It’s been a long time coming, but a remake of the 1994 film The Crow (which was based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr) will finally be making its way out into the world on August 23rd, which is when Lionsgate will be giving the film a theatrical release. With that release date swiftly approaching, we figured we should gather together all the information we have on this movie… and here it is, Everything We Know About The Crow Remake:
Development Hell
When the original The Crow was released, it was successful enough to spawn a franchise, with three sequels following over the next eleven years. We got The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005, with several other potential sequels (including one that would have been written and directed by Rob Zombie) being developed and scrapped along the way.

When Tron first appeared in 1982, it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but that did not stop Disney from producing yet another sequel. Tron: Ares is set to be the next installment in the series and will serve as a standalone sequel to the two previous movies. Production began in January 2024 and Disney has now confirmed the film’s official theatrical release date, which is going to happen on October 10, 2025!
Plans for a sequel started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped along the way and the sequel seemed to be stuck in developmental hell. In 2022, it was confirmed that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, but was initially postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is finally heading into production. Tuesday would have been the first day of production on the sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares,” but the film, like so much else in Hollywood, is now on hold indefinitely, said director Joachim Rønning lamented the “extremely frustrating” situation” on Tuesday.
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares. Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone,” Rønning wrote on Instagram.
He continued, “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.

Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning took to Instagram to give an update on the long-awaited sequel and express his frustration with the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has delayed the start of the Disney film.
The Norwegian director (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) revealed the production was supposed to begin filming this week and instead had to lay off 150 crew members. Rønning teased the film would have a storyline centered around AI (as have the two previous films, to varying extent). While supporting the goals of the work stoppage, he also urged both sides of the contract dispute to resolve their differences.

Sarah Desjardins is uploading to the grid. The Yellowjackets actor is the latest addition to Tron: Ares, the upcoming third installment of the classic Disney film series.
Desjardins joins a cast that includes Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters and Jodie Turner-Smith. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil filmmaker Joachim Ronning is directing Ares, which follows 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy.
While the first Tron film centered on a video game designer (Jeff Bridges) entering his own creation, and the follow-up focused on his son (Garrett Hedlund) following in his footsteps, sources previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the new film will spend more time in the real world. The script from Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne is said to center on a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is really picking up steam. Six years have gone by since it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, but things really started to come together around Leto earlier this year. First, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning signed on to direct the film. A couple months ago, we heard a rumor that Cillian Murphy might be reprising his Tron: Legacy role to be the villain in this film. Earlier this week, Evan Peters of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story joined Leto in the cast. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Greta Lee (Past Lives) will be playing “a leading role” in the film, while Variety reports that Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) has also been cast.

“Tron: Ares,” the third “Tron” movie that will star Jared Leto, has added some serious indie cred.
Greta Lee, the breakout of A24’s critical darling “Past Lives,” and “Queen & Slim” and “After Yang” actress Jodie Turner-Smith, have both joined the cast of the sci-fi film at Disney, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Plot details haven’t been unveiled, either, but THR is reporting that the film follows Leto as Ares, the manifestation of an all-powerful, sentient computer program, who makes his way into the real world.

Evan Peters, the actor best known for his portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, has landed his next role opposite Jared Leto in Disney’s long-in-the-works Tron 3.
Helmed by veteran Disney director Joachim Rønning, the movie is titled Tron: Ares. Its script, written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, is said to focus on “the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peters’ role in the film is currently unknown, though two of the main characters in the script are “a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world.” Leto is set to play Ares, the manifestation of the program.
Production on Tron: Ares is set to begin in Vancouver this August. It follows 2011’s Tron: Legacy, itself a long-gestating sequel to the original 1982 special effects pioneer Tron.

Six years have gone by since it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares – and now it looks like it’s finally making its way into production! Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning signed on to direct the film at the start of the year. A couple months ago, we heard a rumor that Cillian Murphy might be reprising his Tron: Legacy role to be the villain in this film. Murphy’s involvement still hasn’t been confirmed, but now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Leto is being joined in the cast by Evan Peters of WandaVision and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”

Evan Peters, star of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Mare of Easttown,” is joining Jared Leto in “Tron: Ares,” the third film in Disney’s extremely long-lived cyberspace franchise.
Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) will direct the film from a script by Jesse Wigutow. Production is set for August (an actors strike notwithstanding).
Along with his frequent appearances on FX’s “American Horror Story” anthology series, Peters played Peter Maximoff in several “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox (before the studio was acquired by Disney), starting with 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

Welcome to the Grid, Evan Peters.
The actor, who generated acclaim for his portrayal of the title character in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has closed a deal to star opposite Jared Leto in Tron: Ares, the third installment of Disney’s technology-pushing movie series.
Joachim Ronning is directing the feature that is due to begin shooting August in Vancouver. Getting filming off the ground would be a coup for the studio, which has been trying to make a Tron 3 for over a decade and turn Tron into a bona fide brand and franchise.
Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not considered a box office success but did earn two Oscar nominations. Ironically, neither was for visual effects,...

Though there was some chatter in the wake of Tron: Legacy's release in 2010 about a potential sequel, the idea seemed to vanish into development limbo until around 2017, when it emerged that Jared Leto was in talks to star. Fast-forward to today, and Deadline reports that Joachim Rønning is in talks to direct what is currently known as Tron: Ares.
Despite talk of a reboot in the mix there, it seems that Tron: Ares will indeed be a direct sequel to Legacy, written by Jesse Wigutow. No plot details have been released, but it appears that Leto is playing Ares, a character who was in earlier drafts of the script.
“I am so very excited and proud to confirm that Yes – I will be starring in Tron,” Leto wrote in 2020. “We will work as hard as we possibly can to create something that I hope you all will love. We...

