Today, BritBox and the BBC announced the cast of Riot Women, the brand-new drama series from the multi-bafta award-winning writer Sally Wainwright.
Leading the cast and the Riot Women band are Joanna Scanlan as Beth, Rosalie Craig as Kitty, Tamsin Greig as Holly, Lorraine Ashbourne as Jess, and Amelia Bullmore as Yvonne.
Anne Reid (The Sixth Commandment) will play Nancy, Holly and Yvonne’s mother, with Sue Johnston (The Royle Family) as Jess’s Aunt Mary. Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), and Angel Coulby (Merlin) also join the cast.
In Riot Women, we dive headfirst into the world of five women who, along with two riotous backing singers, come together to create a makeshift punk-rock band in order to enter a local talent contest, but in writing their first original song, soon discover that they have a lot to say – and this is their way to say it.

Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 “Plodding On”.
Look carefully at the end credits for Inside No. 9 finale “Plodding On” and in among the names of the many, many previous guest stars who came back to send the anthology show on its way is one puzzling entry. BBC’s hit comedy Outnumbered is making a comeback after eight years with a brand-new Christmas Special. More on it below.
BBC has announced today that Outnumbered, their hit comedy, is coming back for a Christmas Special this year. The news come to us from BBC Comedy Festival which is being held at Glasgow, where Deadline was present to catch the announcement live.
Created by Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, Outnumbered ran from 2007 to 2014 and returned for a one-off Christmas Special in 2016. The semi-improv comedy followed the Brockman family, consisting of dad Pete, mum Sue and kids Jake, Ben and Karen. The series was produced by Hat Trick Productions.
The Christmas Special will see the kids all grown up and Pete and Sue coming to terms with an empty nest. According to Deadline, the special will focus on the challenges of parenting your kids after they’ve grown up in a downsized home.

Wahey, it’s Christmas. Time to celebrate by ranking television designed to air when everyone is drunk or angry or asleep or all three. This is exactly what Jesus would have wanted.
The Doctor Who Festive Specials have been part of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year’s Day line-up since 2005 – times when there’s something of a captive audience who might not normally watch the show. Unlike the 1965 Christmas Day episode, the hope is that they’ll attract a broader audience. Some episodes are more forgiving for casual viewers than others. Some episodes will garner the ultimate praise from your father-in-law: complete silence for the duration followed by ‘That was rather good’. Some episodes make absolutely no sense to anyone who only watches at Christmas.
Including Chris Chibnall’s three New Year specials (but not ‘Spyfall’ because it’s a series opener rather than a one-off special episode) brings us to 17 stories,...

"Love, relationships – all a matter of perspective." Warner Bros UK has released the official UK trailer for the holiday romantic comedy Boxing Day, directed by and co-written by and starring actor Aml Ameen. For those that don't know, Boxing Day is a British holiday celebrated the day after Christmas Day, occurring the second day of Christmastide. Inspired by Ameen's own life, Boxing Day follows Melvin, a British author living in America, who returns home to London for Christmas to introduce his American fiancée, Lisa, to his eccentric British-Caribbean family. Their relationship is put to the test when she discovers the world her fiancée left behind in the UK. Aja Naomi King co-stars as his new lover, joined by Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Tamara Lawrance, Sheyi Cole, Samson Kayo, Joshua Maloney, Lisa Davina Phillip, and Claire Skinner. This actually looks good! Sure it's a bit cheesy and cliche, but nice to...

Peter Nichols, the British playwright whose play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg provided Albert Finney with his 1968 Broadway debut and did the same in 2003 for Eddie Izzard, died Sept. 7 in Oxford, England. He was 92.
His death was announced on Twitter by agent Alan Brodie Representation. A cause of death was not given.
In addition to Joe Egg, his most familiar play, Nichols’ credits include the 1972 film version starring Alan Bates and 1966’s Swinging London touchstone Georgy Girl starring Lynne Redgrave, Bates, Charlotte Rampling and James Mason.
Based on his own difficult experience as the father of a daughter born with severe disabilities, Nichols’ A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg – Joe was short for Josephine – used broad, music-hall style comedy to tell the story of a married couple struggling to care for their daughter with cerebral palsy. With the jarring use of dark comedy to avoid sentimentality,...

Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi starred in four Doctor Who Christmas specials each. We revisit Steven Moffat's festive scripts...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Steven Moffat’s first Christmas-y contribution to Doctor Who comes near the end of his second episode, The Doctor Dances, when Rose Tyler compares a jolly Doctor to Santa Claus. “Who says I’m not, red bicycle when you were 12?” comes the cheeky reply.
Comparisons between the Doctor and Father Christmas go all the way back to Moffat’s Comic Relief sketch The Curse Of Fatal Death and continue all the way throughout his tenure as head writer and executive producer, particularly in his seasonal specials. Having inherited the tradition, he upheld it very well.
Like Russell T. Davies before him, Moffat didn’t treat the Christmas special as a trifle or a passing fancy, but as a proper episode of Doctor Who.

