Sure, 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins aren’t to be sniffed at. But the remarkable thing about Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is that it should have been nominated for more. Only one of the cast was nominated for an Oscar across all three films — that was for Best Supporting Actor for Sir Ian McKellen in 2002 for “The Fellowship of the Ring” — while there were a few other curious snubs that, in hindsight, just don’t make sense. So, there was actually more room to nominate this rightly-heralded trilogy of astounding films. With that in mind, here are five more Oscar nominations “The Lord of the Rings” should have landed.
Best Original Score: “The Two Towers”
The music of “The Lord of the Rings” has gone down as one of the best scores ever committed to film. Howard Shore‘s adored score is so top drawer it leaves you clamoring for more.

In 2004, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” became the film with joint-most Oscar wins of all time with a whopping 11 victories, matching the total tallies of both “Titanic” and “Ben-Hur.” Those 11 Academy Awards capped off a hugely successful trilogy of movies that collectively snagged 28 Oscar nominations and 17 wins in total. But yet… Peter Jackson‘s film series, adapted from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, is so, so good that, well, it could have won more. That sounds greedy and over the top, of course, but if you take a look at each film’s nominations, it’s actually very feasible that any one of the three films could have turned the bid into a win. So, with that in mind, here are five Oscar nominations that “The Lord of the Rings” films could and perhaps should have turned into victories.

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

Before Karl Urban was in "The Boys," he played characters who love swords and shields as much as Billy Butcher loves killing supes. There's his role as Skurge in "Thor: Ragnarok" and as Éomer in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, as well as the box-office dud "Pathfinder" or any of his various appearances in the Riddick films as Vaako. The reason for Urban's casting in this niche probably has something to do with the two television series that make up a large part of his early career: "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess."
Although Urban first appeared in "Hercules" as Cupid in the season 3 episode "The Green Eyed Monster," he's better known for the recurring character Julius Caesar in the spin-off "Xena". The actor also played two other guest roles in "Xena": the father-drugging psychopath Mael and the nomadic human Kor.

With the Costume Designers Guild (CDG) having announced its 2021 nominations, we can now look at the Best Costume Design category at the Oscars with a much clearer picture of which films will get nominated and even which movie will probably win.

Gold Derby’s odds favor Jenny Beavan to receive her 11th Oscar nomination and third win for her work on Disney’s “Cruella.” As of this writing 26 of 27 Experts have it predicted to be nominated, 18 of whom have it down to win over this year’s below-the-line powerhouse “Dune.” Only three Experts have picked the latter to win, while three others still have “Spencer” to win despite it being snubbed by CDG, two picking “West Side Story,” and one backing “House of Gucci.”

Chinese Fantasy extravaganza “Asura” has broken few records in the past weekend, unfortunately not the kind of records to be proud of.
The film is allegedly the most expensive Chinese film ever made, with the cost of a hefty 750 million Yuan (Us$113.5 million). But “Asura” has also turned into the biggest loss ever recorded as it took in just over Us$7.4 million at the opening weekend and by Sunday night the film was removed from theaters. With the estimated loss of Us$106 million “Asura” is therefore a contender as fifth biggest flop in movie history worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo).
Based on Tibetan Buddhist mythology and rich in special effects, “Asura” is backed by Alibaba Pictures, together with Zhenjian Film Studio and Ningxia Film Group, and it was meant to be the first installment of a franchise trilogy, in the style of Hollywood epics such as The Lord of the Rings.

With large Hollywood studio films making hundreds of millions of dollars in China alone it seems insane that the highest budget Chinese film made until recently was Stephen Chow's The Mermaid for $60 million. The Mermaid has made $553 worldwide so far. The average budget for a tentpole Chinese films is around $50 million.
Asura is an fantasy film loosely based on a Buddhist mythological realm of "pure desire" that becomes threatened by a lower heavenly kingdom, cue epic battles and a $100 million budget.
To mitigate the risk of the film's epic production budget China is tapping Oscar-winning winning talent and Hollywood veterans. Peng Zhang is directing and has 20 years of experience as a stunt coordinator on films like Ant-Man, Kingsman, 47 Ronin, Kick-Ass, and The Chronicles of Riddick. There’s no shortage of celebrities who are willing to sell themselves out. Whether it’s for an infomercial, autograph signing or otherwise, the list goes on an on. But one celeb, Sir Ian McKellen, stared $1.5 million in the face and turned it down. The Daily Mail is reporting that McKellen was offered the whopping sum to dress up as his Lord of the Rings character, Gandalf, but said no, leaving his dignity in tact. “I was offered one-and-a-half million dollars to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing but I had to go dressed as Gandalf,” McKellen told the Daily Mail. “So I said, ‘I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.’” That wedding was reportedly for Silicon Valley billionaire Sean Parker, one of the co-founders of Napster and the first president of Facebook. The 2013 nuptials were held in the woods of Big Sur,...

