*Sigh* — Not a day goes by that I don’t miss my escaped brontosaurus. This wonder movie of the silent era, which pits five intrepid explorers against Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fantastic South American plateau where marvelous animals from the dawn of time still live. Blackhawk Films and Lobster’s latest digital restoration includes footage never before seen, in original tints; it’s dedicated to film restorer David Shepard.

A lot of us can probably recall that these two iconic movie monsters have met before in the past. Things didn’t always turn out the way people thought they would but then Godzilla vs. Kong really depends on where they’re fighting. Terrain is usually a big factor in any fight as it gives a decided advantage to one opponent over another. The weapons that each monster will use can be negated or amplified depending on what ground they’re fighting on. With King Kong and Godzilla though the fight could happen virtually anywhere and it’s going to be an epic that

Kong is king! And since 1933, Kong has been one of the iconic movie monsters. For over 80 years in numerous films, the giant ape has gone from a stop-motion puppet to a spectacle of computer-generated effects. But Kong isn’t the only super-charged element in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' new monster movie, Kong: Skull Island, a rather fun and never-too-serious action adventure film.
Monsters are real. Well, at least that’s what scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) believes. He's spent his entire life hunting for evidence of monsters and believes that proof exists on Skull Island, an undocumented place kept hidden by a massive storm. Randa is finally given permission to explore the island with the help of a military platoon led by Lt. Col. Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson). Knowing that something beyond imagination could exist on the island, Randa employs a tracker named James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) as well.

The latest movie to bring the super-sized simian Kong to the big screen, Kong: Skull Island, comes out today. Kong is a very well-known movie monster, but there are some things you probably don’t know about the Eighth Wonder of the World. Here are seven bits of trivia about King Kong.
1. Despite popular belief, the name “Skull Island” was never used in the original King Kong. For decades, people have used that name to describe Kong’s island home. The new movie uses “Skull Island” in its title. But the fact is, that name was never used in the classic first version. When the characters in that version reach the island, they know they’ve come to the right place because they see “Skull Mountain”, so-named because it’s shaped like a skull. However, the island itself is never named—only Skull Mountain is.
2. The very first Japanese Kaiju movie was a little-known,...

Kong: Skull Island marks the triumphant return of King Kong to the theater for the first time since 2005 when Peter Jackson thought it was a good idea for a giant ape to ice skate with a damsel in distress, much to the chagrin of critics and audiences everywhere. This Kong doesn’t have time for ice skating or long walks around New York City because he’s got to protect his home from underground lizard hybrids, birds that can saw a man in half and even humans who feel Kong would look good over their mantle.

In Kong: Skull Island, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts transports audiences to a mysterious land brimming with creatures both friendly and deadly, and ruled over by one of cinema’s most iconic monsters of all time: King Kong.
At the recent press day for Kong: Skull Island, Daily Dead joined several other journalists in speaking with Vogt-Roberts, who discussed his approach to the aesthetic of the project, the challenges that came with creating Kong for this film, and more.
A Legendary Pictures film, look for Kong: Skull Island in theaters everywhere this weekend from Warner Bros.
Skull Island feels like it pays homage to Apocalypse Now and some other war films of that era. Was that something conscientious to you as you were approaching the project?
Jordan Vogt-Roberts: Well, the version of this movie that came to me took place in 1917, so it was not a movie in the ’70s at all.

Though it may not feel fully inspired so much as competently pre-visualized, Kong: Skull Island fits snugly into the growing canon of reboots that exist within ever-expanding movie universes. That’s a first sentence to a positive review that perhaps reads a bit more cynically than intended. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by a bunch of dudes (Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly with a story credited to John Gatins), this umpteenth version of the King Kong story pulls from every available pop-culture source in building a fun creature feature. Much of the credit goes to the breathtaking effects and brisk pace, which distract from some lofty line readings and silly plot devices.
In 1973, Bill Randa (John Goodman), with the help of the much-smarter Brooks (Corey Hawkins), rounds up a team of soldiers and specialized civilians to explore a newly discovered island for scientific reasons. Or so he says.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) takes his indie sensibilities and translates it into blockbuster movie magic with this week’s Kong: Skull Island.
Set in the 1970s, just after the Vietnam War, the action adventure flick follows a group of scientists (John Goodman, Corey Hawkins), a war photographer (Brie Larson), a British Sas tracker (Tom Hiddleston) and a military squadron (lead by Samuel L. Jackson) who set out to discover an uncharted island and all the mysteries it holds. Little do they realize, though, that those mysteries include the mythical Kong, a giant ape who rules over his dominion with a heavy hand.
In his glowing review of the film, our very own Matt Donato had this to say:
This is a grand cinematic adventure powered by furry fury, as the horrors of war blend with chest-beating creature confidence.

