Eugene and Dan Levy hosted the 76th Emmy Awards — or as Dan called it, “Broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services.” It was the year’s second Emmys show, since the 2023 ceremony got delayed by the strike until this past January. The father-son duo kept it light and affable and Canadian all night, reprising their Schitt’s Creek chemistry. The January ceremony went for low-key nostalgic charm; this was a rerun that turned into your basic blah-bath. Pretty standard for the Emmys, always the least glam,...

“God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” (Fathom) and “Am I Racist?” (Sdg) won’t register with most mainstream moviegoers, but this weekend they could rank as high as #3 and #4 (in either order), behind “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) and the debuting “Speak No Evil” (Universal). Also in the mix are Lionsgate’s new “The Killer’s Game” and the 8th weekend of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Of these, guess which two are top candidates for receiving the rare A+ Cinemascore.
There’s a history of lucrative performances for similar films that appeal to conservative faith-based or Maga-related audiences (which frequently overlap). The progressive side has its analogs, particularly in Michael Moore documentaries, but for the last decade or more nearly all the preach-to-the-choir breakthroughs come from the right wing of the ideological spectrum.

Baywatch star Nicole Eggert has shared a video in which she shaves her head, as she continues to be treated for a “very rare form” of breast cancer.
The actress, who played Summer Quinn on Baywatch from 1992 to 1994, posted the video to Instagram earlier this week. As she took the blades to her hair, the Beastie Boys’ song Fight For Your Right provided the soundtrack. She started the process herself, and was helped by her daughter to finish off.
Eggert shared in January that she had been diagnosed with stage 2 cribriform carcinoma after suffering with pain in her left breast.
She accompanied the shaving video with the words:
“Maybe healing involves not so much changing ourselves but allowing ourselves to be who we are – Madeleine Eames.”
Celebrities including Alyssa Milano and Jennie Garth expressed their support in the comments section of Eggert’s post.

In stand-up comedy, silence typically equals death. You tell a joke and the audience laughs? Great. You tell a joke and they groan? Well, at least they were interested enough to respond. Tell a joke and … nothing? You may have lost the room altogether.
For Ramy Youssef, though, a joke greeted with silence allowed him to find his comedic voice, which has expanded beyond his stand-up to include creating and/or starring in a pair of acclaimed comedy series — Ramy on Hulu, Mo on Netflix — a juicy supporting role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things,...

Baywatch star Nicole Eggert announced that she has been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.
Eggert said something didn’t feel right recently when she observed rapid weight gain and pain in her left breast. The actress thought she was going through menopause. After having mammograms and biopsies in November, a pathology report confirmed that she had stage 2 cribriform carcinoma.
Eggert said she’ll have to go under the knife and is awaiting news as to when chemo and radiation will start.
She stated that she has anxieties about the cancer metastasizing. “I have panics where I’m like, just get this out of me,” she said. “You sit there and it’s in you and you’re like, every second that passes and it’s inside of me. It’s growing, and you’re just like, you just want it out.”
Her daughter, Keegan, 12, is giving her inspiration to get through the fight.

Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” movies, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, were just 10 days away from wrapping principal photography when most of the production was shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero in the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, was able to continue some shooting because he’s on an equity contract.
Even so, being notified that filming would be delayed was devastating, Bailey says.
“It was savage,” the Brit actor told Variety at the GQ Men of the Year party in Los Angeles. “It’s the way that Cynthia and Ari and Jon Chu are bringing that story to life. It’s so sort of psychologically rich that I think the idea that Cynthia has got to be held on ice before she manages to finish that huge [‘Defying Gravity]. It’s not just the emotional story, but the actual technique.

Elvis Presley‘s music and style were heavily featured throughout the television series Happy Days. The series, which focused on the decades of the 1950s and 60s, was a throwback to simpler times. The music reflected the eras and included some of Presley’s greatest hits. However, as the series’ cast ended its 11-season run, one Presley song took on a different meaning as it closed the book on the lives of the Cunningham Family and their friends.

