Immanuel Kant + Bugs Bunny = Winston J. Perez? Now, there's a "concept." Or maybe not. The only way to be sure, as Winston Perez views a term that has come to define his professional life in Hollywood, is to take a close look at Perez's latest work, an upcoming book with an imposing title: Concerning the Nature and Structure of Concept. Some of it is heavier reading than the average entertainment executive has done since pulling a C+ in that sophomore philosophy class…...

As we’ve seen here in the first few weeks of 2014, the landscape of the horror genre is absolutely flooded with found footage movies, and we primarily have two movies to thank/blame for that; The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.
While 1999’s Blair Witch Project is often credited as the first horror movie made in the Pov found footage style, such a claim is actually quite untrue. Though Blair Witch is no doubt the movie that popularized the style, and Paranormal Activity the one that re-invented it and brought it into a new decade, there were actually a handful of found footage films that came out well before the horrifying tale of the witch in the woods.
Here are seven of those handheld horror movies, which all predate The Blair Witch Project!

Thanks to Pacific Rim and the upcoming Godzilla, it’s no surprise to see a rise in giant monster entertainment, and we have news on the latest, “Fear Force Five.”
New web series “Fear Force Five” is poised to take the daikaiju genre to delirious new heights when it premieres for free just in time for Christmas.
Jack Perez, director of Some Guy Who Kills People, Monster Island, and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, is the mastermind behind the monstrous new CineFix web series, set to debut December 23rd. How crazy will this show get? The first episode’s gargantuan threat is a giant zombie pirate with a lobster claw hand. You won’t see that in “Attack on Titan.”
Perez told Fangoria what “Fear Force Five” is all about.

Slim Pickens was an actor known for One Eyed Jacks, Blazing Saddles and of course Dr Strangelove. What you get this week is not Pickens the actor iconically riding the bomb down to the ground in the Stanley Kubrick classic or any kind of online retrospective of his work, but slim pickings in terms of new streaming choices. So it’s Netflix’s time to shine….
Netflix has added more or less all of the low-key interesting independent films from last year with real gems like Safety Not Guaranteed and Maniac and even the lesser likes of Excision and Some Guy Who Kills People. It’s entirely possible that Lovefilm/Amazon is behind closed doors after last week’s Marvel/Netflix news, plotting something with DC comics but we will see…

We’re back with another Q&A feature, this time talking with Saturday Morning Mystery director Spencer Parsons, who tells us about growing up with Scooby-Doo, balancing horror and comedy, and his time on the set of the movie:
With this movie being Scooby-Doo influenced, can you tell me about your experience with Scooby-Doo as a child? What’s one of your favorite episodes?
Spencer Parsons: Oh yeah, when I was little, it was huge to me. My little brother and I would stay over at my grandmother’s house and wake up early to watch it with my older cousins while snarfing down sugary breakfast cereals my mom never let us have. By the time Jason of Star Command came on, I’d be flying high on Count Chocula, trying to get pony rides from the cocker spaniel. So I’d call it formative.

Director: Jack Perez. Review: Adam Wing. When you’re presented with a movie called ‘Some Guy Who Kills People’, a film directed by Jack Perez, the man behind Wild Things 2 and Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, hopes (quite naturally) aren’t high. From executive producer John Landis (American Werewolf in London), Some Guy stars Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick and our very own Lucy Davis (The Office). Low expectations can be a blessing in disguise but I should’ve had more faith because Some Guy is a darkly comic, ever-so-slightly stupid horror comedy with emphasis very much on the ‘c’ word. Ken Boyd (Corrigan) is a small-town loner who likes to draw, making ends meet at the local ice-cream parlour. Fresh out the loony bin, where he spent several years recovering from the horrific torture he suffered at the hands of the high school basketball jocks, Ken just wants to be left alone.

Perhaps the proper way to go about writing up this fascinating conversation between directors Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) and Jack Perez (The Big Empty, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus) is to do so after all seven parts have been released online. Unfortunately we're freakin' hooked after two parts of this thing, and we can't wait any longer. For their first 17 minutes, Carnahan and Perez primarily talk about the difficulties of shooting a big-budget movie in Hollywood and how the more money that's involved often limits the creative process. "You put an ungodly amount of pressure on someone, and I also think it's up to us as filmmakers to push back and say I don't want that responsibility," Carnahan says. "I don't want that...

