In the late 90s/early 2000′s there was a distinct new trend in the horror genre: that of “urban horror”. A genre that brought urban black cinema, and all-black casts, together with the horror genre in much the same way as it did in the 70s during the blaxploitation era. Whilst films like Bones and Vampire in Brooklyn (despite being something of a critical failure) had iconic stars such as Snoop Dogg and Eddie Murphy respectively, it was smaller movies such as Rusty Cundieff’s Tales From the Hood that had all the ideas (if you haven’t seen Tales… you should really track it down).

With Isle of Dogs’ director Tammi Sutton’s latest feature Ripped-Off gearing up for principal photography in Los Angeles, CA this spring, we caught up with the filmmaker to discuss what happens when car thieves steal the wrong vehicle (this being a Sutton film, all sorts of stylized hell will break loose, more than likely). Read on.
Currently casting, Ripped-Off was written by Jeff Sisson, and will be produced by Caprice Conley, with cinematography by Jonas Navickas. The film’s tagline is as follows; “They stole the wrong car... Now heads are gonna’ roll."
“The inception of Ripped-Off honestly started when I was winding down filming my last two features in Europe and England,” stated Sutton (her last feature currently in release, the gritty Andrew Howard and Barbara Nedeljakova-starring crime thriller Isle of Dogs, bowed to DVD via Green Apples on January 28, 2014.)

With director Tammi Sutton’s much-buzzed about and award-winning feature Isle of Dogs premiering in Los Angeles this coming Saturday night at the New Beverly Cinema (7165 West Beverly Blvd.), we caught up with the filmmaker to discuss her thoughts on the premiere and feature, as well as those on Whispers, her latest project, and more.
“I'm excited to announce my feature film Isle of Dogs is playing at The New Beverly,” Sutton, who also executive produced from a script by Sean Hogan, told us of the L.A. bow of her bloody, British crime-thriller. Isle of Dog stars Andrew Howard (I Spit On Your Grave) as a violent gangster who finds himself embroiled in a love triangle with his Russian trophy-wife Nadia (Hostel actress Barbara Nedeljakova), and a small-time hood (Edward Hogg).
“As a filmmaker, on a very personal level, I had always dreamed of filming something in England,” Sutton told us.

Coma To be honest, I'm surprised we don't get more medical themed horror thrillers each year as this is a genre ripe for the picking. Think about, people have an inherent fear of hospitals, going into surgery, of receiving treatment. Haven't you ever known someone who wouldn't go get treatment at one point or another simply because they don't like hospitals. Now you know what I am talking about! The House on Haunted Hill remake combined a haunted house story with the dark chapter of America's past in regards to medical treatment and created a bone chilling film. Or we have the more recent Sutures from director Tammi Sutton which exploited people's fears of medical treatment by showcasing an array of grisly, but highly effective scenarios involving medical experimentation. Or another favorite of mine, The Harvest, which uses the good old kidney heist urban legend as the film's central film premise.

Trent Haaga's resume as a filmmaker includes acting (lot's of it), writing, producing, directing and few other odd jobs along his journey. Gigs include the Killjoy movies from Full Moon in which he plays the evil demon clown Killjoy, he has been invloved in a Toxic Avenger movie from Troma and he has written what has become a cult classic in its very short life span, I'm talking about Dead Girl which gave Jenny Spain her break out role and if you haven't seen this cool movie I recommend you do so. I got with Trent about his current projects and the rumors going around about a sequel to Dead Girl, oh it's real all right! Check out my latest Versus to learn more about filmmaker Trent Haaga.
Brian S- Hey Trent, first off congratulations on the popularity that Dead Girl has gotten and it just keeps on making its way to cult status.

Director Tammi Sutton's Eye Candy - 2010 - Year of the Film Geek! I like the way she says that!
2010 was truly an incredible year for film geek! There were countless fantastic films this year, and a great many diverse films, something in every flavour, and something for everyone of all ages. I cannot remember a better year for such rich offerings for filmgoers. I feel privileged to have gotten to see so many great films, it started with late night whispers at Cannes, murderous feats to get to Telluride through Durango, to rushing an early, juvenile, cut of my own film "Isle of Dogs" at Fright Fest, and down to the wire fighting with a stranger's child in Los Angeles over the last DVD copy of 'Toy Story 3' hours ago.

Like, what's the deal, Neil?
Neil isn't a real person.
In the past 5 years I've seen women horror, sci-fi, and fantasy directors representing at least one third of all genre film festival screenings in the United States and in Europe. This year, not so. While there are a few features making the rounds, the same ones appear in all the fests and often they're the Only film directed by a woman in the entire lineup.
Check it out:
Horror/drama After.life, directed Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, already made a theatrical release in the USA and was recently screened in the United Kingdom at London Frightfest alongside only one other horror film by a woman (Hélène Cattet co-directed the awful giallo Amer with Bruno Forzani) and the violent action flick Isle of Dogs by Tammi Sutton and is now in the official lineup for Sitges, Spain. Dread Central was on the scene for the five days of the fest, braving malnutrition, sleep deprivation and impaired liver function to bring you all the pics, news and reviews we know you crave!
Of course, if you’re a regular follower of the site, you’ll already be aware that the opening film was the world premiere of Adam Green’s excellent Hatchet II (review here). Along with him, Green brought stars Tony Todd, Danielle Harris and Kane Hodder to give the audience a well received Q&A session after the screening as well as a poster signing.

