Fans of Downton Abbey are cordially invited to the third motion picture from Focus Features and Carnival Films. The third entry will follow the recent installment, Downton Abbey: A New Era. The most recent outing from the popular British drama had been released back in 2022. Our own Chris Bumbray would mention in his review of A New Era, “Show mastermind Julian Fellows has written this as fan service, and it shows. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking to finally get into Downton Abbey, this is a bad place to start as it not only assumes you’ve seen every episode, but it assumes you know them well. It’s strictly for fans, but I’m willing to bet there are still a lot of those out there.”

Just when you thought it was safe to forget which fork goes with which plate, Focus Features has announced a return to Downton Abbey. Currently titled “Downton Abbey 3” (surely a “Colon Something Something” is coming) this is the third theatrically-released feature film in the franchise that first launched on British television in 2010.
Series creator Julian Fellowes, Oscar-winning writer of Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park” (a very “Downton”-ish film), is writing the script. Simon Curtis, who directed “Downton Abbey: The New Era” in 2022, is back on board. His other work includes “My Week With Marilyn,” and “Woman in Gold.”
The film will boast Paul Giamatti, reprising the part of Harold Levinson, seen in the fourth season Christmas special from 2013. (That appearance won Giamatti an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor.) Also new to the film franchise are Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. When we meet some actors in comedies, we form a particular opinion about their acting skills and whatever they are capable of. For example, there’s nothing more suitable for each other than Adam Sandler and romantic comedies. But if you see him playing in Uncut Gems you’ll see that he is much more than you give him credit for.
The same goes about, for example, Emily Blunt. Despite the fact that she has been in a handful of rather serious movies, the first role that comes to mind when thinking about the actress is without doubt her role of Miranda Priestly’s assistant in the Devil Wears Prada.
Yes, she has come a long way since that, earning her an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, but there’s a movie with her in a leading role that can be easily chosen as the one where she gave her best performance.

Editor’s note: Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age writer Julian Fellowes has written a heartfelt salute to his friend and colleague, the producer Ileen Maisel, who died in London on February 16 aged 68.
Ileen Maisel was born in Los Angeles, California, where she was raised. In fact, her father had moved there from Alabama to work in retail sales, so she had no immediate help with a career in show business, but it was clearly enough that she breathed the same air as the great filmmakers of the past and present. It is no surprise to learn that by the age of 15 she was working for the entertainment journalist Rona Barrett.
From then on, she embraced, bathed in, and generally loved the film industry until the end of her life. There was never much doubt as to where she was headed and she was still young when she entered the industry.

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the original Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard. (Credit: Mark Mainz/Carnival Film & Television Limited/MGM+) Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver. The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James. “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.” Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that ...

Before “Succession” set Emmy Awards records for its fourth and final season, it had a much more humble start. Its first season earned only five nominations, including three above-the-line bids for Drama Series, Directing, and Writing; it took home one for Jesse Armstrong’s season finale script. From those beginnings, it broke out in Season 2 with 18 nominations, winning seven including Best Drama Series.
Another HBO drama, “The Gilded Age,” is poised to have a similar awards path from a first season underdog to second season juggernaut. Folks may not realize that the Julian Fellowes series about the nouveau riche in 1880s New York City was nominated for and even won an Emmy for its first season for its period production design by Bob Shaw. Now that its second year just wrapped with a string of its best episodes yet, might it emerge triumphantly at the 2024 Emmys like Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon...

Christopher Nolan has made a career for himself for his unconventional narrative structures of storytelling. His 11 films have ranged from psychological thrillers to science fiction epics to “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and have garnered a total of 36 Academy Award nominations, five of which for Nolan individually. With his latest directed epic “Oppenheimer” breaking box office records and gathering massive awards buzz since its release on July 21 by Universal Pictures, let’s break down Nolan’s five Oscar nominations for three of his movies.
Nolan’s first recognition at the Oscars came for his second feature “Memento,” based on his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story “Memento Mori,” both released in 2001. The psychological mystery thriller written and directed by Nolan stars Guy Pearce as a man with anterograde amnesia and short-term memory loss as he tries to solve the murder of his wife. [This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Gilded Age.]
In HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age, the character of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) offers a solitary glimpse into the life of the Black upper class in New York City in the 1880s. Yet in season two, that contextual lens is expanded when the secretary and aspiring journalist, just one generation removed from slavery, ventures to the South and witnesses both the progressive educational strides made by and for African Americans at the dawn of the establishment of historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the social prejudices that threaten their existence.
“Peggy gets to explore so many different textures of the Black world this season, from going to Tuskegee, to meeting Sarah Garnet and seeing the community organizing that was happening during that time, and getting to see a Black social gathering for the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was one of the first in the series,...

On paper, For All Mankind and The Gilded Age don’t have a lot in common. One is a decades-spanning alt-history exploration of the space race on Apple TV+; the other is a lavish HBO historical drama set in the 19th century from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. But it doesn’t matter if you are the commander of a mining colony on Mars in another version of 2003 or own a Pittsburgh steel mill in 1883; if workers are mistreated, they will organize.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 7, “Wonders Never Cease.”] Tragedy befell the Van Rhijn and Forte households in The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 7. The penultimate episode of the season saw a death in the family and the shocking loss of the family fortune. Here, executive producers Julian Fellowes and Sonja Warfield explain to TV Insider why these hardships were necessary. It feels like Ada’s (Cynthia Nixon) happiness was taken away just as quickly as it came. After falling quickly in love with Reverend Luke Forte (the endlessly endearing Robert Sean Leonard), the newlyweds were dealt a heavy blow with his cancer diagnosis in Episode 6. In Episode 7, his health quickly declined, leading to his tragic death near the end of the episode. Agnes (Christine Baranski), Marian (Louisa Jacobson), and the household staff rallied around Ada and Luke in their time of need, providing shoulders to cry on when he was lost.

“I don’t understand. Are you and Mrs. Astor friends or rivals?” Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) asks her mother in a recent episode of The Gilded Age. “The two are not exclusive,” Bertha (Carrie Coon) responds without missing a beat.
Bertha struggled in the first season to be considered without disdain. Now, she is the master of this game, going up against high-society maven Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) rather than courting her attention. The exchange between mother and daughter sums up how the ongoing opera wars are turning a frenemy dynamic into a socialite feud. In doing so, the HBO series from Julian Fellowes has hit a glorious stride worthy of the Sunday night slot, tapping into an irresistible mix of petty quarrels, lavish parties, and captivating couture.

I love The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey. I’ve watched every episode of both shows more than once. I’ve seen all of the Downton Abbey movies. I’ve visited the set of The Gilded Age, recapped it every week it airs, and have interviewed practically every star and creator of it. Since The Gilded Age Season 2 premiered in late October, I’ve been rewatching Downton Abbey (again) to keep the Julian Fellowes vibes flowing as I await my weekly Sunday meeting with the Van Rhijns and the Russells on E. 61st Street. While simultaneously tuning into these upstairs-downstairs dramas, one thing has become clear: The Gilded Age has lapped its predecessor. Classism is Fellowes’ favorite topic to dramatize. Nearly every show he’s ever made has been an exploration of class divides within a given social setting of yesteryear. But it’s Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age...
