"Futurama" is first and foremost a comedy, but by setting events a thousand years in the future, it invited itself to have the kind of worldbuilding you'd see in more straight-laced science fiction. The writers aren't just out to make their audience laugh, but to invest them in a futuristic world.
The "Futurama" writers are learned science-fiction nerds themselves. Series co-creator David X. Cohen has degrees in physics and computer science, while David A. Goodman, who wrote the "Futurama" episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before," (which featured most of the original "Star Trek" cast) went on to write for "Star Trek: Enterprise." Since the writers are nerds, they know how obsessive nerds think and engage with media by overanalyzing it.
The creators of "Futurama" admit they've even relied on fans to preserve the series' continuity, checking the "Futurama" wiki rather than rewatching episodes themselves. An audio commentary track for the series premiere,...

Bender (John Dimaggio), the drunken alcoholic robot on Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's sci-fi sitcom "Futurama" is fueled by alcohol. Indeed, if Bender doesn't have a cocktail once or twice a day, he begins to rust, his batteries begin to run down, and he behaves as if he's drunk. Of course, consuming too much booze also makes Bender behave like he's drunk, so it's a careful balance to ensure he's functional. If that seems unclear, don't worry. The characters on "Futurama" don't quite have a grasp of it either. When Bender claims to have seen a werewolf car (!), Fry (Billy West) responds by saying "You've been drinking too much, or too little. I forget how it works with you. Anyway, you haven't drunk exactly the right amount."
Early in the series, Bender had more of a "drunken" voice, with actor Dimaggio giving the character a slightly raspier effect as well as a slight,...

In the 1993 "The Simpsons" episode "Marge vs. the Monorail," the corrupt nuclear power plant owner Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) is busted by the Epa for stuffing glowing toxic waste into trees at the local park (the trees sprout tentacles and the squirrels gain eyeball lasers). As punishment, Mr. Burns is fined $3 million, which he happens to have in his wallet. Springfield, suddenly flush with cash, has a town meeting debating what to spend it on. Marge Simpson (Julie Kavner) proposes that they use the money to fix up pothole-strewn Main Street, but a mysterious flim-flam man named Lyle Lanley (Phil Hartman) interrupts her. Using a broad smile and heaps of smarmy charm -- and a "Music Man"-style musical number -- Lanley convinces Springfield to spend the money on a monorail that he will build himself.

David Ellison’s fledgling Skydance Animation — run by head of animation John Lasseter and president Holly Edwards — has moved its movie slate from Apple Studios to Netflix. The multi-year streaming deal commences with next year’s musical fantasy “Spellbound,” directed by Vicky Jenson (“Shrek” and “Shark Tale”), featuring the voice talent of Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem, and boasting a score from Alan Menkin and original songs with lyricist Glen Slater. It’s about a princess who tries to reverse a spell that transformed her parents into monsters.
Set for release in 2025 is “Pookoo,” a buddy comedy about two enemies — a woodland creature and a majestic bird — that magically trade places. It’s helmed by former Disney director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”), with original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla.

David Ellison’s Skydance Animation has found a new home at Netflix, ending a lucrative distribution pact with Apple Studios.
Skydance Animation, run by John Lasseter with president Holly Edwards, will now exclusively release its animated movies directly to Netflix in an arrangement that will span multiple years, with the studio’s existing slate also moving exclusively to the streamer.
The first up will be “Spellbound,” which was previously set up at Apple. The film, starring Rachel Zegler and Tituss Burgess, is now set for release by Netflix in 2024, followed by “Pookoo” in 2025. Future films include “Ray Gunn,” directed by Brad Bird and an untitled Jack and the Beanstalk project directed by Rich Moore. Theatrical releases do not seem to be a part of the new Netflix-Skydance Animation agreement.

