A pair of actors who hail from Cannes Film Festival award-winning projects — Anamaria Marinca (Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and Jean-Marc Barr (Lars Von Trier’s Europa) — are teaming to star in a new film that marks an official collaboration between France and Ireland.
The project is White Friar and will mark the feature directorial debut of actor-turned-filmmaker Ivan Murphy. Described as a romantic thriller, White Friar is inspired by the life of Father Tom Murphy, an Irish Catholic priest who also served as a wing commander in the Royal Air Force during WWII and his relationship with Eva Hofer, a Hungarian Jew living in Vienna. Per the official synopsis, the film “examines morality, sexuality and identity.”

John Lennon has to make the shortlist when discussing the most famous Liverpool natives. He relocated to London and later moved to the United States, but he spent his formative years in the English port city. City leaders showed their love for John by immortalizing The Beatles founder in statue form at Liverpool Airport on March 15, 2002.

As we stroll on Disney’s historic Burbank lot toward the plaza where he is about to be photographed in front of a statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse holding hands, I ask Iger if he is feeling melancholy about his decision to leave.
“I’m being resolute about it — this time around. I haven’t once second-guessed it or hesitated,” he tells me. “It’s bittersweet. I’m going to miss people, and I’m going to miss the creative process.” Iger, who turns 71 in February and who began his career at age 23 at ABC, is one of only six CEOs to lead Disney since its founding in 1923 until Bob Chapek assumed the role in February 2020.
Ten days from now, Iger can step away knowing that few, if any, media leaders can claim as impressive a track record at any one enterprise as he achieved over his time...

The reminders came often from Sumner Redstone, self-made architect of a vast media empire.
“Viacom is me,” he once told Fortune magazine. “I’m Viacom. That marriage is eternal, forever.”
“I’m in control!” he chided Mel Karmazin in a nationally televised news conference as the executive tried to outline his vision for the newly merged Viacom and CBS. “Remember — I’m in control!”
The late Frank Biondi Jr., who engineered a series of key deals in the 1980s and ’90s as Viacom CEO, once acknowledged to the New Yorker‘s Ken Auletta that it could be frustrating toiling in semi-obscurity. “Sumner is the embodiment of this place,” he shrugged.
Redstone, who died Wednesday at age 97, personified more than just a single company. He came to represent a media and entertainment era when deeply flawed, nakedly ambitious, larger-than-life personalities single-handedly set the agenda.

Disney came close to buying Twitter in 2016. Michael Eisner made an impassioned pitch to the Disney board to block Bob Iger’s acquisition of Pixar. In the mid-1980s, Iger almost joined ICM as a sports agent.
Those are some of the intriguing revelations in Iger’s new book “The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company.” Iger describes the book as not so much a memoir as an effort to share the knowledge and leadership skills he’s gained after more than 45 years in the trenches, starting out at ABC in 1974 and at Disney since 1995.
Iger’s book is liveliest in the passages discussing the big transactions that have transformed Disney on his watch: the acquisition of Pixar in 2006, followed by Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012. He also explains the reasoning behind his famous regimen of waking at 4:15 a.m.

Bob Dylan has recorded a song for a compilation Ep with a same-sex love theme called “Universal Love.” Dylan’s contribution to the six-song Ep, which also features Kesha, St. Vincent, Ben Gibbard, Valerie June and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke, comes with a characteristic twist: Reflecting his recent covers-heavy albums, he’s covered the 1929 song “She’s Funny That Way” with the lyrical variation “He’s Funny That Way.” News of the Ep, which is released Friday (April 6), was first reported by The New York Times.
Dylan is not the first to alter the pronoun in the song — which has been covered by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Etta James, Liza Minelli, Nat King Cole and many others since it was featured in the 1931 film “Gems of MGM” — but the point is made.

If you watch Secrets & Lies on ABC then the biggest question on your mind is Who Killed Tom Murphy? Everyone has their own theories but not everyone gets a chance to sit down with a key cast member to discuss them. I recently had the the pleasure of interviewing Dan Fogler about the Kickstarter campaign for his new comic book Brooklyn Gladiator. Dan expertly plays the role of Dave Lindsey, who adds some much-needed moments of levity while also providing some tense dramatic story beats. After discussing Dan’s comic, I brought up my theory of who I think killed Tom. Dan’s reaction might reveal just a little too much. Watch for yourself and let us know what you think. #DidDaveKillTom?

ABC‘s Secrets & Lies gives away the main thrust of the story with the gimmick itself, leaving the ten-episode dramatic effort to keep viewers interested with… well, all the secrets and lies. The trick here being that some of them aren’t actually either.
Similar to such popular, recent efforts as Broadchurch (Gracepoint), this is another reworking of a foreign show. This one, like The Slap, an effort from Australia.
The show opens with Ben Crawford (Ryan Phillippe) sprinting out of the woods to get help after he finds the body of a small boy, Tom Murphy. Tom was not just his neighbor’s son, but a boy Ben knew well, as his daughter regularly babysat him.
As might be expected (from TV DramaLand), Detective Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis) asks Ben a lot of questions that don’t exactly sound routine, and more or less acts as though she has...

A couple have gotten away with having sex outside a restaurant. Jeremie Calo and Tiffani Lynn Barganier - both aged 32 - were getting physical on top of a restaurant table in Orlando, Florida, not bothered by the presence of parents and children. The restaurant manager Tom Murphy attempted to intervene at first when the scene was happening on Monday early evening (October 29), reports The Smoking Gun. However, he was told by Calo that his girlfriend "[couldn't] get up at this time". Murphy threatened to call the police, demanding the man to "compose himself" and (more)...

