“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th annual Casting Society Artios Awards.
The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.
With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.
Ava DuVernay was this year’s recipient of the Lynn Stalmaster Award Career Achievement. While accepting her award, DuVernay took the time to acknowledge the Academy governors who advocated for this new...

Working on Netflix’s singular sketch show “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson,” casting director Leslie Woo has looked at actors for about 160 different roles. Season 2 of the series largely picks up where the first left off: banal corporate meetings that careen into chaos, off-kilter ads for fictional products and services, friendly misunderstandings that devolve into madness.
But putting this follow-up season together, particularly from the casting side, brought some significant changes. Notably, since the first season had already been released when the Season 2 engine was revving up, anyone reading for a part in these latest episodes had a decent idea of what they would be thrown into. That wasn’t necessarily the case the first time around.
“Season 1, I was probably reading 60 to 70 people a day. It would just be a little bit more time consuming having to explain what it was, what the format was, and the tone of it.

There aren’t many recognizable faces in “Finding ‘Ohana,” Netflix’s adorably entertaining reimagining of “The Goonies” set in Hawaii. Though Chris Parnell and Marc Evan Jackson jazz up some very funny “Drunk History”-inspired scenes, the speaking roles include Branscombe Richmond, a veteran Hawaiian actor who played owner of the bar where Jason Segel sings his Dracula musical in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” There’s also Ke Huy Quan, harder to recognize since his 20-year retirement from acting, in a supporting role. Quan was a childhood hero for many Asian American kids, who first saw themselves onscreen in his performances in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and of course, “The Goonies.”
One of those kids was Jude Weng, now a prolific director on beloved TV comedies “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “The Good Place,” and “Fresh Off the Boat,” making her splashy feature debut with “Finding ‘Ohana.” (The film reached the...

Watching the viral buzz surrounding Netflix’s hilarious new series “I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson” spread to every corner of the internet was a delight. Released April 23, the sketch show headlined by the aforementioned “Saturday Night Live” writer slowly picked up speed on Twitter, with users chattering about how Bart Harvey Jarvis is a terrible baby and how Paul has no good car ideas, mystifying anyone not wise to the delightfully bizarro mind of Robinson.
The central theme of each sketch appearing in the six episodes of the show’s first season — Netflix picked up “Itysl” for a second season on June 19 — is that each one is too much. They’re each too loud, too obnoxious, too extreme, too uncomfortable, and ultimately, way too funny. But Robinson isn’t an idiot. He understands that comedy is a delicate balance and to walk that line, you need to know when to pull back.
