With the help of her friend Aj (Zosia Mamet), she goes back through her “sex timeline” of exes and past hookups to find out why it’s happening and stop it once and for all. "Mad Men" has often sparked positive headlines for its compelling, often-inspiring storylines around its female characters like Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) and Joan (Christina Hendricks), but it's never gotten the same praise for the handling of its queer characters. There's a good reason for that: although characters like Sal (Bryan Batt) and Bob Benson (James Wolk) are interesting and well-written, their stories are pretty depressing. Bob never finds love over the course of the series, and Joan's lesbian friend in season 1 has her attempt to come out of the closet politely declined.
The only happy queer characters throughout the series are Kurt (Edin Gali), a minor European character who gives Peggy a cool haircut, and Joyce (Zosia Mamet), Peggy's openly lesbian friend in season 4 -- but both of these characters play minor roles. The most prominent gay character in "Mad Men" is Salvatore Romano, and things don't go well for him.

No matter how bad your summer vacations have been, they could in no way compare to the sheer horror of the villa getaway in “The Decameron,” one that is as filled with black comedy as it is with the Black Death.
Set in 14th-century Italy, Newtflix’s eight-episode limited series finds a group of (mostly) nobles fleeing the death and decay surrounding them to wall themselves away in a fortified palace, where they plan to frolic, drink, and generally be merry. Human nature being what it is, however, their plans are quickly derailed, and the show takes on a darker tone as the body count rises.
Along the way, there are enough secret identities and miscommunication to populate a Shakespeare play (though Giovanni Boccaccio’s book predates the Bard by a few hundred years). With a large ensemble and ever-shifting alliances, the costume design must pull its weight to keep...

Netflix’s latest dark comedy The Decameron answers the question: How would a group of wealthy people, isolated from the rest of the world due to a pandemic, act? If that premise is sounding eerily relevant to the last few years, it’s no coincidence.
Showrunner Kathleen Jordan was inspired by what the world had experienced during the early days of Covid-19, and by “the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic.” Loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death, Jordan found a way to tell this story to a modern audience.
A jam-packed ensemble cast — including Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Jessica Plummer and Tanya Reynolds — comes together in an Italian villa in an attempt to wait out the plague. While the concept itself doesn’t immediately read comedy, through Jordan’s unique tone and the acting, the...

Netflix’s The DeCameron is a dark comedy coupled with spoof elements that gives the audience a peek into the world of the nobles and aristocrats who lived in Italy during the deadly bubonic plague that engulfed a large part of the European continent. There are many characters in the show who are nobles who have never faced such a situation all their lives; they were protected from the outside world. There are also the servants and maids who shadow these nobles and get to know them on a personal level. These quirky characters make up the show, and as they come together to stay at a villa, it brings up many issues and conundrums.

“I was inspired by the concept of examining the slice of life moment of a pandemic,” The Decameron showrunner Kathleen Jordan says to The Hollywood Reporter about the inspiration behind the new Netflix show.
The dark comedy, which released on the streaming platform last week, is loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s short story collection set during the Black Death. The Decameron finds a group of characters, both nobles and servants, making their way to a villa in the Italian countryside in an attempt to wait out the plague.
While a plague-set show isn’t typically a touted as a “wine-soaked sex romp,” as The Decameron is, the Zosia Mamet and Tony Hale-led show manages to land laughs during a bleak time period.
“I wish that I could say there was a lot of intentionality behind it, but I think if you were to ask me to write a space drama,...

I hope you’ve stretched and are well hydrated, because you’re going to need it for the marathon of TV that lies ahead. Friday marks the official beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which means we’ve got more than two weeks of impressive physical feats across 32 sports and 45 disciplines that will inspire you while putting your athletic prowess to shame.
It all begins with the opening ceremony, which for the first time in history is taking place outside of a stadium. The parade of athletes that is the centerpiece of the event will occur on the Seine, with each nation’s delegates having their own boat. It is unclear whether the size of the watercraft is determined by the size of the delegation, but it would probably be funnier that way. LeBron James and Coco Gauff are the flag bearers for the United States.