Produced by John Landis, this low-budget semi-comic slasher flick provides a pair of likable veterans, Karen Black (star of Five Easy Pieces) and Barry Bostwick (Brad in The Rocky Horror Picture Show) with rough and unready roles as respectively the demented mother of a troubled man recently released from a state mental hospital and a county sheriff hunting a serial killer whose gruesomely dispatched victims are cluttering the neighbourhood. Black is poorly used, as she has been these past 25 years; Bostwick has his pawky moments. Wisely adopting the pseudonym "Ace Hannah", Perez directed the 2009 horror movie Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, a film only Ed Wood would have signed.

Liberal Arts (12A)
(Josh Radnor, 2012, Us) Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Richard Jenkins, 97 mins
University applications could well go into terminal decline as a result of this irritatingly winsome comedy, in which an archetypal New York slacker returns to his alma mater, meets an archetypal free-spirited young student (Olsen) and relives his lost youth of music, books and self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual chit chat. It's like Woody Allen without the wit.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (12A)

Life as a high-school outsider never looked so appealing as in this well-intentioned coming-of-ager, in which Lerman's loner is adopted by a band of bohemian outcasts. Watson's post-Potter moment is somewhat overshadowed by the flamboyant Miller.

★★☆☆☆ From director Jack Perez (the man behind 2009 creature feature Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus) and executive producer John Landis comes Some Guy Who Kills People (2011), an evocative if slightly misguided attempt to explore mental illness via the medium slasher/comedy generic hybrid. Starring Kevin Corrigan and The Office's Lucy Davis, Perez's latest is likeable enough - and a vast improvement on his previous outing - yet still fails to do anything more than brush the surface of its difficult chosen subject matter.

Movie fans are very thankfully for the internet, they may deny it at times but through it they have discovered films they never would have heard of and discovered the world of the independent movie. These films tend to gain attention through word of mouth, or words on screen and play festivals to try and get fans interest. Sometimes they are helped by bigger names in the industry that can get them attention just through a name, but mostly it’s that ability to catch the eye of the fans. 'Some Guy Who Kills People' Movie Review
Some Guy Who Kills People certainly lives up to its title, but it sure is more than just that. This film is to quite simply put it, fantastic! I enjoyed this film a lot; it is a clever blend of horror, comedy and family drama.
I had no idea what to expect from this one, I dove in blind and I came out with a huge smile on my face.
The story here is about Ken (a fantastic Kevin Corrigan), he’s a loner fresh out of the loony bin trying to get his life on track. We get the idea he ended up there from a horrific event caused by a group of guys, and thus it has left him very scarred in more ways than one. As Ken apparently runs into one of those...

Coming up with an original concept for a slasher film these days is an impossibility. So what can a budding filmmaker with an itch for violent deaths and twist endings do to make his project stand out from the rest of the Scream clones? Director Jack Perez decided to meld his gore-fest with a tween coming-of-age story. The result is a rather unique indie-flavored little film entitled Some Guy Who Kills People.
Ken Boyd (Kevin Corrigan) is fresh out of a mental institute. He's trying to put his grim past behind him, but the kids who sent him to the loony bin still enjoy tormenting him. Ken's best friend (Leo Fitzpatrick) gets him a job at the local ice cream shop. He soon begins a relationship with an English girl (Lucy Davis) new to town. Strange Beauty Film Festival
2013 will be starting off with a bang when the 4th annual Strange Beauty Film Festival rocks the Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, North Carolina on January 24-26.
Strange Beauty is a short films only festival that has two requirements. One: Films have to be 30 minutes long or less. Two: Films must be “strangely beautiful.” But, what does that mean exactly? In the fest’s words, they show:
Short fiction, documentary, experimental, animation, underground, funky, and otherwise wholly unclassifiable works that lie somewhere between terrifying normality and sublime fever dreams. We’re looking for movies that strike a nerve, shake us up, come back to haunt us.
Last year’s Strange Beauty is the first one we listed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film and we were thrilled to include it in our roster of fests we cover, especially with its powerhouse lineup of filmmakers.
2013 will be starting off with a bang when the 4th annual Strange Beauty Film Festival rocks the Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, North Carolina on January 24-26.

