Legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs will be welcoming two guests during this year’s special Halloween presentation of his Shudder series The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, a special that’s called Joe Bob’s Beelzebub Bash – and now that the identities of both of those guests have been revealed, we have a good idea of which movies are going to be shown as well. Last week, we learned that one of the guests will be director Jeff Lieberman – and given that this is a Halloween special with a devilish theme, it’s likely that Lieberman will be there to discuss his 2004 film Satan’s Little Helper. Now, Joe Bob himself has revealed that the second guest is actor David Dastmalchian… and it’s highly probable that the movie Dastmalchian will be there to discuss is Late Night With the Devil, especially since that was a Shudder release.

This essay by Mike Flanagan on his favorite horror movie is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
When I find myself talking to someone familiar with Joel Anderson’s 2008 film (which isn’t often; it remains criminally underseen), our eyes usually go wide, our pitches rise and soon we’re giddily gesturing and speaking in half-thoughts like two people who share a great secret.
It’s a humble film on the surface, a faux documentary chronicling a grieving family who may or may not be experiencing a haunting after the accidental death of their teenage daughter, Alice. It forgoes scares and startles for an ephemeral, inexplicable sense of dread that immediately seeps into the viewer, and I feel it just as acutely today — 20 viewings later — as I did the first time I wandered into Anderson’s deceptive labyrinth of tension,...

Mike Flanagan knows how to get under our skin. The horror auteur gravitates toward themes that deal with generational trauma and cyclical grief, entwined with supernatural manifestations of such visceral emotions. His Netflix horror hits offer a variety of scares: series like "Midnight Mass" mix religion-tinted bouts of vampirism with acute human loss, while his rendition of "The Fall of the House of Usher" maps the disintegration of a generational legacy marked with greed, betrayal, and pain. Apart from helming effective horror films like "Hush" and "Oculus," Flanagan has also adapted seminal literary works, including Stephen King's "Doctor Sleep" and "Gerald's Game," which the director has invested with inimitable depth.
As someone so well-versed with the inner machinations of the genre, is Flanagan easily spooked? Maybe not anymore, but horror movies "scared [him] too much" as a child, until he came to appreciate the terrifying ability of the written word...

Starring MCU and DC Universe alumni David Dastmalchian and Laura Gordon (Undertow), the upcoming horror flick Late Night with the Devil has just released its first official clip from the movie. The film will have its theatrical premiere on March 22, 2024, while Shudder will stream it starting from April 19, 2024. The official synopsis of the movie reveals the following:
Presented in a found footage style, David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the host of a fictional 1970s variety and late-night talk show titled Night Owls with Jack Delroy. A film that is truly transfixing from its very first frame to the moment its eerie end credits roll, Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes' Late Night with the Devil was one of my favorite screenings at last year's Overlook Film Festival. Taking place during a late-night talk show one fateful (and frightful) Halloween in 1977, Late Night with the Devil features a powerfully poignant performance by the always-great David Dastmalchian, and ahead of the film's theatrical release on March 22nd via IFC Films and its April 19th streaming release on Shudder, we have a look at the movie's chilling trailer and fiery poster that warns you to "not adjust your set."

Joel Anderson's "Lake Mungo" is one of the most enduring horror movies of the aughts. While the Australian documentary-style film started small -- it was made on a shoestring budget and premiered at the Sydney Film Festival in 2008 -- the reputation of "Lake Mungo" has only grown in the 15 years since its release. The movie is enigmatic and polarizing. While some horror fans see its mellowly presented talking-head interview structure as mundane, others call it one of the scariest movies of all time thanks to the creeping sense of dread that builds throughout the movie, culminating in a heart-pounding third-act reveal.
Both camps, though, seem to agree that there's more to "Lake Mungo" than meets the eye. The movie about a dead girl's family seeking closure after her drowning includes several clear-cut twists, but also a handful of points of ambiguity -- and scenes that gesture towards interpretations of...

Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.
Few experiences unite people from all walks of life like a fear of the dark. Often surpassing specific concerns of serial killers, monsters, witches, or demons, what we collectively fear most is that mysterious, dark unknown. Anything and everything could be lurking in the shadows just waiting to pounce. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside follows an ancient evil that hides in dark corners while terrorizing its prey. The film follows a troubled teen named Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) terrorized by a flesh-eating demon known as the Pishacha that feasts on negative energy. This malevolent being soon sets its sights on her best friend Samidha (Megan Suri) and begins a campaign of terror hoping to gorge itself on chaos, destruction, and emotional pain.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures have teamed up to produce the horror film Late Night With the Devil, headed up by the Australian writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) and starring David Dastmalchian – whose previous credits include The Boogeyman and The Suicide Squad. The film is currently making the festival rounds, and while it’s not yet known when a wider audience will have a chance to see it, our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a poster for it. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Late Night With the Devil is a “supernatural chiller” that tells the story of the live broadcast of a late-night talk show in 1977 that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. Dastmalchian plays Jack Delroy, the host of the show Night Owls.

Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign) are back with brand new upcoming horror movie Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.
Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, the charismatic host of “Night Owls,” and the film traces the ill-fated taping of a live Halloween special plagued by a demonic presence.
While you wait for a release date, Creepy Duck Design has shared his official poster for Late Night with the Devil, which appropriately carries a retro vibe. Check it out below.

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.
Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?
With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.
Narrative feature honors went to writer-director Paris Zarcilla’s “Raging Grace.” On the surface, the tense story of an undocumented Filipina house cleaner and...

Announced earlier this summer, Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes are next getting behind the camera for Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.
Late Night With the Devil follows the live broadcast of a late-night talk show in 1977, and producer Roy Lee tells Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast in an interview that’ll be uploaded soon that it’s going to be a very unique kind of horror movie.
“We just wrapped Late Night With the Devil,” Lee explains. “I almost didn’t read the script, because I was like, ‘That is such a cheesy title. There is no way this movie is going to be something that’s not going to be just a B-movie.’ But then I was...

U.S. actor David Dastmalchian is attached to star as the host of a late-night talk show that goes horribly wrong in upcoming indie chiller “Late Night With the Devil,” which is currently shooting in Australia.
Directed by Australian writing-directing duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes, “Late Night” is the second title spawned by a multi-picture deal between low-budget U.S. genre label Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Abu Dhabi, following Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher,” which made a splash at Sundance.
Dastmalchian, who in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” played the Twisted Mentat Piter de Vries, a human specially trained to perform mental functions rivaling computers, will next be seen in Amblin’s horror-thriller “Last Voyage of the Demeter,” directed by André Øvredal, and in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

When cinephiles talk about film, we often find ourselves discussing directorial careers; the trademarks, the way we see their identities as filmmakers emerge and change. That’s fascinating, but equally interesting in their own way are those directors who give us only one film to look at. It might be a singular masterpiece, a cult item, or a contender for worst film ever made (Manos: The Hands of Fate). In the case of Joel Anderson, writer/director of Lake Mungo, what we have is not just a great film, but real unfulfilled promise of a career we’re yet to see.
Lake Mungo is a faux documentary telling the story of the Palmer family in the wake of the drowning death of 16 year old Alice (Talia Zucker). Her parents June and Russell (Rosie Traynor and David Pledger) and brother Matthew (Martin Sharpe) are obviously devastated, and all begin...

In horror films, cheap thrills are just as good as expensive ones. You don’t need a huge budget to scare your audience senseless. Take the new British chiller Host, described by Dread Central as “the scariest film of the past decade” – it all takes place on a laptop screen, and features a handful of actors and just a sprinkling of effects, but manages to be incredibly effective and unsettling. Here’s a selection of some of the best low budget horrors that have revolutionised the genre with their cost-cutting approach to fright, using resourcefulness, new technology and canny marketing to work around budgetary restrictions.
Night of the Living Dead (1969)
George A.Romero’s zombie shocker, featuring a group of people under siege from the undead in a farmhouse, cost a little over $100k and made over $18million at the box office. Superbly scripted and beautifully photographed, Romero garnered terrific...

Contains spoilers for the movie Lake Mungo.
“We were thinking it’d be nice if we could make a film that was kind of a curiosity, but if you saw it years from now you wouldn’t know anything about where it came from.”
This quote from a 2009 interview with Lake Mungo director Joel Anderson proved to be strangely prescient. Anderson was speaking ahead of the film’s screening at the Brisbane Film Festival – the movie had already premiered at the Sydney Film Festival, played South by Southwest in the US, and would go on to tour several more festivals before eventually finding its way onto DVD.
Anderson conducted a few interviews. He talked about how the film had in part come about because he wanted to make something cheap and manageable that could be shot in sections because he’d had trouble getting financing for a different, bigger, more...

