Heist and hacking movies!

by lars-71265 | created - 26 Jul 2017 | updated - 1 month ago | Public

A growing list (2017 - ...) of heist and hacking movies and TV shows that I've watched. I might throw in a few pool hustling and grifter themed movies too, as well as documentaries.

I've been into these genres since forever, and I'm always in search of new movies. I hope somebody will find this list useful!

I put new additions at the bottom of the list.

1. Sneakers (1992)

PG-13 | 126 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

65 Metascore

Director: Phil Alden Robinson | Stars: Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Sidney Poitier, Jo Marr

Votes: 62,556 | Gross: $51.43M

Hacking and heists! Does it get any better than this? Very entertaining story (written by Parkes and Lasker who also wrote Wargames) well told, great acting by an amazing cast, nice visuals and sound - and sound itself plays a role since one character (Straitharn) is blind. A must see! "We're the US government. We don't do that sort of thing."

2. WarGames (1983)

PG | 114 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

77 Metascore

Director: John Badham | Stars: Matthew Broderick, Ally Sheedy, John Wood, Dabney Coleman

Votes: 110,802 | Gross: $79.57M

A hacker movie from when hacking was new. About an under-achiever at school who is into computers (IMSAI!) and videogames. It's about being in control of the system, about getting access, and about losing control and trusting too much in software AI. Excellent visual storytelling! I can only hope it has aged well for those who didn't see it back then. Give it a go! "Protovision, I have you now!".

3. Takedown (2000)

R | 96 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

This film is based on the story of the capture of computer hacker Kevin Mitnick.

Director: Joe Chappelle | Stars: Skeet Ulrich, Russell Wong, Angela Featherstone, Donal Logue

Votes: 7,171

The best hacking movie I've seen so far (I'm writing this in 2016)! Based on the true story of Kevin Mitnick, excellently played by Skeet Ulrich. Rarely you get to see true operating systems in action in movies, but here you do. And social hacking by the way. I also like how it's shot and the music. Everything. Nothing to complain about really! "I was the server".

Votes: 40,310 | Gross: $0.47M

Weird and unusual! In the eyes of a by-stander (Van Damme) we get to see how a bank heist and hostage situation unfolds. Worth to see only for the ten minute monologue by Van Damme!

British hacking and heist movie! I liked this one. It's about a man and his young son; it has some depth too it. Not much hacking really though; the old figure-out-the-password routine. The movie drags a bit in the middle but really picks up towards the end. Nice to see excellent Bernard Hill (king Theoden in Lord of the rings: The two towers) in an earlier role.

Will I watch it again? Yes!

10. Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

R | 125 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

86 Metascore

Three amateur bank robbers plan to hold up a bank. A nice simple robbery: Walk in, take the money, and run. Unfortunately, the supposedly uncomplicated heist suddenly becomes a bizarre nightmare as everything that could go wrong does.

Director: Sidney Lumet | Stars: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Penelope Allen, Sully Boyar

Votes: 273,145 | Gross: $50.00M

Bank robbery turns hostage situation. I like Cazale (he's great in Deer hunter). I like Pacino. So what can go wrong? Well, I was hoping for a more interesting story and some tention. Basically the entire movie takes place inside the bank. Nothing wrong with that and the actors are great, but it didn't really do it for me.

Will I watch it again? No.

11. The Good Thief (2002)

R | 109 min | Action, Crime, Drama

68 Metascore

An aging gambler on a losing streak attempts to rob a casino in Monte Carlo. But someone's already tipped off the cops before he even makes a move.

Director: Neil Jordan | Stars: Nick Nolte, Ralph Fiennes, Nutsa Kukhianidze, Ouassini Embarek

Votes: 10,905 | Gross: $3.52M

A heroin addict (Nick Nolte) setting up one last heist in Monte Carlo. I read that the role was written with Nolte in mind by the way. A bit of a cat and mouse game between him and the cop. I wish the movie was darker. Instead it's a bit silly and unrealistic. Worth to check out though; the plot concerns a lot of planning, building up to the heist at the end.

