Update, Writethru, 3 Pm Pt: Period culture clash comedy Pride was the big winner at the British Independent Film Awards which took place at London’s Old Billingsgate this evening. Pathé’s Matthew Warchus-directed ensemble took three prizes including Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for Imelda Staunton and Best Supporting Actor for new Bond cast member Andrew Scott. Brendan Gleeson was named Best Actor for John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary and Gugu Mbatha-Raw was Best Actress for drama Belle. Best Director was Yann Demange whose ’71 was the most nominated film going into the evening. (See below for the full list of winners.) The BIFAs, as their name suggests, have a decidedly indie bent and are an important date on the British awards season calendar in that they tend to honor UK films that might not get as much recognition at, say, the BAFTAs.

You may have forgotten that Will Smith and Jay-z were planning to remake Annie, with Willow Smith taking the coveted lead part. And it’s only fair that the thing should slip your mind. Our last update on the film was from that long ago and forgotten time of June 2011, when both producers were hoping to get Emma Thompson on board as their screenwriter — yes, the actress.
I can’t figure out if she took the offer, or if that story was even true, but: 13 months later, TheWrap tells us Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought a Zoo, The Devil Wears Prada) will give Annie‘s screenplay a rewrite. The extent of her revisions have not been made entirely clear, though it’s said she’ll “draw on both the hit Broadway musical and the comic strips”; that makes me think her work will be somewhat large-scale. It’s one hard-knock jo–

Michael Elliott ("Like Mike," "Brown Sugar") has been hired to perform re-writes on the "Waiting to Exhale" sequel entitled "Getting to Happy" at Fox 2000 says The Hollywood Reporter.
Terry McMillan, who wrote both the 'Exhale' and 'Happy' novels, penned the initial draft of the 'Happy' script. Lori Laken Hutcherson then came onboard and is now being replaced by Elliott.
Elliott is currently performing scribe duties on "Guarding Cole," "Looking for Jimmy Lee," and a contemporary re-imagining of the opera "Faust" for MTV.

In February, the talk was on whether the upcoming sequel to Waiting To Exhale would at all be affected by Whitney Houston's passing, and if the project would actually continue ahead. With this evening's news, it looks like the answer to that question is yes! No surprise at all... not to me anyway. To be based on author Terry McMillan's book (just as the original film was) Getting To Happy, it's been announced that Michael Elliott has been hired to pen the screenplay for the filmed version of the novel - although, as we've continuously updated you on the progress of the film, you'd know that McMillan was said to have been...

Michael Elliott has been tapped to work on Getting to Happy, Fox 2000’s sequel to the 1995 movie Waiting to Exhale.
Exhale, directed by Forest Whitaker, was an adaption of a Terry McMillan novel and starred Angela Bassett, Whitney Houston, and Loretta Devine and tracked four black women and their relationships. McMillan wrote the initial draft for the sequel, based on his book, and Lori Laken Hutcherson previously worked on the script. Happy will only make a busy Elliot even busier.
