ABC is piloting a new comedy starring and exec produced by Ty Burrell.
Deadline revealed that the multicamera project Forgive & Forget was in the works a year ago and the project, which comes from Punky Brewster duo Eugene Garcia-Cross and Robin Shorr, is now moving forward.
It is the latest pilot order for the Disney-owned network; Deadline revealed that Tim Allen was returning to ABC for a family comedy from Duncanville co-creators Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Sully. That marked the first pilot order of the season for ABC, which has instead been focusing on year-round development.
The show, which comes from 20th Television, follows perennial life of the party Hank (Burrell). After an unexpected diagnosis, Hank reconnects with his responsible adult son Ben in hopes of making new memories together.
Garcia-Cross will write with Shorr as showrunner. They will exec produce alongside Burrell via his Desert Whale Productions banner.

Last Man Standing and Home Improvement actor Tim Allen is gearing up to lead an all-new ABC comedy as the network has ordered a pilot for a multi-camera sitcom. The pilot tentatively titled Shifting Gears comes from Duncanville cocreators Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Sully, who executive produced Last Man Standing with Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina, according to Deadline. Written by the Scullys, the series would center around Allen’s character Matt, described as a stubborn widower who owns a classic car shop. (Credit: Michael Becker/Fox) When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration will begin though. As mentioned above, this would be Allen’s latest team-up with the Scullys, after he led the comedy Last Man Standing for nine seasons. Last Man Standing first began in 2011, airing for six seasons on ABC until 2017 when it was ultimately canceled.

Tim Allen is one step closer to returning to ABC for a third time. The Alphabet net has given a pilot order to his latest sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” from 20th Television. Allen is on board to star and executive produce the multi-cam sitcom pilot — which is still a working title — which will also be written and executive produced by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully.
In the project, Allen plays Matt, the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker and Rick Messina are the non-writing exec producers on the show.
“Shifting Gears” continues Allen’s long association with ABC and Disney, including the long-running hit (1991-1997) “Home Improvement.” Allen later starred on ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” which aired on the Alphabet web from 2011 to...

A showrunners picket at Fox that started as a way to show solidarity during the strike ended up raising close to $45,000 for crew members who have been adversely affected by the work stoppage.
Strike Captain Amy Berg encouraged showrunners who attended the Sept. 12 picket to bring along gift cards so she could distribute them to support staff in need. More than 300 high-powered scribes, including Steve Levitan, Shawn Ryan, Aline Brosh-McKenna, Carlton Cuse, Rene Balcer, Jack Burditt, Mike Scully, Matt Selman, Andy Gordon, Tucker Cawley and David Shore, walked the line that day.
At today’s IATSE appreciation day at Fox, Berg distributed the gift cards to 115 people. She plans to mail more out this week to crew members.
“I was looking at all these amazing funds we have out there, but noticed that most require a long application process which can delay people getting the help they need,” Berg told Deadline. “I just thought, what could we do that offered immediate assistance?”
Those who participated in today’s IATSE appreciation picket received at least $150 word of cards to grocery stores and retail outlets like Target.
“Things everyone can use,” said Berg. “I basically started a nonprofit in one week, thanks to the generosity of my fellow showrunners.”
Showrunners have already contributed more than $500,000 recently to the Entertainment Community Fund. (Click for the showrunner donation link). Most of the donors have been anonymous.
There’s renewed optimism that the WGA and AMPTP can reach a deal now that both parties have agreed to meet tomorrow.
The WGA sent out a note to members confirming the talks: “The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday. You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating, but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report. In the meantime, please continue to demonstrate your commitment and unity by coming out to the picket lines – for yourselves and fellow writers, SAG-AFTRA, other unions’ members, and all those in our community who are impacted by the strikes.”...

A group of top-tier showrunners including Kenya Barris and Noah Hawley has set a meeting with the WGA leadership as they try to aid the negotiating process.
The move is not a sign of discontent among the guild, as rumored by some, but rather a chance to bring more high-profile folks into the process as the writers strike has moved into its fourth month.
We hear that Black-ish creator Barris, Hawley, the man behind FX’s Fargo and its upcoming Alien series, and others are set to sit down with leadership on Friday at the WGA West’s L.A. headquarters.
“This was meant to be an information session and not meant to offer anything more than help,” a source close to events told Deadline. “That is still the intention so we can all get a fair deal to get back to work.”

This article contains spoilers for the Disenchantment series finale.
A new animated series from Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, should have been a clear winner and modern cartoon classic. Oddly enough, Bean’s misadventures through Dreamland and its constant fantasy genre subversions in Disenchantment have barely left a mark on the medium. It initially seemed like Disenchantment had somehow learned the worst lessons from The Simpsons and Futurama through a focus on dense lore and heavy serialized stories. Disenchantment, while fun, would struggle with its growing scope and undergo a perpetual identity crisis on the type of series it wanted to be and what it does best.
It’s been a bumpy journey, but Disenchantment impressively pulls everything together for its final season. This last batch of episodes finally figures out how to use this big world and its many supporting characters after seasons of awkward attempts to connect these dots.

One picketer said it best: “The longer this strike goes, the more detailed these signs get.”
Judging by some of those Simpsons-themed placards, he’s not wrong. But there have also been lots of not-so-veiled references to some of the ongoing strike coverage. (Don’t recognize the reference to Carol Lombardini and The Cheesecake Factory? Read this story. Can’t remember the exact quote about putting people out of their homes? That notorious line originated here.)
Some of the signs also just show signs of fatigue. “I’m gonna be honest I’m running out of clever sign memes,” said one. “Cause, like, seriously?”
It’s now day 120 of the WGA strike and Day 47 of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Here’s what some picketers have to say these days about walking the line.

