Bret Easton Ellis is finally taking a seat in the director’s chair.
After his slated feature directorial debut “The Deleted” was pivoted into a web series on the since-defunct social platform Fullscreen, famed author and screenwriter Ellis will direct horror film “Relapse.” Ellis penned the script about a man (played by “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn) who witnesses a brutal death during a drug party and is thrust into an unsteady existential crisis upon entering rehab. "River's Edge" was one of the most important independent films of the 1980s. Directed by Tim Hunter from a screenplay by Neil Jimenez, it tells the soul-deadening story of a group of teens who cover for their friend after he murders another of their friends. What makes the movie especially disturbing is the teens' indifference; when they're taken to view the nude corpse, which the killer has dumped at the title location, most of them gaze at it with a galling lack of emotion.
"River's Edge" earned raves from critics and won Best Picture at the 1988 Independent Spirit Awards. It launched the careers of Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye, and Daniel Roebuck, and went a long way toward spurring Dennis Hopper's late '80s comeback. It is a scathing experience, one that leaves such an indelible mark you need not revisit it. You'll never shake the image of Danyi Deats...

This episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Adam Walton, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here’s the text of the video script:
I think 1991 shaped my life before I even realized it did. Aeon Flux, Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains It All, Liquid Television, The Addams Family, People Under the Stairs, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, and of course, Eerie, Indiana.
All those shows and movies I just mentioned, I can still enjoy just the same as I did then. A few of them actually get repeat viewings throughout the year. There was something cool about these shows made for kids and teens around this time– they weren’t dumbing it down. Kids felt like they were watching something that they could experience for themselves– it was something that felt real. These...

Hollywood was in the midst of its Brat Pack fervor when the director/screenwriter team of Tim Hunter and Neil Jimenez jolted moviegoers with "River's Edge." It was the grimy, dead-souled antithesis to John Hughes' peppy tales of suburban woe. The Northern California high schoolers in Hunter's film are dead-enders who, aware of their paltry worth to society, have little value for human life. When their friend John (Daniel Roebuck) claims he's murdered his girlfriend Jamie (Danyi Deats) and takes them to see her nude corpse, which he's discarded like a dog toy next to a riverbank, they do not recoil in horror. They are at most dumbstruck, and at worst eager to aid John in covering up the crime.
We should be shocked by their lack of revulsion, but Hunter lets us hang out with these kids for a good 15 minutes before taking us to Jamie. They're future burnouts...

Neil Jimenez, who won three Indie Spirit Awards for writing River’s Edge and writing and co-directing The Waterdance, has died. He was 62. His sister, Kathleen Serio, said Jimenez died December 11 of heart failure in Arroyo Grande, CA.
Jimenez won his first Spirit Award in 1988 for his screenplay to River’s Edge, the Tim Hunter-directed thriller whose stacked cast included Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye and Dennis Hopper. The 1986 pic about a group of California friends who get ensnarled in a murder and cover-up also won Best Feature at the Spirits that year and was a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
The Sacramento native went on to pen or co-write the scripts for Where the River Runs Black (1986) and The Dark Wind (1991) and the story for Bette Midler period drama For the Boys (1991). Jimenez’s next project was The Waterdance, which starred Eric Stoltz as...

Neal Jimenez, the writer-director behind a string of acclaimed films in the 1980s and 1990s, including the thriller “River’s Edge” and his directorial debut, the semi-autobiographical drama “The Waterdance,” died Dec. 11 from heart failure, his family has announced. He was 62.
Paralyzed in a hiking accident while he was a student at UCLA in 1984, Jimenez paved the way for disability representation with “The Waterdance,” the 1992 drama starring Eric Stoltz as a writer struggling to recover after being paralyzed from the neck down. Based in part on his own recovery, the film was released to critical acclaim and won Best First Feature and Best Screenplay at the 1992 Independent Spirit Awards.
Jimenez also wrote the screenplays for “For the Boys” (1991), “Sleep With Me” (1994) and “Hideaway” (1995 among other things.)