Last weekend, Logan devastated all the other contenders at the box office, surprising experts and raking in an unexpected amount of cash. This week, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine faces a gigantic challenger, as Kong: Skull Island comes to theaters.
Kong is the only new wide release this week. Everyone else is staying out of the way of both Logan and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters next week. That gives Kong this weekend all to itself, at least in terms of new movies. The question will be whether or not Logan will run out of steam after its big weekend last week, thereby making room for Kong to rule this weekend.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Boiled down to its bonkers essence, Skull Island is a Vietnam war movie with monsters, a retro analog vibe, and a dash of both Moby-Dick and The X-Files. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good monster movie; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
What’s the big surprise of Kong: Skull Island? No, it’s not a secret sequel to Peter Jackson’s 2005 film King Kong; the two movies are not connected in any way. And no, in fact, this Kong is not a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, either, though the two are both part of the shared universe that’s being called the MonsterVerse; coming soon: Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
Surprise! This isn’t a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla.

Alex Garcia knows a thing or two about giant monsters. He was the executive producer on Bryan Singer's 2013 fantasy Jack The Giant Slayer and 2014's Godzilla, and now he's the producer of this year's Kong: Skull Island. The movie not only represents the giant ape's return to cinema screens for the first time since 2005's King Kong remake, directed by Peter Jackson, but also the next step in a larger series of giant monster flicks from Legendary Entertainment.

Kong: Skull Island was one of the films I was the most excited for coming into 2017, ever since the very first trailer was released. While I enjoyed Peter Jackson’s spin on the original King Kong back in 2005, it was a story I had already seen, and I wanted to see something new, something that truly celebrated the majesty of everyone’s favorite larger-than-life primate who has been a part of cinematic history for over 80 years now.
And thankfully, Kong: Skull Island delivers just that. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has crafted a breathtaking and exhilarating monster movie that doesn’t hold back when it comes to the film’s titular hero, as well as his habitat, which is teeming with all sorts of creatures both good and bad. Skull Island’s story does feel like it’s often working from two very different scripts, but Vogt-Roberts manages to interweave his epic,...

King Kong is roaring back onto our screens in a big, bad way, and if this fantastic new trailer, courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel Live, for Kong: Skull Island is any indication, it’s gonna be a hell of a good time. There’s elements of humour, horror, and even a war drama present in this stylish new glimpse at the movie, and it seem director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) has brought them altogether in a way that will leave us with an endlessly entertaining blockbuster at the end of the day. While the cast is spectacular, with not one, not two, but three Marvel alums (Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and new girl on the scene Brie Larson) and John C. Rielly bringing the comedy, this movie really belongs to the titular gigantic monkey, and the visual effects bringing Kong to life look spectacular. On top of all that,...

A Tribute to King Kong takes place as part of the The St. Louis International Film Festival Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 6:00pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The first film screened will be the new documentary Long Live The King, which explores the enduring fascination with one of the biggest stars — both literally and figuratively — in Hollywood history: the mighty King Kong. Produced and directed by Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger, the creative team behind the award-winning “Beast Wishes,” the documentary devotes primary attention to the 1933 classic, celebrating the contributions of filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, and Bruce Cabot, writer Edgar Wallace, and especially stop-motion innovator Willis O’Brien. But Kong’s legacy is also fully detailed: the sequel “Son of Kong,” the cinematic kin “Mighty Joe Young,” the Dino DeLaurentis and Peter Jackson remakes, even the Japanese versions by Toho Studios.

★★★☆☆Two subjects one would never expect to encounter in the same film; North Korea and cinephilia. They come together - bizarrely and fascinatingly - in Robert Cannan and Ross Adam's documentary The Lovers and the Despot. In 1978, celebrated South Korean actress Choi Eun-hee visited Hong-Kong to discuss what she believed to be the offer of a highly lucrative role. Instead, Choi was lured to a beach and kidnapped by North Korean agents, who whisked her off to North Korea under orders from then dear leader Kim Jong-il, one of her biggest fans.

King Kong was created in 1933 by Universal Pictures and was the prototype for the Kaiju genre, years before Godzilla ever stomped on Tokyo. The image of Kong atop the Empire State Building is one of the most iconic images in the history of film and pop culture. The first film led to a sequel (the Son of Kong), an animated series, lots of rip-offs (Mighty Joe Young, Konga, A*P*E, the Mighty Peking Man) and years later inspired a pair of remakes (Not counting the campy Kaiju films King Kong vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes.) After all these years, Kong remains one of the greatest giant movie monsters of all time. Let’s take a...

