If there’s one thing you can count on in a Ryuhei Kitamura horror film, it’s the copious amounts of bloodshed and gore. With Kitamura, gore is most definitely an artform. Based on Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name, 2008 film The Midnight Meat Train follows a photographer obsessed with dark subject matter. He gets in over his head when he discovers a serial killer that butchers unsuspecting night commuters in grisly fashion.
There’s probably not many movies as aptly titled as this one. There’s a lot of human meat, blood, brain matter, and limbs being carved up on the late-night subway train in this horror movie. Bradley Cooper stars as Leon Kaufman, the photographer that stumbles upon and then becomes obsessed with the ruthless serial killer. His concerned girlfriend Maya, a character not in the original story, is played by Leslie Bibb. But the...

Friends of Oscar-winning makeup artist Greg Cannom have set up a GoFundMe page after major health issues and setbacks have led to soaring medical bills.
Cannom, whose career spans over four decades and is a mastermind in prosthetics, has been nominated for 14 Oscars. He has won four Oscars in best hair and makeup for his work on “Dracula,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Vice.”
So far, over $21,000 has been raised as Cannom suffers from poor health and is no longer able to work and care for himself. According to the GoFundMe, Cannom’s health issues began with shingles, which resulted in permanent nerve damage to his lower legs, making walking difficult and painful. A Staph infection on his ankle never healed properly and spread to his foot, leading to a partial amputation.Late last year, Cannom’s health deteriorated and he remains in the hospital.

March is a busy month for makeup designer Mike Marino. First, “The Batman” has just opened in theaters, featuring Marino’s acclaimed work on the face and body of the Penguin, played by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell. And on March 27, Marino will be attending the Oscars as a first-time nominee (alongside colleagues Stacey Morris and Carla Farmer) for his work on “Coming 2 America.”
With this year marking the 40th anniversary of the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars, TheWrap reached out to Marino to commemorate the milestone by listing his five favorite makeup accomplishments of all time.
“I’m not against computer work and CGI and all that,” the New Jersey-based Marino said, “but there are certain things psychologically that makeup does, which is so vital to the inner workings of both the character and the actor. It’s a mistake to replace real practical makeup, even if it can be replaced.

The films up for the 2021 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Emma,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show that “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) is favored to win, followed in order by “Hillbilly Elegy” (4/1), “Pinocchio” (4/1), “Mank” (9/2), and “Emma” (9/2).
Mark Coulier (“Pinocchio”) has already won this award twice for his work in “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2015). He is now one of 18 makeup artists to be nominated by the academy at least three times. If he prevails on this outing, he will tie Ve Neill’s record for third most wins in this category, after Rick Baker (seven) and Greg Cannom (four).
Two members of the “Hillbilly Elegy” team are also previous winners. Patricia Denahey brought home a trophy for “Vice” two years ago, while Matthew W. Mungle did so for “Dracula” in 1993. Mungle later reaped bids for his work in “Schindler’s List...

January 19th has some really unique home entertainment releases that should make fans of cult cinema happier than Jason Voorhees on the first day of summer camp. Scream Factory is debuting William Friedkin’s The Guardian on Blu-ray this week and one of my personal favorites from my childhood, The Ice Pirates, is also getting an HD overhaul, courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection.
Vinegar Syndrome is also keeping themselves busy with a duo of cult classic releases, Nightmare Weekend and Luther the Geek, and for those of you sci-fi TV fans, season one of 12 Monkeys as well as the final season of Continuum arrive on Blu and DVD this Tuesday as well.

Last week, before the 2015 "New Girl" premiere, I posted my interviews with Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson from the Clyde's Bar set on the Fox Lot. I didn't want to burn anybody out on conversations about the new "New Girl" credits, so I held off on posting my interview with Max Greenfield, only to realize that one of the arcs he teases in our conversation debuted last week. So "New Girl" viewers have already seen the start of the relationship between Schmidt and Zoe Lister Jones' marvelously named local politico Fawn Moscato. Feel free to pretend like you haven't seen the first flickerings of that romance. In the conversation, Greenfield and I discussed Schmidt's detour into Evil Schmidt for parts of last season, as well as the current sweet friendship between Schmidt and Cece. We also talked a bit about the process of becoming Fat Schmidt and his secret...

