Bisu, claiming the film plagiarized a screenplay he had written called Little Brother. Thankfully, the details are the lawsuit are just now coming to light because the case has been settled.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cosco claimed that Ryan Turek of Blumhouse had access to his Little Brother script and passed it over to Wan, who then used it as the basis for Malignant. Wan denied ever receiving or reading the script, but the lawsuit pointed out that there were several similarities between the two works. The complaint pointed out that “both screenplays feature a twist that the protagonist has her twin brother absorbed inside her in the form of a malignant tumor,...

James Wan’s Atomic Monster has settled a copyright and breach of contract lawsuit from a writer who accused the prolific horror movie producer of ripping off his screenplay to make Malignant.
Adam Cosco on Sunday moved to dismiss the case after reaching a deal to resolve the lawsuit. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Cosco, a writer and director on several short films, sued in 2022, claiming that his screenplay for Little Brother was plagiarized. He alleged that Wan, who wrote and directed Malignant, got his work through Ryan Turek, vice president of feature film development at Blumhouse who has collaborated with the horror director on projects.

James Wan is “safe and on the mend,” after being rushed to the ER earlier this week, his wife Ingrid Bisu said in an Instagram story on his account.
“It has been an extremely rough and scary couple of days and nights,” Bisu wrote on Thursday, before going on to thank the staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
“You never want to rush to the ER in the middle of the night and then have to stay in the hospital. Cedars Sinai is truly the best!! The best doctors, nurses, technicians, just the most wonderful people. James is safe now and on the mend,” she said in a captioned photo of Wan sitting up in a hospital bed, which you can see below.

Exclusive: James Wan’s Atomic Monster has teamed with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios on Concrete Jungle, an urban nature docuseries.
Based on an original idea from Wan and Ingrid Bisu, Concrete Jungle is described as “not your typical natural history show”. It follows the secret lives of urban animals – food foraging and hunting, dating and mating habits, internal clashes and turf wars with other species — and these aren’t the traditional, majestic animals from exotic, picturesque places like the African savanna or South Asian jungles.
Per the description, it “stars grungy, hardened, and clever critters abiding in the gritty Concrete Jungles of America, from bobcats to crows to coyotes to squirrels and more. Taking a darker, and also comedic perspective, the series will track the unexpected lives of these local animals as they live below us, above us, in our backyards and even in our walls,...

Thanks to strong reviews, a buzzy trailer and young fans celebrating the film on TikTok, “M3GAN” is about to top 100 million worldwide. The Gerard Johnstone-directed film was sold as yet another horror team-up between Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, with both moguls now famous enough among horror fans for such a pitch to qualify as akin to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas uniting for “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
The film’s not-so-secret weapon, however, is its screenwriter Akela Cooper. The self-professed genre nerd isn’t yet a household name, but she may be on her way to becoming one.
Cooper took time last week to speak with TheWrap, discussing the origins of “M3GAN,” trimming the initially R-rated film to a PG-13 and inserting her parents into the “Star Trek” universe. Most importantly, she answered tough questions about the biggest plot hole in her 2018 slasher romp “Hell Fest.

The horror fandom is one of the most dedicated and passionate cultural communities in existence, with countless conventions, festivals, and celebrations happening year-round — all connected by the mutual appreciation for frightful films. Some may go so far as to call the horror fandom a "family," but in the case of two of horror's most promising young actors, that description is literal. Madeleine and Violet McGraw are both still in their adolescent years, but have given performances in horror films that some adult actors could only dream of pulling off. Oftentimes, memorable horror performances from children are rooted in the "killer kid" subgenre, but for the McGraw sisters, the young performers both shine as hero protagonists.

If you look at James Wan's career since the beginning, it's impressive how far he has come in a relatively short time. A horror maestro, most now know the director for his work on "The Conjuring" universe. The frightful film franchise started out focusing on the paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, before expanding to cover all the supernatural entities that have been directly or indirectly involved in the Warrens' lives.
If they didn't know Wan from his work on that IP, most audiences today may associate him now with the balls-to-the-wall horror film "Malignant." The movie with a shocking twist ruled the internet for months after its release last year, producing memes focusing on the villainous Gabriel. A horror film that was fun and didn't take itself seriously was just what horror audiences needed, and Wan and his wife, Ingrid Bisu, delivered.

With the recent trailer release of "M3GAN," which features many outrageous moments that have already been gif-ed and meme-ed many times over, another movie is back in the discussion ring. This article contains spoilers for "Malignant" and "Barbarian."
I went into "Barbarian" knowing nothing about the film beyond its logline and main cast. Dear reader, believe me when I tell you it was the best way possible to enjoy writer and director Zach Cregger's horror movie, a subversive take on the genre where the red herrings and misdirection are virtually indistinguishable from the actual foreshadowing. I would say I can't remember the last time a film took me on such a wild and unpredictable ride, but that isn't true. It was almost exactly a year to the day ago when the gonzo, go-for-broke swing that is James Wan's "Malignant" came out.
Both "Malignant" and "Barbarian" center on people who, when the films begin, are stuck in toxic situations. In "Malignant," Annabelle Wallis plays Madison, a pregnant woman who has had multiple miscarriages and is married to an abusive husband.

When most people imagine a movie monster, they probably think of one of horror's iconic creatures: a zombie lurching in a graveyard, a vampire hunting its prey, a werewolf transforming in the moonlight. But even the classics occasionally get old. Over the years, horror films have become more adventurous with their premises, expanding the concept of what a "monster" is and can be in cinema.
Maybe the monster is a masked human being with homicidal impulses. Sometimes monsters are personifications of concepts -- like grief, rage, or the fear of losing touch with reality. Evil gingerbread cookies, a rampaging tire, or a carnivorous bed can appear on the screen. There have been some weird horror movie monsters. Lately, filmmakers seem ready to shock and surprise audiences by subverting our expectations. Grab your popcorn, be wary of incoming spoilers, and get ready to be appalled, delighted, and terrified. "Malignant," the latest horror flick from James Wan, was released last week and it rightfully generated a great deal of conversation online, largely thanks to that totally bonkers ending. As it turns out, the big reveal at the end of the movie was largely done practically with little help from CGI. This is, to put it mildly, impressive.
Warning: major spoilers ahead for "Malignant." proceed with caution.
Gabriel, the half-absorbed twin of the movie's protagonist, Madison (Annabelle Wallis), makes one heck of an entrance in the movie's third act. As story writer and executive producer Ingrid Bisu recently explained to our own...

The latest horror flick from director James Wan, Malignant is a bizarre mixture of the brilliant and the terrible. It’s hard to think of a comparable film that hits both the highs and the lows that Malignant does. As a result, it’s entirely possible that you’ll love it and hate it in equal measure.
The film begins with a terribly acted prologue in which an unseen entity kills lots of people in a hospital and a po-faced doctor declares, “It’s time to cut out the cancer!” We then cut to the present day, where heavily pregnant Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is beaten by her abusive husband (Jake Abel), so badly that the back of her head bleeds profusely.
