Netflix’s February rotation has much more to offer than just romance movies, though if you’re looking to extend the Valentine’s Day mood, several options like the Reese Witherspoon rom-com “Your Place Or Mine” from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna will warm your heart. “La La Land” could also satisfy the longing for a love story, but self-love is the most important, and “Eat, Pray, Love” can help you with that.
For those not feeling the love, “Lyle Lyle, Crocodile” promises fun for the whole family with the help of music from “La La Land” composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Shawn Mendes, who voices a CGI crocodile who only expresses himself through song, also contributed an original song to the film.

In the ever-growing collection of kids' movies based on beloved books, "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" is certainly one of the wackier offerings. The musical comedy adaptation of Bernard Waber's cute 1965 picture book features a lot of off-the-wall bits, from mustachioed Oscar-winner Javier Bardem doing a synchronized dance with the titular CGI croc, to Lyle giving acclaimed character actor Scoot McNairy a wedgie during a croc-on-human wrestling match. The movie also features Shawn Mendes as Lyle's singing voice, despite the fact that he sounds nothing like the growling croc sounds the creature makes when he's not on stage.
Here's the full synopsis for the movie:
When the Primm family moves to New York City, their young son Josh struggles to adapt to his new school and new friends. All of that changes when he discovers Lyle — a singing crocodile who loves baths, caviar and great music — living in the attic of his new home.

For “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile” star Winslow Fegley, the main reason folks should see the adaptation of the beloved children’s book is, put simply, it makes you happy.
“I guess I think that when you watch ‘Lyle,’ and when you see the movie, it’s so happy. When you see Lyle, it’s just makes you so happy,” he said. “And I feel like that’s a great reason for people to see it, like if you’re down or you’re not feeling great or you just want to feel happy for some reason, go watch this movie. It’s a really, really happy movie, and it makes you feel good watching the movie. Why wouldn’t you want that?”

Lyle the crocodile is not meant to be judged by his exterior, just like Bernard Waber’s childrens book from which he originated. If both were judged by their covers, readers and viewers would surely miss out.
“We made the movie because we loved the book,” said director Josh Gordon in an interview with TheWrap. “And the story behind the book, which to us was really about embracing joy and the power of love to save people and unlock potential.”
“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” tells (and sings) the story of a stage-shy crocodile who has the voice of an angel (Shawn Mendes). Lyle gets discovered by Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem) in a last-ditch effort trip to Eddie’s Exotic Animals, where he hopes to find his hail mary magical animal act to make money and repay his growing debt. Shawn Mendes voices the much-loved character of the reptile discovered in a pet shop, but it’s Javier Bardem’s flamboyant showman who steals the film
The star of this family adventure is meant to be an eight-foot CGI singing crocodile called Lyle (voiced by Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes). But then along comes Javier Bardem with a thinning comb-over and a moustache to rival Hercule Poirot; giving another lip-smackingly juicy performance, Bardem marches away with the film as flamboyant failed showman Hector P Valenti. Next to his dazzle, everything else about Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, adapted from Bernard Waber’s much-loved picture books, looks a bit average.
It begins when Hector finds adorable baby crocodile Lyle in a New York pet shop. It’s a wackily funny scene: Lyle in his cage singing along to the radio and shaking reptile butt. Spotting the showbiz potential of a musical croc, Hector...

Another weekend brings another serious dilemma for moviegoers: should Friday night be spent singing along with a talking crocodile or solving a mystery with three Hollywood superstars? Based on the box office numbers, the answer is ... neither! Why solve a crime or sing along when you can scream in terror thanks to Paramount's latest horror flick, "Smile."
In its second weekend at the box office, "Smile" is still going very strong. It's hard to believe that Parker Finn's directorial debut was once set to arrive exclusively to Paramount+, and execs have plenty to smile about after making the wise choice to premiere it in theaters instead. Per Variety, the film is now expected to beat out two other wide releases after earning 5.4 million on Friday from 3,659 theaters. This puts it ahead of both "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" and "Amsterdam," which earned 3.5 million and 2.6 million, respectively.