Spoiler alert: The Nov. 11 episode of Sons of Anarchy found Jax taking the expression "an eye for an eye" literally: After ambushing Moses (Mathew St. Patrick) and his men, he ripped out Moses' eyeball, which dangled out of its socket. (Chibs then cut off Moses' fingers before Jax put a bullet in his head, mirroring the fate Bobby had suffered.) The eye was stomach-turning and awesome, which is why we asked Sons' head of makeup Tracey Anderson how she did it. First, she got a stock hanging eyeball and eye socket from W.M. Creations, Oscar and Emmy winner Matthew W. Mungle's company.

Makeup is an integral part of movies and television: it has the power to transform, and play with the mind of the audience in the same way as CGI and other effects can, and as such it is rightly rewarded every year when the major awards come around.
It can be used to make an actor look like a totally different person; as a collective audience, we have fostered a cinematic environment in which familiarity tends to be rewarded – we go and see sequels in droves, we flock to films based on star quality or the draw of a familiar director, and, though we may grumble, we all buy tickets for the latest remake event. So anything that can transform something familiar so well as an actor wearing a complex make-up piece should be heralded, even in the most basic terms.
And in more specialist terms, make-up can make a man look like a female,...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.

"Hugo" took home the most awards with five, but it didn't earn any of the big awards. "The Artist" took home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, while Best Actress (in a bit of a surprise, considering Viola Davis' previous wins) went to Meryl Streep, and the Supporting awards went to Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer, both of which have won all awards season.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help.

Attendees at the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Symposium, held Saturday afternoon in Beverly Hills by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science (AMPAS), were in for a major surprise: a visit by Oscar Best Actress nominees Glenn Close and Meryl Streep.
Both leading ladies gave us an inside look at what it was like portraying Albert Nobbs and Margaret Thatcher, The Iron Lady.
On stage with the Oscar nominees for Best Makeup Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. Mungle, Close revealed that the work to create Albert Nobbs - the story of a 19th century Irish woman who spent her life working as a man - started three years before shooting took place.

I am live-blogging the 84th Annual Academy Awards, I will begin when Billy Crystal walks out on stage. Why am I doing this? I watch the Oscars, therefore I know how boring it can be. I will have my laptop on hand so I figure I will bring some praise and cynicism to the party.

Matthew W. Mungle sounds like he could be Harry Potter’s clumsy maternal uncle -- a Muggle who’s prone to bungling things.
But Mungle is actually a real man -- a makeup artist -- and, far from aligning with the Potter universe, he’s competing against it. Tonight, Mungle will square off against “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “The Iron Lady,” and he’s steeling himself for a loss.
“I may be stepping out of my realm in saying this,” Mungle said. “But I think the Academy members go for the obvious in our category. They may go for my work on ‘Albert Nobbs,’ but they may not. They don’t really know how hard it is for us to do something so simple and yet so transformative as to put a nose on a face and blend it in so you don’t see it for an entire movie.

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in .A Better Life.
George Clooney in .The Descendants.
Jean Dujardin in .The Artist.
Gary Oldman in .Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Brad Pitt in .Moneyball.
Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.
Possible upset – Brad Pitt is an all around good guy...

The Academy’s Oscar Week culminated in a sold-out public event at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater celebrating the achievement of the nominees in the Hair and Makeup category hosted by Branch Governor Leonard Engelman. This is one of my favorite symposiums of Oscar Week and AMPAS really outdid themselves this year when they surprised the audience with the appearances of Meryl Streep and Glenn Close. Met with standing ovations, the actresses spent a lot of time on Saturday in support of the Hair and Makeup nominees behind The Iron Lady and Albert Nobbs. Close, Streep and the teams discussed the colloborative processes and presented film clips, photographs and models of their work.