In The Decameron, Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) is a character whose identity is so tied up in serving her mistress Pampinea (Zosia Mamet) that she doesn’t really spare a second to think about herself. At least, at first.
It’s 1348 in Firenze, Italy, and Misia has been tending to Pampinea with unwavering loyalty, accompanying her as they flee to Pampinea’s soon-to-be husband Leonardo’s villa in the countryside once the bubonic plague descends upon the masses.
When she and Pampinea arrive at Villa Santa, Misia shows up wearing what some may call rags. “Even though Pampinea comes with this huge dowry and is so wealthy, she treats her handmaiden so badly,” says Jackson. “She doesn't have any self-respect [when it comes to] how her staff are dressed.”
But one thing Pampinea cannot take away from Misia, no matter how much she asks of her? Her signature bob.

Other guests at the villa include Licisca (Tanya Reynolds), who poses as her employer Filomena (Jessica Plummer) after pushing her off a bridge into water. Modern television has provided ample evidence that time does not dictate genre. The Emmys learned this the hard way, when they tried to bypass the comedy or drama debates by using runtimes to decide category placement, only to be swarmed by even more controversy during their confounding, seemingly arbitrary appeals process. Yes, it turns out half-hour shows can be dramas and hourlong shows can skew comedic. Look no further than some of TV’s buzziest, best shows: “The White Lotus”, “Succession”, and “The Bear” (let’s not start that up again).
But while time may not determine what a series is labeled, it does often weigh heavily on a series’ success. More important than shoving a show into one box or another is recognizing that many of these shows are successful because they blur the lines. “The Bear” serves up intense kitchen scenarios that can skew toward sitcom set-ups, yet...

The Decameron begins with an invitation.
Visconte Leonardo invites a group of (mostly single) nobles to escape the bubonic plague ravaging 1348 Florence and reside at his Italian countryside oasis.
The honored guests include his bride-to-be Pampinea (Zosia Mamet) and her loyal handmaiden Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson); Panfilo (Karan Gill) and his pious wife Neifile (Lou Gala); Tindaro (Douggie McMeekin) and his doctor Dioneo (Amar Chadha-Patel); and his cousin Filomena (Jessica Plummer) who brings her servant –– and secret half-sister! –– Licisca (Tanya Reynolds).
When every guest turns up with their own hidden agenda, Leonardo’s humble steward Sirisco (Tony Hale) and cook Stratilia (Leila Farzad) are there to greet them. Why isn’t Leonardo there, you ask? Well, hold your horse-drawn carriages, because Leonardo has actually died, long before any of the guests even arrive. As the Black Death swept across medieval Italy, a group of nobles sought refuge from the devastation. In 1348, wealthy landowner Leonardo extended an invitation to fellow aristocrats hoping to outrun the plague—come shelter at my estate in the countryside, far from the disease-ridden city streets.
Thus a disparate dozen found themselves within the high walls of Leonardo’s luxurious villa, overlooking rolling vineyards. While cities burned with sickness, this remote haven promised respite.
Yet escaping the plague did not guarantee escaping drama. Trapped together for who knew how long personalities and pasts collided. Leonardo’s intended, the anxious Pampinea, arrived desperate to wed before her youth faded. Snobbish Filomena dragged along her faithful servant Licisca, who secretly dreamed of more. The devout Neifile and ambitious Panfilo brought their own tensions.
Even the servants harbored secrets, like Stratilia protecting the home’s true fate. With death knocking outside, would secrets stay buried?...

The thumbnail image for The Decameron on the Netflix app depicts a naked man charging toward a lake, his backside demurely pixelated out. The image jibes with the streamer’s description of the comedy series as “a wine-soaked sex romp in the Italian countryside.” But the scene pictured is actually the only bit of nudity in The Decameron, which fails to deliver anything remotely steamy, scandalous, or even satirically sexy.

As Netflix’s The Decameron begins, nearly all of our characters are retreating. They might not put it in quite those terms, but it’s exactly what these characters are doing: flocking to the “beautiful, not-infected countryside,” as one character puts it, in hopes of waiting out the Black Plague currently tearing through the continent.
But it doesn’t matter how hard they try to get into “the holiday state of mind,” or how desperately some of them might hope to reorient their fortunes while away. It almost doesn’t even matter how insistently real life intrudes on their getaway. The Decameron is a fitfully funny, occasionally poignant testament to the truism that no matter the circumstances, people will always find a way to be people, in all our petty or horny or heroic glory.