At the start of the writers strike, The Animation Guild, an entirely separate union to the WGA, came out in support of the labor action, pledging to “stand in solidarity” with WGA members.
However, as the strike hits the eight-week mark, one of the key issues in the TV animation world has reared its head again: the unusual way that animation projects are covered by labor unions.
Michael Jamin, a co-executive producer of animated series including King of the Hill and Brickleberry as well as live-action series such as Tacoma Fd and Lopez, highlighted the topic in a recent video (see it below).
“By some strange loophole, animated shows are either covered by the Animation Guild or the WGA, and strangely, it’s the studios that get to decide which one, not the writers themselves,” he said. “It seems to be me as that should be illegal, it seems like...

Amy Poehler‘s animated comedy Duncanville is coming to a close after three seasons as Fox has decided to cancel the series. As reported by TVLine, the remaining six episodes of the third season will stream exclusively on Hulu later this year. The series, which launched in February 2020, was quickly renewed for a second season just two months after its premiere. A third season was picked up last year and premiered this May. However, the ratings are down 25 percent from Season 2, and it has become the least viewed show on Fox this past TV season. The series was co-created by Poehler, Mike Scully, and Julie Thacker Scully and revolved around Duncan Harris (voiced by Poehler), an average 15-year-old boy who is always one step away from making a good decision. Poehler also voiced Duncan’s meter maid mom Annie, while Ty Burrell played Duncan’s plumber dad Jack, Riki Lindhome voiced angsty sister Kimberly,...

The Animation Guild is gearing up for its contract negotiations next week, with animation writers looking to see a significant boost in pay as part of their new deal with studios.
Animation writers are organized under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and have long been paid much less than their live-action counterparts, who belong to the Writers Guild of America. They have begun campaigning on social media, using the hashtag #PayAnimationWriters, and are hoping to ride a wave of labor activism to make significant gains in talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
“We really deserve parity with the WGA,” said Mairghread Scott, who has written on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Transformers” animated series, and who chairs the union’s writers committee. “There’s no difference in quality and no difference in difficulty. We deserve to be paid commensurately with writers who do the same job.

For the last three decades, Fox animated comedies have been modeled after the network’s biggest hit. So by now, we’ve seen dozens of “Simpsons” variations — where a working-class family faces fresh problems every week, and satirize certain trends or parody select pieces of pop culture while solving them. The classic sitcom structure (emphasis on classic) also means most of these shows follow the family patriarch, (while prominently featuring the other three-to-six family members), most are geared toward adults (but carry morally sound messaging), and all of them focus on straight, white couples at their center.

Last year’s newcomer “Bless the Harts,” for instance, focuses more on the Hart family matriarchs, Jenny (voiced by Kristen Wiig) and her mother Betty (Maya Rudolph), than their respective husband and son-in-law,...

The two shows become two of the first formal cancellations of the season. Both were produced by 20th Century Fox Television, which split from the network after coming under Disney ownership earlier this year.

The Lil Rel Howery-starring comedy Rel will not get a second season at Fox. The network has canceled the comedy series from Jerrod Carmichael, Mike Scully and 20th Century Fox TV, after one season.
Of the other two Fox freshman comedy series, Last Man Standing is fully expected to be renewed while The Cool Kids is heavily on the bubble.
There was a hint at Rel’s fate when Fox last fall opted not to give a back order to the series. (The network ended up trimming the original order from 13 to 12 episodes.) Rel did not take advantage of its post-Family Guy time slot on Sunday. Its first season averaged a modest 0.8 adults 18-49 rating and 2.1 million viewers in Live+7.
The Rel family suffered a tragic loss in January when co-creator/executive producer Kevin Barnett died suddenly while vacationing in Mexico, a little over a week after the season one finale had aired.

Get ready for a fresh twist on a Fox animated comedy. Fox Entertainment chief Charlie Collier said the network plans to “double down” on its strength in adult animation with two new shows on deck that will offer a strong female perspective.
“We know what the ‘Fox Dad’ is — Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin — now we have the ‘Fox Mom’ coming up,” Collier said during his keynote address on April 7 at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Executive Leadership Summit, held as part of the Nab’s annual weeklong conference in Las Vegas.
Collier cited the upcoming animated comedy “Bless the Harts,” toplined by Kristen Wiig from comedy veteran Emily Spivey and Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Also on tap is “Duncanville,” spearheaded by Amy Poehler and creators Mike Scully and Julie Thacker-Scully, with Rashida Jones on board for the voice cast.
“It’s a murderer’s row of talent,” Collier said.

The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully tweeted up a storm on Sunday in support of the WGA membership’s vote this week on a new Agency Code of Conduct that would ban packaging fees and force talent agencies to sever their ties with affiliated production companies. The WGA and the Association of Talent Agents will return to the bargaining table tomorrow in an attempt to work out a deal for a new franchise agreement in advance of the April 6 deadline.
“I hope this is resolved, but companies don’t like to let go of money once they’ve figured how to get it, even if it’s a conflict of interest & they don’t earn it,” he tweeted. “The data they’ve slapped together at the 11th hour is bullshit, their arguments insulting & offensive. Vote Yes.”
