Justine Triet’s courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall” triumphed at the 36th European Film Awards, taking statuettes for best film, director, screenwriter and actress at the ceremony, which took place Saturday in Berlin. It had been previously announced that it had won the best editing prize as well.
“Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and recently took the screenplay and international feature awards at the Gothams, but was not selected to represent France in the international feature film category of the Oscars. Despite that setback, Triet said the film would still compete for other categories at the Oscars. “Now we are in the race, of course. We continue down that road,” she said at a press conference following the ceremony in Berlin.
Triet, who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur Harari, said that they had written it for Sandra Hüller, winner of the best actress award.

Hungarian director and screenwriter Ildikó Enyedi brought some art-house royalty to the Shanghai International Film Festival this week with a masterclass that focused on her process and the struggle to maintain a unique voice.
At one point in her on-stage discussion with Chinese director Zheng Dasheng, she called filmmaking “essentially a sole desperate cry, hoping to be heard by others.”
Enyedi’s voice has certainly registered and been heard at Europe’s major film festivals. She won the Camera d’Or in Cannes in 1989 for best debut feature “My 20th Century,” saw her 1994 film “Magic Hunter” play in competition in Venice and she won the top prize Golden Bear in Berlin in 2017 with “On Body and Soul.”
Her subjects have ranged from music to the human condition in its dry absurdity (“On Body and Soul”), to Stasi agents in the old East Germany (TV series “Balaton Brigade”). But her process...

International co-production and co-production markets around the globe will not be the same now following the news that the internationally respected German producer-distributor Karl Baumgartner has died at the age of 65.
Known affectionately by friends and colleagues alike as ¨Baumi¨, Baumgartner hailed from the South Tyrol, but was ¨ at home¨ in different countries and cultures, working with film-makers on projects located in some of the seemingly most inaccessible or logistically nightmarish parts of the planet.
Hearing him recount the making of Bakhtiar Khudojnazarov’s Luna Papa at one of the countless co-production panels with his tales of the shooting being stopped by floods washing the set away, the outbreak of civil war and being evacuated by the Red Cross floods, one often wondered whether he purposely looked for such challenges.
Not to speak of the challenge of putting such delicate and time-consuming co-production structures together involving tried-and-tested production partners, public funders and broadcasters from across Europe and beyond...

Not to speak of the challenge of putting such delicate and time-consuming co-production structures together involving tried-and-tested production partners, public funders and broadcasters from across Europe and beyond...

The Cut
Director: Fatih Akin
Writer: Fatih Akin
Producers: Fatih Akin, Karl Baumgartner, Reinhard Brundig, Fabienne Vonier
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Tahar Rahim, George Georgiou, Akin Gazi
It’s when he worked within his working trilogy that Fatih Akin has provided us with his deepest, thematically most daring material to date. With the promise of a Tahar Rahim embodying the spirit of a muted, Sergio Leone character type, there are more than enough reasons to believe that The Cut will make us forget about his messy, 2009 comedy Soul Kitchen.
Gist: Final installment in his Love, Death and the Devil trilogy, will focus on the devil — that is, the evil inherent in mankind.
Release Date: Following in the shoes of The Edge of Heaven, this could find itself in the Main Comp at the Cannes Film Festival.

While the rest of his cohort have fallen by the wayside or been absorbed into the Hollywood system, the film-maker has stayed weird, as his new movie of erudite vampire love reveals
The word "hipster" invariably crops up in discussions about American film-maker Jim Jarmusch, not least because he looks the part. He is tall, lean, often wears shades and has a famous shock of hair that started turning silvery grey in his teens; his basso drawl completes the uncanny resemblance to a certain Hollywood great, which inspired Jarmusch to found a jokey secret society, The Sons of Lee Marvin.
Jarmusch is without a doubt the most rock'n'roll of film-makers – although he obliges you to define the term. He has worked with a lot of musicians, either as composers or as actors – Neil Young, Tom Waits, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, hip-hop producer RZA. But if you look at the breadth of Jarmusch's references,...