Disney’s third “Tron” movie has just found its chief programmer, as TheWrap has confirmed that “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” filmmaker Joachim Rønning has joined the project.
The director has a longstanding history with the studio, having already helmed “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and the upcoming “Young Woman and the Sea,” starring Daisy Ridley.
Filming for the third “Tron” is set to begin this summer. Jared Leto was attached to play the title character in 2020 and remains so, as does writer Jesse Wigutow. The story for “Tron: Ares” is set after the events of 2010’s “Tron: Legacy.” (Leto was also set to co-produce.) Garth Davis, director of “Lion” and “Mary Magdalene,” was previously attached to direct.

Jared Leto is getting on the Grid.
The Academy Award winner has officially been cast in upcoming “Tron” franchise installment, “Tron: Ares.” Joachim Rønning of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” fame is currently in negotiations to direct, IndieWire can confirm.
Deadline first reported that “Tron: Ares” will serve as a direct follow-up to “Tron: Legacy,” which marked Jeff Bridges reprising his role from the original 1982 sci-fi film. Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde also starred in the Joseph Kosinski-helmed 2010 film. A slated follow-up was scrapped in 2015 that was reportedly set to have Kosinski, Hedlund, and Wilde returning. Leto was rumored to be joining the cast at the time.
“Tron: Ares” is written by Jesse Wigutow and production is set to start in August 2023. “Tron” follows an arcade lover who is trapped in a computer program called the Grid where he is forced to participate in gladiator games to survive.

After years of stops, starts, false alarms, and scrapped iterations, "Tron 3" is finally moving forward at Disney with a new creative team attached. Jared Leto, who has been attached to the project for several years now, has continued to champion it behind the scenes. Apparently, that worked as the Oscar-winner is indeed going to star in the film, with a director and script both in place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joachim Rønning is set to direct the film, which is going under the title of "Tron: Ares." It will not, seemingly, be a reboot of the franchise and will, per the report, pick up where "Tron: Legacy" left off more than a decade ago. Jesse Wigutow ("It Runs in the Family") penned the version of the screenplay that is actually, it would seem, going to go before cameras. No word yet on just how soon filming could begin, nor...

Disney is going back to the grid.
After multiple false starts, the studio is back on track for a third “Tron” movie, with Jared Leto attached to star and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” director Joachim Rønning in talks to helm. Nominally titled “Tron: Ares,” the film would follow the groundbreaking 1982 film “Tron” starring Jeff Bridges, and the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy,” which starred Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and was the feature directing debut of “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
Leto first plugged into a third “Tron” movie in 2017 as the star and a producer, and he’s remained attached ever since. Garth Davis (“Lion”) signed on to helm the movie in 2020, but he ultimately parted ways with the project. Jesse Wigutow remains the film’s screenwriter, and Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and Emma Ludbrook are also producing.

It’s been well over a decade since Tron: Legacy‘s release, but the franchise’s next installment may finally be inching closer. Deadline has reported that Disney is in early negotiations with Joachim Rønning to helm Tron: Ares, the long-in-development sequel starring Jared Leto.
It’s still early days, but Deadline’s report states that the Tron sequel is assembling its crew and is considering an August start date in Vancouver. The script for Tron: Ares has been penned by Jesse Wigutow, and if Joachim Rønning signs on, it will be his fourth collaboration with the House of Mouse after Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the upcoming Young Woman and the Sea starring Daisy Ridley.

So far, Jared Leto and big budget blockbusters haven’t been a great mix. Suicide Squad was a huge hit financially, but his Joker wasn’t particularly well received, something that Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be looking to remedy. He also had a substantial role in Oliver Stone’s box office disaster Alexander and played the villain in critically acclaimed but commercially disappointing Blade Runner 2049, while the jury is still very much out on the Spumc’s Morbius.

Jared Leto already has major movie franchises on his plate, but the pile just recently grew with the confirmation of his starring role for the back-on-track Tron 3. While the star’s excitement over that film’s latest development—the hiring of director Garth Davis—was palpable, it seems that said excitement might have led to a slip of Disney state secrets, specifically the film’s official title.
Tron: Ares is the title that Leto cited, apparently mistakenly, in a recent tweet that—conspicuously enough—was subsequently deleted. Indeed, in the original version of the now-reposted and edited tweet, Leto similarly confirmed his starring role, but went so far as to divulge the full title of the film for which he has been cast. The tweet in question—seemingly designed as an impromptu title reveal—was a reply to another in which the star conveys gratitude for the role,...

‘Tron: Legacy.’
Garth Davis is attached to direct a reboot of Disney’s Tron franchise, starring Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto.
The Top of the Lake, Lion and Mary Magdalene director aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs at the studio, according to Deadline.
Although the project is still in development, Deadline said Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.
Meanwhile Davis and his head of development Samantha Lang are continuing to develop feature film and TV projects for I Am That, a production co-venture with Iain Canning and Emile Sherman’s See-Saw Films.
“We are delighted about this new role for Garth and will continue to work closely with him,” Lang tells If.
The franchise kicked off in 1982 with Tron, a sci-fi action-adventure set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner and directed by Steven Lisberger.