It was recently announced that the long hoped-for remake of the 1962 Kaiju classic King Kong v. Godzilla is in the works. But how could such a film work today, considering subsequent changes in the characters and the jaded skepticism of modern audiences? Let’s take a look and see how this clash of Kaijus could work today. Keep in mind this is all just guess work and speculation.
People love “verses” films. Whether it’s Alien vs. Predator or Jason vs. Freddy or the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans love to see two famous characters thrust together in one film to fight for supremacy. When you talk about Kaiju “verses” films, the ultimate monster battle of all time came in 1962 when the reigning king of giant beasts took on the original creature king. Toho Pictures’ hottest property, the mighty Godzilla, locked up with the ape that...

From Bayonetta to Lara Croft, there are a good amount of female leads in games who are strong, intelligent, and badass. Unfortunately, most female sidekicks tend to be nothing more than eye candy or comedic relief. However, every once and a while we see a fantastic supporting female, like Alyx Vance or Liara T’soni, and once in a blue moon there’s the female sidekick who transcends the supporting role and becomes the star of the game.
Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong series)
Yes, Dixie is the star of Donkey Kong Country 3, but for the majority of the Dkc series she plays the role of sidekick. In both DKC2 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Dixie is easily the best Kong to play as. Her signature ability is to twirl her ponytail, which acts like a propeller on a helicopter, allowing her to hover a bit and gain good distance.

Pixels
Written by Tim Herlihy & Timothy Dowling
Directed by Chris Columbus
USA, 2015
There are mild amusements to be found in Pixels. Nostalgia oozes from every cinematic pore, as director Chris Columbus weaves these videogame relics into a modern landscape. Unfortunately, rather than fully committing to his elegant premise, Columbus gets bogged down in unconvincing character development. It’s easier to believe a ginormous Pac-Man will chomp New York City than Kevin James will ever be President of the United States! Sandler fans and little kids might enjoy this rollcall of ‘80s game icons, but everyone else should just rent Ghostbusters instead.
Pixels is a love letter to old school gamers. The original nerds who spent way too much time (and money) at the local video arcade when they should have been cutting class and sneaking cigarettes, instead. Like any self-respecting clique, these gamers had their own de facto leaders. In this particular case,...

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking time to have a look at my 100 Great Kung Fu movie list and feel free to add any movies in the comment box if they don’t make my list (I have probably forgotten many movies).

In this music video for the Pixels soundtrack single, "Game On," once-presidential hopeful Waka Flocka Flame has summoned a veritable squad of classic video-game legends, including everyone from Donkey Kong to Frogger to Pac-Man, to let you know that ... the game will be on come July 24. Oh, and catchy-anthem-maker Good Charlotte is also in this thing (which features lots of rad footage from the movie). No offense to Waka, but it seems like it was a missed opportunity to not have renowned video-game expert Lil' Flip also spit some lines on this. Maybe for the inevitable Pixels 2.

Many films tried to capitalise on the popularity of the late, great Bruce Lee. Here are our ten favourites...
1973 was the year that kung fu broke in America. The release of the popular Five Fingers Of Death (aka King Boxer) in March set the fuse and when Enter The Dragon (the first Hong Kong martial arts film co-produced by a major Us studio) followed in August, it exploded.
Although Bruce Lee was billed as a co-star in Enter The Dragon alongside John Saxon because casting an Asian actor in the lead role of an American film was unheard of at the time (and would remain so until 1982 when Sho Kosugi topped the bill for Revenge Of The Ninja), it was Bruce who captured the public's imagination. His amazing look and style, his astonishing talent for acting, writing and directing, and his unparalleled martial arts ability made him an icon for...

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

What’s old is new again in the latest trailer for Chris Columbus’ Pixels, which sees Adam Sandler and his gang of friends witness the earth come under siege from the very video game character they grew up with.
From Donkey Kong to Q*Bert, Pac-Man to Space Invaders, the clip is as bombastic as it is nostalgic, with a hoard of extraterrestrials misinterpreting our intergalactic search for intelligent life. Now, having travelled light years to find us, the aliens declare war on humanity leaving President Will Cooper (Paul Blart: Mall Cop star Kevin James) to call upon his childhood friends in order to prevent mass extinction at the hands of, well, malevolent pixels.
And so, it isn’t long before Cooper is joined by the greatest video game champs of the ’80s, replete with all of the old stereotypes one would expect from the generation. Alongside Adam Sandler’s...