It's been a good year for playwright and director Mike Bartlett. Love, Love, Love played at the Royal Court and his adaptation of Chariots Of Fire is currently at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End (to 10 Nov). This latest play, which he also directs, is something very different: Euripides's tale of a woman scorned who takes her revenge on her ex-husband in the most appalling way is one of the greatest and most enduring of Greek tragedies. Now it's reinvented for the modern age in Bartlett's new version about a 21st-century woman who is unhinged by grief when her husband, for whom she has given up everything, leaves her for another woman. The excellent Rachael Stirling is in the title role in a production for Headlong, which will be touring to major venues across the UK until December.

New York -- To play Macbeth is no mere task. Nor is portraying Lady Macbeth or Macduff or even Duncan. Undaunted, Alan Cumming is trying them all – at the same time.
The Tony-winning Scotsman is playing all the roles in Shakespeare's tragedy, an Olympic feat of both endurance and gender-bending. All three witches? Cumming. He's also Banquo and Lady Macduff, for good measure.
"It's truly the most difficult thing I've ever done," says Cumming, who has rather outrageously ended up doing his one-man "Macbeth" in New York while also filming the fourth season of CBS' "The Good Wife."
The production, which started in Scotland in mid-June before coming to New York for the next few days as part of the Lincoln Center Festival, is being undertaken under the watchful eyes of directors John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg. That's right: There are more directors than lead actors.

New York -- Mikhail Baryshnikov, Cate Blanchett and Alan Cumming will be among the stars in this summer's Lincoln Center Festival.
The festival announced Wednesday that the offerings will include Baryshnikov in the new play "In Paris" and Blanchett in the Sydney Theatre Company's production of "Uncle Vanya." Cumming will star in the National Theatre of Scotland's one-person "Macbeth."
There will be a total of 72 performances by artists and ensembles from seven countries, running from July 5 through Aug. 5. The shows will be held in seven venues on and off the Lincoln Center campus.
Kaija Saariaho's "Emile," an 80-minute opera starring soprano Elizabeth Futral, will be given three performances in July. The monodrama, which premiered at the Opera de Lyon in France two years ago, is based on Emilie du Chatelet, Voltaire's mistress.
A one-night-only event on July 20 will pay tribute to Curtis Mayfield, who would have been 70 this year.

At Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud theatre, playwright David Seidler has much more room to explore the story's historical background than the cinema version allowed
Watching David Seidler's play induces a strong sense of deja vu. That's not simply because it was the source of a hugely successful, Oscar-winning film. It is also because Seidler's perfectly enjoyable play taps into our recollections of other, more resonant works.
Until I saw it on stage, I had not realised how much Seidler's piece owed to Alan Bennett's The Madness of George III. In both we see an embattled royal subjected to all kinds of curative humiliations by a rogue outsider: in Bennett's play it was a bluff Lincolnshire parson whereas in Seidler's it is a tough Aussie speech specialist in the shape of Lionel Logue. I was also reminded of Tom Murphy's outstanding 1983 play, The Gigli Concert, in which a charlatan...

Cue that music: The Oscar-winning 1980 drama Chariots of Fire will get an entirely new kind of run. New York — Daniel Burke, a media industry veteran who helped create Capital Cities/ABC Inc. before it was sold to The Walt Disney Co., has died of complications from diabetes. He was 82.
Burke, along with Tom Murphy, built Capital Cities from a television station in Albany, N.Y., into a company with newspapers, magazines and TV and radio operations.
With Warren Buffett's backing, Capital Cities Communications bought ABC for $3.5 billion in 1986, in what was then the largest non-oil company merger in corporate history.
After helping merge the two companies, Burke was elevated to CEO, where he remained until he retired in February 1994 on his 65th birthday.
Disney bought Capital Cities/ABC for $19 billion in 1996.
Burke's son, Steve Burke, a former president of ABC, is now the CEO of Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal.

In addition to being a pioneering broadcaster, Daniel Burke was the father of NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke. Investor Warren Buffett — who was on the Capital Cities board — once said that having a company run by Daniel Burke and his partner Tom Murphy was “like having Ruth and Gehrig in the same lineup.” Here’s the official announcement of Burke’s passing: Daniel B. Burke, 82, who served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., from 1990 until his retirement in 1994, and who was President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company from 1972, died at his home on Wednesday, October 26th, in Rye, N.Y. Mr. Burke, whose distinguished media industry leadership spanned broadcasting, cable and publishing, joined Capital Cities in 1961 as General Manager of Wten-tv in Albany. He was elected a Vice President of the Company in 1962 and, in 1964, was appointed General Manager of Wjr-am/FM in Detroit.

Murphy’s Law makes no qualms about being quality television, a grim and proper police procedural that doesn’t sympathize or moralize either the cop or the crook. I had not seen the prior two series’ but that didn’t prove to be an issue – Series 3 is insular, covering a single investigation led by one Thomas Murphy (a scruffy though not disheveled James Nesbitt). Murphy is a career cop whose specialty is undercover work, a task he executes capably, with frequent improvisation aided by a razor-sharp intelligence. The quality of the show seemingly feeds of Murphy’s skill in the field, with six hour-long episodes carefully balancing character development with the suspense inherent in undercover investigations.
The series begins with a routine gun sale, Murphy posing as an experienced dealer in order to score a meeting with Caz Miller (Michael Fassbender). When Murphy learns that the gun is to be used for a hit,...

Former Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner calls his 1995 decision to buy CapCities/ABC "one of the best acquisitions maybe of that whole century," particularly because it included sports powerhouse Espn.
"We spent the $19 billion because we wanted Espn," he told the Associated Press in an interview otherwise centered on Tuesday's release of his book "Working Together: Why Great Partnerships Succeed."
According to Eisner, 68, he met then-cbs Corp. CEO Larry Tisch and CapCities/ABC CEO Tom Murphy and had to decide which broadcaster to buy.