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. The Oscar for Best Costume Design is sometimes one of the hardest to predict. Manuel here. The Costume Design Guild has announced that they’ll be celebrating Naomi Watts with the Lacoste Spotlight Award when they announce winners for their film, TV and commercial awards on February 17th. While they bill the award as honoring an “actor whose talent and career personifies an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design,” their choices so far (previous recipients include Anne Hathaway, Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry and Emily Blunt) have yet to really reflect the award, no? Whither Keira, Nicole, Tilda or heck, even Colin Firth? The man can wear a sweater (among other things), you know.
Anyways, we should really focus on the positive and be thankful Watts was able to bounce back so quickly from that horrible triple-whammy of Movie 43, Adore and Diana. Let's just hope she can keep up the momentum going. And so...

This castle is under siege and there’s little I can do about it. I’m standing on the outskirts of a scene that is filled with panic. Dust hangs heavy in the air of the castle’s Great Hall. Its people - dressed in period garb courtesy of renown costume designer Ngila Dickson (the Lord of the Rings trilogy) - scramble for safety, dodging the bits of stone that fall to the floor. At any moment, one of the many spires that hang upside-down from the ceiling, like stalactites in a cave, could snap crushing anyone below. The Ottomans are attacking the castle, I’m told. And these frightened people - including Mirena (Sarah Gadon of Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral) - are awaiting the return of Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans, Fast & Furious 6). On cue, the doors to the Great Hall swing open and Tepes makes his entrance. Mirena greets him.

When we heard that Sean Parker, one of the Internet masterminds behind Napster and Facebook, married singer-songwriter Alexandra Lenas in a lavish ceremony in Big Sur, CA, in June, our curiosity was instantly piqued - and once we saw photos of the over-the-top affair, it was clear that we were looking at one of the biggest, craziest, most far-fetched theme weddings we'd ever seen. The event, which Sean revealed was "a performance-art project” set in a modern-day enchanted forest, cost over $4.5 million and featured a nine-foot tiered wedding cake, a pen of bunnies, and famous guests like Emma Watson, Olivia Munn, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, and the founders of Twitter, Facebook, and MTV, all dressed in Tolkien-esque garb by Lord of the Rings costume designer Ngila Dickson. It got us thinking: what other celebrities have tied the knot in elaborate theme weddings? From David and Victoria Beckham's woodland-themed affair...

So, this is what $4.5 million gets you.Vanity Fair just released brand new photos from Napster co-founder Sean Parker's "Lord of the Rings"-themed wedding to Alexandra Lenas back in June ... and it was a ridiculously over-the-top affair. The guest list included names like Emma Watson, Sting, Lars Ulrich, Allison Williams, Olivia Munn, and Kyle MacLachlan, who all had "Tolkien-esque garb" custom made for them by "Lord of the Rings" costume designer Ngila Dickson. And while it was previously reported he dropped $10 million on the ceremony, Parker now calls that figure "made up."He does admit to spending $4.5 million to transform the Big Sur wedding site into a Middle Earth fantasy land though -- and had to shell out another $2.5 million in fines to the California Coastal Commission. To see more photos from the extravagant affair, head over to Vanity Fair's website. Newlyweds Sean Parker and Alexandra Lenas are feeling the heat after their June 1 wedding in Big Sur, Calif., made headlines, the Silicon Valley mogul says. "My wife and I should be happy right now, elated to have been married," Parker wrote in an email to the U.K.'s Guardian. "Instead," he writes, "we are being spat upon by complete strangers while walking together on the street, cursed at by a waiter in a restaurant who had read bogus media reports about our wedding, and told by complete strangers that we should get our divorce papers ready since our marriage clearly isn't going to last,...

