Back in December 2023, Netflix swooped in and acquired season two of the critically acclaimed Australian drama The Tourist after Max passed on picking up the distribution rights after airing the first season. Season one of the riveting drama followed Jamie Dornan (Belfast) as a man with a sketchy past who suffered from amnesia as the result of a car accident that was meant to kill him. And season two, which premieres on February 29, 2024, finds Dornan reprising his role as Elliot alongside Danielle Macdonald as Helen, the only person he could depend on when he couldn’t remember his own name.
Their relationship grew over the course of the first season, and by the finale, they were more than just friends. Now, in season two, Elliot and Helen will be traveling to Ireland, hoping to find answers about Elliot’s identity. “But instead, they are forced to face the dangerous consequences of his past actions,...

His scene in the cell is a brilliant metaphor for the whole family's situation.

The key characters of White Lines are all struggling to heal from their traumas of twenty years prior. Particularly with the cases of Zoe, her father Clint Collins, Oriol Calafat, and Axel's best friend Marcus, who all desperately try to rewrite their pasts by diving into their pain. Emma Thompson will play a climate-change activist in “Extinction,” a timely satirical short film that will include footage of the Extinction Rebellion group’s ongoing wave of action in London.
Two-time Oscar winner Thompson has herself been involved in the high-profile London-based protests. She addressed crowds over the weekend from Extinction Rebellion’s signature pink boat, which was placed in Oxford Circus, one of the British capital’s busiest intersections, and which will feature in the film. That was part of a series of protests by the group. Its activities are carrying on this week as it lobbies for action against climate change and ecological collapse.
Thompson will play a veteran environmentalist and a highly qualified member of Extinction Rebellion who secures a meeting with a senior government official. She and the Conservative Party lawmaker lock horns as protests and disruption take place outside.

Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 13
There’s a scene towards the beginning of the episode where the Magnus of the Black Lotus (Francis Magee) challenges Sunny’s newly revealed long-lost sister Kannin (Eugenia Yuan) with what seems like impossible task: activating her brother’s dark-eyed powers. He picks up a huge hourglass (which he calls “a souvenir from Azra”), turns it over, and sets it down on his table. “You have until the sand runs out to turn him,” Magnus says, and walks out the room, leaving Kannin to wonder how the hell she’s going to make Sunny a dark-eyed one in the next 30 odd minutes.

David Jackson’s earnest debut is sumptuously shot on England’s south coast but hobbled by hackneyed plotlines
Former TV director David Jackson makes his feature debut with this earnest, technically assured piece of downbeat British social realism. The story is about a middle-aged guy living an almost feral existence at the margins of society who is forced to reconnect with his estranged teenaged son.
The film looks good, and evokes the wild beauty of England’s south coast, thanks to some great location work by cinematographer Ben Cole. Francis Magee delivers his lead performance with conviction, and there is a nice humorous cameo by Doon Mackichan as his neighbour. The problem is that the storytelling is unconvincing: there is a clash between the realist style and the patent unreality in much of the narrative. Moreover, the film winds up with some very naive assumptions about how easy it is...

There’s a whole lot of digging, but not much suspense or interest dug up in “The Dig.” This first feature for sibling directorial duo Andy and Ryan Tohill follows several shorts, and probably should’ve been another one: Stuart Drennan’s screenplay scarcely provides enough incident or psychological insight to sustain 90-odd damply atmospheric minutes. Instead, this glum mood piece simply hits the same bleak note over and over to dulling effect, despite a murder-mystery hook that goes barely exploited until the very end. It’s a challenging sit with limited rewards, and is likely to similarly provide a challenge to commercial placements.

After fifteen years in jail for murder, Ronan Callahan (Moe Dunford) returns home to find his victim’s father caught in a loop. Every day spent behind bars was a day Sean McKenna (Lorcan Cranitch) languished in the bog behind the Callahans’ property, digging holes along a carefully marked grid in search of his daughter’s body. He promised he wouldn’t stop until she was at rest and so he shoveled mud while his wife lay dying of cancer and still shovels mud now that his other daughter Roberta (Emily Taaffe) quit her job to make certain he didn’t die of thirst or starvation. We can therefore assume the “warm” welcome Ronan will receive upon working up the nerve to demand Sean leave. And we can guess what comes next.