In a shocking move, Skydance Animation has inked a multiyear agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animation features that will be released directly on Netflix. According to the release, the deal also brings Skydance’s full existing animated feature slate exclusively to Netflix.
The move comes only two years after a wide-ranging partnership between Skydance Animation and Apple TV+ was announced, following Apple’s acquisition of Skydance Animation’s “Luck.” That deal was meant to include both television and features. (The Netflix release doesn’t mention television series.)
“Spellbound,” a high-concept musical fantasy from director Vicky Jenson, will be the first film released under the pact, in 2024. That didn’t take long. Skydance Animation has found a new home, signing a multi-year agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies to be released directly on Netflix. This deal means Skydance’s full existing animated feature slate will be released exclusively on Netflix.
Deal comes as a multi-year pact with Apple comes to an end. Skydance Animation is already staked with Netflix, and the deal expands on a number of different projects. The first new one is Spellbound, a film that began its road at Apple, but will now debut on Netflix in 2024. That will be followed by Pookoo in 2025.
This deal expands on the existing relationship between the two companies who have already partnered on a number of projects including the films The Adam Project, Heart of Stone, The Old Guard, and Spy Kids: Armageddon along with the series Fubar, Altered Carbon and Grace and Frankie.

Skydance Animation has signed a multiyear pact with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies for the streamer. First up for release under the deal is Spellbound, a title that was previously set up at Apple, where Skydance Animation signed a pact in 2021. Now, the animation arm of the David Ellison-run studio has found a new streaming home at a time when Netflix is restructuring its animation efforts.
Apple and the John Lasseter-led Skydance Animation have parted ways, with the latter bringing its full existing animation slate to Netflix. In addition to Spellbound, which voice stars Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem and features music from Alan Menkin, Netflix will release the once Apple-bound Pookoo from Tangled director Nathan Greno. In the third episode of "Futurama," called "I, Roommate", Fry (Billy West) has been causing a mess by sleeping in the Planet Express building where he works. The time has come for him to move out. At first, he moves in with the alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio), but, as it so happens, robots live in apartments the size of phone booths. Fry likes the idea of living with Bender, but can't sleep in a closet. Eventually, he and Bender find a sprawling bachelor pad where they can be roomies and both have enough space. The only conflict arises when Bender's antenna proves to interfere with the apartment's TV signals.
This may seem like a rather quotidian story for a sci-fi sitcom set in the distant future. This was a series with fantastical technologies, sentient robots, weird aliens, and faster-than-light space travel, and the third episode dealt with the down-to-earth...

“The Twits,” a new animated feature based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, will be coming to Netflix in 2025.
Phil Johnston, a Disney vet who worked on “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (which he also directed alongside longtime collaborator Rich Moore), is directing, producing and co-writing “The Twits.” Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong are on board as co-directors, with Meg Favreau co-writing the script with Johnston.
“The Twits” is the first animated venture to come out of Netflix’s 2021 acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company. The company says that the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” series is still on the way and there will be more announcements forthcoming. But so far the only thing to come from the Dahl purchase are a series of short films helmed by Wes Anderson that will debut later this month, beginning with the 40-minute “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Skydance Media CEO David Ellison called the creative process a “community” where “both sides of this disagreement actually need one another to move forward. So, my hope is that we can find a path to compromise so that everybody can get back to work and we can position ourselves for success going forward.”
“We are not a member of the AMPTP, and some of my closest friends are the writers and actors that we work with to create content. And, we literally work with every member on the AMPTP side,” he said during a Q&a at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia media conference in San Francisco when asked about the strike – day 127 for the WGA and day 54 for SAG-AFTRA.
The annual investor event is mostly limited to public companies. At privately-held Skydance, “We want to always make sure we position ourselves to be able to be a publicly-traded company,” Ellison said.

Three of Disney’s most popular animated franchises are getting new installments. Sequels in the “Frozen” and “Zootopia” series are both in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios, while a fifth film in the “Toy Story” series is in the works at Pixar.
News of these sequels was revealed by Walt Disney Corporation CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Q1 2023 earnings call on Wednesday.
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ and ‘Zootopia,'” Iger said during the call. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
The announcement of these three sequels followed some brutal news from Iger, who shared that 7,000 employees would be laid off at the company.

