A movie with the title “Maxine’s Baby” brings with it certain expectations; namely, that it will help you learn something, anything of substance regarding a person named Maxine. The new documentary from directors Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz does not fulfill that promise. Maxine in the film is Willie Maxine Perry, and the baby is her son, Tyler Perry. Over the course of its too-long one-hour and 55-minute runtime, “Maxine’s Baby” shares a grand total of maybe three facts about Perry’s mother: 1) she was married to an abusive man, 2) she was religious, and 3) she died in 2009. Any real meat about who she was as a person is cast aside in favor of picture montages and in-the-moment interviews where Perry discusses his love for his Maxine, and how she shaped him into the artist he is today. These sections universally go down like a wafer cookie: sweet but...

Ultra-prolific writer-director, fiercely independent producer, pioneering entrepreneur, self-made studio chief. Any and all of these labels apply to Tyler Perry, though the one the boundary-obliterating multi-hyphenate chooses for himself is “Maxine’s Baby” — the same moniker that documentary duo Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz opted to give their motivational profile of Perry, who comes off disarmingly humble for someone who’s achieved so much. While not quite hagiography, the worshipful project is so committed to touting Perry’s accomplishments that it takes the rare step of counting his agents and publicist (whose actual job it is to hype him) among its adoring sources.
Early on, Perry’s plays and films served both to inspire and provide moral example, heavy-handedly addressing topics — such as infidelity, drug addiction and child sexual abuse — that Black audiences were more accustomed to hearing about in church than on the big screen. Today, with two dozen...

In 2002, Halle Berry and Denzel Washington famously became the first African American performers to win lead acting Oscars in the same year (and still the only time ever). Berry was the first woman of color ever to win Best Actress (for “Monster’s Ball”) and only the third ever in any acting category, following supporting victors Hattie McDaniel for “Gone with the Wind” (1940) and Whoopi Goldberg for “Ghost” (1991) a half-century later. For Washington, his triumph for “Training Day” was his second Academy Award statuette (following a 1990 supporting win for “Glory”) and just the fifth ever for a Black male actor.
March 24, 2002 proved to be something of a magical night. Not only did Berry and Washington cap the night with wins, but Sidney Poitier, who won the first trophy for an African American male actor with his lead victory in 1964 for “Lilies of the Field,” was bequeathed an honorary award “for his...

The official trailer for John Wick 4 has everything you could possibly want out of a teaser for an entry in the blockbuster franchise. There are stunning action sequences, plenty of Keanu Reeves, and witty repartee including Winston (Ian McShane) offering helpful last words to John as he heads into battle. “Just have fun out there,” says Winston, which pretty much sums up the hopes of John Wick fans for the fourth film of the saga.
Laurence Fishburne, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, and Scott Adkins join Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane for the fourth chapter of the John Wick franchise. Chad Stahelski, director of the three previous John Wick films, is back at the helm, and Shay Hatten and Michael Finch wrote the screenplay.
Director Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee produce, with Keanu Reeves, Louise Rosner, David Leitch, and Michael Paseornek executive produce.

We have some quickie news coming in for I, Frankenstein. Sitcom favorite Yvonne Strahovski ("Chuck", Killer Elite) recently offered hungry fans a little insight as to whom she'll be playing in the flick and whether or not she'll continue to keep you in stitches.
"I'm flying in a couple of weeks to Australia to shoot another movie with Aaron Eckhart, which I'm really excited about, called I, Frankenstein," she tells MovieWeb. "It's going to be sort of an action-drama-romance type movie. I play a scientist, and I think I'm changing up my accent. I'm going to be British in this one, which is nice for a change. I've been an American for so many years now (laughs). It's kind of a modern take on the original (Frankenstein) story. There will be some romantic elements, I think it's safe to say that much."

Two more names are being bandied about as potential cast members of I, Frankenstein, one of the many Frankenstein projects in various stages of production, and we have to admit that with these additions this film is shaping up quite nicely. This past summer a report came out saying that Mark Heyman, one of the writers of Black Swan, was shopping around a new drama called Xoxo. Similar to Fatal Attraction, the basic description of the plot was about a young man who begins flirting with a girl on Facebook who ends up becoming obsessed with him. Today the project took a major leap forward and more details about the story have been revealed. According to Variety, Xoxo has been picked up by Lionsgate and heads of production Alli Shearmur and Mike Paseornek have been assigned the project (Darren Aronofsky and Michael London are also still signed on as producers). Building on the plot description above - and actually describing the script as "Fatal Attraction for the digital age" - apparently the protagonist is both engaged and an "on-the-rise" executive who likes occasionally taking part in online flirting through Facebook. Arnold Schwarzenegger's fast and furious return to the big screen is currently getting underway. The former Governor of California has targeted director Kim Jee-Woon's "The Last Stand" as his first star vehicle since returning to acting, and he won't be alone — he'll have some very notable co-stars joining him for the ride.
Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and "Jackass" host Johnny Knoxville have boarded the cast of "Last Stand," an impressive roster of actors that already includes "Thor" star Jaimie Alexander, "300" villain Rodrigo Santoro and the inimitable Peter Stormare of "Fargo" fame. Also joining the cast is Harry Dean Stanton, perhaps most recently best known for playing the creepy Roman Grant on HBO's "Big Love," but forever in my heart for his ill-fated turn as Brett in Ridley Scott's "Alien."
No specifics on who these new cast members are playing just yet, so we can only speculate for now.