There’s one key question gripping the world this weekend: will the box office be smiling, or will it be Lyling?
Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had hopes to challenge for the top slot at the box office this weekend, though it seems that the family comedy won’t be able to outpace the second weekend of Paramount’s smash horror film “Smile.” Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios’ “Amsterdam” is bombing in its debut, aiming to finish in third.
“Lyle, Lyle” landed a 3.47 million opening day, screening in 4,350 locations. While that’s not exactly the most impressive opening day on paper, the majority of ticket sales for the musical will come with family audiences attending screenings on Saturday, Sunday and the Monday holiday of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which will keep a good fraction of kids out of school.

Bernard Waber’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” book series is now a major motion picture. The live action/CGI musical comedy stars a whole host of names, including one Canadian singer as the voice of a talented crocodile. The film will feature songs performed by star Shawn Mendes and written by the songwriting team behind “The Greatest Showman” — Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — with an ensemble cast that includes Javier Bardem and Constance Wu.

Although the concept behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile – that a singing and dancing crocodile is afflicted with crippling stage fright – falls a bit on the side of unbelievability (just a bit), the heart and soul of this film is so spot on and the performances of all involved prove just as engaging, that this ultimately plays as one of the more entertaining family films in recent memory.

Shawn Mendes and Javier Bardem Explain Why ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ Is More Than ‘Just a Kids’ Movie’
After voicing a CGI singing crocodile named Lyle, Shawn Mendes definitely has dreams to act in live-action form.
“It’s a terrifying place because it’s something I’ve never done truly before,” the Grammy-nominated artist told TheWrap in a recent interview. “But I’m super interested in it, and the more I am involved in the world of movies, the more I love it and the more I fall in love with the people and what they express so yeah, I’d love to [star in a live-action film].”
The “Wonder” singer voices the title character in “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” the adaptation of the children’s book series by Bernard Waber, lending his pipes to a cute crocodile who only sings and never talks. Mendes still relates to Lyle even though his main form of communication is through song rather than speech.

The story revolves around a family who find they have a crocodile living in the Victorian brownstone they just purchased. Starring Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, and Winslow Fegley, Lyle presents a new take on mixing animation with live action. And speaking of animated, you’ll also find Shawn Mendes as the musical voice behind Lyly the Crocodile. He doesn’t ever talk, but he can sure sing. And many of Mr. Mendes’s fanbase will likely be thrilled to hear his vocal talents on display. Co-directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, let’s see what all this croc action has in store.

It's a bit surprising that Bernard Waber's children's story "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" hasn't already been made into a theatrical kids' film. After all, ever since its publication back in 1965, countless children have learned about the power of friendship and good Samaritanism through this friendly crocodile. While there was a straight-to-tv special released in 1987, this timeless tale hadn't been explored or reinvented -- until now.
Directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon signed on to direct a new script based on the classic story in 2021, with a screenplay written by William Davies. While the filmmaking duo was mostly known for PG-13 and R-rated comedies, this new production proved that they had the right chops for family entertainment as well. /Film recently spoke with Speck and Gordon to discuss the movie's extensive prep process, as well as what it was like filming elaborate scenes without the show's main star on set.

The movie format where a character beloved by kids becomes a CGI creature, who is then plugged into a live-action universe, is one of the most casually technically astonishing of all popcorn genres — and, as often as not, one of the most stunted. It almost doesn’t matter if the hero is Garfield or Stuart Little, Alvin and the Chipmunks or Sonic the Hedgehog: The way this genre has descended from the noisy bravura of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” the actors tend to be reduced to one-note stooges who get stuck in too many green-screen reaction shots, whereas the critter at the center — the animated star — is, almost inevitably, a preening chatterbox who wears out his welcome by pelting the live-action players, and the audience, with too many bad punchlines.
But “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” is an exception. The title beastie at the heart of this musical fairy tale is a scaly,...

