The most entertaining films can also sympathetically highlight life’s most vital lessons. That’s certainly the case with the new relatable drama, ‘Two Ways Home,’ which masterfully showcases the importance of mental wellness and self-discovery. Actress Tanna Frederick shines as the vulnerable yet independent Kathy in the movie, during which the at-times struggling protagonist immediately captures […]

A movie can have the best intentions in the world and still not quite hit the mark. Such is the case with Ron Vignone’s heartland-set drama about a woman attempting to pick up the pieces of her life after serious missteps relating to her previously undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Although Two Ways Home features some powerful performances and affecting moments, it never feels wholly organic. You too often feel the film straining for the sort of significance that earned it an endorsement by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Train To Zakopané
What is it that makes people hate complete strangers due to characteristics beyond their control? What is it that makes us fall in love with people we hardly know? And what do we do when these feelings coincide? These are some of the questions addressed in Henry Jaglom's Train To Zakopané, based on a real incident in the life of his father. In this film, Tanna Frederick plays the role of Katia, a Polish girl with a deep hatred of Jewish people who unwittingly falls for a Jewish man. When we connect to talk about the role, I remind her that we spoke some five years ago about Ovation and her theatre projects at the time. She laughs.
“Was that really five years ago?”
Time flies, she says, and indeed she's been extremely busy in the year since, on both stage and screen - including starring in the theatrical version.

Jane Spencer
Just over three years ago, I interviewed Jane Spencer about her film The Ninth Cloud. That film will enjoy a special screening in London, where it's set, on the12th of February, and Jane is working on a new film, South Of Hope Street. She took time out from her busy schedule to catch up and discuss her current projects.
"It's a science fiction piece. It also has a female lead. I'd compare it to a film like Alphaville," she says of South Of Hope Street. "Michael [Madsen] has a cameo role in it as a kind of hippy character, and that's funny for him. Also we have Hilmir Snær Guðnason, who was in a film called 101 Rejkjavik a while back, and he's brilliant. And an Arab actor named Zafer El-Abedin who plays an immigrant in the film, he's wonderful also. Tanna Frederick is my lead actress. She's...

From Goodfellas to The Sopranos, Michael Imperioli often plays characters associated with the mob and murder. However, he takes on an entirely different subject in his new film The M Word: menopause.
Imperioli plays Charlie Moon, a TV exec brought in to change a struggling local station when an actress named Moxie starts to film a documentary about the taboo subject she notices is happening around her but no one seems to talk about. The subject didn’t matter to Imperioli, who signed on to the movie without a script and little information just to have the opportunity to...

A pluralistic personal account of menopause seems like a fine idea for a movie, but was Henry Jaglom the right person to make it?
In The M Word, Jaglom smartly sees a parallel between midlife hormone upheaval and sudden workplace superfluousness, but his unstructured-gabfest approach makes rather a mess of it.
Somewhere in L.A., a scrappy little TV station is losing money and about to get downsized into oblivion. Maybe there's still hope for Moxie, a charismatic kids' show actress (Tanna Frederick) who beguiles the newly arrived emissary (Michael Imperioli) from the station's corporate parent. To her he offers not just the chance to trade up from a schlemiel boyfriend (Corey Feldman) but also an official green light on a pet-project menopause documentary. Then ...

Actress, marathon runner, charity organiser and self-confessed workaholic, Tanna Frederick is an extraordinarily accomplished woman who still seems slightly bashful when talking about it. A co-founder of the Iowa Independent Film Festival, she often travels on the festival circuit, where she’s picked up a couple of Best Actress awards, and divides the rest of her working life between independent films and the stage. We catch up just after she’s wrapped on Ovation, a sequel to 2010 indie hit Queen Of The Lot. She’s still buzzing about the shoot, which re-united her with star James Denton and assorted friends.
“Tomorrow I go back on the boards,” she tells me, having barely had a day to recover. “We’ve been running a play called Rainmaker. It opened to great reviews. It’s fantastic doing theatre in Los Angeles again.”
The play has been running since January, but Tanna recently had two weekends off.