Along with that is the announcement of a few actors who are part of the film, including Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, and one of my personal faves, Harry Dean Stanton. Here's the press release. The final paragraph is the one to skip to if you just want the plot synopsis; sadly it doesn't have any new info about what characters...

After first hearing about I, Frankenstein several months ago, a press release from Lionsgate now informs us that the project is moving forward with Aaron Eckhart in the lead. Based on the graphic novel by Underworld‘s Kevin Grevioux, it follows Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, Adam, who has survived to the modern day because of “a genetic quirk in his creation.” Ending up in a “dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.” As writer and director Stuart Beattie summed it up, “Mary Shelly’s story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human.”
I’m looking forward to how Eckhart will pull off a character like Frankenstein — and, similarly, how they’ll portray him onscreen. The lumbering beast of James Whale‘s 1931 film deviates from Shelley‘s original novel; Frankenstein...

The Nurse 3D poster has premiered. Douglas Aarniokoski‘s Nurse 3-D (2012) movie poster stars Paz De La Huerta. Nurse 3-D (2012) plot synopsis: “a pseudo-sensual horror film directed by Douglas Aarniokoski about an average nurse [named Abby] who spends her nights “targeting and punishing” evil men. So think Dexter with more breasts.”
What is being called pre-production concept art, the photo for the movie poster comes from V Magazine and was taken by Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen, “an avid photographer who’s also behind all the Saw marketing campaigns and made that fantastically gory Guts photobook, too.” Nudity is nothing new to Paz De La Huerta as she is regularly naked on Boardwalk Empire and had multiple nude scenes in Enter the Void. “The film stars shooting in September for a 2012 release but Lionsgate has released a concept photo that they say will ‘serve as a style guide and character inspiration for all stages of filmmaking.

Apparently, 3D and nudity go together like popcorn and soda. Just ask the team behind Sex and Zen 3D, a massive blockbuster [1] from Hong Kong that uses sex to sell the third dimension. And while that film is supposed to hit North American shores [2] at some point, Lionsgate is also embracing the concept...and dripping blood all over its naked body. They've cast Paz De La Huerta, the regularly naked star of Enter the Void and Boardwalk Empire, in Nurse 3D, a pseudo-sensual horror film directed by Douglas Aarniokoski about an average nurse who spends her nights "targeting and punishing" evil men. So think Dexter with more breasts. This is Nsfw to say the least. This may be shocking, but the first concept art, coupled with the announcement of the feature film Nurse 3D, features a naked Paz De La Huerta. This is the same actress from Boardwalk Empire and Enter the Void, where she also likes to appear completely nude. As for the film, it is described as a psycho-sexul thriller in which “a beautiful, dedicated nurse with a sinister side, and a secret life’s work targets and punishes dishonest men.”
It is being directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, the first assistant director from films such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Takers. I hope it can elevate beyond just “that film that Paz De La Huerta runs around naked and kills people in.” Who am I kidding, that will be great. For the protection of our readers, check out the concept art past the...

So uh, this is new. This poster just seemed to pop up from out of nowhere. But this is a concept poster for a new film from Lionsgate called Nurse 3D. The woman in the poster is Paz De La Huerta (Boardwalk Empire and Enter the Void fame). She will play a character named Abby Russell in the film. Abby is the central in the story which is described as “psycho-sexual” 3D thriller.
The film will be directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, and is apparently inspired by the "fantastical, sado-masochistic nurses" photographs of Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen, "a well-known tastemaker within the horror genre—and the photographer behind the image above."
Lionsgate President of Production, Mike Paseornek had this to say,

Here's the official Lionsgate announcement of my scoop from Monday: that Arnold Schwarzenegger has booked his first film since his personal scandal broke. Interesting factoid, however: the studio execs who read the script told me it was an oater -- but it's not. "It was miscommunicated to you that the film is a Western (although it has that classic feel for sure with Arnold as a Sheriff!)," a very apologetic insider now says. "It’s more of a Fast And Furious at the border with high speed car chases, drug cartels and the like." Jeez, you mean we don't get to see Arnold on a horse in a cowboy hat drawling like Jeff Bridges?
