UK-based sales agency Together Films has acquired worldwide rights to Hasan Oswald’s documentary Mediha, which had its international premiere this past weekend at Cph:dox.
The film plays in the new Cph:dox Human Rights award section. It comes to Copenhagen from Doc NYC, where it won the Grand Jury award and was runner-up for the audience award in November.
Mediha follows Mediha Alhamad, a teenage Yazidi girl recently returned from Isis captivity, who turns on her camera to process her trauma while rescuers search for her missing family members.
Alhamad is also credited as cinematographer, having filmed herself and her family for three years.

Bafta has appointed Courtney Labarge Bell as the new executive director of its North America branch.
Taking over the role from Matthew Wiseman in March, Bell will oversee the teams in Los Angeles and New York as well as the organisation’s US initiatives including Breakthrough USA and the Newcomers program. She will work closely with UK-based Bafta CEO Jane Millichip and the recently appointed chair of the North America board of directors, Joyce Pierpoline.

International producers can count on help from the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia to take advantage of an “extraordinary explosion” in culture and film, U.S Ambassador Michael Ratney told Variety during the third edition of the Red Sea Film Festival. He said the ambition and drive of the Saudi film industry was an opportunity for international talent.
“These last five years have seen just an extraordinary explosion in the cultural space, using film, arts of all sorts,” Ratney said. Coupled with what he dubbed “a defining characteristic of Saudi Arabia, which is extraordinary ambition,” the development of a domestic film industry keen to attract international film productions was creating opportunities not seen before.

Imanol Rayo’s “Dog Days,” a coming-of-age story set one sizzling summer in the Spanish countryside, won the top prize at the Thessaloniki Film Festival’s Crossroads Co-Production Forum, which wrapped with an award ceremony Wednesday night.

Well, you should all be excited that Mitchell Lichtenstein has directed another thriller. Jena Malone (Sucker Punch) has agreed to star in Pierpoline Films supernatural thriller, Angelica. According to Deadline, the film is adapted from Arthur Phillips’ 2007 bestselling novel and will be directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein (Happy Tears). Malone will portray Constance, a young shop girl who catches the eye of local doctor Joseph Barton. Joyce Pierpoline (In the Company of Men) and Richard Lormand will handle producing chores involved with bringing the chilling story to the big screen.

Chinese-American actress and director Joan Chen is set to work in both capacities on the three-story anthology feature "Seeing Red" reports Screen Daily.
Chen will star in and helm one of three separate revenge stories about women in New York’s Chinatown. Chen will play a devoted housewife who discovers her husband is living a double life.
Liselle Mei helms one of the other segments, while a third female director will be added soon.
Joyce Pierpoline and Richard Lormand are producing. The $4-6 million project shoots later this Fall and will be a mix of English and Mandarin.

John Sloss made the deal with LionsGate, and The Weinstein Co. is suing saying the deal was theirs. Sloss says they're overreaching. I wonder what induced Tom Ortenberg to leave LionsGate to join The Weinstein Company. Did it have anything to do with the Push deal? Last year The Weinstein Co. and Lionsgate acquired Teeth together, which was subsequently released by Roadside Attractions on a lease deal by Dimension Extreme. This year in Berlin, Richard Lormand and Joyce Pierpolone, producers of Teeth are proud to have Mitchell Lichtenstein's next film Happy Tears in competition. Maybe The Weinstein Co. and LionsGate will get in a bidding war over it.