Will I watch it again? No.

An OK heist movie from the UK. One of those robberies where they have it planned very well, and it's executed accordingly, and then one little mistake ... well, I'm not going to spoil it for you. I'm from Sweden so the strong British accents and slang made this movie hard to follow since I had to watched it without subtitles.

13. Ocean's Eleven (2001)

PG-13 | 116 min | Crime, Thriller

Director: Nimród Antal | Stars: Columbus Short, Matt Dillon, Laurence Fishburne, Jean Reno

Votes: 31,856 | Gross: $15.99M

Normally a heist in a movie involves an unforeseen obstacle. Things does not go exactly as planned. In this movie everything goes wrong from the start. It's played straight and is very well done. Realistic in the details but not on the whole. Nice cast. Good to see Skeet Ulrich (Takedown) in a role again, but he does not get much to do or say.

25. Hell or High Water (II) (2016)

Toby is a divorced father who's trying to make a better life. His brother is an ex-con with a short temper and a loose trigger finger. Together, they plan a series of heists against the bank that's about to foreclose on their family ranch.

Director: David Mackenzie | Stars: Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham

Votes: 252,639 | Gross: $27.01M

A few quick and simple bank robberies. Nothing special about that. It has some action moments. No tension really. A good drama though. It depicts small towns with closed down business, with people struggling to survive on low income, and banks as potentially bad guys. Good performances, well done and all that. I've always liked Jeff Bridges, and he's good in this movie too, but as a whole it's not that a fantastic a movie that I was hoping for.

Director: Sarik Andreasyan | Stars: Hayden Christensen, Earl Minor, Adrien Brody, Jordana Brewster

Votes: 17,557

Older brother get out of prison. Younger brother has a car repair business going and is not doing illegal stuff anymore. Low on cash though. You know what's coming. Still, I liked this movie. Well shot. And Hayden Christensen can act! Who knew? (Too bad for him his in a movie with Adrien Brody who steals much of the show.)

A must-see! A diamond heist leads to, well ... a violent mess of different people with different agendas. Fully entertaining, over the top and comical. Great characters. Second time watching it it actually felt a bit slow though, believe it or not.

30. The Last Heist (2016)

A bank Robbery goes terribly wrong when one of the hostages turns out to be a wanted serial killer

Director: Mike Mendez | Stars: Henry Rollins, Torrance Coombs, Victoria Pratt, Michael Aaron Milligan

Votes: 2,701

Could've been better! I did enjoyed most of this movie though.

A psychopathic serial killer happens to be in the bank when heavily armed robbers hit it. It's a nice premise. I had my hopes up, but the quality is uneven on many levels. Some of the score is great, but some of it sound simple. In one scene the music is too loud while the actors are talking. The editing is off.

And the sniper and all the cops they just disappear at the end, because ... well, plot.

The actors are great though.

Not really a heist movie as it turns out; a simple diamond robbery gets the plot going, but after that it's just people chasing money and diamonds. Bruce Willis in a supporting role sadly has to little screen time. Nicely shot, decent acting, never boring, but in the end not that exciting.

Absolutely wonderful Swedish comedy heist movie! Plotwise there's a number of different heists, because they keep losing what they steal. So, the movie mainly consists of execution of their plans which makes this a wonderful heist movie.

This is the first of a number of movies with (mostly) the same characters (the Jönsson gang), played by the same actors. The good ones from the series are from the 1980s. They are all similar; really good heist movies.

I saw this one as a kid, and it's one of the movies that got me into heist movies. It's comedy and crime combined wonderfully, and with an excellent electronic score. And as all Jönsson gang movies it shows off Sweden at it's best: in the summer.

Please note though, these movies are perhaps not for everyone, with their quirky humour.

