Comic Book Reviews: DC Round Up Week 12-07-2016
We got Batman the one man army, Green Arrow and Aquaman getting the same “We didn’t do it” storyline, and a few other DC books continue to lose steam after an amazing start! Read on to see what’s going wrong with DC Comics Rebirth!
Aquaman #12
Story: Dan Abnett Art: Phillippe Briones, Gabe Elateb
Review: More of Nemo led by Black Manta framing Aquaman and the Atlaneteans for the attacks on U.S. Soil. No one wants to give Aquaman or the Atlanteans the benefit of the doubt and once more its Justice League to come get Arthur (while seemingly one cares about the surmounting death toll and damage being done to the various states). I think I’m done with Aquaman, this whole “U.S. hates Aquaman” storyline just keeps forcing me to stretch my imagination and acceptance of...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Round Up Week 11-16-2016
This week Batman’s plans for Operation: Break Bane’s Damn Back! Continues with an unexpected (but not really) twist, Green Arrow continues to deliver, and I basically give up Aquaman being interesting. To top it off I’m thinking I’ll finally drop Suicide Squad as despite Jim Lee’s artwork the story is just dumb. It’s lowest common denominator dumb. Characters acting different then they do anywhere else, being forced to feel more like the “movie”, and now potential zombie Captain Boomerangs. How did the other books fair this week? Read on!

After a brief hiatus from reviewing the great books of DC Comics I hop back and see what the current state of various series are. Officially moved from “I kind of care” to “I don’t care at all” are Cyborg, Justice League, Blue Beetle, Doom Patrol, Catwoman: Election Night and probably a few others soon. So the review list gets shorter! I am casually keeping up with these titles so if anyone has questions or thoughts feel free to sound off in the comments below and I’m more than happy to engage in discussion!

A little late this time around, but never forgotten! This week I take a quick look at the developing stories from DC’s Rebirth line up. While not a huge week for story development, we do get to wrap up a few plots and open the doors to a few more!
Action Comics #965
Story: Dan Jurgens Art: Stephen Segovia, Art Thibert, Arif Prianto, Dave Sharpe

To do that she pretends to the Lois Lane of New 52 Universe, and as expected things don’t go completely as planned. Jurgens continues to do an excellent job here with how he handles the characters. Published by Valiant Comics
No matter what age you are or how long you’ve been reading comics, getting into a new comics universe is always terrifying. Lots of backstory you don’t know about. Established characters with origins already explained. It can be intimidating. However, a good team with a good story can manage to bypass those fears, guide you in and make you fall in love with that character and their universe.
The first issue of Valiant Comics’ mini-series Faith is a good example of that.
Spinning out of the series Harbinger, Faith tells the story of psiot Faith Herbert (codename Zephyr) after she moves to La to become a better hero when she’s not working a job at Buzzfeed stand-in Zipline. Faith does have backstory that carries over from Harbinger,...

Dead Drop #1
Writer – Ales Kot
Artist – Adam Gorham
Colourist – Michael Spicer
Letterer – Dave Sharpe
Publisher – Valiant Entertainment
Valiant has been putting the pedal to the metal in 2015 through their multiple mini series’ alone. The Valiant brought upon an epic tale that felt like a historically twisted fairy tale in which some major players in the Valiant universe played a key role, and Divinity revealed a new and very powerful individual whose abilities from the far reaches of the cosmos have been brought to Earth. With a wide array of absolute top-notch creative teams on these books alone, the trifecta, the triumvirate, the third eye, if you will, is now found within the team behind Dead Drop.
It doesn’t take very long for the action to take hold and grab you. The opening page shows a graceful Aric Dacia, better known as X-o Manowar, flying rapidly down overtop Times Square in New York City.

It may have only debuted two months ago, yet the tale of Gilad Anna-Padda is so expertly handled that writer Greg Pak has created a monster with his fans. “Okay,” I said, a bit apprehensive and yes, curious.

In the first few days of the Olympics, the London games have already been marred by racism-tweeting athletes, cheating Badminton players and black-eye-distributing female soccer players. But the biggest controversy might just turn out to be one that may not exist.
Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen, 16, has been as on fire as someone can be while in water, taking gold in the 400-meter medley on Saturday and breaking the world record by a full second - even kicking things up during the final 50 meters to beat the speed of men's gold medalist Ryan Lochte. On Monday, she returned - and set the Olympic record for the 200-meter individual medley. Naturally, with any such performance these days comes an allegation best summed up in a word and a punctuation mark: Steroids?

