In the history of movie sequels, few second installments have pulled off a total tonal shift better than Evil Dead II, and none were nearly as groovy.

Even before Sam Raimi’s self-serious indie horror classic Evil Dead became one of 1981’s biggest sleeper hits, the emerging screenwriter and director already knew he wanted to turn the film into a full-on franchise. At the urging of his publicist Irvin Shapiro, Raimi started planning the plot lines for future Evil Dead films while he was still making the first installment on a shoestring budget, but it would take Raimi and his team all the way until 1985 to finally secure the funding for what would become Evil Dead II, by which time Raimi, his co-writer Scott Spiegel and his star/co-producer Bruce Campbell already had a pretty good idea for how to continue the story of Michigan State’s most traumatized student Ash Williams.

Academy Award nominee and lifelong horror fan Paul Giamatti is set to star in a key role for new “Hostel” TV series with Eli Roth returning, THR reports today.

It’s not just Roth returning, but franchise producers Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss as well.

No plot details as of yet as the series is still in development. But it’s described as a “modern adaptation” and an “elevated thriller” that’s also a “reinvention” of the horror franchise that launched in 2006 and spawned two sequels.

Roth and Briggs will write the script, with the former set to direct. Roth, Briggs and Fleiss will all executive produce the series.

Giamatti will star in a key role, though character details are under wraps.

Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.

Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Eli Roth made his return to rated “R” horror with the slasher movie Thanksgiving last month, and we learned last week that Roth will return to direct Thanksgiving 2 in 2025.

This year’s holiday slasher is of course a feature length expansion of Roth’s popular faux trailer from Grindhouse (2007), and it seems it’s reignited his passion for his past work.

Eli Roth just kicked off a new horror franchise with his slasher movie Thanksgiving (read our review Here), as it was recently announced that Thanksgiving 2 is on track for a 2025 release. But while Roth is currently focused on holiday slashing, two franchises he previously created – the Hostel and Cabin Fever franchises – came up while he was sitting down for an interview with CinePOP. And during this interview, he said he hopes to revisit and revive those franchises someday!

Roth told CinePOP, “Hostel, there’s a lot more to do. I’d love to go back to Hostel at some point. And Cabin Fever as well. They’re a part of me, like my children, and I feel like I’ve been ignoring them for too long. I’d love to go back to them, in some way. I have ideas.“

You might be familiar with the company Vice Press, which specializes in “creating officially licensed, limited edition fine art movie posters featuring art produced exclusively for them by artists from across the world.” Well, on November 16th they’ll be launching a new line called Vice Press Home Video, which they’ll be using to give classic films revival VHS releases in the UK – and the first movie to get the VHS treatment from Vice Press Home Video is the 1987 Sam Raimi classic Evil Dead II (watch it Here)!

Earlier this week, we were devastated to hear that Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, had passed away at the age of 70, following a six year private battle with cancer. Among the many people who took to social media to mourn the loss of Reubens was special makeup effects artist Mark Shostrom, whose long list of credits includes The Slumber Party Massacre, The Beastmaster, The Mutilator, From Beyond, Witchboard, Prince of Darkness, Poltergeist III, Phantasm II and III, the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Evil Dead II. And while paying tribute to Reubens, Shostrom revealed that an iconic effect from Evil Dead II drew inspiration from an iconic effect in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure!

Shostrom said, “Paul Reubens provided huge inspiration for my work on Evil Dead II. I had been watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS on repeat while sculpting.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

The "Evil Dead" trilogy is not particularly renowned for its strict continuity. Quite the contrary, actually — the three films, "The Evil Dead," "Evil Dead II," and "Army of Darkness," employ some notably loose connective tissue between each movie.

Some of this is due to the shifting creative approach, as the first film's ultimate experience in grueling terror morphs into the sequel's outrageous slapstick (or perhaps "splatstick" is a better term) before shifting completely into the period adventure comedy of "Army of Darkness." The continuity confusion also infamously stems from the films' production issues, with access to rights for recap footage requiring director Sam Raimi and company to reshoot and reconceive the backstory for each prior entry. There's also the fact that the "rules" Raimi establishes for the Deadites in the first "Evil Dead" are purposely vague, with victims being possessed and un-possessed seemingly at the drop of a hat, for instance.