Another gem from the 1980s! This is the second in the Jönssonligan movie series of independent stories taking place in Stockholm, Sweden. As with all of them it's a perfect match of comedy and crime and an excellent electronic score. A bit more sad, if at all possible, than other Jönssonligan movies, adding some depth. Music is used in a fun, creative way, which makes the movie unique. So, all in all, clearly worth a watch! Nothing clever it comes to the planning or the robberies though.

Brilliant Swedish TV mini-series by Leif Krantz. I remember watching it as a kid when it aired in the 1980's, and I've seen it a couple of times since then. It starts with a gold heist. Then the question is what you do with it. And where do you go, and how do you avoid the cops? How do you deal with other crooks and the risk of betrayal?

I like the tone. It's partly sad, partly comedic.

A bank robbery hostage situation. John Leguizamo is just great as the leader of the gang. Other than that it's not that good. Donnie Wahlberg, playing the cop in charge, overacts (in the first episodes anyway). The concept for the show could've been developed in a different direction, perhaps giving it a deeper psychological or even political touch (the robberers are war veterans) which is just hinted at as it is now. Despite these complaints I did enjoy it for what it was; a short TV series with a solid no-cliffhanger ending.

One of the most spectacular heists of all time, according to Time Magazine, was the robbery of a cash depot in southern Stockholm, Sweden, 2009. The burglars landed a helicopter on the rooftop, broke in using explosives, and got away safe and sound with a large sum in cash.

This is a three hour documentary mini-series about the robbery. It features interviews with victims and other people involved in the investigation.

Best of all, a guy previously convicted of burglary (but not this one), Anders Adali, is interviewed. (Side note: I've later on read his two documentary books, "Sista rånet" [Last robbery] and "Svenska rån" [Swedish robberies], the first giving out all details regarding planning and execution of a cash transport heist taking place in Finland, and the latter interviewing robbers and law enforcement about the waves of different heists in Sweden during 1990's up until this helicopter heist in 2009. Both are really good, and I especially liked "Sista rånet", which could easily become a good heist movie.)

Sadly none of the involved criminals are interviewed.

Really nice score and beautiful photography!

All in all a well made documentary!

The classic con artist movie. What more can I say? You have to see it! It's very good!

Now, the re-watchability is of course not great from one perspective, the plot, but still, it has a special charm, and good performances.

(One issue I have is the amounts they're gambling with. It's just ridiculous. It's taking place in 1936. The US is in a deep depression. $400,000? That's $7,250,000 today. Holy crap. It would be plausible, in my opinion, with $400,000, perhaps in the 1970's when the movie was made, or later, but in 1936? I don't think so.)

A good heist movie! For one, it has a lot of heist in it.

I like the premise (minor spoiler alert!) that they're just planning heists without actually doing them. Perhaps more could've been done with that idea though.

The style their going for feels partly borrowed from Ocean's Eleven (released two years prior), especially with that funky baseline.

Have you seen a few movies of this type, you probably know what's coming though; unpredictability is hard to achieve when it comes to heist movies.

This is a B-movie. What a mess!

Horse Creek Entertainment (who else?) picked this up and distributed it with English voices only. Now, judging from what I saw, a good part of the dialogue actually was in English originally, but the syncing is so off that it feels like dubbing. It could be just bad ADR, but then, the voices doesn't match the actors, nor does the sound match the environment. It's just weird. But is it so bad it's good? Nope, unfortunately not.

So, they've already done the gold robbery. We don't get to see that. So it's not passable as a heist movie either. What we get is them driving and fighting each other in the desert for 90 minutes. It's not all that bad of an idea.

I see what the creators were going for, but they could have done it better. And I did like the music, giving you a feel of the middle east.

Poor William Baldwin. When you see his name, you know it will be bad.

This motion picture has the worst title sequence in movie history. And they decided to combine it with one of the most beautiful pieces of music: Mozart's Requiem. By the way, when you use such powerful music at the very beginning you really set the tone for the audience, but then ... meh. Nothing.