“Call It!,” an app that empowers the U.K. film and TV workforce to call bad behavior out, has entered into a partnership with ITV Studios.
The app enables the workforce to record incidents of bullying, harassment and discrimination quickly and anonymously, without fear of reprisal or repercussion. It also provides easy access to employers’ ‘Dignity at Work’ policies and procedures for formal reporting, and signposting to third party support and resources. It also allows companies and productions to monitor the safety and wellbeing of their staff by asking, ‘How were you treated at work today?’ and gathering anonymous data regarding experiences of bullying and harassment.
After a pilot and proof of concept phase, the app launched to the film and TV market earlier this month. ITV Studios are the first major partner to sign up and will begin introducing the app to its U.K. companies.

I wish I wasn’t such a sucker for books like this but c’mon, who can’t resist picking up a book called this, with a cover like this, and featuring the blurb ‘father vs son for the fate of the Dcu’. That was enough to reel me in, but when I saw that Mark Waid was writing this, I was all in. I tend to find that Waid always understands his characters so well, so he can take a throwaway editorial edict and actually make it not only work but also add something extra to the mythology.
Let’s be honest, though, Batman has been in conflict with Robin from the start. He fell out with Dick Grayson, has had a rocky relationship with Tim Drake, struggles to control Damian Wayne, and let’s not get started on Jason Todd.

At a certain point in the 1980s, there was no bigger movie star than Matt Dillon. Exploding into the cultural stratosphere with a trio of popular S.E. Hinton film adaptations, the young actor transitioned from heartthrob to dynamic leading man in the space of a decade. Roles in Gus Van Sant’s masterful Drugstore Cowboy, Cameron Crowe’s Singles, and Tim Hunter’s The Saint of Fort Washington followed, each one wildly different from the other.
Thirty years later, Dillon finds himself at the Telluride Film Festival as the director of the breezy, illuminating documentary El Gran Fellove, which tells the story of Francisco Fellove Valdés, the underappreciated Cuban scat singer and showman. The film also highlights the “Feeling” Movement that came out of Cuba in the 1940s, a jazz-inspired musical shift of which Fellove was essential. The musician––like many Cuban artists––would soon move to Mexico, where he found an abundance of success.

To mark the release of Over the Edge, out now, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
Over The Edge – available now on Blu-ray from Arrow Video – is an incendiary ode to teen rebellion that quickly became a Gen X/punk-rock touchstone, and a key influence on filmmakers such as Richard Linklater and musicians like Kurt Cobain (who often cited it as his favourite film). Armed with a classic ‘70s rock soundtrack, energetic direction by Jonathan Kaplan (White Line Fever) and an intelligent script by Tim Hunter (River’s Edge) and Charlie Haas (Matinee), Over The Edge still packs a righteously powerful punch today, and makes its worldwide Blu-Ray debut with brand new bonus features interviewing the cast and crew.

It is hard to know where to begin and what to say first when it comes to Dennis Hopper, both on screen and off. As an actor he began in the late 50s with small roles in films like Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and numerous TV performances. James Dean was a hero and friend to Hopper. A great way to view Rebel Without A Cause is to watch Hopper’s intense studying of and admiration for Dean on screen in that film. Hopper was witness to so many periods of American culture, a complex masculine figure much like his friend and contemporary Harry Dean Stanton, the whiskey, cigarettes and American highway mythology follows his legacy. This mix scratches the surface of an iconic figure of 20th-century popular culture and a great artist, it is a time capsule with no linear trajectory, bending back and forth across genre and feeling.Coming...

Although it didn’t make much of a box office dent when new, Tfh guru Jonathan Kaplan’s bleak portrait of rootless suburban kids in an ’80s “model community” still packs a punch. Benefits from naturalistic and starkly credible performances from a charismatic teenage cast, several of whom went on to stardom. Co-written by Tfh guru Tim Hunter.