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland reaped their first Best Makeup bid for transforming Meryl Streep into Margaret Thatcher at various ages from her forties to her eighties in "The Iron Lady." Four years ago, the makeup artists who turned Marion Cotillard into Edith Piaf for "La Vie en Rose" won this award. None of the first seven films in the "Harry Potter" merited mention in this category. That does not bode well for the chances of first-time contenders Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight and Lisa Tomblin. The 84th Academy Awards will pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. (1902). Even Marilyn Monroe is being honored via a Best Actress nomination for Michelle Williams who played the icon in .My Week with Marilyn..

The Irish certainly took to Close’s performance as a Dublin manservant in “Albert Nobbs,” rewarding the actress with the Irish Film And Television Academy’s best international actress award Saturday evening. Hollywood veteran Glenn Close turned to the Albanian culture of "sworn virgins" to perfect her look as a man for new film Albert Nobbs.
The actress underwent a drastic movie makeover to portray the title character - a woman who disguises herself as a male to work as a hotel waiter in 19th century Ireland.
Her stunning transformation helped Close land an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and she admits her convincing appearance in the film is modelled on an old picture she saw in a magazine article about the unusual eastern European culture.
Speaking on U.S. talk show The View on Wednesday, she explains, "The challenge of doing a part like this on film is that you have a close-up and the close-up is very revealing, so it was a question of devising, through rigorous hair and make-up tests, what the face of a woman would look like if she had been basically embedded as a waiter for 30 years.
"Actually I had this picture of a woman from Albania from the National Geographic; I got it in 2002. There is a culture where, if a family doesn't have a male heir, they designate a woman to act and live a life as a man; they're called sworn virgins. I had the face of this woman that I was fascinated by all these years and I thought, 'You know, the eyes, the hairline, the ears, all that...'"
Close's Albert Nobbs transformation has also earned Clare Lambe and Matthew Mungle an Academy Award nomination for Make-Up.

This morning, Jennifer Lawrence and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. The winners will be announced during the televised ceremony on February 26, 2012. Let’s get right into the nominations:
Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Snubs:
Bridesmaids
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Ides of March
50/50
Shame
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
The Artist and The Descendants may stack up on top alphabetically, but they’re neatly placed in this two-horse race with the B&W, silent era drama in the easy lead. An upset is possible, I suppose, but a Descendants win would be more upsetting since its one of the weakest in Payne’s career. Extremely Loud & Yada Yada comes as a huge surprise though. Chock it...

Update (January 30, 2012): Australian producer Grant Hill is one of four producers that will accept the Oscar should Terence Malick's Tree of Life win Best Picture. The film's nominees were originally listed as 'to be determined', following the Academy's decision that only a maximum of three producers would be recognised per best picture contender.
It was decided on Friday that Tree of Life represented 'extraordinary circumstances' and the rule was waived. Should the film upset popular contenders Hugo and The Artist, the Oscar will be accepted by Hill alongside fellow producers Sarah Green, Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner.
Correction: Sound re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, who received his thirteen nomination for best achievement in sound for Steven Spielberg's War Horse, is in fact British. In 2001, Nelson received an Australian Centenary Medal for his services to Australian film production for his work on Moulin Rouge.

It’s a veritable Christmas morning for Hollywood today, as at 5 Am, a small, exclusive lucky group of folks were awoken to telephone calls congratulating them on their Oscar nominations. Ah yes, the Academy Awards, America’s most cherished ass kissing festival, where celebrities get showered with gifts, attention, fine foods and good wine, while we sit in our dimly lit offices shoveling the same mixed salad we’ve been eating every day for years into our mouths despite the fact that somehow we seem to be gaining weight. (Too personal, I digress. Snap out of it! — Cher) Anyway, today is that day of initial glee so many lucky folks in Hollywood will awake to. And then, of course, you have those that get famously snubbed. Ignored. Overlooked. Forgotten. No giftbag for you. Charlize Theron in Young Adult? Ryan Gosling???? You better Drive your ass out of here cause you...

