Charlize Theron is often front-row at tennis matches and fashion shows — but on Tuesday, she was on the court, playing doubles with No. 1 men’s player Novak Djokovic.
The Oscar winner hosted the 20th annual Desert Smash celebrity tennis tournament to support her charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. The organization funds community-based, locally led groups that work directly with young people in preventing gender-based violence, advocating for sexual reproductive health and rights, and providing access to higher education. For the final match, the Serbian tennis superstar made a surprise appearance, interrupting Theron’s game with Atp champion Frances Tiafoe, comedian Yvonne Orji and two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka.

“Maestro” won awards the two Muahs categories that most closely correspond to the Oscars’ Best Makeup and Hairstyling category: Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.
“Saltburn” won for Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling, while “Barbie” took the award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.
The wins were significant for “Maestro,” which has seen its status as a frontrunner for the Oscar makeup award falter as it lost at BAFTA and the Critics Choice Awards to “Poor Things” and “Barbie,” respectively.
In the first 15 years of the Muahs awards, which ran between 1999 and 2003 and then returned in 2013, the winner for period make-up went on to win the Oscar eight times, while...

“Elvis” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 11 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and hairstyling but lost the special effects race to one of its Oscar rivals, “The Whale.” Another Oscar contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” won contemporary makeup.
These wins boost the odds of one of these three films prevailing at the Academy Awards. Last year marked the only time in the nine-year history of these guild honors that one of its winners had not gone on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While “Coming 2 America” won three awards here, it was “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” that won over academy voters. That biopic had lost both period/character guild awards (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to “Coming 2 America.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
Last year marked the first time in the nine-year history of these guild awards that the eventual Oscar winner was shut out here first. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” lost both period/character races (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to another Oscar contender, “Coming 2 America.” The other two Oscar nominees — “House of Gucci” and “Dune” — were also overlooked by the guild despite three and two bids respectively.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards on the eve of academy members starting to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, seven are vying for these precursor prizes.
“The Batman” and “Elvis” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Amsterdam,” “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Blonde” earned two each; and and “The Whale” has one.
Three films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Crimes of the Future” and “Emancipation” — were snubbed by the guild.
Conversely, several of the Muahs favorites — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Menu,” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

The big reveal of "Don't Worry Darling" wouldn't be the same without the hair and makeup team behind the moment. If you've seen the film already, you know that the Jack we meet at the beginning of the film — played by former One Direction member Harry Styles — is not quite the same guy we come to know by the time the third act starts to roll.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have seen “Don’t Worry Darling,” in theaters now.
Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is set in the blissful utopia of the Victory Project in the 1950s. Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are residents in the insular desert town, where husbands routinely drive off to work, wives wave goodbye, take ballet lessons and prepare dinner. It’s a “Stepford Wives” scenario.
But all is not right, as the women must stay away from their husbands’ office building, Victory HQ, and aren’t allowed to know what they do for work. Soon enough, Alice starts to suspect that even bigger secrets lie underneath the surface of their idealistic life. After a neighbor disappears, she digs deeper.
In the film’s second-act twist, viewers learn that the Victory Project is a present-day VR world where men can control women and turn them into “perfect wives.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Hulu, for this edition we look at how costume designer Kameron Lennox, hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams and special makeup effects designer Jason Collins brought the ’90s back to life for “Pam & Tommy.”
Hulu’s limited series “Pam & Tommy” chronicles the marriage of two of the most iconic and ubiquitous celebrities of the ’90s, “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. The show is both an intimate character study and a sweeping portrait of an era, which created both inspiring opportunities and daunting challenges for the filmmakers tasked with comparing and contrasting the public and private lives of Pam, Tommy, and the members of their circle during the most dramatic period in their relationship.

“It is a cherry on top of what was a wonderful experience,” says “Pam and Tommy” editor Tatiana Riegel about the Hulu series earning 10 Emmy nominations, including Best Limited Series. “It is particularly wonderful because both ‘I, Tonya’ (for which Riegel was Oscar nominated) and this were directed by Craig Gillespie, with whom I work quite often. Makeup department head Carleigh Herbert has always been obsessed with period pieces, and the ’70s have always been a favorite.“There was so much self-expression,” she says. So, when the chance to work on HBO Max’s “Minx” came along, she snapped it up.
One particular scene, halfway through the show’s first episode, posed a unique challenge for Herbert. Ophelia Lovibond’s Joyce is tasked with casting models for Minx, the first porn magazine designed for women. What follows is a parade of male models baring and strutting their stuff for the casting call.

Hair and makeup artists are at it again, transforming actors into real-life characters. From the sublime to complete, Jared Leto, Jessica Biel, Lily James, Sebastian Stan and Renée Zellweger were among those being trans- formed and techniques including 3D scans of the artist are de rigueur now.

Though “Pam & Tommy” may take some creative license in telling its story, the recreation of Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) and Pamela Anderson (Lily James) at the height of their fame/infamy is unimpeachable. More than any of the needle drops or the script’s wide-eyed wonderment at VHS and the internet, it is the work of the hair and makeup teams that bring the entire era to life. IndieWire spoke to hair department head Barry Lee Moe, makeup department head David Williams, and makeup special effects designer Jason Collins about tackling that challenge.
“I got [Tommy’s] piercings from Body Electric on Melrose, and I simply took in a photo of Tommy Lee’s chest,” Williams said. “And the man who owns the shop asked, ‘Are you working with Tommy Lee?’ And I said, ‘Well, not exactly, but why do you ask if that’s Tommy Lee?’ [And he said] ‘I know those tattoos!’ It...

What better time to watch a film about people being quarantined that during a worldwide lockdown? Probably bad timing or poor taste but here we are…
Set in a small rural community which is quarantined by an alien presence, Alien Outbreak follows local police officers Zoe and Patrick as they battle through the night to take control after being cut off from the outside world. Residents begin to behave strangely and mass panic spreads throughout. With the help of others, Zoe and Patrick begin unraveling the mystery and soon discover it is not all as it seems.
Ok, Ok. So Alien Outbreak is not about a natural-born killer virus making everyone stay indoor and over-shop for toilet paper and pasta.

With fewer than 100 days until the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy has become one of the most prominent faces of the Games. And it should come as no surprise that the athlete has seen his profile rise in the four years since he took home a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games, where he also became famous for rescuing four pups and their mother (aka the Sochi Strays) and earned the nickname “Gus Swoon-worthy.”
But most notably, a few months after returning home from Russia, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay, in an October 2015 interview with Espn the Magazine. He quickly became recognized and celebrated as one of only a few out American male athletes, joining the ranks of soccer player Robbie Rogers, NBA pro Jason Collins, and NFL newbie Michael Sam, who all came out just a couple of years prior.
