Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice: Michael Keaton’s character from the Tim Burton franchise was essentially summoned from across the TV talk-show landscape on Halloween with hosts on NBC’s Today show, the syndicated Live With Kelly and Mark and The Kelly Clarkson Show all dressing up as the ghost with the most.
On Thursday’s Today, Al Roker dressed up as Beetlejuice and Dylan Dreyer dressed as Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz. And on Live With Kelly and Mark later Thursday morning, Kelly Ripa took on Deetz with Mark Consuelos sporting the Beetlejuice ensemble.
Kelly Clarkson also donned a Beetlejuice costume on her eponymous daytime talk show. She kicked off the show with a spooky Kellyoke of “Banana Boat (Day-o).”
While Beetlejuice made a number of apperances on Thursday, Consuelos and Ripa changed costumes multiple times throughout this year’s Only Murders in the Building-inspired “Only Halloween in the Building” Halloween show.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared on the latest episode of the “Wiser Than Me” podcast (via People) and remembered her “excruciating” audition for “Saturday Night Live.” The Emmy winner joined the NBC sketchy comedy show in 1982 and appeared on three seasons. At 21 years old, Louis-Dreyfus was the show’s youngest female cast member at the time.
“When I was just getting started, I was part of the Practical Theater company in Chicago,” Louis-Dreyfus said. “The producers of ‘SNL’ came to see the show and they loved it, and they hired all of us to come to New York and be a part of ‘SNL.'”
She traveled to New York City with three other “complete and total unknowns” in order to audition for “SNL” by performing the first act of their comedy show. Louis-Dreyfus remembered it bombed, as the group performed “under fluorescent lights in the middle of the day in front of 20 very cynical,...

Eddie Murphy Reveals the Real Reason to Return as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Here’s What Made Him Say “Yes”! (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Eddie Murphy’s back as Axel Foley, and we’ve got Jerry Bruckheimer to thank for it! The Beverly Hills Cop producer, who practically invented action blockbusters, is why Murphy finally said “yes” to donning that iconic Detroit Lions jacket again. After nearly a decade of dodging bad scripts, Murphy spilled during a press tour for You People that Bruckheimer was the key: “When he got involved, and he started developing the script… that’s when it all started to come together.”
Let’s rewind a second. The whole Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley thing has been in movie limbo for years. Studio execs were practically throwing scripts at Murphy, but none stuck. Murphy himself admitted he read “five or six different scripts,...

As Saturday Night Live celebrates its landmark 50th season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is reflecting on her early years on the show.
The Golden Globe winner recently opened up about the “excruciating” first rehearsal with her SNL co-stars after joining the cast with Season 8 in 1982, becoming the show’s youngest female cast member ever at the time at age 21.

In the many movies, TV shows and documentaries that peer into Black America, Hollywood often leans heavy on how African Americans used music to communicate and push through decades of highs and lows in the country they call home.
But Black people love to laugh, too! Laughter is a thread that runs just as deep as music in the tapestry of the Black American cultural experience, and now a 10-part docuseries on Vice TV continues to look at that phenomenon and how it resonates with Black Comedy in America.
The third episode of the series hosted by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Chris Spencer and Ryan Davis, which aired Tuesday night, looks at the impact of classic Black ‘70s sitcoms such as The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son and Different Strokes, among others. The episode not only focuses on how those ground-breaking sitcoms paved the way for future shows like Black-ish or Insecure,...

Shrek was one of the more odd films to come out of the early 2000s, but the film was one of the most successful animated features of its time. It stayed a novel take on the fantasy film genre that broke the mold Dinsey had set up for fairytales.

Lord Farquaad, the main antagonist of the first Shrek film, met his end at the hands of the dragon that was guarding Fiona, or so fans thought. While it’s not known if the scene is canon or not, Lord Farquaad might have actually survived being swallowed whole by a dragon.