Their nuptials may not have been a themed affair, but Sean Parker and Alexandra Lenas's wedding portrait is nothing short of magical. The couple, who tied the knot in front of 300 family and friends Saturday at The Ventana Inn in Big Sur, Calif., released a photo that shows off the bride's Elie Saab gown and the groom's fine attire, which was selected by Academy Award-winning costume designer Ngila Dickson. The event was rumored to be one of Silicon Valley's most expensive weddings, reportedly costing $9 million. Parker is the co-founder of Napster and founding president of Facebook, and Lenas is a New York-based singer and songwriter.

Entrepreneur and former Facebook president Sean Parker is now a married man.
Parker and singer-songwriter Alexandra Lenas were married Saturday (June 1) in Big Sur, Calif., in a ceremony said to have cost up to $9 million. Parker can afford it: His net worth is estimated at $2 billion.
Lenas wore an Elie Saab gown, and Oscar-winning costume designer Ngila Dickson ("The Lord of the Rings") designed outfits for Parker and the entire guest list of 300 -- although Parker tweeted a couple months back that it wasn't a theme wedding. "Just because we don't trust our guests to dress themselves properly doesn't mean we want them to look like #GoT characters," he wrote at the time.
The reception featured musical performances by Loreena McKennitt and The Good, The Bad and The Ginger. He also had a team of builders construct backdrops for the wedding, which combined with the flowers and plants he brought in totaled more than $1 million.

Ryan Reynolds might not have been freaked out about the initially lukewarm reception that greeted the first "Green Lantern" trailer, but he was certainly frustrated. After that footage dropped in November, there was precious little new multimedia to offer the public and prove that Warner Bros. really did have a winning comic book adaptation on its hands. "I just want it out there faster than Warner Bros. can unfortunately produce it," Reynolds told us in late March at CinemaCon. "If anyone's rushing it, it's me."
It was a few days later at WonderCon, though, that Reynolds felt the tide begin to turn — not only for fans, but for himself. "The first time I saw it was just breathtaking. I think the first time it...

Has it been determined if the rings will speak in the film? The rings will not speak. How will members of the corps know when their personal battery is low? Will there be a way that the ring will communicate with them? Yeah. But not through speech? Will it be visualized? Yeah. We saw it blinking when it was time for the hologram. Yeah. Are you guys trying to set a base of look with the Green Lantern? Is there an idea or aesthetic that you want to set up for future DC films?...

In early August 2010, I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans to visit the set of the big screen adaptation of Green Lantern. Throughout the week we'll be posting transcripts of the on-set roundtable interviews with the cast and crew. After the jump you'll find the first installment, an interview with star Ryan Reynolds. So have you done enough press for this movie yet? Ryan Reynolds: Well, not that much. Not really. We did a little at Comic Con. It’s such a closed off set. This is actually kind of the first. We had a group of people yesterday and today. Did we catch you pre blue screen today or mid blue screen? Or are you done? Ryan Reynolds: I just like to look beautiful sometimes. [laughs] No, we are blue screen all day. I just didn’t come in the motion capture suit because I didn’t want you to laugh.

During the “Green Lantern” set visit last August, we spoke to Green Lantern himself—Ryan Reynolds! He even showed up still wearing his motion capture suit, in which the suit is all CGI for the film. It was in the last days of filming for the "Green Lantern."Here is the synopsis of the film: In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot,...

[1] In early August 2010, I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans to visit the set of the big screen adaptation of Green Lantern. After returning from the set, I recorded a video blog with Frosty from Collider [2] -- an in depth discussion about what we saw during the visit and our early impressions. Keep in mind, we didn't see any completed computer effects rendered footage. My big takeaway from the visit is that Warner Bros isn't just making a superhero movie, but that they are making a big space opera. The scope is huge and very ambitious and I'm excited to see if they can pull it off, and if mainstream America are willing to accept the abundance of hard sci-fi elements. I can tell you, I'm excited (despite some of the early unfinished special effects shots). Watch our set visit video blog embedded after the jump. And throughout...

