Fifty-one years ago, director Tobe Hooper and his cast and crew spent a blisteringly hot Texas summer working to bring us one of the greatest horror films ever made, the 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (watch it Here)… and to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the film, legendary drive-in critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs is writing a book about the making of it!
During an interview on the Mistress Harley podcast (note: that link is for adults only), Joe Bob revealed, “I have just signed a contract with Dark Horse, which is mostly known for their comics, but they also do books. (With Dark Horse) I’m gonna do two books: we’re gonna reprint Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In, which is my original reviews … and then we’re gonna do a 50th anniversary book that’s the entire back story of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!

A familiar label for horror fans is getting a resurrection. Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new iteration of Anchor Bay Entertainment with the goal to curate a new library of films for distribution, projects that range from new release genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
The new launch comes with a pair of acquisition titles: puppet horror film Abruptio and documentary Dinner with Leatherface.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck in a press release statement. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.

In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In 1974, director Tobe Hooper brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An independent production, shot in the heat of a Texas summer, that introduced us to a chainsaw-wielding cannibal called Leatherface. And his twisted family. It was a box office hit. And quickly became one of the most popular and respected horror films of all time. So, of course, there was eventually a remake. Produced by one of the biggest, flashiest filmmakers in the industry. Directed by a music video director in his feature debut. Starring an actress from a family friendly TV show. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. But when the remake was released in 2003, it was another success story.

As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.
The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

We knew from early on that Kane Hodder (who did stunt work on Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) was doing the motion-capture performance for the Leatherface character in the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game from Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham – a game that is now available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Later we learned the names of the other mo-cap performers: Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) as The Hitch-hiker; Troy Burgess (Swedish Dicks) as The Cook; Kristina Klebe (Don’t Kill It) as new killer character Sissy; Dove Meir (Dig) as new killer character Johnny; Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween), did the mo-cap for all of the female victim characters; and Hunter C. Smith (Lucky) did the mo-cap for all of the male victim characters. But the Grandpa character is in the game as well. Who did his mo-cap performance?...

Set on August 18, 1973, director Tobe Hooper’s classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (watch it Here) was released in October of 1974 – and to mark the 50th anniversary of the events of the film and the 49th anniversary of the film itself, director Michael Kallio will soon be releasing Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. Dinner with Leatherface is expected to make its way out into the world this October.

The video which you are about to see is an account of a small group of filmmakers in the area of Austin, Texas in the summer of 1973. Their intent was to make a motion picture which was unlike anything ever seen. For them, the idyllic summer shoot became a nightmare from the low budget, sweltering Texas heat, and the treacheries from fraudulent investors. The events of that summer were led to the release of one of the most terrifying films in the annals of cinema history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (watch it Here).

The third installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, is now available to stream on Screambox. The sequel was initially released in 1990 and marked the first entry in the franchise distributed by New Line Cinema in an attempt to turn it into a new series that harkened back to the original’s gritty horror roots.
Considering the events of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, that also meant introducing a new cannibalistic clan to accompany the iconic Leatherface in the sequel. Leatherface follows a couple from California who run afoul of the Sawyer clan after a bizarre run-in with a hitchhiker at a Texas gas station. That hitchhiker, Tex, is played by The Lord of the Rings trilogy star and frequent David Cronenberg collaborator Viggo Mortensen. Mind you, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III isn’t Mortensen’s first horror role – that distinction belongs to 1987’s...

I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.
Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

Traditional fairy tales almost always have important lessons to teach. Goldilocks educates us on why you probably shouldn't just wander into a stranger's house one day and make yourself at home. Red Riding Hood alerts us to the perils of talking to suspicious strangers, even if they are wearing your grandmother's clothes. And Hansel and Gretel expand upon the "strangers are bad" lesson by teaching us that just because a house is made of candy, that doesn't mean you should necessarily start gorging on it.
Because all of these fairytales have a creepy bend to them, many, if not all, have been turned into horror films over the years. Sometimes the movies are obvious retellings of classic tales like 2020's "Gretel & Hansel" or 2011's "Red Riding Hood." Other times though, the fairytale source material is a bit harder to put your finger on.

We’ve been following the progress of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game that’s being developed by Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham for several months now, but that’s not the only Texas Chainsaw Massacre game we have to look forward to. Trick or Treat Studios has also created a board game that’s inspired by the original Chainsaw film (watch it Here) – and that board game is now available for pre-order at This Link! Hollywood didn't force Tobe Hooper to make horror movies, but he and other top genre directors may have felt a little trapped in genre jail by the Hollywood brass. Tobe Hooper began his career as more of a surrealist filmmaker with the hallucinatory hippie romance "Eggshells" back in 1969. Hooper shot the film in Austin, Texas where, at that time, the capitol city was becoming a haven for the blossoming counter culture movement, even if local law enforcement and conservative Texans weren't exactly welcoming them with open arms. Hooper's inventiveness and prowess behind the camera was already apparent in "Eggshells," especially in the more psychedelic sequences that used a lot of camera tricks and compositing to make it feel like the viewer was going through the same psychotropic journey as the hippie couple up on screen.
There were already echoes of Hooper's next film, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," in the setup for "Eggshells,...