"Where is she?!" The first trailer has debuted for a film titled The Dig, playing at the Toronto Film Festival next in a few weeks. The first feature made by filmmakers Andy Tohill & Ryan Tohill, this already won Best Irish Feature at the Galway Film Festival earlier this summer. Moe Dunford (from "Vikings") plays a man released from prison after fifteen years for a murder he can’t remember committing. When he returns home, he ends up helping the victim's father find her body by digging in the dirt. The cast includes Emily Taaffe, Francis Magee, and Lorcan Cranitch. The film is still looking for distribution, so this trailer is mainly to drum up interest at Tiff. From the looks of it, this seems very intense, emotional, and seriously impressive. Here's the first festival trailer for Andy & Ryan Tohill's The Dig, direct from Vimeo (via Deadline): After serving fifteen years for murder,...

After the foolish fondness of The Angel’s Share (2012), Ken Loach is back in familiar ground with the story of Jimmy Gralton, who built a community hall in Ireland’s County Leitrim in the early 1920s that enraged the local haves. Also involved with reinstating an evicted tenant farmer, he fled to America for ten years or so, before returning to do the same thing all over again. The heart of the film is expressed in the words of his mother, at the hearing on his deportation in 1933 (the only Irishman ever to be deported from his country): “Why is an old tin hall so dangerous?”
The first cause of all the trouble is that education is the preserve of the church, and Father Sheridan is royally pissed – the hall is a place (the only place) for local kids to learn drawing, literature, boxing, and so on. The priest...

While a Venetian touch (gondolas, art, architecture, margherita pizzas) certainly adds to the charm of the Venice Film Festival experience, for a third year straight, cinephiles can skip the packing their suitcases portion of a trip and bring the Lido into their own screening rooms. Venice Biennale’s Sala Web has reteamed with Festival Scope folks to offer an appetite whetting total of eleven features (8 Orizzonti section & 3 Biennale College – Cinema). Announced yesterday, digital tickets for the Sala Web screenings (4€ each) can be grabbed at www.boxoffice.festivalscope.com – but don’t throw your popcorn into the microwave just yet. The 2014 sampling of world cinema/72nd Venice Film Fest is only available during a period of 5 days beginning at 9 pm (Italian time) on the day of each film’s official presentation.

Ken Loach has revealed that reports of his retirement are not entirely accurate.
Last year, the 77-year-old filmmaker was reported to be moving into making just documentaries following the release of his latest film Jimmy's Hall.
"This is probably the last narrative feature for Ken," said producer Rebecca O'Brien at the time. "There are a few documentary ideas kicking around, and that will probably be the way to go, but this is a serious period drama with a lot of moving parts so it's a big thing to put together. I think we should go out while we're on top."
However, Loach has now revealed that he has changed his mind in regards to his retirement from drama.
"I kind of thought I wouldn't get through another one just as we were beginning Jimmy's Hall because it's a moment of maximum pressure when you haven't shot a thing but you're knackered from all the prep,...

Renowned filmmaker Ken Loach returns behind the camera once more this year to bring us another anticipated drama in the form of Jimmy’s Hall, based on the true story of Jimmy Gralton.
Loach, one of the most prolific directors throughout his career, brought us the well-received documentary The Spirit of ’45 last year, and Jimmy’s Hall sees him back in narrative feature territory, following on from 2012’s award-winning The Angels’ Share.
With its release date just around the corner at the end of next month, eOne have released the first trailer to whet our appetites.
In 1921 Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in Ireland where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream… but above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy’s Hall celebrates the spirit of these free thinkers. The film is set in 1932 and follows events...

It is midsummer which means blood is flowing in the streets of England’s most dangerous county – Midsomer. Over the next few weeks, Acorn Media are releasing not one, not two but Six boxsets of the beloved hit series Midsomer Murders on DVD. Not only that, but they are also releasing the Alec Guinness classic Smiley’s People on Blu-ray. So without further ado, let’s begin.
Midsomer Murders Set 22
The four stories in this set were originally broadcast in the UK in late 2011 and have never been shown in the U.S. All four feature Neil Dudgeon as Barnaby and Jason Hughes as his ever-reliable sidekick. The first of the stories is Sleeper Under the Hill. It centers around a group of Druids and a Stonehenge-like monument that they use during rituals. A local farmer plans to plough up the surrounding meadow, an endeavor...

While Episode 3 of HBO's hit Soapless Opera was a bit talkier - not to mention 100% less infanticidey - than the last two eps, that's not to say that it didn't offer its fair share of thrills, chills, and dead kids. Let's jump in, shall we?
We pick right off with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) getting his frozen ass handed to him by his sword-coveting, baby-killing host, Craster (Robert Pugh). Seriously, does no one have a copy of Martha Stewart Entertains to pass around north of the wall to help people navigate these situations? Because it says - right there in Chapter 1 - that it is considered impolite to murder your children and/or feed them to the Undead that Rule the Night when you have guests over. Also, I didn't see a single guest towel!