After two seasons of charting infamous presidential sagas, the hit podcast “Slow Burn” is turning its attention to the world of music. Slate announced on Wednesday that Season 3 would be the latest piece of entertainment to focus on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of legendary artists Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.
Along with this reveal comes the introduction of a new host: incoming Slate staff writer Joel Anderson, who joins the site from ESPN, where his coverage centered on stories and issues within and connected to the world of college sports. Prior to ESPN, Anderson worked on both the national and investigative reporting teams at BuzzFeed, where he also charted the interaction between sports and culture at large.
“The first two seasons of Slow Burn went deep on big historical moments, and I’ve always wanted the opportunity to tell stories that way,” Anderson said of the new position.

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Breaking Dawn Part 2 poster: Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black Taylor Lautner returns as the shapeshifter / werewolf Jacob Black in one of three The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 character posters released earlier today. The other two Breaking Dawn Part 2 posters star red-eyed newborn vampire Kristen Stewart and golden-eyed centenarian vampire Robert Pattinson. Since vampires are immortal, all three posters feature the tagline "Forever." Now, I don’t think werewolves live forever. Jacob’s poster should read "For now," especially considering how his affections shift from Bella to another key character in Breaking Dawn Part 2. Directed by Kinsey / Dreamgirls‘ Bill Condon from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg (based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel), Breaking Dawn 2 is the final installment in the Twilight Saga film series. [Check out the Breaking Dawn 2 teaser poster.] In Breaking Dawn Part 2, Edward Cullen and his newborn-vampire wife Bella Swan-Cullen (Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart) must stand their ground against the ancient Volturi Clan (Michael Sheen,...

Robert Pattinson: Breaking Dawn 2 "reshoots" Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Michael Sheen are back in Vancouver for the Breaking Dawn – Part 2 "reshoots" — or rather, "pickup shots." A couple of weeks ago, Breaking Dawn director Bill Condon announced that he, Pattinson, Stewart, and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro would be heading back to Vancouver to work for a few days on a handful of shots. (Inevitably, there are already Twitter stories claiming that Pattinson’s bodyguard assaulted a couple of people upon Pattinson’s arrival.) Bill Condon’s companion, Jack Morrissey, later explained that Condon had not been responsible for the missing (or mismatched) footage, placing the blame on Breaking Dawn 2’s second-unit crew. "The coming additional photography is stuff that was conceived, developed, and was to be executed by the second unit during the period of principal photography," Morrissey told his podcast listeners. "For various reasons, it was not executed by the second unit … So,...

Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn 2 Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black — not shirtless, sorry — gives you The (Were)Wolf Look in this The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 photo released earlier today. Another just-released Breaking Dawn 2 image shows Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen and Bella Swan-Cullen wearing vampire contacts while looking into the distance. In Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight, Lautner had a minor supporting role as a teenager infatuated with Bella Swan (then still a human). He became a full-fledged leading man in Chris Weitz’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon and David Slade’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in which he and Pattinson’s vampire fight for Bella’s hand, body, love, and life. (It’s really all that.) In Breaking Dawn 2, things are different because Bella is no longer human. As a vampire, she’s out of Jacob’s reach; but then again, he seems to have lost interest.

Directed by Kinsey / Dreamgirls‘ Bill Condon from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg (based on Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel), Breaking Dawn 2 is the final installment of the Twilight movie series. Breaking Dawn 2 teaser poster The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2's teaser poster is the blue version of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1's teaser poster. It's easy to see why Summit Entertainment (now part of Lionsgate) opted to have the red version for Breaking Dawn 1 and the blue one for Breaking Dawn 2. Had it been the other way around, people might think they were looking at the teaser poster for Dan Bradley / Chris Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's Red Dawn, which also opens next November — but that features nasty North Korean soldiers instead of nasty European vampires. Those with a good eye will notice another difference in the Breaking Dawn 2 poster: But it's in Italian! Is that because of the Volturi? No, silly. For starters, the poster is in Spanish. Kristen Stewart as the vampire Bella Swan, Breaking Dawn Part 2 The previously announced The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 "reshoots" should actually be called "additional photography" or "pickup shots," according to Jack Morrissey, director Bill Condon's companion. (One site explains: "Condon is openly guy [sic].") In the Twilight Examiner, Amanda Bell has transcribed much of a Morrissey podcast on the upcoming Breaking Dawn 2 shoot. Among the key points discussed by Morrissey is that filming — involving Condon, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Michael Sheen (who plays one of the Volturi vampires) — should take place in Vancouver within the next two weeks and that this additional work should last about four days. Morrissey adds that the issue wasn't anything done — or not done — by Condon ("Nothing that he directed has been reshot or will be reshot…"), placing the blame squarely on the second unit crew.