Coulda shoulda woulda — when it comes to breakthrough ‘80s comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, there’s a murderers’ row of comedians who might have taken on the lead role that eventually went to Bob Hoskins. Robin Williams, Wallace Shawn and Sylvester Stallone were reportedly considered to play beleaguered private dick Eddie Valiant, but two comedy superstars in particular wished they’d thought twice about taking the job: Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy.
According to director Robert Zemeckis on the film’s DVD commentary, he and producer Steven Spielberg had Murray at the very top of their list to play Eddie. There was only one problem — neither man knew how to get hold of the Ghostbusters star. That’s not surprising for those familiar with Murray legend. The comedian doesn’t employ an agent or manager; he instead uses an unlisted 800 number to collect his messages. Sometimes (like when Sofia Coppola...

Uncovering the Original Dark Script of ‘Ghostbusters’: How a Grimmer Vision Evolved into the Beloved Comedy Classic! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
“Ghostbusters” went from a dark, ambitious script to a comedic classic that’s haunted our hearts since ‘84. When Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis teamed up to create this film, they tapped into Aykroyd’s deep-seated fascination with the paranormal. Growing up in a family with a history steeped in spiritualism, Aykroyd was practically destined to explore the ghostly unknown. His great-grandfather hosted séances, and his upbringing was rich with tales of the supernatural.
Originally titled Ghost Smashers, Aykroyd’s vision was wild, sprawling across multiple dimensions and brimming with supernatural phenomena. Picture this: an open portal unleashing ghosts on Earth, leading to various teams of “ghost smashers” battling for supremacy. And we’re not talking about a cozy little New York firehouse to house their captured spirits; no, these...

Wesley Snipes, the actor perhaps most widely known for starring as vampire hunter Blade, is ready to unsheath a new chapter in his Hollywood career, signing with Independent Artist Group for representation.
The actor and martial artist, who reprised his Blade role to the delight of fans in this summer’s $1.3 billion-grossing Deadpool & Wolverine, has an acting career that spans over three decades and reaches across genres. The actor gained notices for his 1990s work in dramas such as Jungle Fever, his influential crime movie New Jack City, comedic fare such as To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and action flicks Demolition Man and Passenger 57.
Blade seemed like an innocuous action thriller when it was released in 1998 but the movie, exuding tough attitude and replete with one-liners, launched a trilogy that has gained in stature and influence since the final installment came out in 2004. When Snipes...

A funny thing happened to comedian Tom Papa as he prepared to promote his hysterical new stand-up special, Home Free — Jerry Seinfeld stopped by Papa’s Breaking Bread podcast. “We were just planning on talking about comedy in general,” Papa told me. “You know, just catching up with old friends.”
It was the pod in which Seinfeld walked back earlier comments about the Left killing comedy, landing Papa directly in the middle of a national conversation. As Home Free premieres today on Netflix, we discussed what happens when Seinfeld weighs in on comedy culture, the time Tom Cruise got him all sweaty before his first Letterman appearance and how the podcast revolution has put comedians right back where they started.
“The cool thing about Jerry Seinfeld is he’s not afraid to go back on things. He’s not set in stone on stuff.”

When Eddie Murphy debuted on SNL in 1980, he instantly became the show’s biggest star — in large part because of the characters he created. And it definitely was characters, as in plural, as in many more than just one. In fact, they’ve transcended era, too, as they’ve remained some of the most well-known in SNL history, particularly Gumby, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson and Murphy’s take on James Brown.
For the most part, Murphy crafted them with the help of the writing duo Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, both of whom would later play a big part in Murphy’s film career, writing Coming to America, Nutty Professor and several other of his movies.
I recently caught up with Blaustein about his time writing with Murphy on SNL, who, during our call, shared the financial advice James Brown gave Murphy, why Gumby’s creator loved Murphy’s twist...

Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had pretty mixed opinions when it came to movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches. They gave Wayne’s World two thumbs up, but called Coneheads one of the worst films of 1993. And for some reason they were massive fans of Stuart Saves His Family? Really?
But the duo’s harshest SNL criticisms, oddly enough, happened during an episode of SNL.
Siskel and Ebert appeared in the very first episode of the Lorne Michaels-less eighth season. The hook? They would be reviewing the season premiere of SNL — as in the one that was in the middle of airing. As Siskel noted during the sketch, it was “history’s first live review of a television show still in progress,” which is a pretty clever meta joke. It arguably worked far better than the episode’s central, highly-irregular conceit: that host Chevy Chase was...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Osha) found no violations in their probe of an on-set accident during production of Eddie Murphy’s comedy heist film “The Pickup,” an Osha spokesperson said on Wednesday.
“The purpose of an Osha inspection is to identify potential safety and/or health hazards in the workplace,” an Osha spokesperson said in a statement to The Wrap. “Osha conducted a thorough investigation of Armored Film LLC and the inspection did not result in violations of workplace safety and health regulations. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration has concluded an investigation into the accident on the set of the Eddie Murphy-starring film The Pickup and determined that the production did not violate safety regulations.
The agency initiated an investigation following a major two-vehicle crash on the set of the Amazon MGM Studios film in April that injured several crewmembers. On Wednesday, an Osha spokesperson said that a “thorough investigation” of Armored Films LLC and an inspection that concluded Oct. 17 “did not result in violations of workplace safety and health regulations.”
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment.
The April 20 crash took place when an armored Gmc C6 truck attempted to perform a precision immobilization technique on a BMW X5 during a stunt sequence, the Georgia State Police stated in April. But the truck’s brush guard got caught on the BMW’s wheel well, causing both cars to lose control and eventually flip.

Movie stars are still very much a factor in Hollywood, but they seem a little less special in our social media age. Even those that don't have active accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, and the like seem a little more human now that anyone can whip out their smartphone and record, say, Timothée Chalamet popping into a coffee shop for an espresso. We just don't get awestruck by stars the way we used to.
Those of us born before the proliferation of the internet remember a time when stars felt larger than life. Warren Beatty, Barbra Streisand, and Burt Reynolds were like American royalty. When you went to the movies and saw them in a trailer for a new motion picture, you knew you'd be right back in that theater (or one close by) to see that sucker in a few months. And if you were promised two big stars for the price of one,...

Seth Meyers confessed to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that he hasn’t gotten around to seeing Saturday Night yet, so maybe it’s no surprise that none of the original cast’s characters appears on his rapid-fire countdown of all-time Saturday Night Live favorites.
Who did make the cut? Here are the five greatest SNL characters ever, according to Meyers…
5 Debbie Downer Play
Presented without comment from Meyers, Debbie Downer was Rachel Dratch’s signature character. The name became synonymous with that person who manages to find doom in even the happiest news, bringing down the entire group in the process. The character’s first appearance may hold the SNL record for most crack-ups in a single sketch. “I always loved when things went ‘wrong’ on the show,” Dratch said in the SNL oral history Live From New York, “because it reminds you the show is really live.

As Saturday Night Live marks its 50th anniversary, Seth Meyers is fondly looking back at his onscreen love story.
The Late Night host called Bill Hader‘s long-running ‘Weekend Update’ character Stefon “my one true love” as he listed his top five favorite SNL characters in honor of the NBC sketch comedy show’s milestone season.
He listed the rest of his top five as Will Forte‘s MacGruber, Kate McKinnon‘s Colleen Rafferty, Eddie Murphy‘s Buckwheat and Rachel Dratch‘s Debbie Downer, as he appeared on Watch What Happens Live.
Meyers’ number-one pick should come as no surprise after he married the “city correspondent” in Hader’s 2013 farewell episode, breaking up Stefon’s wedding to Anderson Cooper in an epic sketch filled with all of the character’s bizarre references, including a Ben Affleck cameo.
Following his 2005-’13 run on SNL, Hader has returned to ‘Weekend Update’ as Stefon on a few occasions.

It’s been 16 years since Amy Poehler was a cast member on Saturday Night Live, but that also might be the exact same amount of time that’s passed since the average SNL “fan” actually watched it.
From 2001 to 2008, Poehler carved a place for herself among the comedy greats with her powerful, high-energy performances on SNL, hosting the venerated “Weekend Update” segment and playing celebrities ranging from Hillary Clinton to Michael Jackson. A veteran of the Chicago improvisational comedy scene who co-founded the comedy group The Upright Citizens Brigade that turned into one of the most influential training and performance institutions in entertainment, Poehler had an immense impact on her collaborators at SNL, namely her recurring current partner Tina Fey. During her tenure, Poehler also left an equally strong impression on the SNL fandom, who considers her not only one of the show’s all-time best cast members, but one...

