The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

If the presidential campaign stirs your appetite for still more political noise, here’s a quick solution: Catch the new biopics of Donald Trump or Ronald Reagan. Trump calls the movie about him “a hit job”; Reagan likely would find his biopic a sleeper..
Is there an audience for political movies? Perhaps it’s no coincidence that two movie stars known as policy activists instead have created caper films for the popcorn crowd, or the streaming subset.
George Clooney glibly glides through Wolfs, co-starring Brad Pitt, while Matt Damon ambles through the chaos of The Instigators, co-starring Casey Affleck. The paydays are formidable, but their Tomatoes will whither on the vine.
But then political movies always have had a troubled history in terms of impact and accuracy: One helped obliterate an entire studio regime, another triggered a bitter creative feud. But none became a major audience hit.

It was Paul Reubens’ second turn at bat.
The actor, then 35, had already rocketed to fame as Pee-wee Herman, the bicycle-obsessed man-child from 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure — the feature debut from Tim Burton, who is back in cinemas this weekend with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
For his sophomore outing, 1988’s Big Top Pee-wee, Reubens relocated his alter ego from suburbia to a pastoral setting, where Pee-wee cared for talking animals while working on cutting-edge agricultural experiments like hot dog trees.
Burton did not return to direct; instead it was Randal Kleiser behind the camera, back at Paramount for the first time since directing the studio’s 1978 smash, Grease.
“I had a ball making that movie,” says Penelope Ann Miller, who played Pee-wee’s fiancé Winnie, on THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. “I loved Winnie, the prude little school teacher, who wouldn’t let him touch her and loved egg salad,...

Dennis Quaid leads the cast of Reagan as the 40th President himself, telling his story from a small-town upbringing to Hollywood stardom to commander-in-chief. Director Sean McNamara aims to capture Reagan’s journey in a positive light, with help from Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy and notable supporting players.
The film follows Reagan through career peaks and personal struggles, with flair shown in his acting days and devotion to Nancy during life’s challenges. Their bond anchors the biopic as dramatic reenactments unfold. We see Reagan rise as SAG leader and later California governor, cementing his conservative views challenged by communism.
Quaid embodies the Gipper with mannerisms conveying charm and wisdom. His passion comes through as the film highlights confronting issues as president, from “Reaganomics” to the Berlin Wall speech. International crises also get coverage, like negotiations with Soviet chief Gorbachev played by Olek Krupa.

Reagan Stars Penelope Ann Miller and Dennis Quaid
Last week, Eye For Film had the chance to sit down with stars of Reagan, a biopic starring Dennis Quaid and Penelope Ann Miller as Ron and Nancy. Based on Paul Kengor's book The Crusader, it has Jon Voight as a narrator for the story. Not conventionally though. Kengor's book is subtitled Ronald Reagan And The Fall Of Communism, and Voight plays an old Kgb hand who explains how the Gipper brought Gorbachev to the table and more.
Due to time differences I wished Jon a good evening from Scotland. "Hello Andrew," he said in a passable Scottish accent. He continued "Great lad, great". It was only fair to say I'd offer him some of my mum's shortbread; even online interviews need snacks, and that got a laugh too.
The film is framed with his character, Viktor Petrovich, as the lens for it.

Presumably because movies like Joker and Cruella proved that audiences just love villain origin stories, this week we’re getting Reagan, a brand new biopic about the 40th President of the United States starring Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller and Jon Voight. Oh, and Creed frontman Scott Stapp as Frank Sinatra, because this movie is clearly some kind of collective fever dream.
But years before Quaid saddled up for the role (literally), we nearly got a movie about Ronald Reagan, also called Reagan, starring Will Ferrell. That may sound kind of odd, but it’s not like he didn’t have years of experience playing terrible presidents.
Back in 2016, it was reported that Ferrell’s production company, Gary Sanchez, had acquired Reagan, a screenplay by Mike Rosolio that appeared on the annual Black List, which collects the year’s best unproduced film scripts. Ferrell was attached to star in the...