Skydance Animation has landed another major talent.
Rich Moore, director of “Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” is joining the team in an exclusive, multi-year overall deal. Under the new pact, Moore will create, develop and produce original animated features for the studio.
After leaving Disney in 2019, Moore did a brief stint at Sony Pictures Animation. The only feature he helped with, last year’s “Vivo,” was released directly to Netflix.
The move to Skydance Animation sees Moore reuniting with his old boss, former Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer John Lasseter. Lasseter took a six month sabbatical from Disney and Pixar in 2017 after sexual misconduct allegations emerged; he was ultimately never rehired (he consulted until the end of 2018). In January 2019, Lasseter was hired to head Skydance Animation, which then had an exclusive deal with Paramount and is now in partnership with Apple TV+.

It’s been almost a decade since Jennifer Lee became the first woman to helm a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film, 2013’s “Frozen.” She partnered with Chris Buck, and the duo co-directed and co-wrote what would become one of Disney’s all-time biggest hits. The film won an Oscar for animated feature.
In 2018, Lee was upped to chief creative officer and sought to find new voices. She would help burst open the door for other female directors at the studio including Peggy Holmes, who helmed “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” and “Get a Horse!’s” Lauren MacMullan.
This month, Variety will bestow its Creative Leadership Award on Lee for not only her work on animation but also for helping other women follow the opening she made.
Before she could even speak, Lee, a Rhode Island native, was exposed to her grandparents’ Disney records and the books that came with them.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in the animated musical “Vivo” plays an adorable-looking kinkajou, or a “honey bear” native to the rain forest. And he’s been tasked with delivering a song and a love letter to a music superstar played by Gloria Estefan.
This first trailer for “Vivo” comes from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, and the film features new songs from the “Hamilton” creator as the kinkajou also named Vivo as he travels across the world. He teams up with an energetic tween girl to help him get to Estefan’s character and deliver a song that will change the world and help reconnect two former partners.
“Vivo” also stars in its voice cast Zoe Saldaña, Juan de Marcos, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael Rooker, Nicole Byer and newcomer Ynairaly Simo as Vivo’s plucky young travel companion.

Netflix dropped the full trailer Thursday for “Vivo,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s love letter to Cuba and his first starring animated musical, made at Sony Pictures Animation (streaming August 6th). In addition to conceiving the idea a decade ago and writing eight original songs, Miranda voices the title character: a singer-musician kinkajou (a rainforest “honey bear”), who plays music in a lively Havana square with his beloved owner Andrés (Juan de Marcos of the Buena Vista Social Club). That is, until tragedy strikes, and Vivo journeys to Miami to deliver a love song to retiring superstar, Marta (Gloria Estefan) with the help of energetic tween Gabi (newcomer Ynairaly Simo).
“It’s taken so many turns, but at the heart of this story is this incredible friendship between Andrés and Vivo, and how it launches Vivo on an incredible journey from Cuba to Florida, where he does a lot of growing up,...

Exclusive: Netflix has licensed all global rights, sans China, to Sony Pictures Animation’s Vivo. The movie, directed by Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and co-directed by Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2) with new songs written and performed by Tony-winning Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, was recently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 4. The new drop date on Netflix is still to be determined.
I understand this is a similar deal to Netflix’s pickup of Sony’s Kevin Hart movie Fatherhood whereby Netflix gets the first window, which is streaming, and Sony will retain home entertainment and linear TV rights to all other territories, including China theatrical, after the pic’s exclusive run on the streamer.

As the streaming wars continue to heat up, any studio that owns and operates their own platform will be desperate for the various distribution deals to expire so that they can gather as much in-house content under one roof as possible. Disney Plus may be lagging far behind in terms of originals with the obvious exception of The Mandalorian, but the sheer strength in depth of the Mouse House’s back catalogue has seen the service gain over 70 million subscribers in the first year of its existence.