“I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not” was a cute catchphrase to launch Weekend Update on an unsuspecting nation, but it also turned out to be prophetic. While the fake news desk made stars of comedians like Dennis Miller and Norm Macdonald, it has also been anchored by performers who, for lack of a better term, are no Chevy Chase. And so, no one would blame you if you can’t remember a single joke from these five obscure Weekend Update anchors.

Charles Rocket was the main Weekend Update anchor for Season Six, but halfway through, the show introduced Matthius as his co-anchor. Why?
“We need a woman out there!” Matthius guessed with a shrug during a Vulture interview. “It wasn’t like I insisted.”
While the gig didn’t make Matthius a star, she was an eye-witness to Eddie Murphy taking over the show. “I have...

Michael O’Donoghue’s second go-around as a writer for Saturday Night Live didn’t go as well as the first. Brought back after Lorne Michaels and the original cast headed out for parts unknown, O’Donoghue, the show’s new head writer, wanted to give it a flaming Viking funeral. In other words, “he wanted to destroy the show,” explained Tim Kazurinsky in the SNL oral history Live From New York.
One reason O’Donoghue believed the show should die, according to Mr. Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O’Donoghue: He thought the cast was horrible. He particularly hated Kazurinsky for his relatively tame, unassuming style (O’Donoghue believed Kazurinsky’s Second City was well past its prime) and deemed most of the cast “losers” and “shit.” There were only two performers O’Donoghue liked — Eddie Murphy, for obvious reasons, and Christine Ebersole.
Ebersole is more of a puzzle.

As the hype train picks up steam for the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary party, it’s worth remembering that even the show’s 15th birthday bash featured a star-studded audience. To open the big show, Lorne Michaels chose first-season darling Chevy Chase, who had not yet been banished for crimes against late-night comedy.
The bit is that Michaels is trying to talk Chase out of one of his trademark falls. “Chevy, you’re 58 years old,” he argues. (Chase was actually a month shy of his 46th birthday at the time.) Michaels finally relents when Chase agrees to sign several waivers releasing NBC from liability. The signing is interrupted by the ridiculous appearance of mulleted Joe Piscopo in a tuxedo with the sleeves cut off. The oiled, preening Piscopo flexes as he tries to talk Chase out of the fall, but the cameo simply makes us wonder why it wasn’t Eddie Murphy.

When Cameron Diaz headlines Netflix’s action comedy “Back in Action” alongside Jamie Foxx next year, it will mark her first movie in 11 years. The actor left Hollywood for a decade to focus on her family (she has two children with husband Benji Madden) and launch businesses like her popular wine Avaline. Speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, Diaz stood by her decision to retire from acting for just over a decade.
“For me, it was just something I had to do,” Diaz said. “It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else.”

Foxx was both absent and quiet during a good chunk of 2023. His daughter, Corinne Foxx, posted on social media that Foxx experienced a medical complication that left him hospitalized. This led to rumors running rampant about the cause of Foxx’s medical condition and the true state of his physical health.
Foxx would reemerge in the public eye in 2023 at the Critics Choice Awards, both seemingly in good spirits and in strong physical health. However, it was clear from his onstage speech that the illness he experienced took a physical toll on the actor.

Late actor Chadwick Boseman became a global star when he was chosen to play Black Panther in the MCU. Making his debut in Captain America: Civil War, the actor headlined his own solo film Black Panther in 2018, creating a ripple of change in the way Black superheroes were portrayed in the mainstream.
In a recent public event, co-star Lupita Nyong’o mentioned how the executives at Marvel did not trust the film to do well and were apprehensive. She attributed the doubts to the Hollywood myth ‘Black doesn’t sell’, which the Boseman starrer shattered with a $1.35 billion box office and seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Jada Smith has always been very candid about her personal life. Using her chat show as a medium to tell her story, the actress has been very vocal about her life experiences, regardless of how uncomfortable it may make her. While most fans know her for talking about her marriage with Will Smith, the actress once revealed one very dark part of her early years in Hollywood.