Shit keeps piling up for new Hand Of The King Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) to clean up. Or at least that’s what I think the main storyline for Season Two is going to be. Firstly, he still has to take care of the little mess that is Ned Stark’s execution — which has led to a massive and ever expanding war. And now he has to take rectify the bastard baby massacre that we now know was ordered by the sniveling King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson). Tyrion is worried that the citizens of King’s Landing will soon join the revolt against The House of Lannister. And with the number of friends and allies dwindling, Tyrion sees his choices being limited.
Which is why when his sister Cersei (Lena Headey) questions his seriousness at running the kingdom, it stings him. And it stings him even more when she reminds him...

Well hello, my Wildlings! Yes, our Crown Prince has heard your pleas and we will, indeed, be recapping the second season of HBO's dragontastic Hair Opera Game of Thrones. You may know me from my liveblogs of As the World Turns or recaps of American Horror Story, the combination of which makes me uncannily well-suited for covering such a complex, melodramatic, and patently batsh*t series. And I am well-versed in the ins and outs (and ins and outs) of the series, so never fear - I will have no trouble keeping my Bannisters straight from my Targomuffins.
We didn't recap the first episode, but I can sum it up in one animated Gif:
"You Get A King! And You Get A King! And You Get A King!"

Game of Thrones He kinda sucks. “The Night Lands” Air Date: 4/8/12
Arya Stark (still dressed as a boy and mostly pulling it off), Baratheon’s bastard Gendry (Joe Dempsie), and Dumb and Dumber themselves – Lommy Greenhands (Eros Vlahos) and Hot Pie (Ben Hawkey) – bicker on their way to the Night’s Watch. That is, until the Royal Guard arrive with a warrant out for someone among their group. Arya immediately thinks they’re after her, but they’re really after Gendry, but no one knows why (except us). Yoren (Francis Magee) threatens the lives of the guard, and sends them on their way, but it’s clear they will be back, with more men. And now Gendry has a target on his back amongst the group, and he’s Arya’s only friend. Uh oh.

We're now two episodes deep into the new season of "Game of Thrones," and a couple of trends are beginning to emerge. For one, incest appears to be a popular theme in Westeros. For another, killing children is a heck of a way to end an episode.
Season two's second episode, titled "The Night Lands," once again claimed the life of an infant, proving that the world beyond the Wall is just as cold and unforgiving as Westeros itself, if not more so. But it wasn't all doom and gloom: There were heroic moments as well, particularly for Tyrion Lannister, and the introduction of Salladhor Saan was a welcome moment of levity as well. But again with the incest — uch!

Just when you think you’ve reported all the casting news about Game of Thrones they pull you back in for another, even if it’s for a Faceless Man! German actor Tom Wlaschiha has been tapped to play Jagen H’gar, an assassin you definitely do not want to mess with. We’ve actually seen him before, albeit briefly, in the Season 1 finale. You could see him with a hood over his head as he escorted criminals to the Wall. This was just around the time Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) was making her escape with Yoren (Francis Magee). Don’t worry about not seeing his face. It goes with his nickname, the “Faceless Man of Bravos.” It’s a testament to how good of an assassin he is.

The riveting ‘Game Of Thrones’ season finale began with a long close-up of the bloody sword that beheaded Ned Stark, and ended with Daenerys literally rising from the ashes with dragons. But all of that Still doesn’t fill the big empty hole left by Ned’s execution.
But maybe that’s the point of Game of Thrones. Just like in real life, big personalities leave big holes when they’re gone and the season finale was all about the aftermath, as the survivors tried to live and move on after death.
Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) shocking and cruel beheading left his wife and friends hungry for revenge — and his daughters desperate for survival. Ned Stark and King Robert's relationship is taking a bad turn in the upcoming episode of "Game of Thrones". The two are clashing of the king's order of a preemptive strike against the Targaryens, a defiant stand that leaves the Hand in a precarious position.
While Ned refuses to be involved in the assassination planned by the king, Arya overhears a conversation that threatens her father's life. Tyrion receives a rude welcome at the Eyrie from Catelyn's sister Lysa, and Sansa catches the eye of a handsome knight.
"The Wolf and the Lion" will air Sunday, May 15 at 9 P.M. on HBO. Among guest stars in the episode are Kate Dickie as Lysa Arryn, Francis Magee as Yoren, Ian McElhinney as Barristan Selmy and Eugene Simon as Lancel Lannister.