Without Spike & Mike, two hippie friends from Riverside, California, who pioneered the animation festival in the late ’70s, the indie short wouldn’t have become the cultural phenomenon that has helped shaped the industry today. That’s the takeaway of the celebratory documentary, “Animation Outlaws,” directed by stop-motion animator Kat Alioshin (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”), available now on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, Fandango Now, PlayStation, and Vimeo.
“Beyond anybody in the world, we stepped up and did it first, and premiered it first, and made it first — and that’s why the documentary is so important to me,” said Spike Decker, who first promoted rock bands and classic horror movies with the late Mike Gribble (who passed away from cancer in ’94) before segueing into animation festivals. Animation newbie Matthew Cherry (“BlacKkKlansman” executive producer) has entered the Best Animated Short Oscar race with “Hair Love,” which warmly embraces black father-daughter bonding over doing her hair for the first time. “I was intrigued about the trend of black dads doing their daughter’s hair on YouTube videos that went viral,” he said. “I wanted to [turn around] those negative stereotypes of dads not being involved in their kids’ lives, and represent that mainstream, modern day family that exits right now.”
The indie-produced short, distributed by Sony Pictures Animation, launched as a Kickstarter campaign in 2017. With strong black industry support, though, it amassing nearly $300,000, the most highly-funded short film campaign in Kickstarter history. Cherry formed a directing team with animators Everett Downing Jr. and Bruce Smith (creator of “The Proud Family”), and received early support from Karen Rupert Toliver during her transition from Blue Sky to Sony (where she’s currently...

Kristine Belson made her first trip to the Annecy Animated Film Festival as president of Sony Pictures Animation three years ago, not long after taking control of the studio. In a speech there, she sketched out a new philosophical direction for the division: In an animation landscape dominated by longtime juggernauts and franchises, Belson wanted to make Sony Animation a filmmaker-driven studio, one without a house style, which could take chances on projects other companies might struggle to fit into their more tried-and-true pipelines.
“It was well-received at the time, but it was all theoretical,” she says of her inaugural Annecy address. “Everyone says they want to be filmmaker-driven, and I believe all of us at the various animation studios believe it, but there’s a difference between talking the talk and walking the walk.”

“The Boondocks” and the late Anthony Bourdain are coming back to TV.
Sony Pictures Animation announced a “re-imagining” of the animated satire series “The Boondocks” in collaboration with creator Aaron McGruder as part of their presentation at the Annecy Festival 2019 on Wednesday, and the company is also developing an animated series called “Hungry Ghosts” based on the Dark Horse graphic novel comic series written by Bourdain and Joel Rose.
“The Boondocks” reboot, which is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, aims to update the cult, subversive satire for the modern era. It chronicles the adventures of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules the fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland with an iron fist.
“Hungry Ghosts” will be an anthology of twisted and culinary-inspired ghost stories with both horror and comedic elements.

Animation director Rich Moore has left Disney to join the “Spider-Verse” of Sony Pictures Animation, where he will develop, produce, and direct original animated features as well as advise on upcoming movie and series-based projects. This is a major defection for the post-John Lasseter Disney, but also a major coup for the Oscar-winning Sony (led by President Kristine Belson).
Lasseter recruited Moore to Disney a decade ago after he needed a change from “The Simpsons,” and it appears that the time was right for another creative change. “Ten years is a long time,” Moore said in a prepared statement, “but when you’re working on incredible films with people you love as I have these last 10 years, that time flies by. My kids waited patiently for Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet to come out for quite a long time, and when it did, we went to the movie theater and saw it, which was a big deal because we usually go to the drive-in for every movie, since it’s cheaper and my youngest can be wild and not bother as many people. But we trekked in and saw the movie, and we all loved it! My very favorite part was when Vanellope was running from the Disney police, and stumbled into the Disney Princesses’ room, and was interrogated by them, with them ultimately deeming her worthy of the princess title, embracing her laidback style of dress, and teaching her how to sing a song to find out her destiny.
The whole scene was hilarious and filled with fun little nods to the princesses’ backgrounds and some tongue-in-cheek jokes...

Their quest takes them to the vast, uncharted world of the internet where they rely on the citizens of the internet – the Netizens – to help navigate their way to eBay to find a replacement steering wheel.
Timed to the in-home release of the film, this Irl replica of the steering wheel has been donated by Walt Disney Animation Studios so that 100% of the proceeds from this auction item can be donated to Make-a-Wish® to help grant life-changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. Disney and Make-a-Wish® have a long-standing history together.
