MLB Network will look back at some of the signature baseball calls from Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas in a new The Sounds of Baseball episode debuting Thursday, February 8th at 8 p.m. Et.
Cohosted by MLB Network’s Tom Verducci and Matt Vasgersian, the program will reflect on Costas’ run covering the game, from iconic postseason moments to memorable regular season games.
Awarded the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, Costas has been on the national baseball stage for more than 40 years. For the 2024 season, Costas is once again set to be the play-by-play voice for several MLB Network Showcase telecasts, a role he started when MLB Network launched 15 years ago in 2009.

Shakira has raised $660,000 to build schools in Columbia and Haiti. The "She Wolf" hitmaker agreed to appear in an advert for a Spanish cava drink in return for the company, Freixenet, making the donation to her charitable foundation Pies Descalzos.
"Education is a birthright and a quality education is the only tool that a child has to turn dreams into reality," she said. "Since I was a girl I have been aware of the tough reality faced by many children."
Under the terms of the agreement, Freixenet will also produce a documentary about Pies Descalzos and make the music video for Shakira's forthcoming single "Sale El Sol". This is not the only charitable action Shakira, who filmed the advert in Barcelona, Spain, last week, has done recently.
The Columbian-born beauty has also donated the harmonica she used in her music video "Gypsy" for an auction being held by her home...

A good friend that I met in college is an enthusiastic sports fan. That alone is of course not a notable statement; I made several friends in college, and I shared our great cultural obsession for the professional sports world with most of them. There is, however, something noteworthy about this guy. Given all the jawing about sports that he and I have done over the years, in my mind it has assumed the status of perhaps his most defining characteristic.
He was born in Cleveland.
I could simply leave it at that and end this column right there. In this context, that sentence is a punch line all by itself. You do not need to be a sports historian to reflect upon the last 45 years and realize that Cleveland sports success -- or at least the ultimate success as opposed to heartbreak on the occasional brink thereof -- is nonexistent.

I’m all for San Francisco celebrating its first World Series win, but I don’t entirely sympathize with this 7-year-old kid’s Lifetime Of Torture: Omg Finally!!!! No more torture!!!! I’ve been waiting my entire seven years of life to see the Giants win, about half of which I lacked the developmental capacity to grasp concepts like baseball, winning, or human speech! Unless… I mean, I assume he’s referring to the torture of Giants fans, not secretly telling the world that his parents have been torturing him but promised to stop when the Giants win the World Series like some twisted Angels In The Outfield remake? Cause if that’s the case, I retract my post. Thanks for blowing that Edgar Renteria homer out, flying Christopher Lloyd!

It has been a rough couple of days to be a sports fan in the Dallas area. The Cowboys' season has been derailed by erratic play and a devastating injury to star quarterback Tony Romo, and the NBA's Mavericks are in for a rough season (they got knocked off by the lowly Memphis Grizzlies over the weekend). (Rumor has it the city has a very successful NHL franchise, though that fact can neither be confirmed nor denied.) All the while, the Texas Rangers were getting battered in their first appearance in the World Series, their hot bats stifled by the San Francisco Giants' dominant pitching staff. On Monday night (November 1), the Giants finally put the Rangers out of their misery, as pitcher Tim Lincecum recorded his second victory of this Series to beat back the Rangers 3-1 and win the franchise's first championship since 1954 (and their first ever in the...
