Paxton Whitehead, the prolific and acclaimed actor whose career stretched from 17 Broadway productions, a recurring role on the hit 1990s sitcom Mad About You and a memorable turn as a snooty professor who takes an instant disliking to Rodney Dangerfield’s crude self-made man in 1986’s Back to School, died June 16 at a hospital in Arlington, Va. He was 85.
His death has been confirmed by his son Charles Whitehead, with many friends and colleagues sharing their memories on social media.
Actor Dana Ivey wrote: “We first worked together in My Fair Lady in 1964, and the last time was in Importance of Being Earnest in 2010 — friends for 59 years. I loved him so. Heartbroken.”
Tony-nominated for his performance as Pellinore in the 1980 revival of Camelot, Paxton, born in English village of East Malling, made his Broadway debut in a short-lived production of Ronald Millar’s The Affair. His next Broadway show — Beyond the Fringe...

At 20 years old, Gaten Matarazzo is already something of a Broadway veteran. The New Jersey native was only 9 when he made his debut in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, a few years older when he appeared in Les Misérables and then, just last year, took over the role of “Jared Kleinman” in the final Broadway cast of the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen.
Still, even theatergoers who had followed his career from the beginning couldn’t help but be caught off guard by his performance in Tony Award–winning director Thomas Kail’s current revival of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler dark, funny and musically lush classic Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. As the young orphan Tobias, Matarazzo is on stage for about 25 minutes of the musical’s just-shy-of-three-hour running time, and even alongside Broadway heavyweights Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, the Stranger Things star more than holds his own.

When people decide to get into theatre, the audience is typically a major reason why they do it. For as personally gratifying it is to deliver a well-crafted monologue, belt out a brash 11 o'clock number, or nail a complicated tap dance routine, the reason all that work is worthwhile is getting an audience to applaud, to laugh, to cry, to gasp, or whatever you are performing is hoping to elicit from the people in the house. This is particularly true in musical theatre, where shows are literally designed to have designated moments for the audience to shower the performers in applause.
Anna Kendrick was a bona fide theatre kid, appearing on Broadway at the early age of 12 in a stage adaptation of the 1956 movie musical "High Society" (which in turn was a musical adaptation of the 1939 play "The Philadelphia Story"). Laura Osnes, who has starred in such Broadway musicals as Bandstand, South Pacific and Bonnie and Clyde, is disputing reports that she was fired from a one-night benefit concert in East Hampton, NY, for her refusal to get a Covid-19 vaccine.
Osnes had been scheduled to perform at East Hampton’s Guild Hall in the August 29 production of song selections from a planned Broadway revival of the musical Crazy for You directed by Susan Stroman. Last week, the New York Post reported that Osnes had been fired from the show for refusing to get vaccinated.
The actress says the report was inaccurate. In an Instagram post, Osnes claims she withdrew from the production after being informed that safety “protocols had changed.”
“I was disappointed but responded that I would have to withdraw, as I have not yet gotten the vaccine,” Osnes writes. (See the full post below.)

'The Maria Callas of American musical theater,' as Opera News has called her, referencing both her crystalline voice and dramatic, expressive intensity, Melissa Errico is an actress, singer and author. First known for her starring roles on Broadway, her latest album, Sondheim Sublime, was called by The Wall Street Journal 'The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded.' Nothing in her work has been more constant than her association with Michel Legrand. Having starred in his sole Broadway show, 'Amour', she went on to collaborate with him on the iconic album 'Legrand Affair'. After his death in 2019, she was asked to write his eulogy by The New York Times - where she is a frequent contributor- and was then invited to become the sole American performer to participate in the extraordinary two-day memorial to Legrand held in April at Paris' Le Grand Rex Theatre, work that led one critic to announce that,...

Melissa Errico is one of the most reliable theatre divas in contemporary musical theatre. With her fierce belt and a knack for finding the most interesting moments in music, it's no surprise that she's released an album of Sondheim music. The surprise in Sondheim Sublime is which style of Sondheim she chooses not the sly, sharp, witty Sondheim, but the bittersweet, thoughtful songs that sometimes get lost in the shuffle.

The current revival of “My Fair Lady” marks the fifth time that this “perfect” musical has graced the Great White Way. Emmy nominee Lauren Ambrose of “Six Feet Under” makes her Broadway musical theater debut as Eliza Doolitle, the Cockney flower girl who is turned into a society lady by Professor Henry Higgins. She is a strong contender to win at Sunday’s Tony Awards and, in so doing, would be the first actress to take home Broadway’s highest honor for one of the best roles in musical theater.

Eliza Doolittle in “My Fair Lady” is a dream role for any soprano. The part allows the actress to showcase broad comedy, don lavish gowns, and croon Lerner and Loewe classics like “I Could Have Danced All Night.” But the role is no a favorite of the Tonys: no actress has ever won for playing Eliza. Now, 62 years after the musical’s Broadway debut, Lauren Ambrose may reverse the curse at long last.
The original 1956 production of “My Fair Lady” starred Rex Harrison and newcomer Julie Andrews. The show was a hit and claimed six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Lead Actor in a Musical. But in a shocking twist Andrews lost Lead Actress to Judy Holliday in “Bells Are Ringing.”
Award show misfortune followed the role to the big screen when Audrey Hepburn was snubbed by the Oscars for the 1964 film version. Andrews won the Best Actress Academy Award for “Mary Poppins.