What would you do if aliens interpreted examples of 1980s video games found in a space probe as a declaration of war? And sent giant versions of icons such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong to attack us? Clearly, you’d hire... Adam Sandler to defend the human race. Or at least, that’s what happens in action-comedy Pixels. Spawned from Patrick Jean’s inventive short, Pixels has is a big, brash Roland Emmerich-style alien invasion thriller welded to a high-concept Sandler comedy. The story finds Us President Will Cooper (Kevin James) tracking down old friend and ‘80s video-game champ Sam Brenner (Sandler) so he can put together a team of old-school arcade masters (including Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage) to defeat the techno-menace. So, basically it’s Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell from The King Of Kong saving the world? With director Chris Columbus aboard to marshal the spectacle...

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. Many monster movies work as an analogue to a widespread traumatic event. The original Godzilla was implicitly about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Bong Joon-ho’s The Host was explicitly about a specific incident involving the American military at the turn of the millennium, which can be directly tied back to the U.S.’s presence in South Korea since the 1950s. There is no shortage of monstrous figures in the history of American film, but usually they incarnate a broader social anxiety rather than a collective once: Dracula is fear of sex, fear of the vaguely Eastern European other. While Frankenstein’s monster is the fear of progress and, yet again, fear of the other.
With the exception of Pearl Harbor and 9/11, the United States has never really been on the receiving end of a massive, all-encompassing national trauma perpetrated by an outside force.

The forest is once again alive, thanks to Retro Studios’ release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the follow-up to its well-received and incredibly difficult series reboot, Donkey Kong Country Returns. This time around, however, there are no voodoo masks. On top of that, a few familiar Kong family members have chosen to venture out of the woodwork to join their pals Donkey and Diddy on their latest adventure. Still, the core remains the same, and the difficulty hasn’t changed much.
Tropical Freeze begins during a festive celebration. It seems to be Donkey Kong’s birthday, and he’s not alone in celebrating it. Unfortunately for him, though, his fellow apes aren’t the only ones who will be paying him a visit on this special day. Ships are on the horizon, and things are about to drastically change.

Diddy & Dixie
Diddy and Dixie first appeared together in my all time favourite game Donkey Kong Country 2. The Kong family tree is renowned for causing a little confusion, it is often thought that Diddy is Donkey Kong’s son, when in fact he is his nephew! But enough with the “Donkey Kong” fact session, lets turn our attention back to this adorable simian couple.
Diddy and Dixie are the heroes of Donkey Kong Country 2, tasked with rescuing Donkey Kong from Kaptain K.Rool, leader of the Kremlin Krew. Dixie immediately earns points as a top girlfriend as she assists Diddy through giant Zinger-hives, haunted bayous and other hellish landscapes, crawling with Kremlins and other undesirables.

The 1986 monster sequel King Kong Lives was a flop for producer Dino De Laurentiis, but a source of remarkable details for us...
Producer Dino De Laurentiis assembled an all-star cast and gathered a colossal budget for his 1976 remake of King Kong. Once again a story about a giant ape transported to New York and running amok, the 1976 King Kong overcame its production difficulties - including a malfunctioning 40ft tall mechanical ape designed by Carlo Rambaldi - and became a sizeable hit.
A decade later, De Laurentiis decided that it was finally time to make a sequel to King Kong, and brought back director John Guillermin (not to mention a much smaller budget of $10m) to make King Kong Lives. Unfortunately, by the middle of the 80s, nobody seemed to be particularly keen on seeing another giant ape movie - especially one full of countryside...

We're sad to learn that former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi has passed away at the age of 85.
Nintendo was still a trading card company when Hiroshi Yamauchi took over in 1949, and it was under his guidance that the business became a true gaming icon of the 1980s. In what is surely remembered as Nintendo's golden age, Yamauchi-san oversaw the development of the Family Computer (later the Nintendo Entertainment System in the Us and Europe) and the creation of arguably the most beloved and recognised games and characters in the industry: Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong to name but a few.
He continued to serve as president until 2002, overseeing the launch of successive generations of consoles and handhelds, including the hugely popular Game Boy and Super Nintendo. It was announced today that Yamauchi-san passed away in a Japanese hospital, and that his funeral will be held on Sunday.

King Kong: The Musical is set to take Australia by storm – and even though I’m not the biggest fan of stage musicals (or any musical that doesn’t star Bing Crosby and Bob Hope), I’d plunk down some serious cash to see it just to get a good look at the giant Kong they’ve constructed for the adaptation. An Australian news program recently did a piece highlighting the massive puppet that stars in the adaptation of the 1933 film, and this thing is astounding. Standing six meters in height and weighing one ton, this king of the jungle requires 10 onstage handlers (and three off) to operate. Puppeteers responsible for bringing Kong to life go through a grueling 10-week training process, then get to experience the joy of operating this behemoth in...
