Netflix and creator Kurt Sutter have parted ways on the streamer’s western The Abandons.

Sutter, who created the drama and was serving as showrunner, left the show over creative differences with Netflix. The Abandons, set in the Oregon Territory in the 1850s, has a few weeks of production on its season remaining and will continue filming in Calgary, Alberta.

Netflix declined comment.

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to The Abandons in October 2022. The series, which stars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, centers on a group of outlier families in 1850s Oregon who come together to fight a corrupt, wealthy power that wants to force them off their land. The cast also includes Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Natalia del Riego, Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Toby Hemingway, Michael Greyeyes, Ryan Hurst, Katelyn Wells, Clayton Cardenas, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Brían F. Deadline reports that Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has exited The Abandons just three weeks before production on the first season of the Netflix series was slated to wrap. As always, the reason apparently comes down to those dreaded creative differences.

The report states that Netflix was concerned when the initial cut of the first episode came in at 1 hour and 40 minutes. It proved impossible to trim the episode down to an hour, so they decided it should be split into two. This required some additional scenes to create a cliffhanger for the new premiere, which have reportedly been written but not shot. After viewing the unfinished split episodes and part of the third, Netflix felt they “looked a bit disjointed and not propulsive enough.” A meeting between Netflix execs and Sutter to address the concerns didn’t take place before he departed.

Exclusive: This is a shocker — Kurt Sutter is out of the Netflix series The Abandons just three weeks before the sprawling Western starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson is slated to wrap production in Calgary. Sutter was the executive producer/showrunner on the series, which he also created.

For as long as Danielle Deadwyler has had to wait to take the lead in an action film like “40 Acres,” it takes far less time for the “Till” star to demonstrate the full range of her strengths. Given the kind of introduction usually reserved for the likes of Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis as a camera runs up her back, only to reveal her face after plunging a knife into an intruder on her property, it just hits differently when a Black woman is presented with such power, and though R.T. Thorne’s dynamic siege thriller has some familiar moves, it is full of fresh ideas.

The thriller film “40 Acres” will make its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The movie tells the story of a family struggling to survive in a post-collapse society and protect their farmland. Director R.T. Thorne started developing the idea six years ago but the Covid-19 pandemic also influenced his vision.

The movie stars Danielle Deadwyler as Hailey Freeman, a former soldier who now protects her rural home with her partner, played by Michael Greyeyes. Hailey’s eldest son, portrayed by Kataem O’Connor, wants a different life, causing tension. Set in Northern Ontario, the Freeman family defends their 40 acres of land from an organized militia aiming to take it over.

There is a good chance that if Danielle Deadwyler was actually faced with an apocalypse, she’d be able to navigate the chaos of it all with the same poise that she does in “40 Acres.”

At least, her latest resolute-yet-vulnerable performance certainly makes the case for it. Alongside the great Michael Greyeyes, she gives this post-apocalyptic family drama a sense of gravity just as she is able to leap into action when bloody battles ensue.

Though Deadwyler has already gained acclaim for her work on everything from “Till” to this year’s “The Piano Lesson,” “40 Acres” lets her flex other genre muscles while never missing a step in her acting. Even as she’s been outstanding in the series “Station Eleven,” which was also about the end of the world, this newest project is more confined while still having plenty to chew on about civilization’s collapse.

Stephen King wrote his conspiracy thriller "Firestarter" in 1980, and it lodged itself in the mass consciousness. The novel was about a shadowy government organization called the Shop that was injecting volunteers with a mysterious drug called Lot 6. The drug imbued subjects with eerie psychic powers. The book's protagonist, Andy, was able to invade people's minds and "push" them into doing his will. 

Andy fled the Shop with his telekinetic wife, went into hiding, and had a daughter named Charlie. Charlie was born with the psychic ability to start fires with her mind. For years, Shop agents are on their tail, including an unbalanced, obsessed assassin named Rainbird. As one might predict, the story ends in a fiery conflagration between Charlie and a battalion of tanks. 

"Firestarter" was first adapted to film in 1984 by director Mark L. Lester. A young Drew Barrymore played Charlie, David Keith played Andy, and George C. Scott played Rainbird.

With production now underway and first cast photos revealed below, the creator of Sons of Anarchy and veteran of The Shield said to Tudum, “I am fascinated by the metamorphosis of good into evil. What must transpire to drive the morally sound to become the dangerously corrupt. The opening scenes of director Christian Sparkes’ The King Tide set an ominous tone: a powerful storm takes down the power lines of a small island town as a pregnant woman loses her child while her dementia-suffering mother sits nearby. In the morning, as the town takes stock of the damage and the power is restored, a surprising discovery is found in an overturned boat in the harbour: a baby girl…with the ability to heal.

Writers Albert Shin and William Woods, working from a story by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, treat the story as something of a morality tale mixed with a fable. Kurt Sutter’s upcoming western series “The Abandons” is rounding out its cast.

Variety has learned exclusively that Ryan Hurst, Michael Greyeyes, Michiel Huisman, and Toby Hemingway have all joined the Netflix series in recurring roles. Exact character details are being kept under wraps.