There is a great deal more hagiography than history in “Reagan,” a worshipful biopic of the 40th U.S. President that often plays like the cinematic equivalent of CliffsNotes, or one of those compact paperback biographies of notable figures that are designed to be consumed in an hour or less.
Director Sean McNamara (“Soul Surfer”), working from a by-the-numbers screenplay by Howard A. Klausner (based on Paul Kengor’s book “The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism”), is nothing if not brisk in his recounting of highpoints in the life of an iconic figure who, for better or worse, loomed large and exerted influence on the world stage throughout the final quarter of the 20th century and beyond.
Indeed, McNamara’s movie is so streamlined that, if you knew nothing about Reagan’s Hollywood heyday before he entered politics, you might wonder why he has a poster for...

During a year of political tension, it’s not uncommon to see films and television take advantage of the mood. In past years, this has often manifested through documentaries, but recent years have seen a rise in narrative recreations. Reagan takes a 90s approach to the biopic, trying to capture the attitudes and tone of Forrest Gump, Gandhi, and Chaplin.
It’s a celebratory affair that is more willing to negatively frame Americans questioning his actions than be critical of its subject. An effort to recapture the grandeur of biopics of old causes Reagan to feel incredibly thin. Its tone feels very out of touch, but apart from star Dennis Quaid, the ensemble leans into cartoonish portrayals of iconic politicians and world figures.

To celebrate the release of Reagan, which opens in US cinemas this weekend, we had the pleasure of chatting with some of its legendary cast to learn more about the biopic of the 40th President of the United States.
From dusty small-town roots to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage, Reagan is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds. Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former Kgb agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan’s when Reagan first catches the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating. Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey.

Sean McNamara’s biopic Reagan moves well beyond hero worship, as it paints the 40th U.S. president as a saint among men. The film opens with Ronald Reagan (Dennis Quaid) quoting his mother via voiceover—“Everything, even seemingly random twists of fate, is all a part of the divine plan”—just as it cuts to a vision of John Hinckley Jr.’s 1981 attempted assassination of the president. The mix of slow-mo re-enactment and archival footage is the first of many bizarre, unintentionally funny moments in a film that’s determined not only to position Reagan as the great man of the second half of the 20th century, but as a man ordained by God to defeat the colossal, religion- and freedom-hating villain of our times: communism.
In an especially strange decision, the story of Reagan’s life is told from the perspective of a fictionalized Kgb agent, Victor Novikov...

During our conversation, the legendary Hollywood star broke down his approach to playing the real-life figure, sharing some fascinating insights into how he physically transformed into the Russian.
We also hear from Voight on the challenges of bringing Reagan to the big screen, including the difficulties presented by shooting the movie when the Covid-19 pandemic regularly forced productions to shut down.

Hollywood is home to many experts on counter-programming but insiders behind the new film Reagan, which had its world premiere Tuesday at the town’s most iconic theater, insist that it was merely a coincidence that the event bumped up against the Democratic National Convention.
“It wasn’t intended but what the heck, that’s awesome,” offered filmmaker Sean McNamara with a smile, adding that despite missing the night’s program that featured onetime White House residents Barack and Michelle Obama, he would be watching clips once he got home. “I always watch it all day if I’m not working to try and get a sense of what everybody is saying, both Republicans and Democrats.”
McNamara, who pointed out that he’s a registered Democrat, said people are sometimes too quick to link politics to movies when sometimes those ties don’t tell the full story. “Look at the movie Lincoln,...

As well as offering a deep dive into doing the President and First Lady justice on screen, the actors share insights into why it was important to also explore Ronald and Nancy's shared history in Hollywood.
His journey to the Oval Office aside, Reagan is an epic love story that provides a rarely-seen glimpse into Hollywood's Golden Age. It also delivers a surprisingly no-holds-barred account of how the future President's acting career ultimately fizzled out.

The Dennis Quaid-led biopic of Ronald Reagan is one of those movies I feel like I’ve been hearing about forever. While it’s been in the planning stages for years, it first really started to pick up steam in 2019 when director Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer) signed on to helm the film, along with the great Dennis Quaid to play the famed 40th President of the United States.
Shot at the height of the pandemic in 2020, the film has spent a good chunk of time in post-production. I’ve been seeing posters of it at CinemaCon since 2021. Yet, the movie is now set for release, and star Dennis Quaid has been open about how pleased he is with the finished product, calling it his favorite movie of his own since The Right Stuff.