BAFTA has responded to criticism from an actress on its diversity scheme Elevate that she faced racist comments and was not given appropriate disability support.
In a BBC article published this morning, actress India Eva Rae – whose credits include Channel 4 TV series On The Edge and Hulu series Maxxx – described Elevate as a “PR exercise” that failed to open doors for its participants, who she says were recruited to “clean up” BAFTA’s image.
Today, the organization told us: “BAFTA Elevate was created in 2017 and has supported over 50 talented individuals from under-represented groups in progressing their careers, and to help tackle the issue of diversity in our industries as a whole. We know first-hand from very many people who have been part of the initiative that they have really benefitted from it, and for some it has been truly career-changing. The BFI, BAFTA and more than 40 other industry partners are teaming to launch an ‘Action List’ to aid the biz in pro-actively tackling bullying, harassment and racism in the workplace.
As the industry continues to ride out the wave of Covid-19-related production shutdowns and disruption, inappropriate conduct remains a key battleground despite the lack of on-set activity.
“The industry has been facing additional pressures [during the pandemic] and that has translated into challenging behaviors in some cases,” Jen Smith, the BFI’s Head of Inclusion, told Deadline. She added that different ways of working, particularly under Covid safety protocols, have led to increased tensions and in some cases poor conduct. “It’s a pressured environment anyway [being on set], and the pandemic has added further pressures, so this is a good opportunity to say ‘let’s remember, certain behaviors are not acceptable’.”

The U.K. is stepping up its awareness of bullying, harassment and racism in the workplace, with a renewed industry-wide drive to educate employers across the screen sectors of best practice methods.
The industry last rallied for these issues following the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements of late 2017 and 2018, when pan-industry guidelines were drawn up to advocate for a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment.
This time around, the BFI and BAFTA are launching a practical employer-focused Action List backed by over 40 organizations across film, television and games, including Time’s Up UK, Directors UK, Casting Directors Guild, Bectu and Coalition for Change. This is coupled with The Film and TV Charity’s new bullying support services, which will provide more immediate support for those in need.

The American Psycho author’s script, based on a series of real-life tragedies, fails the true-crime research standard
The patchy cinematic record of novelist-turned-screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis includes the classic Christian Bale-starring adaptation of American Psycho and 2013’s The Canyons, a soft-porn showcase for some of Lindsay Lohan’s best work – plus plenty more forgettable and regrettable nonsense besides. Even so, this schlocky take on a series of real-life tragedies represents a new low.
Ellis’s script, directed by Tim Hunter, is based on the largely debunked theory that a series of young men found dead in or near lakes and rivers in the American midwest between the late 1990s and the 2010s were victims of a serial killer or killers.

Q: Rules of Attraction, American Psycho and Smiley Face Killers… What do these three movies have in common?
A: All 3 were written by the awesome Brett Easton Ellis!
Q: Which is the odd one out? (Answer at the end of this review)
Smiley Face Killers. A movie that snuck up on me for sure but to see a “Produced and Written by Brett Easton Ellis” strapline on the marketing materials, well that hooked me in for sure. As a huge American Psycho and Rules of Attraction fan (Which did you prefer? Have to admit I’m more of a Rules fan) well I was mega interested in what Ellis had to offer in 2020…. Let’s do this. Smiley Face Killers you’re up…
Piss poorly written, ridiculously handsome and underdeveloped – character wise,...

Bret Easton Ellis gets top billing in the poster for Smiley Face Killers, which claims it is "inspired by true events," yet what primarily grabs my attention is director Tim Hunter. Reuniting with Crispin Glover (from the director's River's Edge) is good -- here he is concealed as a cloaked figure -- and sounds promising, as does the premise that the film is also inspired by "the twisted 'smiley face killers' conspiracy theory that has gripped the American imagination for decades," per the synopsis. Still, director Tim Hunter remains a potent force, as he proved with his somewhat loony, entirely compelling previous feature film, Looking Glass (2018). Here's what I wrote about him in my review at the time: "Director Tim Hunter first came on...

Jk Rowling stole the idea of Harry Potter from Neil Gaiman you know. Tim Hunter first appeared back in Books of Magic issue 1, January 1990, whereas Harry Potter first appeared in print in 1997. Both feature a school attending, glasses wearing English boy with a pet owl destined to be a great magician. Gotcha, Jk! Or so the urban myth goes. In reality, as all creative people know, these things bubble away for years before appearing, and Jk Rowling had been working on the ideas behind Harry Potter for several years . As Neil Gaiman himself has said, Harry Potter and Tim Hunter both in spirit come from the same source materials. In Gaiman’s case, his inspiration for Tim Hunter was T.H White’s ‘The Sword in the Stone’, about a young boy destined to grow up and become a great hero.