The series marks a reunion for Hurst and Sutter, who previously worked together on the hit FX series “Sons of Anarchy.” Sutter created the series, on which Hurst played the character Opie for the show’s first five seasons. Hurst is also known for his time on “The Walking Dead” and shows like “Bates Motel” and “Outsiders.” He has starred in films like “Remember the Titans” and “We Were Soldiers.”

He is repped by UTA and Piper Kaniecki Management.

Greyeyes has previously been in films such as “Blood Quantum” and “Wild Indian.” His recent credits include the Taylor Sheridan series “1923” at Paramount+ and the comedy “Rutherford Falls” at Peacock.

Mo Brings Plenty is looking to bring his nephew home. The actor, who plays Mo on Yellowstone, took to social media to ask for help in locating 27-year-old Cole “Coco” Brings Plenty, who is wanted in a domestic violence incident and has not been seen since the weekend.

Mo Brings Plenty posted an image of Kansas law enforcement’s official “Missing” poster, which has numerous details on Cole Brings Plenty that may be of use. He went missing on Sunday, March 31st, having last been seen that morning in his white Ford Explorer. It was also determined that his cell phone is currently off. Other specs, including his height, weight and eye color are also provided.

Principal photography has begun on the thriller 40 Acres starring Danielle Deadwyler in one of her first feature roles following 2022’s Till.

The pic is currently shooting on location in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The independent pic also stars Kataem O’Connor (The Way Home), Michael Greyeyes (1923), Milcania Diaz-Rojas (The Bold Type) and Leenah Robinson (1923).

The first time Frances Fisher’s character appears in The King Tide, she’s stooped, uncommunicative, crushed by life and perhaps by a stroke. When the main action picks up, 10 years later, she’s a glowing picture of New Agey vim and vigor, and the island where she lives has been transformed. Nobody fears illness anymore because all discomforts and injuries are relieved by the miraculous healing powers of a little girl. The small population is united and harmonious — until the little girl’s powers lapse.

In this story of strong atmospherics and well-etched types, an isolated community discovers an otherworldly source of harmony, and the North Atlantic setting is as much a character as any of the villagers. It was the “worst first,” showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas told TheWrap. “Rutherford Falls,” her sitcom about two friends at a crossroads, was the first Native American television show run by a Native person. But after Peacock canceled it last year after two seasons, she became “the first Native American to have their show canceled,” she said.

Along with Hulu’s “Reservation Dogs,” “Rutherford Falls” spearheaded a wave of Native TV shows at least partly created and written by Native creatives following decades of Indigenous invisibility and crude stereotypes.

In the 1923 season 1 finale, there’s a well-written little nugget of dialogue spoken by breakout character Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) when she tells her father, with conviction, that she “believes in right now.” While inspiring, that affirmation sticks out because of the inherent dramatic irony.

Yellowstone supercreator, Taylor Sheridan, who only half a decade ago barely had one show to his name, now helms nine television shows, all in varying degrees of production. 1923 Episode 6

Even the most steadfast, diehard Taylor Sheridan fan must admit, that as much of a creative force he has been in the past five years, at times, it can feel as if he is spreading himself too thin.

That was the feeling last episode of 1923 mustered. It was by no means a poor episode, rarely does he write those, but it certainly felt like a long episode. Much like season 5 of Yellowstone felt in the first half of the season, there are so many moments that feel as if the audience is just… oh… say… sitting on top of a lifeboat in the middle of an endless ocean awaiting for the rapture of rescue or some sort of sweet release.

Paramount+’s 1923 season one episode six begins by catching up with Teonna (Aminah Nieves) who’s on the run after murdering two abusive nuns and escaping the boarding school. Teonna’s now traveling with Hank (Michael Greyeyes) and they’ve made it to his small home, along with his flock of sheep.

Hank thinks Teonna needs a boy’s name as part of her disguise and she suggests Hank Jr. since that’s what the white men do. Hank prefers Joe and Teonna agrees.

Teonna changes into Hank’s son’s clothes and they burn everything she brought with her from the U.S. School for Native Americans. That is, except for the Bible. Hank fears the white man’s God will turn them to salt if they anger him.

1923 finally returns with episode 5 this week. The Yellowstone prequel left off with Spencer Dutton finally receiving the news of his brother’s death. After this shocking revelation, Spencer will travel to Montana with his wife, Alexandra. Meanwhile, the Duttons struggle to keep the ranch afloat back home, and Teonna ventures out on her own after fleeing the horrific boarding school. Christian Sparkes’ drama The King Tide, starring Frances Fisher and Lara Jean Chorostecki, has wrapped production in Newfoundland.

The indie’s ensemble cast includes Clayne Crawford, Alix West Lefler, Aden Young, Michael Greyeyes and Ryan McDonald. The King Tide is set in a small island fishing village that faces civil war after a child with special powers is discovered in its midst and some villagers believe the child has been sent for a larger purpose.