Where in the World Is Diller’s Memoir?
In late July, when Barry Diller’s forthcoming memoir, Who Knew, suddenly disappeared from Amazon — after it had popped up for presales ahead of a planned fall release — it raised all sorts of eyebrows. Had the book’s publisher, Knopf, pulled the project for some reason? Had there been an issue with Amazon (and Target, too, which also was taking preorders)? Was the tome even real in the first place? After all, Knopf hadn’t announced anything about a book deal with Diller, despite an early leak to Page Six. The answer, it turns out, is none of the above. Sources close to the project tell Rambling Reporter that it was Diller himself who delayed publication. After sending early copies to a close circle of friends for comments, the 82-year-old media mogul turned memoirist decided the manuscript needed some last-minute noodling. He...

As the competition series that revived the career and public image of Donald Trump, The Apprentice might be the most impactful -- and infamous -- reality show in TV history.
Seventeen years after it wrapped up its original run, the NBC series still occupies a surprisingly large place in our national consciousness.
In fact, it's the basis for an upcoming book by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and a new movie from director Ali Abbasi.
The book will be available on June 18, and the movie will be in a theater near you on -- well, that's not quite clear.
You see, Abbasi's film -- aptly titled The Apprentice -- has yet to secure a distribution deal in the US.

Well, the first trailer for Dennis Quaid’s Ronald Reagan biopic has debuted. The actor plays the 40th President of the United States in the feature, which promises to span the major events of Reagan’s life, including his confrontation with childhood bullies, his acting career and time leading the Screen Actors Guild and his ascendant rise in politics bolstered by anti-communist rhetoric. Set to a cover of Tears for Fears’ ’80s hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the trailer tracks how Reagan wanted to rule the free world — and did.

This will open in theaters at the end of August this summer. Actor Dennis Quaid stars as Ron, who worked as an actor before getting into politics. "I've always been told bits and pieces of the stories of Ronald Reagan's life, but this movie puts the whole story together. I've played quite a few real people over the years, and I like to play them from their point of view, without judgment. It was a big challenge for me to get behind the public persona of the man and also to move beyond my own feelings of admiration for him." Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the film was shot in Oklahoma...

Julianne Moore plays Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who was 36 years old when she was caught having sex with Joe, a 13-year-old boy who worked with her at a pet store. After having his first child from behind bars, Gracie began her life with Joe (Charles Melton), who is now the same age Gracie was when they first met. Gracie and Joe have three children together, the youngest of them about to graduate high school, and are settling into quiet suburban life when Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives at their waterfront home to study her subject and rock the boat.
If the story feels ripped from the headlines, that’s because the film is loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau tabloid scandal of the late-1990s.

Brian De Palma’s got a long list of films that have been called masterpieces. And, of all the movies he’s made over the past 60 years, he mentions one as being his favorite: Carlito’s Way. The film, with its ensemble cast that included Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, John Leguizamo, and Adrian Pasdar, was released 30 years ago. When we’ve spoken to Pasdar over the years, he’s talked about his fond memories of working with De Palma and that incredible cast.(Click on the media bar below to hear Adrian Pasdar) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Looking-Way-Back_-Revisiting-Brian-De-Palmas-Carlitos-Way.mp3

Brian De Palma’s “play nice” films—in which he shows that he can groove to the strictures of pop cinema while reinvigorating formulaic stories with his formal gifts—often have an acrid aftertaste. While watching The Untouchables or Mission: Impossible, the De Palma acolyte may sense the artist’s resentment at having to impersonally flex his mastery. Carlito’s Way, though, is an exception.
Working from a vivid screenplay by David Koepp, adapted from two novels by Judge Edwin Torres, De Palma embraces the romantic possibilities of mainstream cinema, using his skill to deepen the audience’s engagement with melodrama rather than to interrogate it. The 1993 film is an increasingly endangered bird—an intelligent and beautiful entertainment for adults—that was taken for granted by many at the time.