As many of the titles of DC Comics ‘New 52’ wrap up their first story arcs for said series, so does the 5th issue of Gail Simone’s Batgirl. Personally, I wasn’t all too thrilled with the first four books of the new series outside of maybe the first two so it was a breath of fresh air to find the latest issue launching a brand new story arc for readers to jump into; particularly for those who are picking up the title for the first time.
The issue opens with Batgirl swinging into action high above a bridge in Gotham where a family of mobsters (yes, a real blood-related family) is keeping a large group of pedestrian motorists at bay. It’s clear from the start that something’s wrong with the mobsters state of mind as hinted by the few cryptic mentions of the number 338 (ie, demanding $3.38 from...

Crooner Tom Jones has spoken out after accusations a recent war-of-words with bosses at his record company was a publicity stunt to promote his new album. The veteran star signed a multi-million dollar contract with Island Records last October 2009 and is set to release his latest disc, "Praise and Blame", at the end of July.
A leaked email from Island's vice president David Sharpe to his colleagues at the company revealed he was unimpressed with the new tracks. Sharpe has since apologized to Jones for the comments, sparking claims the bust-up was launched on purpose - but Jones has laughed off the accusation."
He says, "If it is (a stunt), then it's a weird way (to promote the record) - to condemn an album. It still baffles me... You know, he's on the financial team there, he's not on the creative side. But people who read the article, they don't know that.

A leaked email from Sharpe asked if the the hymnal Praise & Blame was a "sick joke" and and urged his staff to "pull back this project immediately or get my money back". London, July 11 – Sir Tom Jones, whose latest album, ‘Praise and Blame,’ was described as ’some sick joke’ by his record company boss, is in no mood of taking the criticism lightly, irrespective of apology.
David Sharpe, the vice-president of his record company, Island Records, made the statement.
Describing Sharpe’s comments as “stupid”, the Welsh singer said: “What the hell is this all about? Who is this fella? I don’t even know who he is. I found out that he’s some fella who signs cheques or something.”
“They’ve apologised.
“They can’t apologise enough,” he added.
Sharpe wrote an email after.

Tom Jones' new album is a "sick joke," according to Island Records VP David Sharpe. The record label boss is said to be less than impressed with the 70-year-old Welsh singer's latest LP "Praise & Blame."
Sharpe was apparently demanding that the project be pulled out after hearing the spiritual tone of the songs. He thought the new songs being played in his company's office were for the Christmas market.
An email leak obtained by the Telegraph reads: "My initial pleasure came to an abrupt halt when I realized that Tom Jones was singing the hymns! I have just listened to the album in its entirety and want to know if this is some sick joke???"
"We did not invest a fortune in an established artist for him to deliver 12 tracks from the common book of prayer. Having lured him from Emi, the deal was that you would deliver a record...

Daring American stuntman who often doubled for Tony Curtis and starred in the TV series The High Chaparral
Among the many unsung heroes of film history are those individuals who make actors seem more athletic and daring than they could possibly be. Although the raison d'etre of his profession is invisibility, the stuntman and stunts co-ordinator Robert Hoy, who has died of cancer aged 82, was one of the few whose name and face have emerged from anonymity.
As well as enjoying a long career as a stuntman – he continued into his 60s – Hoy, an expert horseman, appeared in more than 150 films and television series in small parts. One of his largest roles was the ranch-hand Joe Butler in 62 episodes of The High Chaparral from 1967 to 1971. With his thick black moustache, dark hair and sideboards, and invariably wearing a blue shirt, Hoy made Butler into a hard-riding, hard-fighting, hard-drinking masculine figure,...

Buck Rogers In The 25Th Century, the first science fiction comic strip, hit the newspapers in 1929, finally ending its long run in 1967. Writer Phil Nowlan created the character in two Sf pulp stories (published in Amazing Stories) before teaming with artist Dick Calkins on the spin-off strip. Buck Rogers is a former Air Force officer who falls into suspended animation while investigating a strange gas in a mineshaft. He awakens 500 years later to an America that has been conquered by Monguls. Buck meets Wilma Deering, who recruits him to fight the invaders; Dr. Huer, a brilliant scientist who will soon have Buck rocketing to other planets; and Wilma’s brother Buddy. Sometime space pirate “Killer” Kane became Buck’s primary nemesis along with Kane’s sultry assistant Ardala Valmar.
