Elvis Presley’s bodyguards protected him from physical threats, but they also wanted to safeguard his reputation. When they learned about a rumor circulating about Elvis, they decided they needed to put a stop to it. One bodyguard decided that the best path forward was to threaten the perpetrator’s life.
Elvis Presley’s bodyguard tried to protect him against rumors
When Elvis stayed in Las Vegas to play residencies, he got frequent massages from the same man, whom his bodyguards called Big Bill. Each time, Elvis tipped him $100, which his bodyguards felt was more than generous. They were frustrated, then, when they heard Big Bill was spreading rumors about Elvis’ drug use. They discovered this while talking to a stranger from New York.
“Anyway, it seems that one of these guys from New York was getting a massage, and this Big Bill starts shooting his mouth off to him...

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

Based on the master of martial arts, Bruce Lee’s writings, Cinemax brought an action-drama named Warrior that aired its first season in 2019 and the second season in the following year. In the second season, the aftermath of the race riots caused a lot of problems in Chinatown. Mai Ling exploited the connections she had with the government to become more powerful and gain control over Chinatown. Meanwhile, Ah Sham and Hop Wei struggled to hold the fort amid the turmoil. Chinatown was in chaos, and the coinciding storylines added layers of suspense to the show.
Season 3 of Warrior continued to build upon the complex storyline, introducing new characters that enriched the show. Warrior season 3 delivered an intriguing premise packed with intense action sequences that stole the hearts of many. Let’s take a closer look at the details of the story.

When the show teased alliances, it was not supposed to go like this.
Most of the conflicts boiling throughout Warrior Season 3 were resolved in Warrior Season 3 Episode 10, making for a satisfying ending to several of them.
The cold open saw Mai Ling visit Eliza to unburden about what Eliza's accusation had done to Mai Ling's life and mental well-being.
The scene was tense as the expectations were that Mai Ling would take her revenge in some form, and when she drew the knife, it was supposed to be over for Eliza.
Instead, Mai Ling gave a monologue highlighting Eliza's insecurities and how she lashed out at the nearest person she considered weak.
When I came to this country, I made myself a promise that I would never be bought or sold again. That I would never be subservient to another man. And that I would die rather than be anyone's whore.

As events unfold, the hope of seeing the Tongs united keeps dimming.
There was a major shift in the narrative on Warrior Season 3 Episode 9 as many characters made moves, shifting the story in an entirely new direction.
Warrior Season 3 teased alliances, but what unfolded here could not be further from that assessment.
We'll begin at the beginning, and that's with Lai at Douglas's place.
I thought that Lai was working with Ah Toy to bring down Douglas, but after she attacked him, I quickly realized how wrong I was.
A sword fight ensued that saw Douglas emerge on top, which didn't sit well. How was a businessman who spends most of his time in meetings and raining holy hell on people stronger than a martial art expert who was like a killing machine?
We had never seen Douglas in a sword fight before, so we had no prior knowledge about...

Tough situations call for tough measures, even if those measures mean aligning oneself with their mortal enemy.
Mai Ling and Young Jun were arrested but ended up in different places on Warrior Season 3 Episode 5, causing them to reevaluate their business model and associates.
One thing that everyone can be sure of when arrested is that you will be taken to jail.
No one likes jail, but Young Jun would have preferred to be in prison rather than that camp. It was not only a violation of the law to lock Americans up like that, but it was also inhumane.
That's not to say that Mai Ling was fairing better in jail because it also had challenges. For someone used to the luxuries being a tong leader provided, being hosed down like a slaughterhouse's floor was demeaning.
Deeds of our past will always catch up with us, and whatever we put...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Clint Might Be Complicit in an Orangutan Date Rape
By 1978, Clint Eastwood had starred in Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name trilogy, headlined three “Dirty Harry” movies, and directed six feature films. He could have pulled an Alexander the Great and wept because there was nothing left to conquer. Instead, he teamed up with a monkey.
Against the advice of his agent and manager, Eastwood used his Hollywood clout to force a weird little comedy script called “Every Which Way But Loose” into production. He stars in the film as Philo Beddoe,...

Some shows deserve saving. After watching Warrior Season 3 premiere, the show makes an excellent case for why it deserves to be around.
It has almost been three years since its future was in the air after Cinemax stopped making scripted content, and many shows can't survive being off the air for so long.
When different platforms with different business models save shows, there are many noticeable changes in the show's creative direction, which can make or break it.
Yet, there was no noticeable change in Warrior Season 3 as it delivered the same complexly interwoven narrative, epic action sequences, stellar writing, and good music.
Watching the three-episode season premiere was a great reminder of why this show is loveable and perfectly entertaining.
Warrior Season 3 Episode 1 picked up a short while after the wild race war that plagued San Francisco in the Warrior Season 2 finale.