Its that time of the year again in when everyone prepares their Oscar predictions, because let’s be honest for a moment – the best part of the Oscars is placing your bets on who’ll win and hopefully walking away from a long and usually boring ceremony with some extra cash in your pocket. This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards with no major surprises but instead, a long list of snubs. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is the surprise leader of the 2012 Academy Award nominations with 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director. The Artist followed with 10 nominations. Here are my predictions of who I feel will take home gold come Sunday February 26, as well as those films and talent who I believe were snubbed.

HollywoodNews.com: Best Picture nominees: The Artist, The Help, The Descendants, War Horse, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, Hugo, and the big surprise–Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Not nominated: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Bridesmaids. Other big shocks–Albert Brooks was not nominated for “Drive,” which is s a shame in the Best Supporting Actor category. His spot went to Max von Sydow in “Extremely.” Another big shock — “Tintin” was not nominated for Best Animated Feature. This is actually shocking. Leonardo DiCaprio was not nominated for “J Edgar” in Best Actor–his spot went to Damien Bachir in “A Better Place.” The other actor nominees were George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jean DuJardin, and Gary Oldman for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The latter film did much better than anyone could have guessed. It’s that special time of year when the line is drawn in the sand between moviegoers and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which revealed the nominees for the 84th Academy Awards earlier today, because there’s always disagreement over who got the nod and who got the shaft. Hit the jump to see if your favorites made the cut.
I haven’t seen many of the films on the list (Oscar and I rarely see eye-to-eye) but I am shocked that a few names are missing. Michael Fassbender, who seemed to own 2011, isn’t anywhere to be found? TinTin isn’t up for Best Animated Film? Drive gets a nod for sound editing and nothing else? Someone really got shafted there.
You can check out the list below and then find out who takes the little guy named Oscar home on Sunday, February 26, on ABC.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and I'm happy with the outcome. The one compliant I have is that Michael Shannon wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his role in Take Shelter. In my opinion that was the best performance I've seen all year. Andy Serkis also didn't get his nomination for playing Ceaser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Hugo led the pack with 11 solid nominations, followed by The Artist with 10. Both Moneyball and War Horse nabbed six, and The Descendants and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ended up with five, but Fincher got snubbed for Best Director.

Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Brace yourselves for the surprises and omissions. The nominees were a little more than crazy this year to say the least – nine best picture nominees! This year’s balloting rules allowed for the possibility of between five and ten Best Picture nominees, and for the first time in Academy history, nine films have been nominated in that category.
Now for the shockers. No Michael Fassbender in the Best Actor category…no Albert Brooks in Best Supporting Actor category…no Adventures Of Tintin or Cars 2 in the Animated category! Terrence Malick and The Tree Of Life both saw some love with 2 nods this morning. How grand that Rooney Mara, Demián Bichir, Jonah Hill, and Nick Nolte are coming to the big party this year!

The nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, and Hugo surprised everyone, taking the lead with 11 nods. The Artist was close behind, with 10 nominations. Leonardo DiCaprio’s J. Edgar and Ryan Gosling’s Drive were shut out of any major awards, but Supporting nods for Bridesmaids’ Melissa McCarthy and Moneyball’s Jonah Hill should please a lot of folks. On our homework list: A Better Life (star Demian Bichir is up for Best Actor), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (ditto for Gary Oldman) and Animated Feature nominee A Cat in Paris, just for its awesome name. Stay tuned for plenty of analysis, photos and more on the Oscars, as we update throughout the day! Scroll down for the complete list.

Announced live just minutes ago from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverley Hills, the nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards are in.
In the end there were 9 Best Picture nominees and they are; The Artist, Moneyball, War Horse, The Help, Midnight in Paris, The Descendants, Hugo and two major surprises, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life (Malick was also nominated for Best Director) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The latter just came out of nowhere.
Unfortunately and criminally, no Tinker Tailor Solider Spy for Best Picture. There was a Best Actor nomination for Gary Oldman which is well received but 10 nominees and Tinker Tailor wasn’t one of them.
The full list of nominees are in and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo leads the way with 11 nominations…