Beginning in 1986, the Berlin International Film Festival has presented the Berlinale Camera to film personalities or institutions to which it feels particularly indebted and wishes to express its thanks. This year, during the 64th edition of the festival, producer and distributor Karl “Baumi” Baumgartner will be awarded the prestigious Berlinale Camera.
Karl Baumgartner is one of Germany’s leading producers and independent distributors. In his capacity as producer, he has brought world cinema to German audiences expanding their horizons in terms of what cinema from abroad can provide.
In 1982, together with Reinhard Brundig, he launched Pandora Film Distribution and it developed into one of the most important companies in the field of art house cinema. Pandora Film discovered filmmakers such as Andrej Tarkovsky, Jim Jarmusch, Sally Potter, Kim Ki Duk, and Aki Kaurismäki, as well as many others. With Jane Campion’s The Piano in 1993, Karl Baumgartner celebrated his first great success as distributor. It was followed by Emir Kusturica’s Palme d’Or winning Underground (1995), executively produced by Pandora Film.
As a producer, Karl Baumgartner has participated several times in the Berlin International Film Festival – in the Competition with the films Super 8 Stories by Emir Kusturica (out of competition, 2001), My Sweet Home by Filippos Tsitos (2001), Sam Garbarski’s Irina Palm (2007), and Jasmila Žbanić’s Na putu (On the Path, 2010). His most recent contribution to the Berlinale Competition was as co-producer of Kebun binatang (Postcards from the Zoo, 2012) by Edwin and Layla Fourie (2013) by Pia Marais.
The Berlinale Camera will be awarded to Karl Baumgartner at 4.00 pm on February 8, 2014 at the CinemaxX 9. It will be followed by the film Boheemielämää (La vie de bohème, 1992) by Aki Kaurismäki who, together with Festival Director Dieter Kosslick, will give a speech in Karl Baumgartner’s honor.
The Berlinale Camera has been awarded since 1986. Until 2003, it was donated by Berlin-based jeweller David Goldberg. From 2004 through 2013, Georg Hornemann Objects, a Dusseldorf-based atelier, sponsored the trophy, which goldsmith Hornemann redesigned for the Berlinale in 2008: Modelled on a real camera, the Berlinale Camera now has 128 finely crafted components. Many of these silver and titanium parts, such as the swivel head and tripod, are movable.

Director says vampire film featuring Tilda Swinton faced long struggle for funding in difficult financial climate before arriving at Cannes
Jim Jarmusch said today that the Cannes film festival screening of his new film, the vampire romance Only Lovers Left Alive starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, was the culmination of a seven-year odyssey.
"The reason it took so long," said Jarmusch, "is that no one wanted to give us the money. It took years to put it together. Its getting more and more difficult for films that are a little unusual, or not predictable, or don't satisfy people's expectations of something. Boy, I wish I had an answer why it took so long.
But we're here now."

Only Lovers Left Alive
Director/Writer: Jim Jarmusch
Producer(s): Reinhard Brundig, Jeremy Thomas
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin
Jarmusch redefined the samurai film with Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, so now the question is, can he do the same with the vampire film? The Limits of Control was a forgettable oddity, this on paper remains a mystery and unfortunately the genre has been overcooked….but an impenetrable, commanding performance from Tilda Swinton is almost a given.
Gist: A story centered on two vampires who have been in love for centuries. The story follows Adam (Tom Hiddleston), an underground musician reunites with his centuries-old lover (Tilda Swinton) after he becomes depressed and tired with the direction human society has taken. Their love is interrupted and tested by her wild and uncontrollable little sister (Mia Wasikowska).

Coffee & Cigarettes director Jim Jarmusch is set to make his debut in the horror genre with an as-of-yet untitled vampire film, according to Screen Daily. Jarmusch, who describes the film as a "crypto-vampire love story", has cast Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton and Mia Wasikowska in the leading roles as well as John Hurt. The film will begin principal photography in early 2012 and will be produced by Jeremy Thomas and Reinhard Brundig. On a quick side note, I love that Fassbender is so busy right now. He absolutely shines in every film he's been in thus far. Hell, he even elevated Jonah Hex.

If anyone can break the currently stale and sparkling mold of vampire flicks, it's independent and uncompromising American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch so we couldn't be more excited about the news that Jarmusch is set to helm a toothy tale starring Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender, and Mia Wasikowska as his vampires and John Hurt in a featured role.

As the vampire craze slowly declines, it will take some truly intriguing attachments to get our attention these days. The Playlist brings us an update of just such a project: Jim Jarmusch‘s proposed vampire film, which will star Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.
It’s not a huge surprise that Fassbender or Wasikowska, two of the most in-demand actors around would be eager to jump onboard a production helmed by such a respected auteur as Jarmusch, and Swinton is known for choosing projects that veer from mainstream vehicles like Michael Clayton (for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar) to the brilliant, Italian-language I Am Love.
Alongside the Neil Jordan vampire project Byzantium, Jarmusch’s film, described as a “crypto-vampire love story” (whatever that means) and set in Detroit and Tangiers, sounds like one to look forward to. It already features John Hurt in a “featured role,...