For years, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre house set on the same plot of land it was located on when director Tobe Hooper and his cast and crew filmed the movie there in 1973. The road running past it was closed off, but civilization was closing in on it. The land where the house used to be is now taken up by a mixed-use development called La Frontera – but back in the ’90s, the house was sold and moved approximately sixty miles from Round Rock, Texas to Kingsland, Texas… where it was turned into the Grand Central Cafe and Club Car Bar, which sits on the grounds of the Antlers Hotel. Many Texas Chainsaw Massacre fan events have been held at the house over the years. But unfortunately, it has now been sold again and its future is uncertain.

Gun Interactive and Sumo Nottingham are still working on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game, getting it ready to be played by fans all around the world… but in the meantime, Gun Interactive’s Wes Keltner has also teamed with composer Jim Bonney for a creative side project. A music album called Remains, which serves as a companion to the video game.
Keltner explained on the game’s official website, “This album is a direct reflection of what Kim Henkel wrote, influenced by the events that led up to that moment and why the Slaughter family did the things they did and it’s about that town that they grew up in and around. For generations, what that town did was process meat, from cattle to pigs, entire slaughterhouses really, and just like Henkel’s commentary on modernity overall, from automation to gas price and supply issues, he applied that to this small town.

Earlier this week, we got a taste of the audio terror that’s in store for us with Sumo Digital and Gun Interactive’s upcoming asymmetrical horror title The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Now, to add to that, Gun Interactive have done something a little different with the reveal of “a one of a kind creative project” in Remains: The Companion Album to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game.
Composed by Wes Keltner & Jim Bonney, the album is described by Keltner as “a direct reflection of what Kim Henkel wrote [for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre film], influenced by the events that led up to that moment and why the Slaughter family did the things they did and it’s about that town that they grew up in and around.”

This is the true story of The Hills Have Eyes… In 1974, Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre shocked the world with its family of cannibalistic killers lurking in rural Texas. There are so many things wrong with the new Netflix movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a dull, pointless, mean-spirited, and cynical cash-grab so unimaginative that the filmmakers couldn’t even be bothered to come up with at least a variation of the title. But surely the film’s ending is one of the shabbiest and dumbest aspects of this entire fiasco.
To recap: entrepreneurs Dante (Jacob Latimore) and Melody (Sarah Yarkin) have raised enough money from investors to buy an entire abandoned town in Texas with the goal of turning it into some sort of new hipster utopia–Williamsburg South, you might say. But our protagonists didn’t cross all their t’s and dot all their i’s, leading to the eviction of one elderly homeowner and her rather large, ominous-looking companion.
It’s all too much for the old woman’s heart and she has to be rushed to the hospital.

Ready for another legacy requel? Aka, a film, much like “Halloween” (2018), that disregards the entire canon of all the sequels that have arrived since the original opened and takes place after the events of the first film, acting as a new “proper” sequel? That’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” from a filmmaking team that includes Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead“) and co-writer of the 1974 classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” Kim Henkel.

Back in February it was revealed that Ryan and Andy Tohill (directors of 2018's The Dig) would helm Legendary's reboot of Tobe Hooper's groundbreaking The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but Deadline reports that one week into the film's production in Bulgaria, the directing duo have departed the project due to "creative differences."
Deadline reveals that David Blue Garcia (cinematographer of Blood Fest and director of Tejano) has already been brought in as the new director, and that none of the footage from the Tohills is expected to be used for the film.
Garcia will direct from a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin, who penned the 2018 Black List and Blood List script Cobweb, with Fede Alvarez still producing the movie alongside his frequent collaborator, Rodo Sayagues, under their Bad Hombre banner. Legendary has overhauled production on “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” parting ways with directors Ryan and Andy Tohill over creative differences, and hiring David Blue Garcia to direct
The departure of the twin brothers came a week into production in Bulgaria. Texas-based Garcia, who made his feature directorial debut with 2018’s “Tejano,” will start the production over from scratch. “Eighth Grade’s” Elsie Fisher is starring along with Sarah Yarkin, Jacob Latimore and Moe Dunford.
The original 1974 movie followed two siblings and three of their friends en route to visit their grandfather’s grave in Texas. They end up falling victim to a family of cannibalistic psychopaths, led by the character Leatherface. Tobe Hooper shot the original film in Round Rock, Texas, with a crew of Austin film students and recent graduates. The movie debuted in drive-ins and eventually grossed $30 million. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot movie has experienced a bit of butchery when it comes to its creative coalition, figuratively, anyway. Studio Legendary has dropped its appointed directorial duo of Ryan and Andy Tohill and will essentially scrap what’s been shot during their tenure with the project.
Legendary’s planned reboot of the frequently-rebooted bellwether horror film franchise was one week into production in Bulgaria when creative differences between the Tohills and the studio came to the colossal crescendo of the studio pulling the proverbial plug and parting ways with the directors, according to Deadline. The behind-the-scenes drama reportedly played out rapidly over the last 48 hours after the financing studio was rather unimpressed with the dailies turned in by the Tohills, resulting in an immediate rejection of their vision.
Yet, in keeping with the quickness of these developments, Legendary wasted no time at all hiring a replacement director in David Blue Garcia.
