Christina Applegate made her first public appearance since announcing that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in August of 2021.

On Monday, the “Dead To Me” actress was honoured with the unveiling of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame “for her strength and versatility in theatre, film and television,” in which she has “proven herself to be one of Hollywood’s most influential leading ladies,” as the Walk of Fame Producer, Ana Martinez, stated ahead of the event.

Prior to the celebration, Applegate, 50, also told The New York Times that it would be the “first time anyone’s going to see me the way I am,” while opening up about how life has changed since her diagnosis.

“I put on 40 pounds; I can’t walk without a cane,” she continued.

Christina Applegate began acting as a small child, but when “Married … With Children” premiered on Fox on April 5, 1987 as the nascent network’s first primetime show, she officially began her 35-years-and-counting career. After playing the iconic dummy Kelly Bundy for 11 seasons, she went on to other starring roles on television, in film and was nominated for a Tony for the 2005 Broadway revival of “Sweet Charity.”

For this work — and much more — Applegate, 50, will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Nov. 14. It’s the fulfillment of “a lifelong dream,” Applegate said, one born out of standing on the Walk of Fame while waiting in line as a kid to see movies on Hollywood Boulevard. “I remember going, ‘I want to have one of these!’” she recalled. “My whole childhood was like that — wow, these stars.”

The romantic comedy “Bros” has been making headlines since the moment the project was announced in 2019. Billed as the first major studio LGBTQ rom-com, the Universal film starring Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane has garnered quite a bit of attention for various reasons. Could all of this press affect its chances during the 2023 awards season? Here are five reasons why I believe “Bros” will dominate the 80th Golden Globes.

1. The film is making headlines left and right.

As the old adage says, “all publicity is good publicity.” Though the film has been relatively positively received by critics (with a Metacritic score of 77 and an 88 Tomatometer score) and audiences (boasting a 90 Rotten Tomatoes audience score), the box office reception left a bit to be desired. On a reported budget of 22 million, the film has currently only grossed 10.8 million, which led writer and star Eichner to make a lengthy post on Twitter...

The Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy opened to 4.8 million at the box office after premiering at TIFF and receiving strong reviews. However, lead star and co-writer Eichner is bemoaning the lack of audiences showing up in theaters as “homophobic,” especially in “certain parts of the country.”

“Smile,” the horror film from Paramount and writer-director Parker Finn, made 2 million at the box office Thursday in its preview screenings from roughly 3,000 screens and that began at 7 p.m. It opens on 3,648 screens this weekend.

“Smile” opens alongside Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ+ and R-rated romantic comedy from writer and star Billy Eichner. “Bros” brought in 500,000 at the box office in its own preview screenings from 2,700 theaters that began at 5 p.m. It opens on 3,350 screens this weekend.

Neither “Smile” or “Bros” is expected to break the 20 million mark this weekend, a disappointing trend for movies this month at the box office, though both have modest budgets and hope to turn a profit on the backs of strong reviews for each and some creative viral marketing, whether it’s eerily grinning fans at a baseball game or Eichner running down New York City streets with Paul Rudd and a pack of lesbians.

Nick Stoller and Billy Eichner’s “Bros” has plenty going for it beyond its allegedly boundary-breaking elements — Eichner, who co-wrote the film and stars in it, called it “the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio” earlier this year, which is kind of true, but also not at all essential for enjoying the film on its own merits — and should (hopefully) prove to be box office catnip for audiences starved for funny, sexy, sweet romantic comedies.

Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.

That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

“Billy on the Street” is back — and with Paul Rudd.

After three years of waiting, a new episode of the hilarious rapid-fire series dropped online Tuesday, which Eichner announced in a tweet on Monday.

“Surprise! The first Billy On The Street In 3 Years drops Tomorrow!!!!!!” Eichner wrote on Twitter alongside a photo of Eichner and the “Ant-Man” actor sporting merchandise for the upcoming LGBTQ rom-com “Bros,” which Eichner stars in and co-wrote.

Indeed, the nearly three-minute episode features Rudd and Eichner running around New York City demanding straight people see “Bros,” which premieres in theaters Sept. 30.

“I’m out here back on the street with famous and beloved straight man Paul Rudd,” Eichner says in the episode’s intro. “We’re going to spread the word about my new movie ‘Bros.’ … Let’s bro!”

The Zurich Film Festival has selected some of the year’s most anticipated auteur films and high-brow Hollywood movies in its Gala Premieres section. Universal’s Bros, the gay romantic comedy starring, co-written and executive produced by Billy Eichner, is heading to the Toronto Film Festival for its world premiere ahead of its Sept. 30 release.

Bros. is billed as a smart, swoony and heartfelt story about gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, Guy Branum, Monica Raymund, Jim Rash, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Dot-Marie Jones, Jai Rodriguez and more will also star.

Nicholas Stoller directs and co-wrote. The film is produced by Judd Apatow, Stoller and Josh Church and is executive produced by Eichner and Karl Frankenfield.

This is the fourth world premiere to be announced for Toronto after Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out story, Clement Virgo’s Brother and the Paramount Players/Paramount+ movie On the Come Up from Emmy nominee Sanaa Lathan.

The Toronto Film Festival is set to give Nicholas Stoller’s romantic comedy Bros, starring Billy Eichner, a world premiere in September.

Universal Pictures’ Bros is billed as the first major studio film with an all-openly LGBTQ principal cast and will have a high-profile red carpet launch at TIFF. Eichner and Stoller co-wrote Bros, which is produced by Judd Apatow.

The ensemble cast includes Luke Macfarlane, Amanda Bearse, Guy Branum, Guillermo Díaz, Dot-Marie Jones, Miss Lawrence, Eve Lindley, Ts Madison, Jim Rash and Monica Raymund. All of the principal heterosexual roles will be played by openly LGBTQ performers.

Bros is also produced by Stoller and Josh Church and is executive produced by Eichner and Karl Frankenfield.

Universal is set to release Bros on Sept. 30, and the film has already had trailer drops and talent appearances at CinemaCon. Toronto returns for a 47th edition from Sept.
