It’s a chilly February evening on the Paramount lot as Kelsey Grammer transforms into Frasier Crane for the first time in nearly two decades. It’s an emotional moment on set, both nostalgic and anticipatory. The sets are new, as is every cast member besides Grammer. But behind the camera, legendary director James Burrows shares some continuity with Grammer — having been there from the character’s 1984 beginning on “Cheers.”
Even months later, with the 2023 “Frasier” now on the air (via Paramount+), Grammer gets choked up when asked about what returning to the character — and having institutions like Burrows (one of the original “Cheers” creators) back on board — means to him.
“It’s a piece of personal heaven for me that Jimmy Burrows is still in my life,” Grammer says, his voice cracking just a bit. “And I will always feel that way about him. He’s really helpful. And...

“The Wonder Years” reboot will not return for a third season at ABC, TheWrap has learned.
The network has chosen to cancel the sitcom starring Elisha “Ej” Williams, Dulé Hill and Saycon Sengbloh, which ran for two seasons. The cancellation comes just over a month after the coming-of-age drama aired the finale for its sophomore season, which saw the Williams family head to Disneyland.
Debuting its first season in September 2021, the reimagining of the ’80s series of the same name similarly centered on the Black middle-class Williams family during the late ’60s in Montgomery, Al. Don Cheadle narrated the series an adult Dean Williams while Elisha “Ej” Williams played 12-year-old Dean onscreen.
In May 2022, controversy came over the show as executive producer and director Fred Savage — who starred in the original series — was fired after multiple allegations of inappropriate conduct. While specifics regarding the misconduct were not revealed at the time,...

Exclusive: ABC has opted not to proceed with a third season of The Wonder Years. The news comes a month after the reboot of the classic coming-of-age comedy wrapped its Season 2 run on the network.
Originally slated for a midseason return, The Wonder Years‘ second season was pushed to summer, hinting at the show’s potential fate as summer has traditionally been used as a destination for broadcast scripted series that have either been canceled or are likely to be.
The Wonder Years ranks as the lowest-rated and least watched ABC series this summer, behind the network’s unscripted slate. It also would rank last among ABC’s series that aired during the 2022-23 season.
There are no renewal decisions on ABC bubble series The Rookie: Feds and Home Economics and a pickup one on The Good Lawyer pilot. As Deadline reported last month, their fates remain in limbo amid...

ABC has pushed the second season premiere of comedy series The Wonder Years to summer 2023. The network says a specific premiere date will be announced at a later time.
The comedy, which had originally been slated to return in midseason, wasn’t included in ABC’s midseason schedule released earlier today.
Although it will be awhile before we see a second season, ABC announced additional guest casting. In addition to previously announced Patti Labelle, Wayne Brady, Tituss Burgess, Donald Faison, Phoebe Robinson and Bradley Whitford are among the actors set for guest-starring roles.
Inspired by the 1988 series of the same name, The Wonder Years is an original coming-of-age comedy that tells the story of the Williams family during the late 1960s. The series is narrated through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean, as he navigates growing up in a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, and the friendship,...

ABC is shifting the sophomore season of “The Wonder Years” to the summer. The comedy, which had originally been announced to return in midseason, wasn’t included in ABC’s midseason.
Instead, new sitcom “Not Dead Yet” is filling the one available slot on Wednesday’s four-comedy lineup (the only sitcom block currently on the network), launching at 9:30 p.m. Et behind “Abbott Elementary”. With no room for any other half-hour, that necessitated “The Wonder Years” move to summer. A premiere date will be announced later.
Although the show won’t return for a bit, ABC confirmed a list of guest stars for Season 2. Besides previously announced guest Patti Labelle, the show will also welcome Wayne Brady, Tituss Burgess, Donald Faison, Phoebe Robinson and Bradley Whitford, among others.
Brady will play Melvin, described as “Bill’s older brother, a blowhard who is super-successful and insufferably smug about it, including being favored by their father.

“Will & Grace” co-creator Max Mutchnick admits he and David Kohan had no idea there was such a high demand for the series to return. “We’ve written it small, and we’ve thought of it small,” says Mutchnick, “and maybe that’s been the thing that’s worked for us because we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.” The NBC sitcom starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally originally ran from 1998-2006, and it returned in 2017 after 11 years for what was initially supposed to be a 10-episode run. CBS has canceled comedy “Superior Donuts” after two seasons.

It’s official — CBS is not picking up a third season of Superior Donuts, its multi-camera workplace comedy starring Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch.
After a decent ratings start last spring, goosed by a plum lead-in from The Big Bang Theory, Superior Donuts was renewed for a second season with some casting changes, including the addition of Diane Guerrero, and got a full-season Season 2 pickup last fall.
CBS had been looking to make changes on Monday where the network was once the dominant force with hit comedies and CSI: Miami at 10 Pm. CBS’ fortunes on the night have declined over the past couple of years, hitting a low point this season. Superior Donuts was the lowest rated of the three returning CBS series on Monday which were in a renewal contention, averaging a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating (most recent)
While the cast of the sitcom has been well received, the show didn’t quite gel together.

