In 2022, Netflix and showrunner Ryan Murphy released Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to mixed reviews and a tremendous amount of controversy.
While the series received acclaim from some critics for its performances and its unflinching portrayal of Dahmer's grisly crimes, others felt that the show went too far in humanizing the monster at its core.
Now, Murphy is preparing to court controversy again, this time with the story of Erik and Lyle Menendez.
The Menendez brothers are far more sympathetic figures than Dahmer, but the fact remains that they committed two brutal murders, which the show will likely depict in graphic detail.
Their murder trial became a national sensation when it was broadcast on Court TV in 1993, but our younger readers might be hearing the Menendez name for the first time.
So here's a rundown of what you can expect from a show that's sure to generate a lot...

In a riveting episode of 48 Hours titled “The Menendez Brothers’ Fight for Freedom,” viewers are taken deep into the ongoing saga of Lyle and Erik Menendez, whose lives have been defined by the shocking act of patricide they committed over three decades ago. Set to air on March 2, 2024, at 10:00 Pm Et/Pt on the CBS Television Network and available for streaming on Paramount+, this episode promises to delve into the heart of the Menendez brothers’ quest for justice.
From the outset, the Menendez case has been nothing short of sensational. In 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were brutally murdered in their Beverly Hills home, a crime that initially baffled investigators until their own sons emerged as the prime suspects. What followed was a trial that captivated the world, as Lyle and Erik Menendez stood accused of murdering their parents in cold blood.

Chile’s Oscar submission committee made quite the statement in choosing Felipe Gálvez’s The Settlers to represent the country in the Best International Feature race. That’s not just because this directorial debut beat out the latest films by filmmakers who had been previously tapped for the honor, including Pablo Larraín and Maite Alberdi. It’s also that Gálvez asks such tough questions about the South American nation’s history that look even further beyond the long shadow cast by the autocratic regime of Augusto Pinochet.
The Settlers confronts the myths of Chile’s very founding to highlight the original sins that still stain the national fabric. Gálvez’s film follows an unlikely trio consisting of a Scottish soldier (Mark Stanley’s Alexander MacLennan), an American mercenary (Benjamin Westfall’s Bill), and a mixed-race Chilean mestizo (Camilo Arancibia’s Segundo). Their journey starts with a simple command from the...

After watching the Peacock documentary “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed,” Rosie O’Donnell is calling for the release of the Mendendez brothers, who were sentenced to life in prison after killing both their parents in 1989. “I believe them, it’s time,” she said of Lyle and Erik’s defense at the time that they had been sexually molested by their father, Jose Menendez.
The abuse allegations took on new life after former Menudo member Roy Rosselló revealed in an April appearance to promote the doc that he had been drugged and raped by Jose Hernandez when he was young.
In a video shared to TikTok on Sunday, O’Donnell said that Lyle had initially reached out to her in 1996, but even though she believed they were innocent, she wasn’t ready to publicly support them.

In Budd Boetticher’s 1959 parable of how we remember violence, “Ride Lonesome,” Randolph Scott confronts the man who killed his wife at the very spot where he murdered her.
“That was a long time ago,” the killer said. “I’d almost forgot.” Scott’s reply? “A man can do that.”
So too can a society. Especially when it’s all too convenient to forget things so unpleasant they may shake our very sense of identity. Felipe Galvez’s Chilean Western “The Settlers” may remind some viewers of a Boetticher film when they’re watching it: following three men on horseback on a cross-country journey, it dramatizes questions of identity and belonging, and how these things can be written in violence. Most Boetticher-like, in a tight 98 minutes “The Settlers” says more than a lot of films double its length. It’s one of the most chilling art-Westerns to come along in some time,...

Edgardo Díaz, the founder and manager of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department over allegations of sexual assault by an ex-member of the group, reports the Los Angeles Times.
There have been a number of sexual abuse accusations against Díaz over the past several decades, but this investigation centers around allegations from Roy Rosselló, who was a teenage member of Menudo during the peak of its popularity. The common denominator between the Menéndez brothers and one Menudo band member is a grievous one.
In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menéndez were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menéndez. Throughout the sensationalized televised trial, the Beverly Hills brothers alleged that their father Jose had subjected them to years of sexual abuse, which motivated the murders. The prosecution maintained a firm argument that the boys killed José and Kitty for mere financial gain.
Now, three decades later, Peacock’s new three-part docuseries “Menéndez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” reveals Roy Rosselló’s corroborating claim that he was also sexually abused by the former RCA executive and father of the Menéndez brothers José Menendez.
Menudo was created in 1977 by Edgardo Díaz and grew to be one of the most notable boy bands of all time, attracting crowds of screaming girls like young Latin Beatles. The...

Two sensational stories collide in Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed, a new three-part documentary series airing on Peacock. One helped bring the culture into the era of nonstop TV crime and jurisprudence coverage: the grisly 1989 murder of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their sons, Erik and Lyle. The other involves the former Puerto Rican boy band sensation Menudo, and longstanding accusations of sexual abuse against the group’s Svengali and manager, Edgardo Díaz. The Menendez brothers, currently serving life in prison, have always maintained that their father raped them from the time they were small children.

The Ryan Murphy brand launched another successful product in 2022 with the excessively monikered "Dahmer -- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." It was a dark companion piece to the already-plenty-dour "American Crime Story" anthology series (which gave us the shamelessly entertaining "The People v. O.J. Simpson" in its first season), and while it didn't go down especially well with critics, the lead performances from Evan Peters and Niecy Nash earned nominations at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards. This bodes particularly well for the series' 2023 Primetime Emmy prospects. Add in Netflix's claim that the show logged one billion views in its first 60 days of streaming, and this means it's time for another unnerving exploration of notoriously grisly murders.
Up next is "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story." Whatever you think of Murphy's work, you have to admit that this is square in his sensationalistic wheelhouse. Here's everything we...

Monday is back, and since the linear passage of time means that we’re stuck going through Tuesday, Wednesday, etc., we once again face an uphill climb to get through the work week and into the weekend. Spring weather has also arrived for many in the United States, in mockery of our inability to go outside and enjoy it.
It sometimes feels as if there’s no respite from this inevitable cycle of work and toil. Fortunately, there are some fantastic new titles headed to streaming this week, to help you distract yourself both from work and the Writers Guild of America strike that will almost certainly begin on May 1.

Netflix and Ryan Murphy have found their next Monster — or rather, a pair of them.

Three decades ago, the infamous trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez riled the nation as people watched the brothers plead their case against the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. In 1996, the Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison. Throughout their trial, the defense argued Lyle and Erik murdered their parents out of fear after years of sexual molestation by their music executive father Jose. Now, decades later, another allegation has been brought forth, this time by Roy Rosselló, a former member of the Puerto Rican boy band sensation Menudo, who says that he was sexually assaulted as a teenager by Jose Menendez, the New York Times reported.
