American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

HBO has released a featurette on the official Euphoria YouTube channel that delves into the meticulous editing process behind the show’s second season. In a roundtable conversation with creator Sam Levinson and editors Julio C. Perez, Laura Zempel, Aaron I. Butler and Nikola Boyanov, the team recap the best scenes they cut, how they constantly re-worked narrative threads and the “intense privilege” they feel to continue working on the show together. The show follows Rue (Zendaya), a high schooler who struggles with drug addiction, and several of her equally rebellious (and oft-troubled) classmates. Euphoria feels particularly distinct due to its […]

When it came time to edit the final two episodes of “Euphoria” Season 2, editors Julio C. Perez, Laura Zempel, Nikola Boyanov and Aaron I. Butler knew the show’s complicated structure would benefit from their collective skills.
“They were of such one piece that we screened them internally together back-to-back just to know, ‘Okay, does this feel better here? Does this feel better here? What needs what?’ It was like a hive mind – we all knew the footage, we all knew what we were aiming towards, and because we all brought different experiences to the episodes, we were able to work off of each other,” Zempel says of how the team came together. “So it was the best of all worlds where we can all bring our collective minds to these episodes and, hopefully, enhance them because four minds are better than one.”

The American Cinema Editors handed out the Eddie Awards on Friday (Jan. 26). Oscar watchers were in attendance for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton as they are keenly aware that Ace is aces as one of the best indicators of which film takes home the Best Picture Oscar
Since 1990, the film that came up with an Ace went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 17 times. And in seven of the 10 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, the Eddie champ was at least a contender for Best Picture, including last year when both the drama winner (“Arrival”) and the comedy/musical champ (“La La Land”) were among the eight Best Picture nominees that lost the top Oscar to “Moonlight.”

The Producers Guild of America gave out their top film prizes this weekend. The PGA is often indicative of which movie will win Best Picture on Oscar night.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missourihas been sweeping the awards race so far this year, but it looks like the edge may be given over to The Shape of Water, which won the coveted PGA on Saturday night. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the film's biggest competition for a Best Picture Oscar at this rate. To no-one's surprise, Coco won in the animated category and it's a surefire lock for the Animated Feature prize at the Oscars.

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

Nominees for the Producers Guild of America Awards have been revealed, capping off a busy award season week that has already included the Palm Springs Film Festival’s awards gala, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Art Directors and Writers Guild nominations, and the makeup and hairstyling Oscar shortlist — all leading up to Sunday’s Golden Globes.
For the first time, as the result of a tie among the 8,200 PGA voters, not 10 but 11 films will vie for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer, including “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “The Post,” and “Wonder Woman.” Winning this PGA Award typically bodes well for a film’s Best Picture Oscar chances, although last year that was not the case (“La La Land” won at the PGAs, “Moonlight” prevailed at the Academy Awards).

This morning, the American Cinema Editors announced their nominees for 68th annual Ace Eddie Awards. This is one of the most important guilds to take notice of, due to how Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards can often link up to Best Picture. It’s not a perfect correlation, but when looking for hints as to what voters might do, anything helps. Here, they’ve nominated almost all of the likely Best Picture nominees, so that’s a help. In fact, outside of Baby Driver and Molly’s Game, I’d say the other eight contenders here are among the favorites to make the big lineup. Time will tell, of course, but Ace is working from a list of frontrunners this year, that’s for sure. Below you can see the nominees for the Ace Eddie. Last year, the big winners were Arrival and La La Land, though Hacksaw Ridge...

President Trump has claimed that he alone — not Barack Obama or other past presidents — has called “virtually” all families of U.S. soldiers who have died in service since Trump took office in January.
But Gold Star families have since lashed out at Trump over his false claims about past presidents, recalling how they were comforted by Obama and former President George W. Bush as they grieved. Trump was soon forced to walk back what Obama aides called an “outrageous lie,” admitting that his predecessor “probably sometimes and maybe sometimes he didn’t. I don’t know.”

Documentary director Evgeny Afineevsky earned an Oscar nomination for his 2015 film Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom. He returns two years later with Cries from Syria, which premiered this week at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. The film’s editor, Aaron I. Butler, spoke with Filmmaker before the festival about how he and Afineevsky sought to tell this difficult story. Among many issues, Butler discusses the fine line between crafting an honest portrayal of Syria and showing images too brutal for audiences to handle. Winners will be revealed during Ace’s annual black-tie awards ceremony on Friday, February 7, 2014 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

No film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the Ace membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it represents a very accurate bellwether for the eventual Oscar outcome.