This motion pictures has the worst intercut sequences I've ever seen: A guy (who was he anyway?) being stabbed and finally run over by a car -- awkwardly intercut with a couple dancing flamenco in a fancy restaurant! Jeez!

This motion picture has one of the worst endings I've seen. Really. Not one, but two criminals explaining their motivation. Holy crap! A group of very efficient robbers strikes banks in downtown area of Stockholm. Detective Klara and commanding officer Krona takes on the case.

Director: Peter Lindmark | Stars: Sofia Helin, Mikael Persbrandt, Stefan Sauk, Stina Ekblad

The Swedish title "Rånarna" translates to "The robbers". It's played out in the perspective of the police though, investigating a series of armed robberies throughout Stockholm.

I can think of three good things about this movie: The mood (along with music) in several shots, really nice photography and actor Stefan Sauk. But there are also spoiled opportunities with completely incorrect music, awkward gunfights, weird editing choices, bad acting, bad casting and a protagonist who's choices aren't always fully believable.

As it seems, the creator had this idea about a group of criminals being experts at getting away without a trace, whether it's in the city or in the woods. It's just hinted at though. I like the idea, but sadly it's not exposed properly in the movie.

This Australian heist movie was really good! The characters are really well thought out and played. Everyone's actions are motivated. Good storytelling. So, nothing to complain about!

It's in the perspective of the robbers.

Heistwise? Grab the cash and get out fast. No hacking or advanced planning here.

An ok heist and smuggling movie! Actually not much of a heist movie at all, but I enjoyed it anyway. It has a different story.

Not a heist movie per se. It's the story of the inept police detective without a driver's license and his new unlikely friend who loves to drive fast. They're trying to catch this gang executing violent bank robberies. Fun, fast paced, stylized, over the top French movie, well written and with excellent car action shots. I liked it.

And here's a low paced one. Heist-ish.

French. 1970. In the winter. No shortage of trenchcoats!

Quite realistic. It kept my interest, but in the end it's not mind blowing in any way. There's a jewellery robbery which is fun -- it's done in total silence.

88. The St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959)

Not Rated | 89 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

A gang's plans for a St. Louis bank robbery are complicated when the sister of one of the thieves starts voicing her well-founded suspicions.

Directors: Charles Guggenheim, John Stix | Stars: Steve McQueen, Crahan Denton, David Clarke, James Dukas

Heist movie in black and white from the 1950s. Three dudes plan a simple armed daylight robbery. Fowler (Steve McQueen), with no criminal background and with dreams of going back to studying, joins them as a driver.

A bit moral preaching perhaps. A woman desperately tries to stop Fowler from participating in the robbery. Eventually nobody has gained anything from the crime. People are dead, hurt, arrested or on the run .

It's a psychological study and a bit theatrical, as I guess movies often were back then.

Fun to see Steve McQueen early in his career! He's good.

British movie. Another one from Guy Ritchie and this means it's edgy and violent (but without gore) with a comedic touch to it. Not really a heist movie (even though it involves stealing both cash and a painting) but a fun watch.

And there's something special with aggressive monologues in English accent.

What about a Portuguese-Brasilian-Spanish small-time criminal robbery movie? Meh. It's not bad at all, technically. Photographically very well made. And the acting is good. You care for the characters. The comedic bits didn't really work for me though.

Sadly it doesn't really work as a heist movie either. The back of the DVD promised more of that kind, but nope, it turned into something else.

And here's an Italian-German heist movie. It's taking place in Hamburg, Germany, where at least the main characters speak English, either perfectly or with an accent.

The story leads up to a heist, one of those "one last heist" stories, at an insurance company that apparently needed a vault from the future. It's worth to watch for the heist, and the ending. The score by Ennio Morricone is very good and really does a lot for the movie. The photography is enjoyable too.

For some reason (because action has to happen) they shoved in this strange, violent and fun but pointless car chase in the middle of the movie.

I watched this as a really bad DVD transfer, with blurry picture, blown out whites and bad, muddled sound. Most, if not all, dialogue is ADR:ed as it seems, and some of it is out of sync.

