Remakes have always been and will always be a tricky proposition. You could have something as pure and wonderful as 1982’s The Thing, which is objectively better than the revered Howard Hawks and Christian Nyby version, but be trapped in purgatory for way too long before it is decided that its proper and loved. There’s a bunch that are better in different ways or at least thoroughly enjoyable in their own right like John Carpenter’s masterpiece, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and of course David Cronenberg’s The Fly. While you can argue the horror vs sci fi merits of any of these movies, their quality can’t be disputed. When it comes down to what you can or can’t remake, I think the gloves are off at this point. There’s very few sacred cows left and sometimes a remake can help. Something...

When you think of Sundance movies, you usually think of quirky, optimistic or melodramatic coming-of-age stories. Films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Coda” or “The Big Sick.” But the movie that spawned the most successful franchise from its Sundance debut is none of those things. In January 2004, Sundance audiences were knocked on their collective butts by “Saw,” an out-of-nowhere horror flick from two unknown Australian filmmakers.
Director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell’s “Saw” offered a deceptively simple premise of two desperate men chained together in an empty room with little idea of how they got there or how to get out.
Starring Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, Monica Potter and a pre-“Lost” Michael Emerson, “Saw” inspired a new wave of grindhouse horror, films that reveled in old-school gore and a certain Rube Goldberg mentality to the kills beyond just attractive teenagers being picked off one by one.

Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left is regarded by many as a classic of the horror genre, and by others as one of the most vile films committed to celluloid. The 1972 film remained blacklisted in the UK, where it was banned for nearly 30 years (finally seeing an uncut release in 2008). In 2006 Rogue Pictures made the shock announcement that Craven had agreed to produce a remake of his film. At the time, many people, myself included, were worried that any remake would have to be watered down for modern audiences – especially when the majority of horror remakes at the time were being released as PG-13. When “This Is Us” premiered in September 2016, “Parenthood” had been off the air for a little more than a year. Many dubbed Dan Fogelman’s new NBC family drama the heir apparent to Jason Katims’ critical darling, which was itself a successor to his NBC family drama “Friday Night Lights.” Some even mistakenly complimented Katims for his work on “This Is Us,” assuming it was his next big-hearted tearjerker. Of course, “This Is Us” wasn’t Katims’ project, but that wasn’t the only key difference between the two shows: “This Is Us” quickly became a ratings juggernaut, whereas “Parenthood” was never NBC’s top draw, and the large ensemble cast eventually took pay cuts in order to ensure a sixth and final season could happen.
So, a little lingering irritation is understandable, even in jest — like the quippy remarks made at “Parenthood’s” reunion panel Friday night, as part of the 2022 Atx TV Festival.

Part of the cast of Parenthood reunited with series creator Jason Katims and executive producer Lawrence Trilling on Friday night at the Atx Festival in Austin.
And while excited audience members relished hearing Dax Shephard, Erika Christensen, Joy Bryant, and Monica Potter share memories, Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, and Mae Whitman were certainly missed.
Among the highlights was insight from Katims as to how the 1989 film of the same from Ron Howard and the series Friday Night Lights played a role in Parenthood‘s inception.
“I was very much inspired by Friday Night Lights in thinking about what the show could be,” Katims, who executive produced the sports drama, shared. “One thing I was enjoying about Friday Night Lights was the big ensemble cast—many, many people with different points of view. So I thought, ‘What if I did a show like that focusing on family and extended family?...

When the Emmy nominations were announced in July, one of the biggest snubs was the omission of “Better Call Saul” lead Bob Odenkirk, this after nominations for the previous four seasons of the series. Also criminally snubbed was his onscreen partner Rhea Seehorn.
The two have delivered some of the most acclaimed and layered performances on television. The fifth season saw Jimmy and Kim get entangled in the workings of a drug cartel as their relationship faced new challenges and opportunities. Now, with Golden Globe nominations looming, they both have a chance at awards redemption.
There is precedent for Emmy snubs to be honored at the Globes. Last cycle, in the drama actor category, Brian Cox scored a nom for “Succession” after missing out at the Emmys. Cox won the Globe and then got an Emmy nomination in July. However, the Globe win and Emmy nom were for the same...

Actress Monica Potter claims that she lost a chance to appear in the 1999 film The Cider House Rules because she rejected Harvey Weinstein’s advances.
Speaking to her hometown Cleveland television station Wkyc on its Let’s Be Clear show, Potter said Weinstein had tried to bed her three times, “twice in New York and once was in London.”
On two occasions, Weinstein made advances while wearing a bathrobe, she claimed. She rejected him physically, she said, taking advantage of his attire. “I belted him. I flat out belted him… I really hit him where it hurt,’ she exclaimed. ‘So yeah, I missed out on that role because of that hairy pig.”
She added: “I didn’t do something, so therefore I missed out on it. I’m not saying the person who got it did. I’m just saying I didn’t.”

“The Young and the Restless” star Sharon Case appeared in plenty of episode submissions at the 2017 Daytime Emmys, but unfortunately none of them were hers. She was the driving force of a baby-switch storyline that won a Supporting Actor Emmy for her on-screen husband at the time, Steve Burton, and that also earned nominations for supporting actresses Stacy Haiduk and Kelly Sullivan and younger actress Alyvia Alyn Lind. Case was featured in all of their Emmy reels, but she herself was snubbed for Best Actress. In fact, Case has never been nominated in the leading race despite almost a quarter-century on the top-rated CBS soap. Can she finally change that this year?
The character of Sharon Newman was created by “Y&R” in 1994 and was played briefly by Monica Potter and then Heidi Mark before Case assumed the role later that year and made it her own. She earned a...