Tammi Sutton is one of the busiest people working in horror today. Having covered what seems like every aspect of the filmmaking process from being a director, producer, production designer, art designer, costume designer, actress, heck she is even editing one of her upcoming films! Is there anything that this bright up and comer can't tackle?!? Judging by her resume, no! I recently had the chance to ask her a few questions about her latest genre film, Sutures. It is refreshing to have another female voice directing in the horror genre. What made you want to start making horror films?
I've loved watching horror films all my life. I watched a lot of Universal, Hammer and Amicus Horror films growing up and of course all the drive-in, exploitation stuff of the seventies as I got older, they've all had a lasting impression. Movies were where most kids connected to the...

Sutures DVD ArtworkDirector: Tammi Sutton.
Writers: Brian Moon, Carlos Laucha, and Jacqueline A. Kelly.
Sutures is a film produced by Sutures LLC and distributed on DVD July 20th by one of the largest independent film supporters, Mti Home Video. Sutures LLC was created exclusively for this film and this company was likely built as a stopping gap in case the film failed financially. This is an educated guess. However, filmmaker Tammi Sutton and her crew have displayed a knack for incorporating childhood trauma in to a story involving unanesthetized organ harvesting. The believability of the premise takes awhile to get used to, but once imagination overcomes this obstacle, Sutures turns out to be an enjoyable yet tragic tale of madness and unresolved Oedipal issues.
The film begins as many horror films do with several good looking twenty-somethings venturing out in to the wilderness for a well deserved rest. These med'...

6.30pm Hatchet II (World Premiere)
FrightFest continues its strong relationship with Adam Green by hosting the world premiere of the sequel to his 2006 slasher sensation. Picking up right where the splatter-tastic original ended, Marybeth escapes the clutches of the deformed, swamp-dwelling iconic killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family's connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher. Delivering unapologetically unrestrained gushers of gore,...

Mti Video will be releasing Tammi Sutton's (Hell Asylum) Sutures on DVD July 20th and a trailer for the feature is here. The story follows a group of "longtime friends" (IMDb) to a fatal convergence with a "mercenary surgeon," (IMDb) who needs body parts for unknown experiments. Steel yourself and then step inside Sutures with this clip past the break.
The synopsis for Sutures here:
"A group of longtime friends converge on a fatal course with destiny when they cross paths with Alexander Tatum, a mercenary surgeon. He is a hunter with the keen skill of one who has also been hunted. Prey turned predator. The victims quickly realize that Alexander is just the beginning of their problems, as they find themselves enmeshed in a fight for survival against a sociopath business man and his demonic staff, who will stop at nothing to prevail in the sale of Black...

Production Weekly beat us to the breaking news that indie horror director Tammi Sutton's next project will be a feminist biker revenge movie called Graveland. She had us at 'feminist biker revenge movie'. Vinnie Jones and Danny Trejo, as well as Barbara Nedeljakova, are attached.
In this apocalyptic world, men are the submissive ones. Sutton describes her film as "an homage to Peckinpah and Leone", and to take the misogyny out of the Spaghetti Western. Lots of action-bike-riding will happen, and hopefully lots of shirtless hot men. More news as it comes!

With motorcycles shining like national guitars, Vinnie Jones and Danny Trejo are bouncing into "outlaw biker indie" Graveland, according to Production Weekly. The project's sketchy website also lists Hostel star Barbara Nedeljakova as attached. We don't yet know who they'll be playing, but the film, directed by Suture's Tammi Sutton, is a gynocentric desert revenge picture, set in a world where men are submissive. Vague echoes of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! there. And indeed of the Two Ronnies' The Worm That Turned. The sight of Trejo and Jones in frocks would be worth the ticket price alone.Unlikely though, since Sutton's film is "an homage to Peckinpah and Leone", and her agenda is apparently to reclaim the Spaghetti Western while stripping it of its misogyny (thanks to the Examiner for that info). She's also keen to make the biking credible: all the hogs are custom made, and actors are being...

Tammi Sutton's "outlaw biker indie" Welcome to Graveland has been chugging along since the end of last year and has just added another couple of tough guys to its cast. Hyper-English Guy Ritchie go-to guy Vinnie Jones will be starring alongside Machete himself, Danny Trejo. The news comes via the Production Weekly Twitter account so details on their roles in the film is very limited, but knowing those two will be in it should be enough to pique your interest pretty hard. The film is about a female biker on a quest for vengeance in a world where roles are reversed--men are the weaker companions and the "objects of desire and conquest", according to the Examiner. The term "submissive" is used in describing these companions, but that word doesn't describe Trejo and Jones even a little bit, so I am more convinced they'll play some sort of rough necks...