92. Dayton's Devils (1968)

103 min | Crime

A crook brings together a group of ex-cons and other misfits in order to rob the payroll at an Air Force base.

Director: Jack Shea | Stars: Rory Calhoun, Leslie Nielsen, Lainie Kazan, Eric Braeden

Votes: 75

Wow. This is a strange one. Leslie Nielsen, of course, later known more for comedy than for drama, is just weird to see in this role as an vengeful, aggressive and rather psychotic leader. He's good though.

And they're robbing a military base which apparently has the month payroll in cash.

The movie has issues, that's fore sure. A bit fun as a B-movie, but not so bad it's good. It's like there's missing stuff. They steal a truck to make it look like a air force truck, but we just get to see them stealing it. The guy who gladly wacks people turns out to be just a guy who gladly wacks people; it could've been a setup for him jeopardizing the entire heist, but no. And the romance between Leda and Mike (was it?) it does not lead to anything either. And we get to listen to Leda singing an entire song at the bar. I did like it very much. But jeez, why is it there?

And then, the ending. What the heck. People get shot in the dark. I'm not even sure I saw Dayton die.

Anyway, I must admit I kind of liked this movie somehow. The idea of robbing a military base is interesting in itself.

93. Norrmalmstorg (2003 TV Movie)

90 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

This is the true story of the failed bank robbery-cum-hostage taking in a bank at the square Norrmalmstorg in Stockholm, in September 1973. The Stockholm Syndrome is named after this incident.

Director: Håkan Lindhé | Stars: Torkel Petersson, Shanti Roney, Melinda Kinnaman, Tova Magnusson

Votes: 559

World-wide this movie was released as The Stockholm syndrome, and it covers the story when that phrase was coined. It's a bank robbery and at the same time a deliberate attempt at, by taking hostages, getting a fellow criminal released from prison.

So, it's a different and interesting story.

I had high hopes for this picture. It's an SVT production, which usually means it's a good production, and the cast is great. However, I felt the story rushed at the beginning. And you really don't get to know the characters, except for Janne, played by Torkel Petersson, and the actors don't shine at all, again except perhaps for Petersson.

Scenes are intercut with b/w archive footage from the TV news from the actual event in 1973. I does not work in my point of view. It's just unnecessary and does not really add anything. It would've been better if you only get to see it while broadcasted (and I think they're using original radio broadcast material this way).

Overall, an okay movie if you're interested in heist movies and the Stockholm syndrome, but not much more.

Hacking-themed drama thriller. A bit unclear how much Tom Clancy wrote (and I haven't read Clancy at all) but I have to assume he would come up with something more believable than this if he wrote on his own. Apparently written in 1999, well, published, and the movie was released the same year. Weird.

Terribly dated ... no, not dated, just plain incorrect and silly use of the simplest technical terms, like hyperlink and optical fiber. It's like it's the work of a child's imagination. And then the digital construct of a dead person ...? Even sillier.

It's a great cast though, with Dennehy, Pounder, Berkeley etc, and they do a good job. A TV production with high production value.

An ok watch but still, silly.

This is of course the more or less classic heist movie from Guy Ritchie; he's first film, which also launched the acting career of Vinnie Jones.

Great characters. Clever plot. Brilliant photowork, editing and use of music. And those lovely British working class accents.

Is there anything to complain about? Perhaps it has aged badly, rewatching it now in 2018. It's not as crazy and fun as I remembered it.

A documentary about the well known bank robbery and hostage situation in Stockholm, Sweden, 1973, which gave birth to the term Stockholm syndrome.

This was published on DVD together with Norrmalmstorg, also on this list.

Though this documentary does not reach, in my opinion, the expected level of production quality, it does provide a good deal of insight into the entire robbery, hostage situation and police work. The robber Janne Olsson is inteviewed as well as Clark Olofsson and the hostages.

So, it was okay, but not much more. They could've done much more and made it say 90 minutes at least.