Donald Trump is releasing a new book next month that’s comprised solely of letters the twice-impeached former president has received from celebrities over the years. And, if it sells well, Jimmy Fallon has an idea for the sequel: a compilation of all the times Trump was ordered to appear in court.
Fallon’s guess came during Thursday night’s monologue on “The Tonight Show,” as he marveled at the concept of the book in general, pointing out how weird it is to publish letters from so many people that have disavowed him at this point.
“It’s kind of strange. Trump’s bragging like, ‘Look at all the friends I used to have. It’s all in the book,'” Fallon mocked. “Yep, the first five letters are from celebrities, the rest are just fan mail from Scott Baio.”

Woody Harrelson hosted “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, marking his fifth time as host.
Not only did Harrelson join the show’s Five-Timers Club, he also stirred up some controversy with a joke toward the end of his opening monologue.
He recalled reading the “craziest script” recently, and broke down the plot.

“So the movie goes like this: The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes,” Harrelson quipped. “And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.”
Then he delivered the punchline. “I threw the script away,” Harrelson joked. “I mean, who was going to believe that crazy idea? Being forced to do drugs?...
Not only did Harrelson join the show’s Five-Timers Club, he also stirred up some controversy with a joke toward the end of his opening monologue.
He recalled reading the “craziest script” recently, and broke down the plot.

TV today has large families like the Duggars of 19 Kids and Counting and the Gosselins of Jon and Kate Plus 8. But before reality shows, there were the Bradfords of Eight Is Enough. The comedy-drama series aired from 1977 to 1981. It was based on the life of syndicated newspaper columnist Tom Braden, who had eight children. He wrote a book, and ABC turned it into a successful TV series of the same name. So, which Eight Is Enough cast members are still alive?

Eight Is Enough centered on parents Tom and Joan Bradford and their eight children: David, Mary, Joanie, Susan, Nancy, Elizabeth, Tommy, and Nicholas. Dad was a newspaper columnist, and mom was a homemaker.
Sadly, Diana Hyland, who played Joan, was diagnosed with breast cancer during season 1 and died.

During a 1980 appearance on Circus of the Stars, The Waltons actor Mary McDonough traded her conservative 1930s-style dresses for a leotard as she performed an aerial act with Happy Days star Scott Baio. But the high-flying stunt wasn’t an entirely pleasant experience for McDonough, she revealed in her 2011 memoir.

Circus of the Stars was a CBS variety show featuring celebrities performing circus acts. It debuted in 1977 and aired annually until 1994. McDonough – known for playing Erin Walton on The Waltons – was recruited to appear on the fifth edition of the show. She and Baio performed an aerial act called “Pirates in the Sky.”
For McDonough, who had a background in dance, the chance to do circus stunts on TV was a dream come true.

There aren’t that many key takeaways from Ryan White’s Netflix documentary Pamela, a love story, but perhaps the most important is this: Pamela Anderson knows what she’s doing.
Discussing her decision to pose naked for a series of PETA ads, Anderson observes frankly, “You have to be brave and you’ve gotta use what you’ve got.”
January is ending with a pair of Anderson-centric projects — Pamela, a love story and the unrelated (but totally related) memoir Love, Pamela — released with the common narrative that pop culture in general and the media in specific treated Pamela Anderson salaciously, getting hung up on her body and her dating life and, eventually, on her stolen sex tape, in the process negating her genuine voice. But in order to attract attention to the projects devoted to recovering that voice and reclaiming her narrative, Anderson isn’t opposed to seeding the...