Whatever associations you may have with Lyle the crocodile, you probably didn’t imagine him crooning like Shawn Mendes. Based on Bernard Waber’s beloved children’s book originally published in 1965, the existence of a “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” movie proves nothing is sacred in Hollywood — especially nostalgic childhood storybooks.
If a CGI crocodile with the dulcet tenor of a pop idol seems at odds with Waber’s freehand illustrations, Javier Bardem is perfectly in step as eccentric showman Hector P. Valenti, star of stage and screen. Bardem’s lesser-seen playful side is on full display in “Lyle,” as he hoofs his way across New York City with madcap gusto. The minute he leaves the croc to fend for himself at the house on East 88th Street, his absence is sorely felt by all — not just lonely Lyle. Along with a few bouncy numbers from “The Greatest Showman” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

It was very New York of children’s author-illustrator Bernard Waber to turn an urban myth about misplaced reptiles into a beloved series of bedtime books about a city family adopting a friendly crocodile. And it’s very Hollywood to want to turn that beloved series of bedtime books into the unwieldy, CGI-splotched musical pablum that is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”
Even with a mustachioed Javier Bardem doing his bonkers best to evoke a Fellini-esque sideshow vibe as flamboyant entertainer Hector P. Valenti, the titular amphibian’s first owner, if you didn’t know that the frenetic and tinny “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had modestly charming literary origins, you’d swear the title of this corporatized kiddie-franchise fodder was a cheeky alternative acronym for LLC.
But hey, there has to be something at the other end of the quality spectrum from the joyful do-good magic of “Paddington,” and this overwrought, clunky creature-teacher-feature...

When you think of life-sized animated crocodiles (and who doesn’t, at least once in a while?), you don’t imagine that their singing voice is like Shawn Mendes’. No slight toward the 24-year-old pop star intended, but shouldn’t a crocodile sound a bit weightier? When the title character of the new live-action/CGI musical comedy Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile opens his very large mouth to sing in a high-pitched tenor voice, he sounds less like a giant-toothed predatory reptile than, I don’t know…a salamander, maybe.
Based on Bernard Waber’s best-selling book series, the film falls easily into the family movie sub-genre in which children, and often their parents and other adults, learn life lessons from a very large animal. When I was a kid, I was a sucker for Clifford the Big Red Dog (the subject of his own movie,...

It has been three months since Universal’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” became the most successful family film at the box office since theaters reopened. “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” won’t reach such lofty heights, but Sony/Columbia hopes that a lack of kid-friendly fare since midsummer will help turn it into a hit.
Currently, projections have “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” earning 11-14 million at the box office this weekend, which would be only slightly above the 10 million opening that “Peter Rabbit 2” earned in March 2021, during the earliest stages of the reopening process. “Lyle” has a reported production budget of 50 million, similar to fellow Sony release “The Woman King.” Like that historical epic, Sony has a co-financier for “Lyle,” with Tsg Entertainment splitting the production costs.
The ideal path for “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” is the one taken by the first “Peter Rabbit,” which also had a 50 million budget and opened to...

After a generally miserable September at the box office, October bursts in with the promise of at least two franchise films, although things will kick off mildly with two very different movies — one based on a children’s book and the other an original.
Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” is the first new PG-rated family movie in over two months. It’s hard to imagine that families who have been desperate to get the kids out of the house won’t take advantage of a new movie that is appropriate for them. Based on the 1965 children’s book by Bernard Waber, the live action hybrid movie is directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck (“Blades of Glory”) and stars Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Winslow Fegley, Brett Gelman and Scoot McNairy. More importantly, it features the singing voice of pop star Shawn Mendes as Lyle the Crocodile, performing songs that include...

Don’t underestimate the second weekend of Paramount’s horror movie Smile. The Parker Finn directed and written title, which has provided many in town that horror remains a bankable genre for the big screen after a 22.6M opening, has a shot of possibly upsetting Sony’s family movie Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and 20th Century Studios/New Regency/Disney’s upscale David O. Russell comedy Amsterdam for No. 1 with around an 11M+ take.