The Ch'p to my G'nort, fellow Astorian and nerd Rick Marshall at MTV SplashPage scored a solid exclusive today by debuting a line-up of some of awesome space cops we'll be seeing in Green Lantern. You can see it here in high-res.
In addition to Tomar-Re, Kilowog and Sinestro who've been seen in their own character one-sheets, now's the time for super deep cut nerds to (and I believe this is the medical term) squee to their heart's content.
If you don't know who some of these emerald warriors are, let's go from left to right and make an introduciton.
Boodikka: A tough-cookie from the planet Bellatix. She first appeared in Volume 3 of the Gl series. (The current comics run is Volume 4. Volume 1 is the really old school Golden Age stuff with Alan Scott, Volume 2 is the cheesy-but-fun Silver Age stuff that introduced Hal Jordan, The Guardians, Sinestro and Qward.

In this week's Green Lantern comic issue, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns presents a clearer image of Corps member Tomar-Re from the live action film, as well as an introduction to the character. It's All In The Details... is a mantra Tomar-Re lives by which has aided him in becoming an honored and highly respected Green Lantern. It's also a mantra that the filmmakers, like production designer, costume designer Ngila Dickson and visual effects supervisor Jimmy Berney have taken as their own. Producer Donald De Line and director Martin Campbell have assembled an amazing corps. Growing up on the planet Xudar, Tomar-Re comes from a peaceful avian race that focuses their efforts on the arts and sciences instead of war. His nature to examine everything has led the Guardians of the...

I am still waiting to be blown away by Green Lantern. I guess it’s still far off from getting a perfect adaptation. Still, the thought of Ryan Reynolds in the lead role and Martin Campbell directing, you would expect something to blow you away and make you say, ‘this is the movie we have been waiting for.’ The first two minute and twenty seven second trailer seems to just underwhelm and I can’t put my finger on why that is. Still, it has a cool Iron Man/Star Trek vibe too it and all the blockbuster elements for a fun film, but I guess I am expecting something epic. Maybe I should lower these expectations. That being said, Warner Brothers has released the first trailer for the film along with a new piece of promo art.

I’ve been a Green Lantern fan for quite a while now, about 15 years, so when the folks over at Warner Bros. Pictures asked me if I would like to go to New Orleans to visit the set back in August I said “Hell Yes!”For those of you who are not familiar with the upcoming movie “Green Lantern” the film follows a test pilot who is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. Now since this is a preview and not the full set visit piece, I am allowed to say a few things before the full set visit piece can go live on the site. More Green Lantern news DC fans! The first film to immortalise Hal Jordan hasn’t even hit our screens yet, but of course in the manic, mass produced world of Hollywood this seems to make little difference, as news has hit that writing for Green Lantern 2 is already underway!
We’ve known for a couple of months now that a treatment for the sequel has been floating round Hollywood, but now Michael Goldenberg has been hired to get the script ready for, I’d hazard a guess, a late 2011 shoot. This isn’t the first time that Goldenberg has been involved in the Lantern project, having been brought in to work on the script during production of the first installment – set to hit cinema screens in June next year.

Hey gang! Some more details from Warner Bros. upcoming comic book adaptation of Green Lantern have been revealed! There may be a few things that are considered spoilers so watch out.
The image that we saw of Green Lantern on the cover of EW is still a work in progress. From the neck down is basically what we see in the film. The CGI is still not finished in the image. The mask was obviously photoshopped in. The real mask will be a physical mask and not look like it's been painted on his face. 25 alien Green Lanterns, each with a different energy signature, were designed for major and minor roles in the movie. The film will mostly be based mainly Secret Origins. A key-scene in the film will feature all the 3,600 Green Lanterns! Parallax's origin is different from the comics. Fans of Sinestro will be happy to know that the mustache is untouched.

The San Diego Comic-Con is less than a week away, which means the Hollywood studios are trotting out extra peeks at their geek properties. This includes Warner Bros, who recently revealed the first glimpse of Ryan Reynolds suited up as the Green Lantern for the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
The Green Lantern costume — pictured right, click to enlarge — is created using entirely CGI and is being rendered in post-production now that filming has completed on the June 17, 2011 release. Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings costume designer Ngila Dickson created the concept.
I’d expect the first footage or a teaser trailer to premiere at Comic-Con, which will hopefully give fans an idea of how the powerful alien ring generates Hal Jordan’s eye mask and six pack abs.
Reynolds stars alongside love interest Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard as the villainous Hector Hammond, Tim Robbins as his father Senator Hammond, Mark Strong...