It’s hard out there for former child actors. Often, a lot have ended up tabloid fodder or have tragically died at a young age. Others have found a career on the reality show circuit -remember Vh-!’s “The Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Fit Club”? And the recent edition of The Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America, Celebrity Edition” featured former child stars from the 1980s.
But transitioning to adult roles has been getting easier as witnessed in the 2022 Emmy nominations. Numerous nominees began their careers as child or teen actors including Jason Bateman (“Ozark”); Nicholas Braun (“Succession”); Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”); Elle Fanning (“The Great”); Melanie Lynskey (“Yellow Jackets”); Will Poulter (“Dopesick”); Seth Rogen (“Pam & Tommy”); Juno Temple (“Ted Lasso”); Christopher Walken (“Severance”); Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”); Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”); and Zendaya (“Euphoria”).
A lot of these actors started taking control of their careers at a young age.

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.
“I find it interesting that Hollywood pulls that lever for the Democratic Party, that raises taxes,...

Pop singer Olivia Rodrigo – the actual teenager behind this year’s biggest teen pop hits, like “Driver’s License” and “good 4 u” – paid a visit to the White House on Wednesday for a “get out the vax” campaign to encourage young people to get vaccinated against Covid-19. The thinking behind the appearance was that if young people won’t listen to Dr. Anthony Fauci, an elder who has never written a bop that slaps, maybe they’ll listen to one of their own who has many bops. She appeared at a press briefing – “Which should have a big impact on the millions of teens who watch the White House press briefings,” Seth Meyers joked on Thursday’s “Late Night.”
“That’s right, pop star Olivia Rodrigo made a surprise appearance at the afternoon press briefings,” Meyers said. “It was almost as surprising as when Sarah Sanders would appear at one,...

Seemingly every young actor in Hollywood wanted to be in The Outsiders. The auditions lasted for weeks as the decision-makers gauged the chemistry between different groups of guys, which at any given time over the course of the process reportedly included Sean Penn, Scott Baio, Nicolas Cage, Mickey Rourke, Val Kilmer and Dennis Quaid. None of whom made it. But it was all worth it for a shot to be a part of, let alone star in, the eagerly anticipated big-screen adaptation of S.E Hinton's 1967 coming-of-age bestseller—a project spearheaded by a group of California sixth graders and...

It really did all come down to that Fleetwood Mac TikTok video, didn’t it? There it was, right in the middle of an inauguration week that was emotionally messy and culturally turbulent on such historic levels: a montage of American idiots, from sea to shining sea, doing their thing to the bass line of “Dreams.” Idaho skater Nathan Apodaca was there, riding his board, sipping his cranberry juice, doing his viral TikTok-star turn, while Stevie Nicks sings about walking through the wreckage of her broken heart and moving on.

When the Wisconsin Democratic Party announced a cast reunion of Happy Days for this Sunday, all to raise money for the final sprint until election day, one member was noticeably absent: Scott Baio.
The Donald Trump supporter wrote on Twitter that the show was being used as a “political pawn.”
The result, though, was more attention for event, which in fundraising circles is just what is wanted in the final weeks of a presidential campaign, a time when donors are inundated with online appeals.
The last few weeks have seen a flood of reunion events, of casts of old TV shows and cult hit movies, giving a retro, Back to the Future feel to the political money race.

Chachi is not having such a happy day.
Scott Baio, a vocal Trump supporter, expressed his disappointment over former “Happy Days” co-stars staging a reunion to raise money for the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
“What a shame to use a classic show like Happy Days about Americana to promote an anti-American socialist,” Baio tweeted.
Hollywood megaproducer Ron Howard, who co-starred as Richie Cunningham alongside Baio on the classic 80’s sitcom , announced the event via Twitter on Monday.
“The most important election of our lifetimes is right around the corner and Wisconsin is a must-win state. So I’m thrilled to announce a #HappyDaysReunion to support @WisDems on Oct 25,” Howard tweeted.
Howard will be joined by “Happy Days” c0-stars Henry Winkler (Fonzie), Marion Ross (Marion) and Anson Williams (Potsie).
Shortly after the announcement, “Full House” star John Stamos jumped in on the action, asking if he could play Chachi to which Scott Baio fired back.