An audience may ask very basic questions like "What is real?" and the answer is "Nothing, it is a movie." That doesn't make any of it any less real, not even the stuff that is markedly false. If that sounds hedged then know the boundaries of wilderness and the labyrinths of bocage are part and parcel of landscapes and interiors inflected by psychogeography. Where these selves travel these selves are their travails. As Buckaroo Banzai observed, "wherever you go, there you are."
While the picaresques and pilgrims' progresses of Harold Fry, Captain Willard, or Howard Ratner share similarities better analogue travelogues might be found in dreams. Midsummer Night's by big Bill of course, but other tales with playes within plays: Your Mulholland Drive, your Synecdoche, New York.
With any quest there is a temptation to try to map it to another hero's journey, even that ur-story of Campbell's that's been duplicated.

Johnny Ferraro comes across like a Mafia soldier in witness relocation as a used car salesman, or maybe that one casino employee you really don’t want to mess with. He has a way of looking at the camera like he wants to strangle it, or at least spit on it. But somehow, some way, he musters charm. Ferraro is the creator of the much-mocked, absurdly popular proto-reality-tv competition series American Gladiators. Or is he?

Match #1: The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn def. Rush, Preston Vance & Dralistico
My Thoughts: This was another average match from The Acclaimed who don’t seem to be able to kick things into top gear at all recently. Having the trio of Katsumata, Ueno and Mao face three long-standing and talented Aew veterans like The Butcher and The Blade and Kip Sabian made a lot of sense too. My Thoughts: This was an incredibly dull opening match and a squash match at that too. Nese and Daivari are, unfortunately, pretty much charisma-free and that doesn’t help their matches in the slightest; and with this match we didn’t even get any words from Mark Sterling to cover that fact up!

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features just seven matches (thankfully). Anyway, on with the review…
Match #1: Skye Blue def. Mylo
My Thoughts: We haven’t seen Mylo on Aew programming since September last year and unlike that appearance, where she was thoroughly squashed in a tag match against the Renegade Twins, here she manages to play a brilliant heel to Skye Blue’s babyface. And it’s something I’d be happy to see more of, maybe have the duo run this match back in the future?
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Brian Cage def. Bad Dude Tito
My Thoughts: It’s not often Brian Cage gets an opponent of his size and stature or an opponent who can hold his own against him, but that’s exactly what Bad Dude Tito did – even managing to get a 2-count on Cage at one point.

With Ronald Reagan coasting to a landslide reelection in 1984 via patriotic posturing and Cold War fear-mongering, the time was right for John Milius' "Red Dawn." This expertly crafted martial fantasy about the Soviet Union capitalizing on a global catastrophe to invade a geopolitically isolated United States made a killing at the box office thanks largely to teenagers who believed they could, via ingenuity and love for country, lead a guerilla resistance against the freedom-hating Commie horde.
I fell hard for it as a 10-year-old in 1984, and still love it as a strange, heartfelt relic of post-Vietnam confidence building. Americans were so desperate for a military victory that they puffed their chests out after the successful invasion of Grenada in 1983. Since we all knew that a toe-to-toe slugfest against the Ussr would likely result in nuclear armageddon, we had to get our ass-kicking wishes fulfilled at the multiplex. And so Milius...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features seven matches… Including a Women’s Roh title match! Anyway, on with the review.
Match #1: Juice Robinson def. Travis Williams
My Thoughts: Juice Robinson makes another appearance for Aew and faces some decent competition in Travis Williams. This was a well-paced, competitive, start to Dark.

My Thoughts: The new team of Ruby Soho & Willow Nightingale get another outing, this time against the heel team of Emi Sakura & Diamante, who have worked together before and delivered each and every time. And the same is the case here, with Soho and Nightgale really gelling – I’d definitely like to see them stay together as a team for a while longer even though I’d like to see Willow Nightingale make her way up the singles scene too.

Development continues on a live action, supernatural crime TV series, based on the feature "Maniac Cop" (1988), to be produced and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and John Hyams, for HBO in North America and Canal+ in France:
The first "Maniac Cop" feature, directed by William Lustig, starred Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Robert Z'Dar, and Sheree North, following an ex-police officer, who returns from the dead, seeking revenge on criminals, corrupt politicians and co-workers who wronged him.
"Maniac Cop" was followed by the feature sequels, "Maniac Cop 2" (1990) and "Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence".
"We've been talking about a re-imagining of the 'Maniac Cop' films for a number of years," said Refn, "but as we continued to work on the material, we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth.