Fisher, whose credits include Titanic and Watchmen, also appears in The Sinner, which shot in Nova Scotia, also in Atlantic Canada. Chorostecki, who earlier appeared in Sparkes’ second feature, the rural crime thriller Hammer, more recently starred in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley.

Sparkes shot the film based on a screenplay adapted by Albert Shin and William Woods, and from a story by Ryan Grassby and Kevin Coughlin.

The first major awards ceremony of the year took place tonight, with The Gotham Film & Media Institute hosting the 32nd Annual Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. Leading the pack of winners was Everything Everywhere All at Once, which picked up Best Feature, while its star Ke Huy Quan picked up a trophy, alongside Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Gracija Filipovic (Murina), Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), Todd Field (Tár), All That Breathes, and Happening.

Often, the shows we cover here at TV, Interrupted have been off the air for quite a while. We're here for the Hannibals, the Wonderfalls, and even the Carnivàles. But every now and again, a fresh cancellation feels too acutely unfair to ignore, and some shows are worth celebrating -- and pitching to new networks -- before the dust has even settled. "Rutherford Falls" is one of these rare cases. News of the Peacock series' premature demise just broke on Friday, and while its cast and crew are still sharing their own statements about its ending, I'm already falling back into a rewatch of one of the most underrated comfort watches of the past few years.

"Rutherford Falls" has been cancelled. The Native American-led sitcom set in a fictional small town has aired two seasons at Peacock, but today TVLine reports it won't get a third. This is frankly heartbreaking news for anyone who was following the sweet, clever comedy, which is one of only a small handful of American TV shows ever made by and about Native American people. But all hope isn't lost, as series co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas has shared her intention to find a new home for the series if possible.

The series was made by Ornelas, a Navajo writer and filmmaker, along with star Ed Helms and "Parks and Recreation" and "The Good Place" creator Michael Schur. Unfortunately, though, "Rutherford Falls" never seemed to have the visibility of Schur's other shows, and remained a hidden gem for its two-year run.

Rutherford Falls was critically acclaimed and hailed for its Indigenous representation both on camera on behind-the-scenes. Despite the rave reviews, sources have said there was a real lack of viewership, prompting Peacock to cancel the series. Sierra Teller Ornelas, who co-created Rutherford Falls with Ed Helms and Mike Schur, commented on the cancellation in a statement.

“it’s been an honor to introduce the best of Indian Country to the masses,” Ornelas’ said, adding that she and the other producers “will be exploring other platforms” for Rutherford Falls to continue. The series originated at Apple TV+ where it was in development. It landed at Peacock in turnaround.

Peacock will not be ordering a third season of Rutherford Falls, its comedy series co-created/executive produced by Sierra Teller Ornelas, Ed Helms and Mike Schur. The cancellation of the show, starring Helms and Jana Schmieding, comes two and a half months after the Season 2 premiere June 16. In a statement following the decision, Ornelas indicated that the series will explore finding a new home on another platform.

The critically acclaimed series, hailed for its Native representation both in front of and behind the camera, landed at Peacock in turnaround having been originally developed at Apple TV+. Its cancellation follows Peacock’s decision in late June to scrap Schur’s high-profile Field of Dreams TV series reboot a month before start of production.

“Rutherford Falls” has been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned.

The single-camera comedy series aired two seasons on the NBCUniversal streaming service. The first 10-episode first season aired in 2021, while the eight-episode second season aired in June 2022. The cast included Ed Helms, Jana Schmieding, Michael Greyeyes, Jesse Leigh and Dustin Milligan.

Per the official logline, the show follows “lifelong best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and Reagan Wells (Schmieding), who find themselves at a crossroads – quite literally – when their sleepy town gets an unexpected wakeup call.”

As the show begins, the town of Rutherford Falls decides to remove a statue of Nathan’s ancestor, which drives Nathan to begin a campaign to save it. But Reagan, a member of the fictional Minishonka Nation, campaigns against it, as his ancestor was known for attacks on her people during the founding of the town.

Peacock will not return to Rutherford Falls.

The NBCUniversal-backed streaming service has canceled the comedy series from showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas and starring Ed Helms after a two-season run.

Created by Ornelas, Helms and Mike Schur (The Good Place), Rutherford Falls marked a breakthrough series for Native representation onscreen and in the writers’ room.

The cancellation arrives nearly three months after Peacock dropped all eight episodes of the show’s sophomore season. While Peacock does not release traditional viewership data, season two of the comedy starring Helms, Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes has a rare 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. (Season one is also certified fresh with a 92 percent rating.)

Isaac is a rising talent who starred in back-to-back films released in July. She made her feature film debut starring in Don’t Make Me Go for Amazon Studios. Directed by Hannah Marks, it follows a single father (John Cho) diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain tumor who takes his 16-year-old daughter, Wally (Isaac), on a road trip to meet her estranged mother.

Isaac then co-starred opposite Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien in the Searchlight Pictures feature for Hulu, Not Okay. In the comedy satire written and directed by Quinn Shepard, Issacs plays Rowan, a young adult dedicated to societal change. Her next projects include a short film and a TV series.