It would seem that an addiction almost cost Smith everything she was trying to build in the industry. In an episode of her chat show, she confessed that she had a very brutal confrontation with her drug addiction on the set of The Nutty Professor.

Saturday Night Live fans are in for a wickedly good episode this evening as actress and singer Ariana Grande returns to Studio 8H for the fourth time in promotion of this November’s Wicked, in which Grande stars a Glinda.
Given Wicked doesn’t hit theaters until Nov. 22, it’s honestly a bit surprising Grande’s hosting stint is coming so early in the season; however, Universal has been heavily promoting the film already so clearly it’s part of a strategy to help the film continue to gain momentum ahead of its release.
Funny enough, the promo for the episode saw Grande telling several SNL cast members she’d prefer to do nothing Wicked or Wizard of Oz related – though we have a pretty good sense we’ll definitely get some sort of skit inspired by the franchise or perhaps a cameo by her Wicked costar Cynthia Erivo.

There likely wasn’t a path to a win for Jean Doumanian when she took the reins from Lorne Michaels at Saturday Night Live in 1980. The show not only lost Michaels but all of the original Not Ready for Primetime Players, several of whom had gone on to be major movie stars. The new cast would inevitably be compared unfavorably to the first, but it didn’t help that Joe Piscopo was the closest thing Doumanian had found to a star. She’d also cast young Eddie Murphy, but inexplicably kept him relegated to the bench for the first part of the show’s sixth season.
“I could never describe to you in words how painful those first 10 months really were,” Piscopo said in oral history Live From New York. “You just knew that this was America’s favorite television show, and yet here we were, taking it right into the toilet.

Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Created by the legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Pictures had a powerful start in 1994. But the animated industry was a tough feat to be conquered, given how Disney was the undisputed king of the genre at the time. While this was the story at least three decades ago, currently DreamWorks is all set to dethrone the entertainment conglomerate as well as Pixar with its next release.

A variety of factors — including a “pissing contest” between CBS CEO Les Moonves and a rival exec — led to the arrested development of CBS Beverly Hills Cop TV series back in 2013, director Barry Sonnenfeld detailed in a recent SlashFilm podcast.
Penned by the prolific Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Terriers) and directed by Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), the Beverly Hills Cop pilot starred Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder) as Aaron Foley, a transplanted Detroit police officer now fighting crime in tony Beverly Hills, all the while trying to escape the shadow of his infamous, tailpipe-banana-ing dad (Eddie Murphy of the Cop...

We’re getting a first look at the late John Amos in NBC’s Suits: L.A. pilot in a just-released episodic photo. Amos, who died at the age of 84, was cast in a guest-starring role in the pilot from Aaron Korsh, which was picked up to series in July. It is the iconic actor’s final role.
In the pilot, Amos played himself as a client at Ted’s (Stephen Amell) law firm who also has a longstanding friendship with Ted. While Amos’ guest appearance was not conceived as part of an ongoing arc, we hear there was a potential for him to recur. He will now be seen in the pilot only, which will air when the series debuts later this season.
NBC has yet to make a decision on whether the episode will be dedicated to Amos.

Exclusive: Oscar winner Halle Berry is in negotiations to join the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Don Winslow’s short story Crime 101, Bart Layton’s anticipated follow-up to American Animals that will star Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Barry Keoghan. The pic will be released in theaters next year.
Plot details are under wraps, but the original short story by Winslow has shades of Heat as it follows high-level jewel thefts taking place up and down the Pacific Coast that police have linked to Colombian cartels. Detective Lou Lubesnick has other ideas and he zeroes in on one perp, a thief looking for a final score. The film will shoot this month.
Layton is directing and wrote the script with contributions from Peter Straughan. Producers include Story Factory’s Shane Salerno, Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, Raw’s Layton and Dimitri Doganis and Derrin Schlesinger.