Smile had a very good Monday grossing 2.2M for a running 4-day total of 24.8M. By comparison, Blumhouse/Universal’s Black Phone rang up 3M in its first Monday back in June, so pretty good.
Sony is betting that Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile based on the classic kids 1965 Bernard Waber book comes in between 11M-12M at 4,300 locations. Rivals are forecasting much higher (15M-18M) as...

Almost 60 years after famous children’s author Bernard Waber published “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” the story is finally getting a live-action adaptation.
The 1965 picture book, a sequel to “The House on East 88th Street,” follows a saltwater crocodile navigating the streets of New York City. At the worldwide red carpet premiere on Sunday, the cast and crew discussed the process of threshing out a grander narrative based on the ten books in the “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” series.
“It’s like a 17-page book, so the room for growth and expansion is tenfold,” producer Kevin Vafi told Variety at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York. “It’s finding those homage points that you really want to do, like the note in the attic or meeting Lyle in the bathtub with Mrs. Primm — all these little callbacks to the book.”
The feature film was directed by comedy duo Will Speck and Josh Gordon,...

According to your calendar, Autumn officially began this week. I know, I know… Nature itself may disagree, like say in the form of triple-digit temperatures that make the average trip to the mailbox feel like a 5K through Hell itself. But we’ll do our best to put you in the mind of falling leaves, cool breezes, millions of pumpkin-spice-laced products… and new movies coming in Fall 2022.
Anyhow, we like to think Fall is a state of mind – and what better way to escape summer suffering than a trip to the movies, or an air-conditioned chill session on a comfy sofa? Okay, other methods might exist, but that’s for another site. We’re all about cinema here – so let’s get down to the only calendar that really matters: a list of upcoming movies we’d like to check out this season.

The complicated world of Hollywood is always a-changing, but if there's anything in this world that we can count on, it's talking animals befriending lonely children. In the vein of "Clifford The Big Red Dog," "Paddington" and maybe even "Detective Pikachu," comes "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile." Based on the best-selling book series by Bernard Waber, the film tells the story of a friendly crocodile who loves baths, singing, and his local community. Oh, and Lyle is voiced by pop-singing sensation Shawn Mendes.
Obviously, you have some questions: will there be an in-universe explanation for why Lyle the crocodile can sing? How many of Shawn Mendes' actual songs will be in the movie? Will it ever get less weird to hear the pop star's voice come out of a CGI crocodile? I can answer absolutely none of these questions but here's what we do know — "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" involves lots of hijinks...

What exactly is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile?” It’s a kids musical about a crocodile! He wears a scarf, and he can sing! And he’s voiced by pop artist Shawn Mendes.
On Wednesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” which is a live-action movie featuring Mendes as the singing, dancing, CGI reptile based on the children’s book series by Bernard Waber.
The film follows the Primm family, played by Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy and Winslow Fegley, as they move to New York City and find waiting for them in their bathroom tub Lyle… who we’ll remind you is a CGI singing crocodile. He also loves caviar. And the trailer shows the Primm family at one point making a painting of Lyle, as well as him sticking his head out a NYC cab like a puppy while wearing a Florida Gators jersey, causing countless unseen car wrecks.

Javier Bardem faced many challenges in bringing Desi Arnaz to life in Amazon’s Being the Ricardos, and he is being recognized for his efforts by his peers with a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama on Wednesday.
“I’m very proud and so happy that people are reacting this way to the performance,” Bardem tells Deadline shortly after the nominations were announced on Wednesday. “This was a challenging performance in so many ways, mainly because I was portraying an iconic person and that’s always very scary and very challenging.”
He continues, “I really tried to bring Desi’s energy to the role. He was so charismatic, so charming, and so openly attractive. This was not something I could turn on and off. He was like this constantly. He went out of his way to make everyone feel comfortable and to feel welcome.