Truly connecting to the inner emotions, fears and desires of someone trying to realize their goals and aspirations in life is one of the most important aspects of an actor’s job, on stage and in films. Veteran theater and film actress Tanna Frederick has a natural ability to connect with the darkest motivations of any character she takes on. She’s currently showing that ability as the main character, Lizzie Curry, in the play ‘The Rainmaker,’ which is currently playing at the Edgemar Theater in Santa Monica. While the production is based on N. Richard Nash’s 1954 play, ‘The Rainmaker,’ which was later adapted into a film starring Burt Lancaster and [ Read More ]

For a flyover state, the film industry in Iowa has been awfully rocky in the last few years. One expects entertainment scandal in Hollywood but not necessarily in the Midwest. But that's exactly what happened when the Hawkeye State's aggressive film credit program was suspended in 2009, after an internal audit discovered discrepancies, leaving the state's actors and filmmakers vulnerable. Enter Iowan Tanna Frederick.Frederick, who has worked steadily as an actor in Los Angeles, began the Iowa Independent Film Festival with Richard Schinnow in 2007 as a way of promoting the same encouragement that she received. "The most exciting aspect for me has been seeing the local talent that has come out and has decided 'I'm gonna pick up a camera,' " Frederick said. "And then watching them go on to win awards nationally, and to have a voice and to not go for the Hollywood, Syd Field obvious."That same.

(Tanna Frederick in Henry Jaglom's "Just 45 Minutes From Broadway," above, with David Garver.)
By Terry Keefe
The manner in which Iowa native Tanna Frederick received her break as an actress has sort of become a independent filmmaking legend, but it bears repeating, as a lesson in the type of chutzpah required to get anywhere in the film business. After a few years of struggling in the audition trenches of Hollywood, Frederick was told by a fellow actor that filmmaker Henry Jaglom often responded to fan letters. Frederick proceeded to write a copious letter to Jaglom, praising the merits of his 1997 film Deja Vu…which she had never actually seen. Nonetheless, a correspondence between Frederick and Jaglom began, and eventually, Jaglom gave the actress permission to do a stage production of his 1971 film debut, A Safe Place, the cinematic version of which starred Jack Nicholson, Orson Welles, and Tuesday Weld.

Henry Jaglom, the iconic writer/director whose films include: Eating, Someone To Love, New Years Day, Hollywood Dreams, and most recently Irene in Time, was kind enough to sit down with me and talk about his life, his art and his new play Just 45 Minutes From Broadway. Joining us was his muse, and very talented actress, Tanna Frederick who stars in Irene in Time, Hollywood Dreams and currently in Henry's new play. I can't think of anyone who makes films like Henry does. He is an artist in the true sense of the word. His lead characters are often women, and I'm not talking Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), but real women who share their deepest thoughts and feelings. Henry told me he gets his understanding of women from his mother. She allowed him to explore...

The description of Henry Jaglom's Irene in Time makes the film sound stereotypical at best.
A puzzle about love and time, a mystery in which clues are found and secrets are revealed, Irene in Time is a look at the complex relationships between fathers and daughters and the consequences — years later — on the grown women's relationships to the men in their lives. Not surprisingly, Irene, played by Tanna Frederick, has issues because her dad sailed off into the sunset (yes, really) when she was little. Her love life is in shambles. She commiserates with her group of friends who all likely have their own daddy issues. And, of course, there's a lesbian: Irene's best friend Jo Jo, played by Kelly DeSarla, who had a small role in Wedding Crashers.
We can probably bet Jo Jo will have plenty of cliche things to say about men and why Irene has...

“There’s freedom within limits.” That’s how Tanna Frederick describes working with independent film guru Henry Jaglom on the new film Irene in Time, a story of a woman trying to come to grips with the problematic relationship with her father. Jaglom, who uses very quick, improvisational techniques in his films, offered Frederick the title role after working with her several times before in both film and theater. “With Henry’s films, you film them so quickly,” Frederick says of Jaglom’s maverick style. “There’s never really any breathing room, so you’re just living this life of this person for three weeks straight, and you’re trying to slam out the scenes and get it done.” This style allowed Frederick to become more vulnerable as a character in the film, in which her character plays a neurotic, chronic dater in the L.A. scene. “It’s a story about fathers and daughters and how...

This week in theaters sees more history coming to life while the oceans around us die. Woody Allen fans can start counting backwards from 364 again, while Sandra Bullock makes Ryan Reynolds suffer, which, after "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," has got to be a cause worth supporting.

Thanks to the mainstream explosion of snarky adult-oriented animation, grown-ups no longer need to dream up creative excuses to spend all day in front of cartoons, which is nice.