Poor Ken. After recently being released from a mental hospital after a suicide attempt, he is living with his mother and employed at a dead end job slinging ice cream. Ken is working a private birthday party, when his past comes back to haunt him after he is confronted by one of his high school bullies. Armed with a dark rage, he fantasizes about killing the guys who put him through hell all those years ago, and it’s not long before those fantasies become a reality.
With Some Guy Who Kills People, we are presented with a refreshing black comedy that has a pretty clever murder mystery tucked neatly inside. Director Jack Perez has a solid grasp on tone and manages to juggle genres quite well, never watering down the comedy for the sake of drama or the horror for the sake of comedy. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by writer Ryan A. Levin. Director: Jack Perez. Writer: Ryan A. Levin. Cast: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Eric Price, Lucy Davis, and Lou Beatty Jr. Some Guy Who Kills People is a successful film primarily for combining so many genres. Genres noted by this reviewer included: comedy, horror, revenge thriller, romance and family. It is hard for some filmmakers to nail one genre. Writer Ryan A. Levin, director Jack Perez and the rest of the crew bring six genres to life. There are a lot of layers here. There is also a lot of murder. Part serial killer film, Some Guy Who Kills People is more about the humanness of relationships and the struggles inherently therein. The story follows Kenny (Kevin Corrigan). He has recently been released from a psychiatric ward for depression and suicidal tendencies.

Some Guy Who Kills People will be released on DVD this week and I recently talked with director Jack Perez about the making of the movie. Continue reading to learn about how he ended up taking over as director for John Landis, his contributions to the script, and putting together a strong ensemble cast.
How did you first get involved on this project and end up taking over as director for John Landis?
Jack Perez: I didn’t know that Landis had been attached to direct the movie when I first saw the script. Ryan Levin had sent him the script and he said he had wanted to direct it. Then he got the opportunity to direct Burke and Hare, which was a pet project that he had wanted to make for a long time. He very kindly stepped away and stayed on as an executive producer, but wanted to find a new director.

Already, at age 15, actress Ariel Gade has managed to make quite a name for herself inside and out of the genre world, and Dread Central had the opportunity to chat briefly with her about her most recent project: Some Guy Who Kills People
Ever since making her debut on television at the young age of 6, Gade has gone on to co-star in films like Envy, Dark Water and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and portrayed youngster Rose Varon in the cult classic ABC TV series "Invasion." In Jack Perez's dark comedy Some Guy Who Kills People she appears as precocious tweener Amy Wheeler, who not only discovers she has a dad (Kevin Corrigan) but also figures out that he very well could be the killer behind a string of grisly murders in their small town.

Kevin Corrigan is pretty awesome. However, I didn’t fully understand this until I saw director Jack Perez’s immensely entertaining horror/comedy “Some Guy Who Kills People”. Corrigan stars as a serial killer who learns he has a daughter, a discovery that slowly begins to have a positive effect on his life. The film is smart, funny, and, on occasion, effectively maudlin. I really can’t recommend it enough. Fortunately for everyone, it’s finally coming to DVD this July. Ken Boyd just wants to get his life back on track. Having just been released from a mental asylum, he moves back in with his mom and gets a good — if a bit demeaning — job at an ice cream parlor. And he dishes out a ruthless, brutal and bloody revenge against all those he deems responsible for his own lousy station in life.
Some Guy Who Kills People is a black comedy directed by Jack Perez and is executive produced by John Landis. Kevin Corrigan stars as Ken and his mom is played by B-movie legend Karen Black. Also appearing in the film are Barry Bostwick as the inept sheriff on Ken’s trail and Ariel Gade as the daughter Ken never knew he had.

The 14th annual Boston Underground Film Festival is ready to kick ass and take names on March 29 to April 1 at the Brattle Theatre. And a few of those names will look familiar to Buff fanatics — and underground film fans the world over.
A trio of Buff favorites are returning to the fest with debut feature films after totally killing it with their amazing short films in the past. Jamie Heinrich‘s Happily Never After is a feature-length expansion of the short film that took home the Best of Fest Award in 2010, but with more solid and mature themes as the movie explores the problematic life of a degenerate photographer.
