S2: Superficial and pretty hollow, but the style, energy, and slickness keep it moving and cover all the many weaknesses
Despite the first season of Killing Eve being light entertainment fluff, its second season got a huge amount of hype and promotion. This is understandable since it was very popular and profitable, but the downside of this is that it makes it seem that the show is something more that very enjoyable fluff. The good thing is that the show itself seems not to have forgotten that, even if the hype and marketing would have you believe hat this is event television (which the "US before UK release" and "iPlayer full release on one night" certainly confirms it is not). The second season picks up immediately at the end of the first and goes from there.
In terms of the show knowing what it is, this works because it keeps its focus very much on its superficiality, it dark humour, and its cool locations, costumes, and style. All of this is very much in place whether it is the snapping of a child's neck (Channel 4's Utopia must be raging that their child murders got strong reaction, whereas here it gets an LOL from Twitter), or just pointless scenes that look great. It does this very well and the second season is entertainingly slick and glides across the main plot points whether they make sense or not. We get the sexuality, the blood, the drama, the tension, the thrills, the costumes, the snappy dialogue - all of it. What we don't get is much of consequence, which the first season at least had occasionally. This is lacking and it is a shame, because I wanted some anchor of seriousness in the middle of all this - but it never came. Regardless it still works for what it is - even though "what it is" is light entertainment fluff with a huge budget and an international presence.
The production values are high, the cast do the best with what they have available to work with (and do well with it), and generally speaking it is entertaining and enjoyable. I can't reach those who think there is some depth, character, or insight to all this, but the lack of that doesn't mean it is somehow bad television - just that it is fluff.