CBS’s “Superior Donuts” is tackling immigration issues in what may be the series’ most relevant episode ever. Monday night’s episode, “The ICEmen Cometh,” was inspired by star Diane Guerrero’s own experience with her family and deportation.
“We learned about Diane’s story when we first talked to her about joining the show, and we were struck by how brutal it was to see this hot-button political issue play out on a personal level, where a family gets torn apart and there’s nothing they can do about it,” said executive producer Bob Daily.
In the episode, Guerrero’s character, Sofia, enlists her pal Franco (Jermaine Fowler) to help hide her undocumented brother Rafael (Erik Rivera) when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement starts conducting raids in their uptown Chicago neighborhood. The Ice presence has everyone on edge, including donut shop owner Arthur (Judd Hirsch), whose store is where Franco secretly hides Rafael,...

The cast and creators of NBC’s “Will & Grace” revival gathered for a panel discussion at Paleyfest on Saturday, March 17. Stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally were on hand, as were creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick and director James Burrows, who has helmed every single episode of the series. The event was moderated by Dan Bucatinsky, who has guest-starred twice on the show (once in 2000 and once in 2018) as a persistent suitor Will can’t seem to get rid of. Listen to their entire 45-minute Q&A above.
Interest in the revival was first piqued by a nine-minute online reunion scene released in 2016 in support of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Mullally recalled that upon reading the script she emailed Mutchnick and asked, “Why can’t we just do the show again?” While the video didn’t end up winning the campaign for Clinton,...

CBS has locked up Orange Is the New Black‘s Diane Guerrero! The actress is joining the cast of Superior Donuts as a series regular in Season 2, TVLine has learned.
Guerrero, who will be introduced in the sitcom’s Oct. 30 premiere, will play Sofia, a young Uptown gentrifier who parks her food truck, which serves healthy, socially conscious breakfast foods, in front of Arthur’s old-school donut shop. Though Arthur assumes she’s an entitled millennial, she’s actually a hard-working, enterprising, self-made woman who has poured every penny into her food truck business, which she plans to turn into an empire.

CBS’ new comedy “Superior Donuts” is part of a new wave of multi-camera sitcoms with something to say.
Comedian Jermaine Fowler and executive producer Bob Daily are taking advantage of that mandate, infusing their new show with biting commentary on everything, including gentrification, police brutality, Muslims in America, and the Trump era.
“Superior Donuts” began life as a stage play in 2008, written by playwright and actor Tracy Letts. The story, about an Arthur, an aging donut shop owner, and his new assistant, a young African-American man worried about his neighborhood’s fast gentrification, eventually moved to Broadway. The New York Times compared the play to a 1970s comedy, so it only makes sense that CBS decided to adapt the show.

CBS’ newest sitcom “Superior Donuts” doesn’t shy away from dealing with current events and hot button issues, and if president-elect Donald Trump were to get mad about it enough to tweet about it, the producers would take it. “If we were to incite a tweet war with the President of the United States, we probably would not turn down the publicity,” executive producer Bob Daily joked during the show’s panel at the Television Critics’ Association’s press tour in Pasadena Monday. The show has plans to do episodes about gun control, the gentrification of a Chicago neighborhood and breaking Muslim sterotypes.

Yes, we know "The Odd Couple" is more than just a movie starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattheau. How much more is still rather surprising, I imagine, to anyone who hasn't been a devout fan of franchise since its inception in 1965. What began as a play written by Neil Simon and starring Walter Matthau and Art Carney turned into the aforementioned film with Matthau and Lemmon, then later morphed into two ABC sitcoms in the '70s and '80s as well as an animated cartoon, various stage productions performed across the country — including a version with, of all things, women! — and now a new sitcom on CBS starring Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon. The focus here will be specifically on the film to TV adaptation, as the new iteration's creators have signified this is what they drew from for inspiration. "We’re going back to [...] the brilliant original Neil Simon source material,...

Mega-slob Oscar Madison and uptight neat freak Felix Unger once again pair up Thursday night at 8:30, when CBS launches its reboot of “The Odd Couple,” which has over the decades taken form as a play, a movie, a classic television series and a not-so-classic TV revamp, “The New Odd Couple.” TheWrap recently spoke to Matthew Perry (who plays Madison), Thomas Lennon (who plays Unger), executive producer Bob Daily and Garry Marshall, who developed the original series for television. Topics included what the new show hopes to bring to the “Odd Couple” legacy and a not-gay but “vaguely fruity” Felix.

The latest version of "The Odd Couple" will premiere tonight at 8:30 on CBS, a few weeks shy of the 50th anniversary of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison's Broadway debut. In the five decades since, Neil Simon's play has proved remarkably flexible, capable of working as a movie and a sitcom, as well as a play, with different actors as compulsive cleaner Felix and unrepentant slob Oscar, even at times change the characters' race or gender. But the CBS version is the first to suggest the concept has lost its elasticity. It feels like nothing so much as a sock that won't stay up on its own, but which you can't throw out because you've had it around forever. This time around, Matthew Perry is Oscar and Thomas Lennon is Felix. Producer Bob Daily ("Frasier," "Desperate Housewives") has made a few nods to the changing era — Oscar is now...

After spending 10 years in the role of Chandler Bing, Matthew Perry’s return to a multi-camera sitcom could have been daunting.
But the actor maintains that working on CBS’ The Odd Couple reboot has allowed him to check an item off the bucket list.
“It’s been a dream come true to play Oscar Madison,” Perry said Monday at the Television Critics’ Association winter press tour in Pasadena. “It’s been big shoes to fill, but we’re playing it differently.”
But that’s not to say Perry doesn’t get nervous, even after more than 200 episodes in front of a live audience on Friends.