The horror genre always moves in cycles, with every new trend lasting for a few years before the next big hit comes along and everyone else rushes to capitalize. We’ve seen it with the raft of slashers that followed in the wake of John Carpenter’s original Halloween, Scream led to a slew of self-aware postmodern horrors, and The Blair Witch Project kicked off the found footage phenomenon that saw anyone with a camera throw their hat into the ring, but most grisly of all was Eli Roth’s Hostel, the first movie to ever be slapped with the ‘torture porn’ descriptor.

After breaking out with his feature debut Cabin Fever, Hostel established Roth as one of the genre’s newest and fastest rising stars, and even despite the stomach-churning violence, it received decent reviews from critics and still holds a Fresh 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes. More importantly, it...

It is hard not to be entertained by QT8: The First Eight, a feature-length documentary chronicling the first eight films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, featuring interviews with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Jamie Foxx, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The clips are a reminder of the still-startling brilliance of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, the slow-burn sensuality of Jackie Brown, and the two-part powerhouse that is Kill Bill. Significant time is spent on Inglorious Bastards and Django Unchained, and two films most in need of reappraisal—Death Proof and The Hateful Eight—are given proper respect.

As the title lays out, do not, however, expect insight into Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as the ninth film from Tarantino is barely mentioned. Considering that Hollywood might be the finest film of his career, one imagines a supplement to the documentary might already be around the corner.

You know you’ve made it as a filmmaker when they’re making films about you. After a big year bolstered by the release of his already-beloved awards contender “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino has now become the subject of yet another film. Wood Entertainment has completed sales for France, Germany, Turkey, Italy and Russia for “QT8: The First Eight,” a documentary that chronicles Quentin Tarantino’s first eight films.

The first buyers’ screening took place on Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival. Tarantino’s ninth film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” premiered at Cannes on Tuesday night.

Producer Tara Wood completed “QT8: The First Eight” after a protracted legal battle to regain the rights following a production deal with the Weinstein Company back in 2016. The screening in Cannes was the first time potential distributors saw the final cut of the film.

Evil Dead 2 has gotten a groovy 4K upgrade thanks to Studio Canal and they’ve released a trailer for it that will remind you how much fun this movie is! The trailer also teases some of the special features which includes exclusive interviews with Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright.

With Halloween fast approaching, this writer wanted to unpack one of his all-time favorite horror movies, Evil Dead II (a.k.a. Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn). The first time I beheld the original The Evil Dead (1981), I found myself utterly terrified by the movie’s grisly carnage, completely charmed by its obvious low-fi origins, and wholly bewildered by a sense of humor that can only be described as “Three Stooges-esque.” The fact that it was made by a bunch of college dropouts from the suburbs of Michigan, through money raised largely from suburban dentists and grocers, only made its achievement all the more impressive. The movie’s charmingly crude special effects and daringly acrobatic camerawork only served to enhance its freshness, positioning it as a raw, gritty antidote to that era’s glossier, tamer studio horror fare.

There’s always a lot of talk leading up to the big day about who will win what awards. We try to make our predictions based on trends from the past, but we can’t help to be swayed by our own personal opinions. In the opinion of this writer, it’s about time that somebody put out a guide to the Halloween series that’ll help general moviegoers make sense of it. Sure, you and I may know all the specifics, but the timeline is choppier than that of even the X-Men franchise.

Long story short, we had the first six films (well, we should probably exclude Season of the Witch) that remained canonical for the longest time, before H20 disregarded all but the first two, with Resurrection serving as its sequel. Then, Rob Zombie hit the reset button in 2007 as he helmed two pictures set in a universe all their own. And, now, Blumhouse is readying a new take that follows only the 1978 original. Seriously, what the hell?!

Personally, I thought 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers to be one of the low points in the series, what with its goofy chosen one-style storyline.

Before they made the cult classic Evil Dead, the key people behind the film were at work making tons of Super-8 shorts in hopes of getting any of their projects made into a film. Those projects haven't been available to own, until now. Scott Spiegel, who directed Evil Dead 2 has gotten together with Bill Ward and collected a compilation of those shorts and packaged it into a DVD compilation titled Before The Evil Dead: The Super-8 Short Films. 

The DVD contains 11 shorts created before the film that feature Bruce Campbell, and other faces you might remember. This short below "Curse Of The Werewolf" is one of them. I can't really say it's good, but I can say that I can see the influence that would eventually go on to create the Evil Dead franchise. Check it out below. Cupsogue Pictures announced today that Stormare will be playing Lucius, one of the main antagonists in the flick. He joins the previously announced Bruce Campbell, Stephen Marcus, and James Buckley for the feature, which is set to take us deep into the bowels of Hell.
