Low-budget take on the evergreen tale already feels overshadowed by the grand French retelling due next door
This British stab at the deathless Dumas novel refuses to heed its own running gag: always run in the face of overwhelming odds. In this case it’s the imminent arrival of a star-bejewelled, two-part French adaptation with Vincent Cassel, Eva Green, Romain Duris and Vicky Krieps. Instead, it puts up a valiant stand – led by pretty plush production and costume design for what is presumably a low-budget affair. But finally it waves its colours in surrender, let down by patchy acting and unimaginative direction.
It at least boasts one first: a black D’Artagnan (Malachi Pullar-Latchman). Whatever your stance on “racelifting”, in this instance it works pretty well: emphasising the would-be musketeer’s outsider but upwardly mobile status as he arrives in Paris, and lines up back-to-back duels with Athos (Ben Freeman...

The task of transforming a popular movie into a stage musical is a tough challenge that has brought successes (Billy Elliot), and disappointments (Made in Dagenham), so Gurinder Chadha's idea of bringing her 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham to the West End was an intriguing one.
The majority of the feel and the plot of the original film remains in the musical. Set in suburban west London, it focuses on Jess, who worships David Beckham and has a desire to play football that doesn't fit in with her Punjabi Indian parents' plans.
She secretly plays for her local women's football team and soon falls in love with coach Joe, which creates a difficult love triangle with her best friend Jules, a role which helped transform Keira Knightley into an international star.
The film's musical leaning lends itself well for a musical adaptation, and composer Howard Goodall and lyricist Charles Hart...

Juliet Stevenson is as excited as anyone for the upcoming Bend It Like Beckham musical.
The Truly, Madly, Deeply actress played the mother of Jules (Keira Knightley) in the original 2002 film, which has been adapted for the stage by director Gurinder Chadha.
Stevenson told Digital Spy: "I'm really delighted because it's such a fantastic story, and I can see it lending itself very well to the stage.
"I often think, 'No, that's a bad idea, don't make a musical out of that movie', but Bend It Like Beckham is screaming out to be made into one."
She continued: "There's so much song and dance, and it's such a vibrant story. It's more than just a story, it's got a lot to say about what it is to be a British-Asian and the battle between the two competing cultures. [Chadha] has such a capacity to make that into something joyous and funny.

Cast your minds back to 2002 - a time when Pop Idols didn't need to have The X Factor, Fifty Shades of Grey were just colours on a paint sampler chart and David Beckham was a mere international superstar rather than global megastar.

Bradford is about to host a live version of Carmen with full Bollywood trimmings. Alfred Hickling hears how the organisers plan to get 3,000 audience members dancing in fountains
A team of bullfighters is being put through their paces, but there isn't a red cape or an ornate bolero jacket in sight. Instead, the toreadors are waving variously coloured silk scarves and prancing around as if the ground is too hot to stand on. Just as it's all seeming a bit too camp for Carmen, we reach the opera's toreador's march – and a heavily amplified Indian dhol beat kicks in. Suddenly it all makes sense: this is a rehearsal of Bollywood Carmen, an ambitious mash-up of Bizet, bhangra and Britain's biggest water feature.

Neighbours
As I said last week, I’m really enjoying Neighbours these days. The fallout from the accident has continued to make for interesting soap. Now, I don’t know anything about epilepsy or its symptoms, so I can’t say if the show is being medically accurate about Andrew’s illness, but it’s dramatically compelling to watch.
I see a lot of comments about Andrew being ‘stupid’ for not taking Aidan’s advice and telling people about his situation, but his behavior makes perfect sense to me. Andrew has always been one to avoid problems. His father is repeatedly telling him he needs to be tough and he can’t even talk to Chris and his friends because they won’t have anything to do with him following the accident. Risking his health might be stupid, but it’s realistic.
What isn’t so realistic,...