There’s something comforting about the predictability of a period piece novel adaptation in the Masterpiece Theater tradition. Knowing the story, or even just the rhythms of the genre, there are rarely many surprises. The women will toss off witticisms and cry careful, pretty tears; the men will steel their jaws and declare their love, ideally after reluctantly falling for a woman they hadn’t considered before. There will be romance, heartbreak, births, deaths. Even when it’s not a great adaptation, it’s at least familiar, and that can go a long way.
“Vanity Fair” is counting on just such leniency. It’s neither terrible nor amazing, but at the very least, it’s efficient.
In seven episodes spanning years of social climbing, devastating warfare, and undulating class dynamics, this latest version of William Thackeray’s “Vanity Fair” enlists a game cast to follow Becky Sharp (Olivia Cooke), an...

Anyone who watched the last series of Line of Duty on BBC One will know that Jed Mercurio knows how to write compelling drama, and now he's returning to the medical genre with Critical, a 13-part series set in the trauma unit of a London hospital.
Explaining the thought process behind the show, Mercurio says that he wanted to "push the boundaries" of the genre further than ever before. He enjoyed huge success with his previous attempts, Bodies and Cardiac Arrest, so what can he do this time that he hasn't already tried?
Within the opening two minutes, it's clear that Critical is a very different beast to Mercurio's previous work, and most other contemporary medical dramas. With the presence of a 24-style countdown clock, each episode takes place during a trauma patient's "golden hour" – when it really is a case of life or death.

David Tennant and Rosamund Pike play the put-upon parents of three kids in this feature-format development of Outnumbered
It’s impossible not to enjoy this big-hearted and sweet-natured British family movie from Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin – effectively a feature-format development of their smash-hit BBC TV comedy, Outnumbered, which pioneered semi-improvised dialogue from the children. It creates a terrifically ambitious (and unexpected) narrative with a tonne of sharp gags. I would have liked to see Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner reprise their roles as the mum and dad, but because we have all seen their fictional children grow up on the small screen that is not really feasible. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike are Doug and Abi, the troubled parents of three boisterous kids: they’re heading up to Scotland for the 75th birthday of Doug’s unwell dad, Gordy (Billy Connolly), which means staying with Doug’s uptight brother,...

Outnumbered is set to return for a fifth series this year. Apart from a Christmas Special, the last full series was back in 2011 and the new series show just how much those Brockman kids have grown, including a new hair colour for Karen.
Beleaguered parents Pete (Hugh Dennis) and Sue (Claire Skinner) continue to battle through life both within and outside of their hectic household. Sue has a brand new office job and, predictably, struggles to maintain an aura of composure with her three growing offspring to contend with back home, while Pete is besieged by unreliable technologies.
Jake (played by 17 year old Tyger Drew-Honey) is sporting a new tattoo - of sorts - and is getting behind the wheel to learn to drive.
Tone-deaf Ben (played by the now 14 year old Daniel Roche) is set to take the lead in his school play - a musical version of Spartacus.

Doctor: Eleventh
Story: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe (2011 Christmas Special)
Background: Madge is a mother of two and wife to Reg, a bomber pilot in WWII. After stumbling across the Doctor and helping him, she falls upon hard times (Reg and his plane go missing over the English Channel). When she wishes that she could give her children one final happy Christmas (before breaking the news of his disappearance to them), the Doctor returns to repay his debt, whisking them off to a winter wonderland (Androzani Minor, of The Caves of Androzani fame) only to become embroiled in a dangerous adventure.

Stepping out for a momentous occasion, Kate Middleton showed up at the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Coronation of the Queen this morning (June 4).
The Duchess of Cambridge was gorgeous and very pregnant as she arrived at Westminster Abbey with her hubby Prince William for the first public event they've attended there since the wedding more than two years ago.
Today’s ceremony marks a wonderful milestone in Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and will be divided up into Recognition, Anointing, Homage, and Thanksgiving, all taken from her original Coronation back in 1953.
Additionally, Prime Minister David Cameron will give a reading and actress Claire Skinner will read a poem from Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. It’s going to be a Royally good time!

1990’s Life is Sweet is generally considered – when it’s considered at all – one of the lesser lights in writer/director Mike Leigh’s constellation of films. The work’s underwhelming reputation was aided and abetted by the fact that for the last 20 years it’s been damn hard to see. With no official North American rental release, a purchase only, on demand DVD burn from Amazon has been the film’s only means of dissemination for much of the world. Fortunately, Criterion has stepped in to right this injustice with a gorgeous new Blu-ray edition, and life is once again sweet for the legions of Leigh.
In fact, Life is Sweet is the prototypical Mike Leigh film, embodying all that is right and good about the early phase of the director’s career. Before he branched into darker themes and period pieces, Leigh made his name with sharply observed...

Steven Moffat’s hatedom started to develop pretty much the second after The Eleventh Hour (Moffat’s first episode of Doctor Who as head writer) was broadcast. Initially it was pretty standard hate with claims like “He’s a bad writer”, “He’s running Doctor Who into the ground”, and “That whirring sound is Doctor Who’s creators turning in their graves” being commonplace. Two and half years on and the Moffat hatedom has taken a disturbingly sinister turn. There’s always been the odd outright hateful comment such as “Moffat might as well have defecated on Elisabeth Sladen’s grave” (in reference to The Impossible Astronaut being dedicated to the late Elisabeth Sladen), but in the past few weeks things have been taken up a notch with accusations of misogyny and homophobia being levelled at Moffat, and rumours of death threats being tweeted to him. While the rumours of...