Alan Parker and Madonna on the set of "Evita"
We were remiss Friday in sharing the news that we've lost another fine talent. The director Alan Parker who brought us gangster comedies, oddball indies, multiple musicals, and prestige literary adaptations has died at 76 years of age of an undisclosed lengthy illness. His 14 films netted a combined 27 Oscar nominations and 6 wins, and he himself received two Best Director nominations (1978's Midnight Express and 1988's Mississippi Burning).
Parker burst onto the scene as a scrappy young British director with 1976's playful gangster musical spoof Bugsy Malone and its all kid cast (Scott Baio and Jodie Foster headlined)...

Innovative and acclaimed British director Alan Parker, died Friday, July 31, after a lengthy, but as yet undisclosed illness, according to Variety. He was 76.
Parker was nominated for two Best Director Oscars. One of those films was 1988’s Mississippi Burning, which highly dramatized the investigation of three murdered civil rights activists in 1964. The films starred Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, with the latter being nominated for Best Actor. Parker’s first Oscar nomination though came for the 1978 drama Midnight Express, another film based on true events. Oliver Stone won his first Oscar for the screenplay, which focused on Billy Hayes, who escaped a Turkish prison after being convicted of trying to smuggle hashish out of the country. Giorgio Moroder also won his first Oscar for composing the music. It was Parker’s second feature, and it was vastly different from his debut.

Alan Parker, an English movie director with an exceptionally wide-ranging oeuvre ranging from “Bugsy Malone” to “Evita,” from “Midnight Express” to “The Road to Wellville,” has died. He was 76.
The British Film Institute confirmed Parker’s death on Friday, noting he died after a long illness.
Parker was twice Oscar-nominated for best director, for 1978’s “Midnight Express” and for 1988’s Mississippi Burning.” While the director’s subject matter was eclectic, he did return frequently to the musical form: His films “Bugsy Malone,” “Fame,” “Pink Floyd the Wall,” “The Commitments” and “Evita” were all musicals or had strong musical elements in one form or another.
Parker’s first feature film, 1976’s “Bugsy Malone,” made a considerable splash for an audacious concept that worked only because everyone kept a straight face. The film was a Depression-era gangster musical cast entirely with children, the oldest perhaps 15. These included Jodie Foster and Scott Baio.

Update: Macbeth has gotten the greenlight from SAG-AFTRA to resume production. The union says it rescinded the Do Not Work order it issued today after the producers had “come forward with a safety plan that is in compliance.”
The guild has also taken Retaliator off its Do Not Work list. “Retaliator is presently not shooting so the Do Not Work is inactive,” a spokesperson said.
Earlier: SAG-AFTRA has told its members that they can’t work on two more films because their producers have “failed to comply with SAG-AFTRA’s required Covid-19 safety standards and protocols for a safe set.” One of the films is Macbeth, an adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy by Toil and Trouble Productions LLC; the other is Retaliator, from a company called Retaliators LLC.
“As such,” the union said in identical “Do Not Work” notices, “SAG-AFTRA members are hereby instructed to withhold any acting services or...

A California appeals court affirmed on Friday that a 2017 law requiring subscription-based internet sites like IMDb to take down the ages of a screen actor, should the actor request it, violates the First Amendment.
The law, which was supported by SAG-AFTRA and signed by former Gov. Jerry Brown in 2016, was created with the intention of preventing age discrimination in Hollywood; before it was signed into law, the bill pointed to a Guardian article that was based on an interview that TheWrap had conducted with Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2015, in which the actress said she was rejected for a role because of her age.
But in late 2016, IMDb sued then-Attorney General Kamala Harris over the law, which was scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2017, arguing that it was unconstitutional. SAG-AFTRA joined the lawsuit soon after, albeit to defend the legislation against IMDb. By early 2018, a federal judge struck down the law...
